Im gonna champion Maelys here. If his punch could kill a destrier I feel like it really comes down to skill. I think either could basically kill the other fairly easily, it's just about who gets a good hit in first and where that hit Lands / what weapon
Gregor.
Along the same line, OP do you think younger Ser Barristan in his prime could take The Mountain?
Any of y’all are welcome to answer that too, I’m genuinely curious. I think no.
I would say yes, peak Barristan is basically the best swords man to exist in Westeros, he would tire the mountain out and slay him, but all it takes is one fuck up the whole fight for Barristan to be screwed and using a sword he wouldn’t be able to keep his distance like Oberyn so I would only give him a 75% chance of winning.
Barristan would win in single combat against Gregor.
Oberyn showed us how. Bronn seemed pretty confident he could beat him but understood one mistake could cost him his life. Jaime felt he could beat him at full strength.
Oberyn showed us with a spear and a dirty trick, neither of which Ser Barristan would use. Also Oberyn didn’t exactly win. He lost sooner and there was no clear winner in that match.
imagine being 8 feet tall 400lb of muscle and no one in the kingdom call you the best.
hes not that good and gets away with it from just power.
if the mountain had any skill he would be the best fighter in history and no one could touch him
but hes more just like a smarter hodor
Oberyn absolutely would have won if not for trying to elicit a confession.
Word of God says Barristan was equal to Arthur Dayne in terms of skill. And he is proficient with all sorts of weapons. He’s an accomplished tournament fighter and beat Mero with a stick.
It’s not brought up a lot, but Barristan is taller than Jorah, though not as muscular.
arthur dayne and selmy are equal, arthur wins because of dawn and is the greatest fighter ever, so selmy 2nd best ever he beats mountain easy
>Who would win in a fight, Barristan Selmy or Arthur Dayne (in their best days)?
> Dayne... if he was armed with Dawn.
> If both men had equivalent weaponry, it might be a toss-up.
I think yes. Barristan is possibly the greatest swordsaint in the entire series, and all with an ordinary sword, none of this "magic sword forged from a fallen meteor" or Valyrian steel nonsense. Maelys probably would have been out-berserked by Gregor Clegane, but I can totally see you g barristan basically win using oberyns tactics of evasion, racking up cuts at joints, and overall superior technique + finesse winning out
Honestly, I think even old Barristan could defeat The Mountain, but it would be a much closer call. Barristan is lighter, more skilled with the sword, and can fight smartly. He would deflect all the mountain's attacks, wait for him to get tired, and then move in for the kill.
I think a lot of people could beat Gregor. You just have to focus more on strategy then pure combat, and most people don't have the knowledge of strategy to do that.
Barristan selmy is 65 years old and still one of the finest knights in the realm. A prime barristan would handle Gregor relatively easily. Gregor is skilled but it’s his size that’s giving him most of his advantage. He’s not god tier in terms of skill. He’s got a decent level of skill for his size. Add in his size and you’ve got a very dangerous soldier. If skill levels are relatively similar then size will win out but a significant size advantage can be overcome by a significant skill advantage.
In that respect barristan wins. Probably about 8 or 9 times out of 10
Doesn’t Maelys have two heads where as Gregor might have fewer than one? Maelys could think twice as fast as Gregor, using his superior intellect to make twice as many moves twice as quickly and react twice as swiftly to Gregor’s counters.
Barristan
I approve of this message

Gregor is on milk of the poppy and Maelys is intelligent enough to command an invasion of the Stepstones and organize the band of nine.

Gregor. The only unique thing Maelys had going for him was his strength, and Gregor is stronger.
