There's lots of Asians in Beaverton/Hillsboro because of Intel and other engineering jobs in Beaverton/Hillsboro

\>People were nice to us without being intrusive Portland (or Seattle) Freeze: People are friendly, but no one wants to be your friend. What about other relocation considerations? Where would you be working? How long of a commute can you tolerate? Would you be driving or taking public transportation? Can you afford rent/mortgage and current cost of living in the city, including child care, if needed? What's your overall budget?

Will be working in health care. Can afford median housing price/though we plan to rent for the first year, healthcare. Other options: stay where we are which is rural AZ where the dry landscape is getting to us (we always like greenery) but moved here because pay was great. Now that we have a 1 year old we need to be in a place where there are more things to do and younger families with kids. Bay Area/Southern California is another option. Wife and I are both in highly technical healthcare fields and is difficult to get a job at the same time in the same location. My job will be in Beaverton, here would be in the Hill. Can tolerate a 20 minute commute.

\>Beaverton, 20 minute commute. That will absolutely limit you to Beaverton or the immediate surrounding area, which isn't a bad thing, it's a highly recommended suburb for young families, and has a much greater level of diversity, especially in Asian populations, than the rest of the metro area. However, if you're split in work locations, where you live will be highly dependent on how much time you want to commute. Do not underestimate the level traffic here. Working at OHSU has it's own particular commuting and parking challenges, which you can search the sub for.

I see! We didn’t like the homes in the Beaverton area (everything looked cookie cutter). We were thinking of Portland heights/west slop as the elementary school was highly rated. Wife will be working near the OHSU campus. Google maps says commute to and from the above areas to Beaverton work place is 15-20 is that an underestimation? Budget : rent: 3000-4500

Entirely depends on where in Beaverton and what time of day. Look at a topography map, and then know that many of the largest employers are located in Beaverton and Hillsboro, which makes 26 a bottlenecked mess from 8-9am and from 3-6pm.

If you are living in West Slope, or really anywhere, do a little more research on your commute. OHSU on Marquam Hill navigation can send people on residential streets with a lot of safety problems. Drive them visually using StreetView before assuming they are good commute routes. Check your commute times by setting the clock on maps to rush hour.

redfan11

Thanks this is very helpful. I didn’t know about streetwise until you mentioned it.

We live in Far East portland almost in Gresham, my husband commutes to Beaverton and it’s only 20 mins on reg 35-45 min on average with traffic. It is all dependent on when you leave. Have you looked in Oswego for homes/rentals?

redfan11

We did. Depending on where in LO commute is around 20-30 mins which is the limit of what I consider acceptable (for perspective my current commute in 7 mins right now)

Check out Milwaukie. A bit cheaper and a lot more family friendly. I was pleasantly surprised to see all the Asians at the Clackamas Costco. Tons of authentic E and SE Asian food offerings along 82nd. Google "Jade District".

We were advised to stay the other side of the bridge since our work is in the bill and Beaverton. I understand those bridges can be gridlocked during rush hour?

Portland has many families which can trace ancestors to SE Asia. Many Vietnamese have settled here and you will find families from all the countries in that region. I would look at schools if you have or plan a family. I would start with the high school, test scores, AP, programs, then work back to the elementary school. Test scores are public, ignore realtor sites. We are gentrifying, so things can change. Like other cities, we are having a gun problem. We have a terrible vehicle theft problem. For commonly stolen vehicles, certain years of Subaru, Honda, Toyota, Korean cars, vans, and pickups, install an ignition cutout. We also have a bad problem, like SF, with theft from vehicle. You will be welcome here. There are many moving threads to search for just about every question.
