I have two LG OLED "Smart" TVs and attached to them are two Apple TV streaming boxes. I do not use the baked in features of the TV and have the TV smart features disabled via the settings where able.
My understanding is that the Apple TV streaming apps (Netflix, Max, etc) seem to receive more attention from the providers than the TV apps, and I trust Apple with my use data more so than the TV companies.
We bought our first smart TV a couple of months ago; a 60” LG.
Until it popped up a notification last week about a software update, I’d completely forgotten about the smart stuff, because I only use an Apple TV with it.
I have a LG C2 and use an AppleTV. I've used Android, Roku, Google, Fire, too. I think of all of them the AppleTV user experience is the best overall. You don't need an AppleTV if you have a smart TV but I think it'll give a better, cleaner experience.
Need it? No, but I have an LG in my bedroom that I didn't grab an ATV for yet and dread every time I want to start/switch apps, It's not just the UI, the hardware is pretty crappy and makes every button click pretty stressful.
LG has great apps and experience, I have a LG smart TV, but their app store has audio playing that is so annoying and although apps like Netflix are good, many other are not so well made like the AppleTV ones, I prefer the Apple TV to use apps and also I rent movies on iTunes (not AppleTV app) it's just more pratical to use
And my LG TV is 4 years old, I don't have updates anymore of the TV system but my AppleTV is always getting updates and new features, it seems the built in TVs system gets abandoned too quickly
I started with AppleTV years and when we upgraded our TV I didn’t think I’d need another AppleTV. I was wrong.
The interface sucks. It’s laggy and underpowered by comparison. It feels like I’m using a device from 10 years ago.
The only thing I like is the TV remote. AppleTV remotes suck.

An external box is always going to give you a better experience

I have an LG OLED and use the Apple TV because the interface is so much better. They are relatively cheap and are well worth it to me.
I have the ATV on all my TVs. The built in apps on tv are slow and will only get slower. Plus you don’t have to worry about targeted advertising.
Smart TVs' UX are far off smart boxes, without a doubt.

Apple TV has been great and replaced the Google UX in our 7 year old Sony Android tv; it was slow and laggy.
I would. OS that is baked into a TV always sucks and is usually buggy.
Yes to ATV.

AppleTV is a must for every TV! Built in smart tv features are trash on all brands
What was your reason for buying that particular TV?
Huge discount :)
Do you always down vote people for asking questions or did you down vote me because I'm a girl?
Didn't you get banned from another subreddit for trying to create drama by blaming downvotes on being a girl?
Nope
