Truffle butter. It reeked so much of petrol that I couldn't get it down. Thought it was rotten, but then I read that the gassy smell is what makes it special.

Truffle oils, butters and such are notoriously not real truffle, but a synthetic chemical, that vaguely resembles it.
The real truffle is great, but needs to be used sparsely, I get sick of the aroma very quickly.
It’s like a funky garlic. Too much garlic is nasty but the right amount is fkn delicious
(I’m a garlic freak though so you’d need A LOT to scare me away, truffles on the other hand are waay funkier)
Truffles taste like expensive dirt. I've worked in fine dining and shaved truffles on things and added caviar to stuff. In the end, fancy food is usually not something my palate enjoys.
Alaskan snow crab blows lobster out of the water. It’s sweet, soft and amazing. Lobster (even perfectly cooked) it’s tough, rubbery and honestly a bit bland. In my opinion lobster is just a vehicle for copious amounts of butter.
That's not much that I think is an objectively appealing food, but this is the exception: if people don't like chocolate, I literally think there's something wrong with them.
Fresh caught dungeness crab is the tits. I live in Oregon, and I go crabbing multiple times a year. It's like $20 for a shellfish license, it usually pays for itself after one trip, so it's a no-brainer, and it's a great excuse to just chill on a pier with your friends drinking beer.
Since it's the end of the season the prices are far more reasonable now, but yes, this season was very sad indeed. As a Louisiana native, after today my family will have only had it 3x this year, which is considerably less than previous years. I think we're sitting at 20lbs so far, not counting what we'll eat tonight.
For me it's not food but beer. Everyone around me drinks beer and enjoys it and I wanted that too. I tried all kinds of beer throughout time but every single one was bitter and not sweet enough. Eventually I gave up so now I drink muscat.
For me its alcohol in general, it tastes like shit be it wine, hard liquor, or beer. People on tv will drink it likes it is water but i cringe a little every gulp
YES! I recently turned 21 and my friends took me to their favorite bar to buy me drinks. I felt horrible because I didn’t finish any of them. I hate the taste of alcohol, and I always get sick & throw up after more than 3 drinks. They always get mad that I won’t drink with them because of it. I’m more a weed person myself anyways 🤷♀️
I'm almost 32 and every beer or wine tastes the same. A metallic taste. It's like sucking on a piece of lead or chewing aluminum foil. I can tell when a cheese sauce or dish has had alcohol in it because it's repulsive to me.
I'm interested if it's going to turn out that there's some genetic component to having beer taste like metal. It does to me too and I've always said it tastes like "a skunk peed in a tin can". I do like a very dry red wine though.
I hated beer for so long, anytime I’d take a sip I’d make a disgusting face, but I went to the casino and wanted a drink ( a sweet wine cooler bc that’s the only thing I can tolerate ) but I couldn’t find any of those, so I got an angry orchard which I heard is more like wine than beer but it definitely taste a little like beer but I LOVE IT. It’s like a cider taste and I got used to it
Circus peanuts. The candy. When I was a kid, in the grocery store with my mom, I would smell the bags of circus peanuts and they smelled so good. I never had enough money to buy them, (they only came in big bags back then) but I knew they would be my favorite if I ever tasted them. Fast forward 30 years, and I told my sister they were my favorite so she bought me some for my birthday... They are awful....
Possibly the worst candy in existence, second maybe only to Woppers. I used to always think Snowballs (the pink hostess treat that’s a clump of marshmallow) would be awesome and they too are terrible
Sushi is a fun one for me because people will try to claim you just haven’t had good or authentic sushi. Sir, i have LIVED in Japan, sushi just doesn’t do it for me.
I’m scared to share this, but mine is boba. No shade to those who love it, but I’ve tried multiple times and it just doesn’t work for me. Too sweet, too slimy. Can’t do it.
My husband’s 96 year old grandpa tried boba last year. He enjoyed the drink but I’m in the kitchen and I hear him yell in Spanish “why are there balls in my mouth?” The entire household burst into laughter. He loves milk tea now but said no more balls in his drinks. 😂
I agree. I had it once and the taste of it was underwhelming and the actual boba balls messed with my stomach and gave me a massive headache. I’m open to giving it another try, but man the first time didn’t give a good first impression
for me its certain seafoods like oysters, sea cucumbers, or mussels. I can't stand the weird aftertaste that just seems to make me wanna gag every time. and I get weird looks when people find out I can't stomach these seafoods. i do fine eating fish and prawn but anything gooey/chewy-ish it just makes me wanna vomit.
I thought the same until I had good falafel. It’s not supposed to be dry but for some reason it’s very common to find a dry falafel. A good moist falafel is so good.

You're absolutely right - fresh falafel, made by someone who knows what they're doing, is amazing. I've never had bad falafel from a Middle Eastern restaurant. But premade supermarket falafel? Frozen falafel? The god-awful houmous and falafel wraps that are still the only vegan options at some places? Grim.
Have you ever had it with Tahini sauce, it's divine with that. I'm Middle eastern and most falafels I've had were are somewhat dry unless you add something with it.
It's weird because I always thought I hated falafel until I had some really good falafel and now I even like it if its mediocre, which you think would be the opposite and the good falafel would make the not so good even worse.
I like falafel. What I object to is it being every bloody veggie option at the moment. Or sandwiches with falafels and hummus and a crunchy chickpeas for texture. Thats all the same thing! It’s bland and boring!
Menudo. I go to these Mexican “hole in the wall” places for breakfast in my town in Texas. I see the old men with their menudo, coffee and Spanish newspapers every morning. It seemed like a good idea. I tried it and my throat closed up and I couldn’t swallow it. I spit it back in the bowl, dry heaved at the table and had to leave. No doubt the old men got a chuckle at the gringo. I like the idea of Menudo, but in reality it’s a bowl full of pig feet and intestines and that’s what it tastes like.
If you throat closed up then you are allergic
to some ingredient. Be thankful it wasn’t severe or you won’t be able to breath and may have had to get a shot. Get an allergy test or find what ingredients were in it and figure out what are you allergic to. No point going into anaphylaxis shock
I remember my family and i were trying oysters straight from the sea. They seemed to be fine with it but i can’t so gooey textures. I ended up taking it with a bunch and i mean a bunch of hot sauce to mask the taste and texture.
Tons of different types (cabbage, potato, radish, etc) and flavors/spices for kimchi. And kimchi is a “family recipe” type food for Koreans; everyone has their own twist. Like most foods, just because you didn’t like the one(s) you have tried doesn’t mean there isn’t one out there for you. That said, I totally understand being grossed out by something to such an extent that you swear them all off.
Mochi ice cream. I was excited to try it but the outside was just too.. stretchy and squishy. The texture was abhorrent. Which is too bad because it tastes quite good.
I had a very sick dog and tripe was the ONLY thing he would eat. He weighed 105 pounds so 3 times a day I was warming up 5 cans of tripe with beef broth into a slurry.... IT WAS SO GROSS!!!
I am a very adventurous eater, and I love a lot of less-conventional meats, but tripe has always been hard for me. I’ll eat it, but avoid it if I have the option.
I love most sushi....for me it's cottage cheese. I want to like it but every time I try it I can't stand it.
Also fresh blueberries. Idk why. Maybe the texture? I love love love blueberries cooked or dried like in baked goods or trail mixes or jams but I cannot enjoy them raw for some reason.

We were on a flight once where the lunch was a quinoa salad. The flight attendants brought the meals out from the galley and returned almost all of them untouched.
Not food, but coffee. Can't stand the taste and the aftertaste stays for too long for how disgusting it is. I thought I'd learn to drink it after I got older, I have also worked a year in a lunchroom creating all kinds of coffee for people. But no, I find it disgusting.
My mom grew up with goats and it was her job to milk them. She said the milk and anything that is made from it tastes like where they smelled and she can't stand it.

A fresh made corn dog is always the best. There's a restaurant here in LA that does shrimp corn dogs. They are so delicious! You've got to do mustard with (all) corndogs. Idk why but it brings out the magic.

For me it's anything spicy. The dish would smell so good (usually because of the spice) and everyone would encourage me to try some, but every single time I did I could only feel pain. I never understand how so many people love spiciness so much
I agree. I get pretty pissed at restaurants that overly spice their food. I want to taste my fucking entree. I'm there to eat and enjoy the taste of my food, not have my mouth burning so bad I can't even taste anything.
I don't think so. I love fish. I think it's the rice somehow? Even though I love rice. I love everything in it, I don't understand why it tastes bad for me. Maybe they put something in the rice that I don't like?

They add rice vinegar to sushi rice. Traditionally, they’d also add a dollop of wasabi under the fish/on top of the rice, but it’s rare they do this now (especially if you’re outside of Japan/Asia).
Of course they put something in the rice. It's flavored with rice vinegar, sugar and often kombu (a type of kelp). Sushi means vinegar rice.
Apparently rice with vinegar was used to store and ferment fish in back in the day and at some point they figured out, maybe because they were hungry and couldn't wait, that fresh fish with the sour rice was pretty good and later refined it by using slightly more sweet vinegar mix.
Imported Lychee and grape drinks from Japan or a different place. They looked nice but smelt and tasted like bleach and other industrial chemicals. They had chewy bits in them too which made it even worse to drink
Mochi. I've tried various types, and being a japanophile, I desperately want to like it. It's becoming so ubiquitous in the west now too.
But srsly: how can anyone eat that stuff? The texture...its just like putting a huge ball of bubblegum in your mouth. It makes me gag.

Anything truffle. I don't mind earthy flavors but I just can't with truffle. Also wine. I will occasionally have a glass but I don't make it a lifestyle like a lot of people seem to. I can open a bottle and it will sit for months and eventually get poured down the drain.
Pig’s ears. All the old men were ordering them as the tapa. They tasted like crunchy pig-flavour undercooked pasta.
Worse still was brown rice sushi from Whole Foods. I threw up into a bin almost immediately. The texture is foul.

You shouldn’t be able to taste the alcohol if they follow the recipe correctly. Usually the heat will take out the unpleasant notes

The marshmallows in lucky charms are made from the same stuff. They’re small circus peanuts in different shapes and colors.

You have to get it in Dearborn Michigan. I’ve since moved from there and any other falafel I’ve had is dry, powdery, and yech.

Yeah, that. Except it was vanilla, sort of. And gummy and ice cream just don't work for me.
Corn dogs. I didn't know that the breading was sweet. I was very disappointed. I've always been reluctant to mix sweet and salty foods though.
Basic corn dogs are too sweet unless dipped in mustard in my opinion. But the pancake/spicy sausage version is amazing.
You can make a cornmeal beef batter version without sugar. Pretty amazing
Tripe....it was well prepared but ghastly nevertheless...
I had a very sick dog and tripe was the ONLY thing he would eat. He weighed 105 pounds so 3 times a day I was warming up 5 cans of tripe with beef broth into a slurry.... IT WAS SO GROSS!!!

I am a very adventurous eater, and I love a lot of less-conventional meats, but tripe has always been hard for me. I’ll eat it, but avoid it if I have the option.

I love most sushi....for me it's cottage cheese. I want to like it but every time I try it I can't stand it. Also fresh blueberries. Idk why. Maybe the texture? I love love love blueberries cooked or dried like in baked goods or trail mixes or jams but I cannot enjoy them raw for some reason.

We were on a flight once where the lunch was a quinoa salad. The flight attendants brought the meals out from the galley and returned almost all of them untouched.

Not food, but coffee. Can't stand the taste and the aftertaste stays for too long for how disgusting it is. I thought I'd learn to drink it after I got older, I have also worked a year in a lunchroom creating all kinds of coffee for people. But no, I find it disgusting.

My mom grew up with goats and it was her job to milk them. She said the milk and anything that is made from it tastes like where they smelled and she can't stand it. Grandma also traumatised her promising it wasn't goatsmilk Custard for it to be goatsmilk Custard every single time.
Boba or Bubble tea with tapioca pearls. The tea was delicious, but those pearls messed up my stomach and tasted meh.

A fresh made corn dog is always the best. There's a restaurant here in LA that does shrimp corn dogs. They are so delicious! You've got to do mustard with (all) corndogs. Idk why but it brings out the magic.

For me it's anything spicy. The dish would smell so good (usually because of the spice) and everyone would encourage me to try some, but every single time I did I could only feel pain. I never understand how so many people love spiciness so much
I agree. I get pretty pissed at restaurants that overly spice their food. I want to taste my fucking entree. I'm there to eat and enjoy the taste of my food, not have my mouth burning so bad I can't even taste anything.

I don't think so. I love fish. I think it's the rice somehow? Even though I love rice. I love everything in it, I don't understand why it tastes bad for me. Maybe they put something in the rice that I don't like?
Is it the seaweed? I know some people who only hate it because of the seaweed and have enjoyed the non-seaweed varieties.

So what about sashimi then? They add rice vinegar to sushi rice. Traditionally, they’d also add a dollop of wasabi under the fish/on top of the rice, but it’s rare they do this now (especially if you’re outside of Japan/Asia).
Of course they put something in the rice. It's flavored with rice vinegar, sugar and often kombu (a type of kelp). Sushi means vinegar rice. Apparently rice with vinegar was used to store and ferment fish in back in the day and at some point they figured out, maybe because they were hungry and couldn't wait, that fresh fish with the sour rice was pretty good and later refined it by using slightly more sweet vinegar mix.
Imported Lychee and grape drinks from Japan or a different place. They looked nice but smelt and tasted like bleach and other industrial chemicals. They had chewy bits in them too which made it even worse to drink

Mochi. I've tried various types, and being a japanophile, I desperately want to like it. It's becoming so ubiquitous in the west now too. But srsly: how can anyone eat that stuff? The texture...its just like putting a huge ball of bubblegum in your mouth. It makes me gag. Sorry, Japan.

Anything truffle. I don't mind earthy flavors but I just can't with truffle. Also wine. I will occasionally have a glass but I don't make it a lifestyle like a lot of people seem to. I can open a bottle and it will sit for months and eventually get poured down the drain.
Pig’s ears. All the old men were ordering them as the tapa. They tasted like crunchy pig-flavour undercooked pasta. Worse still was brown rice sushi from Whole Foods. I threw up into a bin almost immediately. The texture is foul.

You kinda have to grow up with them. They're the gold star lunchbox desserts for kids to trade. But beyond that, it's a guilty pleasure for most of us. They're a junk food snack, like chips that you eat when you want to indulge in crap.

I'm with you on sushi. I love fish and eat it several times a week. I love poke bowls. That is my go to do something nice for yourself meal. Sushi looks so visually appealing and fresh and refreshing, but I just don't like it. I've tried all kinds of different sushi and I just don't enjoy it.

Pizza with anchovies
Fish! Have tried it every way possible and if it’s not deep fried and in a fish taco, I can’t eat it. Ironically fishing is my passion. Been fishing for over fifty years ( I’m fuckin old!) and I just C&R ordered give them to family. Really wish I could like fish

Scallops, too sulphery. Walnuts, too earthy. Umm... jellied wasabi octopus, it's like spicy snot. I'll still eat scallops and walnuts if I have to, but the third one is where I draw the line.
Same with the sushi! I can eat small tiny bites, but then I get the ick. I calsi can't stand the nori- seaweed is disgusting
