I have been looking for some kind of evidence of this. I have suspected from the beginning that if a sound wave is created to cancel out another audible noise then the decibel level is still going to cause damage and you won’t even notice. It was just a theory though and I’ve yet to find any corroborating research or studies.
If they're cancelling out that would mean they're destructively interfering, which means their amplitudes are subtracted from one another - so, zero. Basically it shouldn't cause damage to your hearing if you can't hear it. Idk if there's some other reason noise-cancelling is bad, but it wouldn't be some sort of inaudible sound.
In an ideal scenario, yes. But in reality there are always sound fragments (audible or not) depending on the headphones and the cancelled noise. Just like no headphones can reproduce the sound to be EXACTLY like the original they also can’t reproduce anti sound in real time to be exactly the same. Real noise is much more complex than sin waves and is rarely cancelled completely. Though as damage to the ear is related to amplitude rather than frequency it’s highly unlikely it would cause major damage to the human ear, but even inaudible low/high frequency sound remnants might cause discomfort if your ear is sensitive and/or the exposure is longterm.
I can only speak from my own experience with the Bose QC35 over-ear and the beyerdynamic free Byrd in-ear where the first cancels a lot and has a remnant sound pressure that becomes uncomfortable after a while where the latter cancels less but I can wear them until they get physically uncomfortable rather than auditive.
I didn’t mean it in that way. I meant if you still listen to your music on blast like I do, you’re still doing damage to your ears and even more now since you’re canceling outside noise, so the music is that much more louder.
So my comment was more about volume level in relation to noise canceling.
In a perfect scenario i would not need the controlled noise if there weren‘t the terrible and no good random bad sounds. There are so many. Bad frequency coil whine, neighbors screaming, laughing, rummaging, banging, car doors, sneakers squeeking, the cats licking themselves - it‘s a long list. Music, Headphones, TV help.
yeah i like backround noise but NOT people chewing at all, it makes me want to punch them and if they're doing it right next to me then i have to keep my arm pinned down to keep it from catapulting into their face, however that nice backround noise, i've been sleeping on the floor next to my computer because 1 i sleep like a rock on the floor 2 i love the hum from my pc fr
same except i have a cat and my brain is disabled when i feel like a B O Y so i can't really feel how cute a cat eating is but i can a little bit and i agree
Not me. Any dog noise is too much for me, too. I have three, unfortunately, and have to leave the room whenever they are doing anything other than sleeping or laying there. I spend a lot of time in my noise canceling earbuds.
My dog makes adorable yum yum noises when she is eating. It would be disgusting if a human did it.
Also, snoring. Cute when it’s the dog, anger-inducing when it’s the juman.
This is also my answer. My TV with background noise? Good. My mas TV with high volume? Bad. Music while cleaning? Great. Music while talking? Horrible.
It’s funny, I used to be the “there has to be no background noise or I go insane” ND and then I got tinnitus which made the no background noise make me insane cuz the tinnitus is too loud. Now background noise is a comfort cuz it drowns out the tinnitus lol
Same. I smoke to dull my over-sensitive sense of smell & taste and used to do dumb stuff to damage my hearing (like neglecting ear-protection when using firearms/explosives at work) in the hope it would dull that sense too, kind of like how smoking worked for me… little did I know; that’s not how hearing works.
Now silence to me is like the D-day beach scene from saving private Ryan. Sounds like there’s a big old CRT TV on at all times in my head… I’m a dumbass.
Oh my god i never tied my very sensitive sense of smell (usually to stank...) or hearing to my asp/autism...
I can be deaf AF when occupied but ill hear the dog breathing downstairs when trying to sleep. Dont care im walking through a field of shit but open a can of dogfood and ill retch
And when you get bored you can easily summon an earworm.

I'm listening to music when I work, when I'm driving, when I'm doing yard work, when I'm in the shower and when I sleep. And I don't like repeating my music too much.
I find my brain goes into rumination if it gets quiet, I like to keep something going to distract it. Sometimes I'll sing or whistle if I can't have music. Also I hate my goddamn sports fan neighbors, I can hear them going wooo from inside their house, inside my house.
Same, I even got accommodations to listen to music in class. I am currently listening to my library alphabetically by artist. It's been 4 months and I just got to S.
I have 22,000 songs, I do a star rating for each song. I listen to unrated songs on shuffle. I've been rating new songs for 2 years and I still have 3000 to go. /r/musichoarder

Does "both depending on the circumstances" count? I can't stand the TV randomly on, but I also can't stand the fan not running while I'm working or trying to sleep.
I believe it does. It is a rare day when i deliberately choose complete silence. I generally have red noise or rain sounds on low around the clock, and pair that with instrumental music at night. Beyond that, it depends on the brain space required for the task at hand. Sometimes “the zone” demands vocal background noise, like investigatory podcasts. But other times, like when I’m reading and writing, I opt for silence.
A repetitive but arrhythmic noise, however, will bring me to my knees.
I'd say you're the latter then... fan noise is similar to white noise which masks all other frequencies. It technically is noise, but there's no discernible auditory information in it, so sensory wise id consider it closer to silence
Both? Uncontrolled background noises - especially things like yardwork and machinery make me want to literally murder someone just to make it stop. But if I'm working, reading, or even playing a game, I generally have to have something. It can't be voiced if what I'm doing otherwise involves words or I can't concentrate on them. But chill instrumental music, storm sounds, etc all make great deliberate background.
I'm the must have total silence to focus *or* very intentionally sound, like a podcast or audio audiobook that requires active listening. Anything in between is a nightmare.
Exactly! And if there's music playing in the background in a restaurant or shopping mall, that's the only thing I listen to. Can't focus on the conversations or anything else.
litterally got charged at becuse some asshole was offended i dared walk out of my apartment after being woken up at 2:00 in the morning because the same jackass decided to start blaring his music so loud I can feel the rhythm of his base in my bones.
So to answer your question depends if someone high drunk fuck wanting to die at 2:00 am by charging at a man 3 times his size. Hes lucking a warned his ass.
I need a fan to sleep to keep the background noise steady.
There is always background noise no matter what. Traffic, electricity, bugs, breathing, wind, even in complete silence I start hearing my heart beat and blood pumping.
Well, my physician actually prescribed noise canceling headphones, it's sad that some Uber driver named Genesis who drives a blue Honda Civic with Texas license plate PYM6470 decided to steal them though.
I need it if I'm calm and focusing on one thing or there's nothing going on, but the second there's multiple things to keep track of or the rest of my environment is getting hectic i need silence
i need background noise but only a certain kind + volume. yes i know it's really particular of me but my brain works in funny ways. the wrong noise will keep me awake at night
Background music whenever I'm out of the house. Otherwise, a show or YouTube video. I'd like having no background noise but It's just not possible so I like having some I can control
If I hear myself breathe I might kill someone, so definitely the former. Gotta agree that the wrong kind of background noise is maddening too though, neighbors blasting bassy music or someone gathering up plastic bags down the hall is also a recipe for inevitable homicide.
I'm starting to think people with omnipresent misophonia aren't "meant" to survive, like if I were born to a tribe of cavemen would I just be the dumbass that goes insane and runs off to fistfight a tiger because they can't regulate their emotional response to anything? This feels like being born with one of those terminal baby illnesses but somehow living for decades anyway just because technology has kinda sorta made it possible but at a fairly low quality of life.
Depends on how my day has been and where my emotions and sensitivity are.
Sometimes I can even hear the blue light of my sleep-mode monitor going on and off and I can’t sleep until I shut it off completely.
Other times I’m not even aware I left my fan on
i draw, write, and sleep so much better with the TV on it's not even funny
i'll put on a 4-hour youtube video i don't even care about just to fall asleep to it
If there is no noise i rethink about my whole life; masking, getting forced to lying, exams etc.
But if there is any kind of noise, then i can hopefully shut my brain a little with little suffering.
Mostly background noise drives me mad. I've got a wireless charger, I can't use it at night because it has a little fan in that drives me up the wall. When it's hot I can just about deal with an actual fan because I'm very temperature sensitive though.
Sometimes I need noise, but I need to control it.
Depends. I'm okay with white noise. Music is sometimes okay but it depends on the music on the context. Other than that I absolutely hate background noise
podcast only.. literally need talking or my brain will do the talking and i don’t need that at all! best if it’s normal tone talking like daily conversation.. ghost science or like economics is nice
Background noise good if i am in control. Like a gaming video and music at game time good cause I'm in control. News and music, bad. Cause I'm not in control.
It fluctuates from needing background noise to needing to not have background noise depending on so many variables. Quite depends if sound is part of the application. Falling asleep can be a chore once in a while lol
I hate noise. The fan is not noise. The fan is the glorious giver of moving air that regulates the temperature to proper sleep levels. It sings the song of its people and I sleep.
The later. Part of my nightly routine is turning off power strips and unplugging certain things. Some power bricks are so noisy, my TV sound bar power brick is the most egregious offender but once unplugged and the capacitors drain it's nice and quiet. I can't wait to get old and lose my hearing enough to not hear it anymore 😭
I must have background noise that i can control type of neurodivergent
Same. Noise cancelling headphones have made my quality of life so much better
And worse can damage to ears.

It's called misophonia. I have it, and I hate it. It's usually worse when there's overstimulation / when I'm more stressed.
This is also my answer. My TV with background noise? Good. My mas TV with high volume? Bad. Music while cleaning? Great. Music while talking? Horrible.
Yepppp. I wouldn't survive working in a noisy office if I wasn't allowed to have my headphones on and my music playing.
I have buildt in background noise, it's called tinnitus.
This is why I gotta sleep with a fan on. I cannot sleep with tinnitus 🥲

it's really fun when you're both
I'm both and i cannot choose when i become which one
Fan at night, tv/radio at day, otherwise i hear my friggin pulse in my ears? ugh
I can feel my pulse in my feet, like if you line your ankles up
"Are you 'I must have background noise at all times' neurodivergent, or are you 'background noise drives me literally insane' neurodivergent?" Yes
"Once you go cray, you will never stray!"
i prefer NO backgrnd noise srry
I desire only the sound of the blood rushing through my ears
Background noise at all times to drown out the “e e e e e e e e e e e”

where is this place where there is no background noise? You don't have a refrigerator? cars passing by? anything that makes noise?
That's not consistent, I like background noise as long as it doesn't stop and start constantly. That's why I have the fan on all the time.
I mean in nature theres no noise. But that’s usually a bad thing.
You maybe don't have a hundred rooks nesting within a short distance of your house?
i dont think ive ever in my life gone outside into nature without there being significant background noise pretty much at all times
It depends, if I’m having a conversation absolutely not, anything else I neeeeeed it
Usually the former. If I’m trying to sleep through I demand absolute silence
I prefer that too (but it does make sleeping on a train / plane / boat more difficult).
litterally got charged at becuse some asshole was offended i dared walk out of my apartment after being woken up at 2:00 in the morning because the same jackass decided to start blaring his music so loud I can feel the rhythm of his base in my bones. Yes
I prefer foreground, like directly in my ears.
I need a fan to sleep to keep the background noise steady. There is always background noise no matter what. Traffic, electricity, bugs, breathing, wind, even in complete silence I start hearing my heart beat and blood pumping.
Both unfortunately…
I'm a "I must listen to a theme music for my current thought train" neurodivergent
If everything's completely silent, part of me instantly assumes I must be dead
Well, my physician actually prescribed noise canceling headphones, it's sad that some Uber driver named Genesis who drives a blue Honda Civic with Texas license plate PYM6470 decided to steal them though.
I only like the white noise machine when going to bed. As soon as I wake up I have to turn it off or I will go insane
Background noise if I need time to pass, otherwise everything has to shut up.
I’m the “Muzak I can control brings me peace whereas your Muzak sucks” type
I purposefully don’t feed some of my crickets to my gecko because I like the chirping noise throughout the day
Bro, I need background noise when I'm actively trying to watch/listen to something else. The silence of 1 source is DEAFENING.
Both
I prefer dead silence but if there’s any chance of random noises, especially voices, then I need brown noise to shut it out.
Both. I like to have background noise, but if I can't choose said noise, or stop/avoid it whenever I like, then it starts to drive me nuts.
Somehow I’m both

I have built in background noise called tinitus lol.
Both. It's pure horror
I need background noise. My bedroom sounds like a runway
Why not both! Also it really just depends on the type of noise in the background for me some is overwhelming while others are calming
Noise makes me blink and the day is gone but I'm productive. No Noise makes me cherish the day but have little energy for the day
My fiancé always has to pack my Honeywell fan when we travel or else I won’t sleep at night.

Both, it depends on how I feel at the moment
Background music whenever I'm out of the house. Otherwise, a show or YouTube video. I'd like having no background noise but It's just not possible so I like having some I can control
I prefer to have white noise on at all times. Background noise does not drive me insane but it does distract me to a debilitating degree.
If I hear myself breathe I might kill someone, so definitely the former. Gotta agree that the wrong kind of background noise is maddening too though, neighbors blasting bassy music or someone gathering up plastic bags down the hall is also a recipe for inevitable homicide. It depends. Music is on whenever possible, but if I’m doing something that requires intense concentration like programming have to stop it.
Depends on how my day has been and where my emotions and sensitivity are. Sometimes I can even hear the blue light of my sleep-mode monitor going on and off and I can’t sleep until I shut it off completely. Other times I’m not even aware I left my fan on
Mmm having a 3 second video of a dude and his cat on loop for 10 hours my beloved
I have a playlist on youtube of stream highlights and letsplays i use just to sleep every night, lol. I still watch them for fun all the time too.
It rotates on the hour
It depends on the day. Or the hour.
I literally can’t sleep without earplugs
If my white noise machine isn’t on at all times I go insane
Anyone else like me and are both of these? Like sometimes i NEED the background noise, but other times background noise is literal hell

Either a sleep mediation on YouTube, or a movie I know really well
I can't sleep without the fan on. Similar to white noise. Ironically, it drowns out all of the other background noises that are bothering me.

I am both. Sometimes simultaneously. It's fun.

Both tbh
This is entirely dependent on the situation
I could probably count the number of times I've fallen asleep without YouTube playing in the last decade on one hand
If I’m trying to use my whole brain on something I can’t have any noise at all. The other 99.9% of the time I need noise in the background.
Depends on time of day
depends on the context, i'm both lol
I’m the I need background noise and at the same time it might drive me insane type.
At all times or I go absolutely batshit insane
If I don’t have background noise I will die
yes
Depends on the minute of the day. It’s never the same. Which sucks because I have tinnitus.
it depends on the noise
Both :))))
Both…
I can't be comfortable doing chores or hobbies without music on the background
I must be able to control the background noise, and if I have to focus the background noise should not have voice

Anything to avoid that barely noticeable high pitched ringing noise.
Depends. I'm okay with white noise. Music is sometimes okay but it depends on the music on the context. Other than that I absolutely hate background noise

Yes
Nope, need absolute silence. Which is really difficult with my Tinnitus but what can you do lol.
Both :)
Depends on the day, stress level and/or mood.
Depends on the time of day; if head is empty or BUMPIN never know
Second. Definetly
Depends on if I’m in control of the background noise and what it is.
first one if I don't have the constant whirring hum of a fan on at night, I'm way more grumpy lol
Yes.
Both 😭
Literally keep my fan on even in the winter time

i have a massive fan in my room for the purpose of white noise. i cannot live without it
Depends what background noise.
How about both? It depends. If it's people talking I'm gonna go insane but if it's just music or a yt it's fine.
Does music count as background noise or regular noise?
I’m kind of both?? I *need* white noise to study but if there’s a lot of noise from people talking or cars and stuff like that it drives me crazy
Music: good. Noise: bad. I think, that about sums it up.
Background noise drives me insane.
Depends. I'm both at different times.
Background noise, I am the polar opposite of misophonia
Yes
Depends on the day! Some days, I need the background sound at all times and others I literally can't because it's too much.
It fluctuates from needing background noise to needing to not have background noise depending on so many variables. Quite depends if sound is part of the application. Falling asleep can be a chore once in a while lol
I need silence. The Hum keeps me up at night
Somehow both
I hate noise. The fan is not noise. The fan is the glorious giver of moving air that regulates the temperature to proper sleep levels. It sings the song of its people and I sleep.
Both
Both :I
Yes.
Any sound drives me mad, especially if I cannot control it. Sounds made by other people are the worst somehow.
Depends, I can be either one
