I wish I had a good unit in Hawaii. It was my dream location coming in as a private and first duty station after AIT. I mean fucking HAWAII! Except there was no PAO office when I got there, had to start it from scratch with no PAO officer. Never had a sergeant for over a year, my direct supervisor was an information ops Major who absolutely hated his life and ruined mine. It sucks that Hawaii is an open sore in my memory. I've been out for a decade now, but honestly if I had a normal set of supervisors and proper direction I would've retired in the army.
Yes figured that for permanent party but if folks coming there for an exercise they could definitely made better accommodations especially with all the empty lodging billets around back in 2013. I hold the commanders of 8th army responsible for the poor treatment of American soldiers sent there on TDY
Understood. I did my requiem of shitty times and places where I was enlisted and NCO and then a company grade. So when I went to Korea in 2013 and the way 8th army treated all in the excercise. Well just say I was appalled and let the brass know it. Ended my career. Well whatever I served 34 years
Have to agree was there in tent city as well for an exercise for three weeks and it was appalling how the army treated us in tent city. Of course I complained as I had served in the army at that time for 33 years and was appalled.
I went there a couple times for work and I would literally side eye the soldiers there. Lucky ass motherfuckers.
We had some interesting āvillesā outside our bases in Area 1, and Yongsan Ville was fuckin Seoul lol
Yeah, I was in BDE Legal the majority of time I was in 1-25 so I saw more suicide investigations than I care to admit. It was absolutely my worst experience my entire time in the Army. I always said that Iād chop off my left nut if I ever got orders back there.
It's just Wainwright in general.. nonstop balls-to-the-wall shitshow for three years.
Not much changed with 1-25 turning into 1-11, at least the shitty Strykers that don't work in Arctic conditions are gone.
Iām not surprised, and to think the Army thought changing the name and giving everyone a new patch would solve all of the morale problems. Fuck no, Wainwright is just a miserable place. From the area, to the units, and to the leadership. Iāve been curious though, does everyone just use HMMWVs or JLTVs now that the Strykers are gone? Or are they trying to make it a real airborne brigade?
JLTVs, HMMWV, FMTV
Fielding new SUSV soon, CATV.
Wainwright is more of an Air Assault IBCT now. Airborne would raise morale too much.
My Reddit name reflects my time there: worst duty station in 20+ years of service.
Aviano AFB, one itās an Airforce base. Two youāre a detachment out of Vicenza. Three itās northern Italy with the eastern europe and Bavaria a short trip away. Fastest four years of my life.
š Did my hitch at the Caserma back in the 80s. Any free time found us hopping a train to see another European city. Really cool duty station in N. Italy.
This. As somebody who lives in southern New Jersey I can tell you the convenience is unmatched.
40 min - Atlantic City.
1.5 hr - New York City
45 min - Delaware
35 min - Philly
1.5-2 hr Baltimore/DC
MY Next duty station is Meade for this exact reason. Not a fan of NSA sites tbh but especially as a 35N but you canāt beat that convenience and proximity to home.
Nah from Meade itās a good 2.5-3 hours depending on traffic. If you drive north to the Delaware memorial bridge, cross into Jersey and then continue north through Trenton you might catch some unwanted work traffic.
But considering the distance youāre covering thatās actually really good. The NJ turnpike usually doesnāt have bad traffic until you get close to high volume times.
The 1.5 hr time I mentioned is strictly for me since I currently live in New Jersey (and Iām a 35N)
I was the Post Chaplain and served the 11th Trans Bn there from 83-86. I also covered the other units there--Navy EOD, Army School of Music, USMC unit, etc. I loved the area. I'm thinking of moving back to the Tidewater area for retirement. 4 seasons, none of them severe. Nearby Ft Eustis is also great.
I was light infantry so humping 100lbs around the backyard sucked but man being right there in Monterey down the street from palo alto, Santa Cruz and San Fran was just awesome.
Beautiful place! Lived in Seaside until my junior year. We moved when the base closed and my dad got a job at Lemoore Naval Air Station. Joined up after HS and closest I got was Ft. Carson.
Edit: Iāll always remember the 7ID sign over the gate. Home of the Lightfighter
Sierra Vista rarely sees temps over 90. Itās at over a mile high in elevation. My place uses swamp cooling and doesnāt need AC. What are you on about??
JBLM was a great time for me. I miss it. Tried to extend and stay there, but it was not in the cards. I miss running around Seattle or Olympia on the weekends.
Fort Huachuca.
I have a small family. Its got alot of nature, no strip clubs right off Post, a decent family town, wine country is 30 mins away, clean air, etc
Ft. Riley, as weird as that sounds.
The base is pretty nice, with a lot of quality gyms for soldiers and convenient mini-shoppettes. The hill is a beautiful place to run in the morning, and rent off-base is pretty cheap. The training area is great, and I had a really good unit.
When you're off work, there's plenty of outdoorsy activities to do (boating, fishing, hunting, etc.). If you're looking for something less outdoorsy, there's a ton of stuff to do in Manhattan, KS. Plus, if you're single the dating scene is good, with K-State being located in Manhattan, just 15-20 minutes off post.
I'd go back in a heartbeat.
Fort Riley is the worst base I have ever been. It is hot as Iraq during summer and cold as Drum during winter. There is absolutely nothing to do if you are not into hunting. Fishing is pretty pathetic. On-post housing is nightmare and off-post housing is rip-off. Not to mention sketchy Junction City.
Manhattan is a tiny college town. They have a small depressing mall and couple strips of bar and that's it. If you wanna experience some culture, you gotta go to Kansas City, which is 2 hours away.
Stay away from this place. No one picks as #1 for this location, so you can guess the quality of officers and NCOs.
Thank God that I'm outta there now. I love my new base. I'd rather go to Fort Johnson than Riley.
Campbell, being a socal girl and first duty station I drank all the kool aid and I lived all the seasons. At JBLM now and can wait to go back to Campbell and retire
Campbell is not too bad if it wasnāt for yearly JRTCs and 2 DTDs taking up nearly 3 months of the year. Throw on regular fields and youāve got a near 50/50 split of sleeping at home vs in the field.
I'm not a huge fan of Clarksville, but when soldiers complain about Campbell itself, it blows my mind. The PX? Everything you could want. The roads and traffic? Totally reasonable, easily navigated. The commissary? World class. The Soldier Support Center? Literally the best I've ever seen.
Some of the barracks did look rough, though. I won't lie.
This was what we saw at Riley also. Between Junction City, Manhattan, and Fort Riley there seemed to always be some kind of family friendly event happening.
Single Soldiers, thought, it's pretty much Aggieville until they get tires of fighting K State frat bros.
I know. It was going up while I was leaving. I was really hoping to get responsibly hammered with the boys at the PX parking lot Texas Roadhouse, but the timeline wasn't right.
Campbell has been my personal favorite for location
Campbell's surrounding area doesn't have the scummy "military town" feel to it. Clarksville is booming, the bourbon trail is at your back door, Land Between The Lakes is an hour or less, Nashville is an hour, and the most important thing to me was it's homey there with plenty of space. I will definitely find my way back to retire near there. Dover is where I'd like to end up.
Are you me lol. From SoCal, chic, first duty station was Ft Campbell, second was Jblm lol
I am surprised you donāt like Washington. I loved it. But I definitely went back to Campbell as my last duty station. Loveddddd it the second time around. Got out there and moved back to WA tho lol
Itās to expensive and I think Iām a country girl at heart hahaha. I love seeing all four seasons and the summers. Are you me? I was chemical, from SoCal and first duty station Campbell hahaha
Super chill culture, no organized PT, in Miami and not some dumpy Army town, it's joint. I got on the color guard team and got to do all kinds of cool stuff. And it's the highest level, so the work was always serious. I worked on all kinds of things that went directly to the Secretary of Defense or other cabinet positions, I briefed the vice president, drafted a memo for the President's signature etc. I hope you get it
Currently enlisted reserves as a whiskey. Iām finishing school and then doing med school looking for the DC on graduation and then will go active. Itās on the bucket list
Irwin. As permanent party your days off are MEGA protected. You get multiple 4 days a month because of the rotations. Everything is about rotations there, there wasnt as much fuckery with random ass division mandated bullshit. Everything was super predictable. A lot of 'big boy rules'
Also the scenery just did it for me, idk, it was really pretty to me. 2 hours from Vegas or LA. Not too far from Cali mountains.
Should mention I was there as a single CPT. So if you have a family or are junior enlisted, your experience will differ drastically.
What battalion were you in? When I was there we had gunnery during the salmon run, BN/BDE FTX during caribou season, and NTC during the winter when I could be skiing.
You lucked out. Iāve said this before somewhere else, but I literally lost count of the number of suicides we had in the BDE. It was so bad, one of my Team Leaders asked me āsir, why do all of my friends end up trying to kill themselves?ā
I will never not forgive the senior leaders in 1-25 for how poorly run everything was and their tendency to make lieutenants do just about everything.
At the time when I was there, 1-25 had a lot of issues. I had a lot of friends in the various Infantry battalions and theyād tell me all the time about suicides, etc. Wainwright isnāt an easy place by any means and I hope itās ran better nowadays. Even in Aviation, the LTs never seemed to stop working.
Irwin, located in beautiful California. Just a short drive to the coast, beach and surf. Also a close drive to Las Vegas.
Getting a 3 day pass was super easy and command really cares for the morale of their Joes. As long as you arenāt on some detail like CQ, command will authorized your pass guaranteed.
I highly recommend it as a first duty station. You get to learn and become an expert in desert warfare, armored tactics, convoy operation, and counter insurgent strategy. So when you go to your next duty station, everyone respects you off the bat.
Also, when you re-enlist, Hawaii is guaranteed to be your next duty station! Itās Awesome!
Insane!!! What other bases have you been stationed at brother!!! Sorry man, I hated my life being stationed at Ft. Irwin. By far the worst as far as Iām
concerned.
Camp Zama, was TDY in Japan for a couple months and got to go to Zama often. Small base but the MWR was decked out with a building for soldiers with gaming consoles and other things to do. The bars were actually really good with drinks and food. Best base Iāve been on
Bamberg, Germany. Close enough to everything that you can walk to most of it, or use the excellent public transit to get to what is too far to walk. Weirdly some of the best Chinese food Iāve had to this day was just off post. Burned more money than I care to admit at the pub, but had some of the best times of my life.
Shame it closed down.
10/10 town though, Iād still go visit.
West Point:
Scenery that rivals Europe. Most live on base so walking/jogging/biking to work was fun and easy, save for the occasional black bear encounter.
Tons of spectating opportunities at Division 1 sporting events. I was pleasantly surprised with the tailgating for WP football.
NYC is an hour south. Plenty of other opportunities as well. Montreal was about five hours north.
There are some challenges being stationed fairly rural too, but it was definitely a great experience and worth it.
I am surprised no one has mentioned Ft. Belvoir on this thread.
For context, in addition to WP, I have been stationed at:
\- Hood/Cavazos
\- K Town
\- Ft. Eustis
\- Redstone Arsenal, AL
\- Eglin AFB
\- Offutt AFB
\- Ft Lee/Gregg-Adams
\- NCR
\- JBLM
Shafter by far for me. I havenāt been stationed at drum though. I worked long hours at Shafter, but I did my own organized PT, and went TDY so often to a lot of unique locations.
Also was able to work right next to some generals and get LoRs so that i could advance my career. I loved my time there.
Outside of work youāre literally in a vacation destination. Itās one of the best locations Iāve been to, and I canāt wait to go back, even if itās schofield.
I did 24 years ad retiring in 93. My favorite assignment was 1/10 FA Schweinfurt.
My favorite base was West Point. Had its own ski hill. I really enjoyed that as well as trips to New York.
Bases I was stationed:
Lewis x 3 (basic, Madigan, 9th ID)
Ft. Sam x3 ,
Bragg ,
West Point ,
Pleiku ,
Devens,
Aberdeen PG,
Leonardwood ,
Campbell ,
Schweinfurt ,
Bliss (WBAMC and White Sands),
Hood First Cav,
Ft Knox,
Lots of places in 24 years.
Permanent party at Fort Moore (Benning). Plenty of support services, property is cheap, the city isnāt *too expensive and the Peopleās Republic of Alabama is right across the river.
Was just thinking while reading through this list that nobody would ever say Fort Hood, but, I was wrong. However, you are wrong for liking that miserable dirt pit where dreams die and souls are crushed š.
Only thing Fort Hood had was a decent central location, everything else there was bad bad bad.
Location: JBLM (love the scenery of the PNW) My personal best experience: Hawaii (good unit/friends)
I wish I had a good unit in Hawaii. It was my dream location coming in as a private and first duty station after AIT. I mean fucking HAWAII! Except there was no PAO office when I got there, had to start it from scratch with no PAO officer. It was the IO Officer š¤£sorry your paradise experience got ruined.
Yongsan for location.
I went TDY to Yongsan for UFG. Base was cool, tent city sucked. I paid for a night in the Dragon Hill to get away from porta potty life.
I thankfully was permanent party as it was shutting down, so no tent city for me
Yes figured that for permanent party but if folks coming there for an exercise they could definitely made better accommodations especially with all the empty lodging billets around back in 2013. I hold the commanders of 8th army responsible for the poor treatment of American soldiers sent there on TDY
I was a lowly 1LT, so I wasnāt put up in the Dragon Hill like the field grades.
I had been in for 3.5 and still thought it sucked.
Of course it did 8th treated soldiers in the exercises in a brutal and appalling fashion
Butā¦ Stuttgart. Either way, Yongsan-Stuttgart were the best years of my career.
I went there a couple times for work and I would literally side eye the soldiers there. Lucky ass motherfuckers. We had some interesting āvillesā outside our bases in Area 1, and Yongsan Ville was fuckin Seoul lol
Ft. Carson, the unit wasnāt great but damn was it better than being in 1-25 in Fairbanks.
We had so many suicides one of my team leaders asked āsir, why do so many of my friends try to kill themselves?ā ETA: When I was in 1-25
Yeah, I was in BDE Legal the majority of time I was in 1-25 so I saw more suicide investigations than I care to admit. It was absolutely my worst experience my entire time in the Army. I always said that Iād chop off my left nut if I ever got orders back there.
Bro if you were our paralegal Iām so sorry. 5-1 CAV is such a shit hole.
MSH!
I was just at Wainwright two weeks ago. That place is brutal.
Congratulations on surviving that hellhole especially in the middle of winter.
It's just Wainwright in general.. nonstop balls-to-the-wall shitshow for three years. Not much changed with 1-25 turning into 1-11, at least the shitty Strykers that don't work in Arctic conditions are gone.

Walter Reed/Ft Belvoir. Amazing weight lifting gym off base, close to DC and NYC for four days.
DMV Iron?
Yes, I like the one in crystal city vs the one closet to Ft Belvoir
Iām going to Belvoir for ILE. Iām excited.
Graf and DLI Both for location, one for the music scene, the other for the beer and travel, neither for the units.
Still amazes me how TRADOC can make a place suck. I couldnāt wait to leave the unit behind but I still miss Monterey to this day.
Fort Meade, Maryland. You got Baltimore, DC, Philly, NYC all within a short drive away. Plus the job satisfaction was unmatched.
This. As somebody who lives in southern New Jersey I can tell you the convenience is unmatched. 40 min - Atlantic City. 1.5 hr - New York City 45 min - Delaware 35 min - Philly 1.5-2 hr Baltimore/DC MY Next duty station is Meade for this exact reason. Fort Detrick in Frederick was dreamy
And Annapolis. Loved it there.
I miss Annapolis so much. The Iron Rooster was my spot 5ish years ago
Unfortunately, it's open to 2 MOS's š
Facts. As a 35F my ass was lucky.
Came here to say this. I loved my time at Meade.
Did you guys do PT outside ?
I worked random hours, plus my unit had big boi rules so i did PT on my own.
Ft Story, Virginia Beach, home of LOTS/Logistics Over The Shore. Wonderful place.
I think most people have never heard of this one or it would be higher. Itās a great spot and the units are stupid easy.
If this is the one that used to be joint base Langley/Eustis, itās a hidden gem.
Zama
It's the most beautiful installation I've ever been to. The golf course in Spring is like nothing I've ever seen.
Just commented the same
Redstone Arsenal..FYI I was in the NG
Huntsville is awesome.
Roll Tide
Jber
I second JBER. Only thing I don't miss is the mosquitos.
Fort Leavenworth because there was plenty to do in Kansas City and some really good eats locally.
Funny when I was at Fort Leavenworth they didn't even let me leave my cell.
You serious? That backwoods hick shithole was a fucking horrible duty station.
Ft. ORD
I was born there. Always brings a smile when I see Fort Ord mentioned.
Fort Huachuca. Nice, peaceful and quiet out there.
Youāre the 3rd person to say Huachuca. Come out to Goodfellow and join your SIGINT brethren.
You left out āhot.ā
Sierra Vista rarely sees temps over 90. Itās at over a mile high in elevation. My place uses swamp cooling and doesnāt need AC. What are you on about??
I went there in July it was toasty.
I'm in Phoenix so it wasn't bad compared to the 115
Go for a hike up in the mountains. Temps drop dramatically very quickly.
Ok. Beautiful area.
During the Summer, it is hot during the day but nice at night. In the winter, Nice during the day and somewhat bitterly cold at night.
JBLM was a great time for me. I miss it. Tried to extend and stay there, but it was not in the cards. I miss running around Seattle or Olympia on the weekends.
Glad to see the best kept secret in the army is still a secret.
Found the basement dweller. ( BAMC?)
Shhhhhhš¤«
HAAF.
Damn fucking right. Once they fix that damn roundabout.
K16 in Korea. Right outside Seoul. Just a battalion so no annoying brigade and above nonsense to deal with
Camp Zama Japan. Right next to Tokyo
I was on Okinawa so I know yall mfers up in Brigade donāt do shit!!!
Fort Huachuca. I have a small family. Its got alot of nature, no strip clubs right off Post, a decent family town, wine country is 30 mins away, clean air, etc

Same we have been looking at buying land in Dover
Dover and Cadiz would be my top two picks if I were to live out that way for sure.
It used to in the 80ās. It was the epitome of it.
Oof, Clarksville. Dover isnāt a terrible area though. Itās quiet out that way.

Living that Miami life.
CSMās basement.. next reenlistment is indef, maybe I can get SMAās basement?
Wiesbaden
Yeah - anywhere in Europe tops any base in CONUS if you arenāt afraid to get off base and see Europe.
Wiesbaden has the perk of also being in a German State Capital so like the town itself is actually nice! Big fan
Wiesbaden also felt like ten people worked there. Iād slit a MFās throat for a Frikadelle from the German Cantina.
JBSA!
Here now and the convenience to downtown is pretty clutch.
Presidio of Monterey
Huachuca had some beautiful sunsets
Graf.
Tripler AMC.
Conus; fort Carson bc we can escape into the mountain west on the weekends. Conus; k town.
Doner box at K-town on the way to Paris was šš½
You said conus twice.
For outdoor recreation, JBER is pretty much the king of the castle.
Them grizzlies tho...

I enjoyed Irwin for 3 years, all in Ops Group. Iād go back for the right job. That said, it wasnāt my favorite post. Top 5 though.
Yongsan when it was open, now camp H.

Weirdly some of the best Chinese food Iāve had to this day was just off post. Burned more money than I care to admit at the pub, but had some of the best times of my life. Shame it closed down. 10/10 town though, Iād still go visit.
Schofield Barracks
Schofield. We were always busy but the location was unmatched paradise.
Fort Leavenworth.
Camp Williams Utah. Base is super small but clean. And it's surrounded by an outdoorsman's paradise
Isnāt that an NG base? I went there for FTXs as an ROTC cadet.
Kyogamisaki Communications Site, Kyoto, Japan. Best 13 months ever.
West Point: Scenery that rivals Europe. For context, in addition to WP, I have been stationed at: \- Hood/Cavazos \- K Town \- Ft. Eustis \- Redstone Arsenal, AL \- Eglin AFB \- Offutt AFB \- Ft Lee/Gregg-Adams \- NCR \- JBLM
Landstuhl.
Mannheim Germany.
JBSA.
Drum, Shafter. Outdoor activities all year round.
Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Arlington, Virginia (best kept secret).
Best base so far is JBLM. Best placed station: Boston (recruiting - disliked the job but location was amazing.)
I really enjoyed everything about FT Carson. Camp Carroll South Korea is boring but Korea is fun.
Leonardwood or McCoy just love the scenery. Also Iāve only been to one other base
JBER
Illeshiem Army Airfield in beautiful Bavaria, Germany. Only major downside to the place is your biggest shop on base is the shopette.
USAG-I. Vicenza (Ederle, Del Din) was so much fun. I loved being out there.
I did 24 years ad retiring in 93. My favorite assignment was 1/10 FA Schweinfurt. My favorite base was West Point. Had its own ski hill. I really enjoyed that as well as trips to New York. Bases I was stationed: Lewis x 3 (basic, Madigan, 9th ID) Ft. Sam x3 , Bragg , West Point , Pleiku , Devens, Aberdeen PG, Leonardwood , Campbell , Schweinfurt , Bliss (WBAMC and White Sands), Hood First Cav, Ft Knox, Lots of places in 24 years.
That fresh, clean Aberdeen water! I loved Maryland.
Ft. Sam all the way....
Bragg. I mean, who doesnāt love Spring Lake!!
My list - Fort Drum, Fort Sam Houston, Fort Carson
Yongsan and Heidelberg
JBLM. Outside of the army, it was fantastic. I didnāt want to leave when I ETSād.
CENTCOM at MacDill was meh but I really love the area, view and environment.
Fort Polk š„
Fort couch
Permanent party at Fort Moore (Benning). Plenty of support services, property is cheap, the city isnāt *too expensive and the Peopleās Republic of Alabama is right across the river.
I judge bases on their distance away from Alabama, not their proximity to it.

Liking Hood/Bliss is a sign of severe and potentially unrepairable trauma, please speak to a professional
Getting divorced twice really doesnāt sound appealing
Depends on the caliber of ex wife, I would imagine.
2 divorces in 8 years damn dude
Was just thinking while reading through this list that nobody would ever say Fort Hood, but, I was wrong. However, you are wrong for liking that miserable dirt pit where dreams die and souls are crushed š. Only thing Fort Hood had was a decent central location, everything else there was bad bad bad.
Some people see 2 divorces in 8 years and think wow what an unlucky sob. I see two in eight and think wow, sheās got the *rizz*
Fort Leonard Wood
Ahhh yes Club Rodeo
Especially the engineer side of the base. God I miss that land nav course.
Fort Riley is awesome. Fort Bliss is by far the worst place I've been too though.
My couch (national guard here)
Camp Buehring
Green Beans was life. Idc what anyone says. Iām pathologically incapable of believing it wasnāt the best coffee ever.
Camp Casey, Fort Bragg, and Camp Atterbury have all been excellent lol
Ft Bragg, NC.
Ft Louis !!!
1 Bliss 2 schofield 3 drum
Fort Bliss
