I feel thier wallet pain . I have spent a couple hundred on chians trying to do this on a 100 plus year old tree next to my house. Full of nails, rocks and wire. I used a metal detector and hatchet to remove as much metal as I could. I got mine down to less than half of what you got left. If the city would let me I would make a couple of holes and drop hot charcoal in them . It just smolders and slowly turns the area into ash . Other than that get some cheap axes and a grinder . start chopping.

You can use the wood in landscaping. It will eventually break down and rot but placing it under and between trees and shrubs will suppress weeds and work like mulch.

Burn the chunks whole. Bonfire in the yard. You don't need to split them.

i would put a 55 gallon drum around it, and light a fire with some scrap wood. keep the fire lit for a day or two,

Grind around the whole tree with stump grinder then with a back hoe or mini excavator rip the whole thing out .

sounds like they just didn't want to deal with the wood . there is always a way
