WHAT is this Mickey Mouse shit?!
WHAT in the name of Jesus H. Christ are you animals doing in MY head?!
WHY is Pvt. Pyle out of his bunk after lights out?!
WHY is Pvt. Pyle holding that weapon?!
WHY aren’t you STOMPING Pvt. Pyle’s guts out?!!!
Are there any velocity specs on the side of the top box? My only guess would be it’s not loaded to the same spec
Either that or just an older packaging design
Yes, the generic Winchester is faster.
M193 is a specific loading, and Winchester has the contract for Lake City to produce the DoD/Fed ammo at the facility, and sell off the overrun commercially.
Exactly different spec. M193 has a spec that is followed (or they are lying on the box and its not m193 rounds). Technically a m193 from winchester should be the same as any other m193 and hit the same etc.
Meanwhile the 55grain box mean only that. No spec on powder, primer etc. A 55gr from one company is not the same as 55gr as one from another.
M193 is surplus/overrun LC contract ammo. M193 is a specific loading with clear standards & parameters.
The other is not. It’s 55gr 5.56 ammo with no milspec standards (for better or worse).
Just because you buy 77 grain OTM ammo from whoever doesn’t mean it’s mk262, for instance. Even from Black Hills.
All 556 is officially “5.56x45 NATO.” It’s literally the full-name classification of the cartridge.
There are then dozens of variations under that classification.
Talk about a self own.
Blocked for regard.
This is wrong.
The 5.56 NATO designation is an umbrella classification that covers a wide range of ammunition standards.
62gr “NATO Standard” is called M855 in in the US and SS109 in other countries. But there are many other cartridges that still fall under the 5.56 NATO designation.
You should do some research before spewing stupidity all over Reddit.
_Other Types of 5.56 NATO Ammo:_
_M196 (Tracer)_
_The M196 usually has an orange or red tip, denoting that it is a tracer round. Tracer rounds burn a chemical compound (usually found in fireworks) that's glued to the back end of the bullet itself, creating a bright trail in its wake. Most magazines load a tracer every 3 to 4 rounds._
_M199 (Dummy)_
_The M199 dummy round is an insert, used for dry-fire training. Dummy rounds have six indents on the sides of the shell casing to denote that it is a dummy round with no powder inside. The primer is removed so the firing pin can pass through safely with each dry-fire._
_M200 (Blank)_
_The M200 is a functional shell casing with gunpowder loaded inside. At the business end, the casing is crimped with no bullet in place. The crimping allows appropriate pressure to build in the chamber and barrel in absence of a live round, allowing the rifle or pistol to cycle as if it were firing a live round._
_M856 (Extended Tracer)_
_Contrary to believe, the M856 does not have a steel core penetrator like the M855. The M856 is merely an extended tracer round with a 63-grain bullet._
_M862 SRTA (Short-Range Trainer)_
_The M862 short-range training ammo, or SRTA, allows for live-fire indoors where rifle ammunition would not normally be allowed. This ammo can be used to train at distances of 25 meters or less. Importantly, many AR-15 owners and military service members zero their rifles for 100 meters, at 25 meters. You should not use SRTA ammo to do this, even though the firing distance is the same. Ballistics for the M862 round are wildly different compared to M855 and M193, and doing this will result in an inaccurate zero._
I remember seeing something on SG Ammo about mil-spec rounds potentially looking tarnished, discolored, etc and it's normal and acceptable because mil-spec calls for not polishing the cases after annealing.
So I'd be interested in seeing if the 55gr 5.56 looks the same as M193 or the cases are more polished and clean.
Yes! The M193 has to follow the NATO and US Military Standard which require certain types of powders, primers and projectiles plus the chamber pressure and velocity within a tighter tolerance.
The regular 55gr 5.56 ammo uses which ever supplies are available for that caliber.
Easiest way to look at it is m193 has to follow a very strict recipe that helps you when you have scopes and red dots sighted to it you will not have to rezero with each box you open.
What are the product codes? For instance the last batch of Winchester m193 ammo I bought was in 500 rd boxes and the code said WM193500. A 1k rd box was WM1931000 and so on. When it's 55 gr but doesn't mention m193, it's usually Q3131 which is listed by Winchester as going 3250 fps out of a 20 inch barrel.
Same same. I’m gonna guess one box has just rounds in it and one box has a plastic insert to hold the rounds? 🤷🏻♂️ let me know how to pick up my 20 round ammo box prize if I’m correct.
M193 is just another name for FMJ 556. It’s exactly the same round. Just some marketing guru at Winchester trying things to see what sells better. All m193s are 55gr FMJ. They’re mil-spec “non armor penetrating” rounds.
Indoor ranges near me don't allow the m855 ammo because it has a steel tip on the projectile which damages their back stop. Never heard of m193 damaging anything it's just a lead FMJ.
It’ll put holes in or otherwise damage cheap steel targets at closer ranges with a longer barrel. Otherwise, saying it damages the backstop is nonsense
If it’s fast enough, yes, but how fast does it take to noticeably damage a backstop if that back stop has been made properly for rifle rounds? A mild steel tip inside the bullets core shouldn’t be enough to damage a backstop unless that backstop was never meant to handle rifle rounds.
M193 should have a muzzle velocity of 3250 and Winchester says the not m193 is 3270, but the m193 box in your photo says 3180 and so does their website. So who the hell knows :). But they’re probably lake city and probably tarnished.
Won't catch me putting Winchester white box in my guns. Especially since they somehow get their velocity using a 24in barrel. Winchester is notoriously shitty ammo. Chronograph that shit and youll see a few hundred FPS difference between rounds.
Is that a 20 and 30 round package?
Theoretically the M193 need to be Nato spec (58000 psi, Heat Treatment Annealined and with a sealed primer).
The 5.56 does not need to be that.
But how big are the chances that Winchester does produce to different 5.56 55gr Carts?. I would gues that is more of an oversight from Marketing, that the forgot to add the M193, 3180 FPS on the bigger cartridgte. Or maybe this is older stock, and hence does not have yet the modified packaging...
Same price?
Is the SKU (barcode) the same?
The only difference I could guess would be that the M193 meets al the requirements of the M193 round. Crimped and sealed primer, sealed case mouth, correct powder and bullet.
The other could be any bullet and powder, not sealed, and is just a 5.56, but not anything more specific.
But that's all seriously just a wild assed guess.
One is Full Metal Jacket and the other is Full Metal Jacket

Top box is bigger
Bottom box is perfectly fine! There's nothing wrong with a smaller box!
I prefer a small box. Makes my cartridge look bigger
My wife says the smaller box is fine!
"the big ones hurt my chamber babe"
I prefer the smaller box.
It was cold when it was boxed.
All joking aside smaller box preferred, stores better.
Idk id say the bottom box is about average..
Maybe even just a little bit above average.

I love me some 77 Grain OTM.
It’s good stuff
I’ve been using 75 grain super performance, I love it can get to 3000fps
Technically, anything labeled 556 NATO is abiding by *some* kind of milspec or standard… https://youtu.be/VCS4fXFmCyA?si=8tzDb0T7uI6ePXqK
Show me on the box where it says “NATO” in the OP

Not necessarily. I think I've seen some pmc that wasn't to any mil spec and it still had the throat marks from treating.
The annealing process.

Yes! The top box is slightly larger
Smaller box fits in a purse easier
More room for snacks
I’d be willing to bet the M193 has a crimped and NATO spec primer. While the other does not.
I have a bunch of Winchester 5.56 that is labeled M193 that does not have a crimped primer.
Corporate would like you to tell the difference between these two images
The lil horsey guy is aaaalmost to the finish line on the bottom box whereas he’s got a bit left to go on the top box
Is the top box older than 2020? I was under the impression that M193 was the Lake City ammo, and Winchester took LC over in October of that year.
One travels at 3180 fps and the other, I guess, doesn't.
wait til you see how butter is packaged in the midwest
What about the brown box
What are the product codes? For instance the last batch of Winchester m193 ammo I bought was in 500 rd boxes and the code said WM193500. A 1k rd box was WM1931000 and so on. The box lot design is different..probably an upper management excuse to give a raise to a buddy in marketing or some sht …you know important stuff…
One box is long and skinny, and the other is short and fat
Sometimes it’s not a below average cartridge it’s just an above average box.
Look at the headstamp, if they're both marked lake city then they're the same.
One goes 3180 fps. the other is unlimited 😏
Same same. I’m gonna guess one box has just rounds in it and one box has a plastic insert to hold the rounds? 🤷🏻♂️ let me know how to pick up my 20 round ammo box prize if I’m correct.
Could be packaging, is the top one m855?
It says 55 grain on the box, not 62 grain, so… no.
Oh right 🤣 deeerp imma get a coffee and wake up
Taking back that downvote, cause I can’t blame anyone for missing something before having their coffee.
How benevolent of you
One is NATO surplus the other isn't, civ ammo may or may not be faster.
Probably not,just branding differences
But both boxes are the same brand…
Nope both boxes are filled with 💩
The then the fact that Winchester white boxes in any caliber suck tits. Nothing
Shoot each at night. M193 probably has a flash suppressant powder. The other is gonna throw a big fire ball in comparison.
M193 is just another name for FMJ 556. It’s exactly the same round. Just some marketing guru at Winchester trying things to see what sells better. All m193s are 55gr FMJ. They’re mil-spec “non armor penetrating” rounds.
All M193 is 55gr FMJ. Not all 55gr FMJ is M193.
Don't shoot targets with 193 my dude. It's a waste
It's the same price, any reason why? I was prevented from shooting the 193 at my local range as it's supposedly damages the backstop
I mean, it could in theory, but that would mean ur backstop is so piss poor u have no business shooting rifles on that range anyway.
Thats not how that works, even pure lead will damage ar500 if its fast enough.
If it’s fast enough, yes, but how fast does it take to noticeably damage a backstop if that back stop has been made properly for rifle rounds? A mild steel tip inside the bullets core shouldn’t be enough to damage a backstop unless that backstop was never meant to handle rifle rounds.
around 3100 FPS for lead, less for steel. It doesnt matter if its mild steel in teh round or hardened steel, it will cause damage no matter what.
A lot of ranges don't allow fmj.
Wow really that's new to me. What are you supposed to shoot there soft points or something?
Yeah, I honestly think it's just a rule to force you to buy range ammo.
M193 should have a muzzle velocity of 3250 and Winchester says the not m193 is 3270, but the m193 box in your photo says 3180 and so does their website. So who the hell knows :). But they’re probably lake city and probably tarnished.
3250 is out of a 20” barrel 3180 is out of a 16” barrel
And of course no mention of barrel length from Winchester :)
Check them with a magnet.
M855 has the steel penetrator in the tip
Not enough info. Based on the pic I'd say round count.
[удалено]
Most of it is Lake city. The head stamp on Herters from bass pro has the LC on it.
There’s likely minor differences like the primer or the powder quality. But that’s gonna be about it.
One goes bang the other…goes boom
One goes bang the other…goes boom
M193 sounds cooler
Ones slightly more excited than the other.
Obviously one box is bigger than the other!
“I don’t think I’m gonna like this movie…”
Looks like only difference in 2 rounds less in one box
Won't catch me putting Winchester white box in my guns. Especially since they somehow get their velocity using a 24in barrel. Winchester is notoriously shitty ammo. Chronograph that shit and youll see a few hundred FPS difference between rounds.
Quit playin with it and shoot it!
Ones almost half off 😂😂
The larger box has 20 rounds separated by a plastic divider. Smaller box, they eliminated the waste.
Not really, little more marketing maybe
The longer box has a plastic insert that holds the ammo. The packaging design is different. Remember, Have fun!
One of the boxes is longer![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Yes there is the box is different but what's inside is the same
Is that a 20 and 30 round package? Theoretically the M193 need to be Nato spec (58000 psi, Heat Treatment Annealined and with a sealed primer). The 5.56 does not need to be that. Or maybe this is older stock, and hence does not have yet the modified packaging...
The box
I believe one is manufactured in the Lake City plant and is contract overrun, and the other is made by Winchester
Imagine just typing this question into Google really quick
Looks like the one box is smaller than the other box
Same same, but different.
Ain’t no dang Frenchie warnings on the small box!!!!
Same ammo, top box has a plastic divider between each round, the bottom one is straight packaging. Plastic takes up some space needing the larger box
Check the packaging... One might just be thicker cardboard. https://www.pewpewtactical.com/federal-m-vs-xm-556-xm193-vs-xm855/
