Laurel rekindle her relationship with Oliver in s4 would only make sense if Oliver really had grown up and started respecting her, which didn't really happen. At that point there is just too much nails in the coffin:
- Tommy dying to save Laurel while she loving Oliver. I think this was the reason why Oliver pulled away in s2, he couldn't bare the guilt.
- Oliver choosing Sara again. Obviously showing that Sara wasn't just a fling for him, and at that point this makes Sara dating Oliver equally, so Oliver in a way became Laurel sisters boyfriend more than Laurels and I remember that a lot of people were against Sara and Oliver being end game because Oliver was Laurel's boyfriend, so the same logic applies to Laurel after he dated Sara very seriously.
- Laurel not being seen as equal fighter and team member by Oliver, understandably. Green Arrow and Black Canary are equals, this is what makes them special. Laurel being a new Black Canary while Oliver had defeated Ra's just makes her more of a sidekick rather than the real partner, and this is just not the real deal.
and then the baby mam drama, which even though he did it to Felicity, he would have done it to Laurel too and honestly I do not see how if she has a little self respect would have relationship with someone with so much baggage and even be mother figure to his kid, he had with another woman while being with her.

Episode 17 and 18 of season 4 actually showcase how well they could have worked, had they gotten back together, which they probably would have, had she not died.
And Laurel was such a big part of why he survived those 5 years of hell. And she was the one he dreamed of being married to, in the 100th episode.
Imagine if Marc Guggenheim and Wendy Mericle were not so hardcore pressed on Olicity, and if they didn't hate Laurel's character or Katie Cassidy.
I think the only reason Laurel became a more likable character compared to the earlier seasons is because there was no longer a big focus on drama revolving around her. If they had rekindled the relationship between the two of them, I guarantee her character would have been hated again and once again, too full of drama.

I feel like the writers really did Laurel dirty season two and it honestly kind of ruined her. They started to give her a chance again but shortly after axed her. Then they bring in Black Siren to spit on her grave. Im only up to season 6 so we’ll see how that goes.
Well the character of Laurel had run its course, so I can see why they wanted to kill her off, but the way they did it was just terrible. At least with Black Siren they still keep a version of Laurel (and actress Kate Cassidy) on the show. And this character gives the writers more flexibility to explore new directions.
Oliver and Laurel were only ever hinted at being a future love interest in S1. Even by S2 it was pretty clear that was never going to happen. By S4 that ship had long since sailed. He could've ended up with Sara had they not killed her off, but with her out of the picture, I can't think of anyone else better than Felicity. They just should've toned down a bit of the melodrama in S4, and done less of the "Will they/Won't they?" drama that went on for too long before finally marrying.
