Oof I swear I felt the graininess on my tongue as I read this. I used to think I hated tomatoes for the same reason. Turns out I just went a long time without having a good one.
they're not crunchy in the same way apples are, but they don't squidge when you bite into them (hope that wasnt too uncomfortable / inaccurate of a descriptor)
edit: smaller tomatoes will squidge no matter what; you want to get a big tomato if you want to try them
Fresh ripe tomatoes are kind of firm, my grandma grows them. The skin of the tomato is crisp, and after that, the inside has maybe the firmness of a nice peach? The seeds part is still the same but slightly less squishy, not by much. A good tomato is just firmer.
as a MASSIVE fan of tomatoes, i personally find that most of the tomatoes you'll find in a stack at the grocery store or at a restaurant are pretty terrible. they taste very bland/watery. the skin is waxy, the flesh is squidgy, and the center is woody. THE WORST. if you're interested in trying more tomatoes i HIGHLY recommend looking at a local farmer's market or growing your own if either of those is an option for you. otherwise you can check with a place like sprouts or whole foods but you're very likely to be looking at packaged tomatoes from any chain grocery store. my favorites are Twilights from the brand Naturesweet or Costco usually carries a variety tub called "Wonders of the World." if you can open the container, like if there's a resealable sticker or little plastic snaps, definitely open it up and check before you buy it. i usually do a visual check for mold like with any other packaged produce, but i'm also checking the texture of the fruit! you can't GUARANTEE that none of them will be surprise weird or yucky (depressing fact) but generally if they're completely firm and smooth to the touch they're likely to be pretty good, worst case scenario they're slightly underripe. if they have a little give they could still be perfectly good but it is a little riskier so maybe don't take that risk until you're sure you even like them. if they are at all soft or wrinkly, with or without touching them, i would not buy them because i guarantee at least one of them is going to be a squishy nasty demon diaper and i wouldn't wish that on anyone. sometimes the stack of tomatoes is a little older or something and literally none of the containers are remotely trustworthy, don't waste your money, just walk away and try again later
i judge them a lot like grapes actually, even if it's full size tomato
Try roma. They're smaller and firmer. I don't like the big type of tomatoes they're always too soft and ripe and mushy. Roma are also a good small size for slicing off thin pieces to just eat, without using a whole big tomato.
Look for heirloom tomatoes if you can find them. They should be firm, not soft. Some are weird colors like yellow, green or black. They are definitely WAY better than the usual stuff they try to pass off as tomatoes.
I second Pink Ladies as a good, crisp apple choice. Far less common, but I've also had an EverCrisp apple that lived up to its name. Almost like biting into wood.
Honestly same, I personally only eat apples if I cut them up. I can't stand biting into apples for some reason, feels so weird to me (plus I have somewhat of an overbite so I can't really do it properly anyway.)
Same reason I only eat bananas when they're slightly green. Slighty green = harder chomps, fresh fruit
Yellow bananas with black freckles = grainy smooshy nasty.
Wet stringy seaweed gives me the "I must puke NOW" feeling took me too long to figure out which sushi gave me that feeling. Sheet seaweed is not a problem for me.
I actually find yellow with black freckles right on the razor's edge of acceptable. any more than freckles is an oversweet mush, but any green and the texture is great but the flavor is off. can't do bruises or discolored parts tho. those little strands drive me crazy too.
I feel that. Most fruits are Heavily Forbidden because of the stupid texture. Apples, bananas, pears, sometimes oranges, most berries, and pretty much almost all fruit except for very specific blueberries and kiwis are an absolute NO.
I'm literally allergic to a bunch of fruit - it's horrible.
I can't eat Bananas unless it's cooked in a cake or something, same with Apples.
But I can't Bite into any fruit raw - apples, peaches, oranges, etc - I just Can't do it.
Highly allergic to Avocado - which sucks because I love Mexican/Spanish/Mediterranean foods - so no Guaq etc lol. I mean, I can have a Tiny taste then comes the swollen lips and tongue >.>
I Love peaches - from a Can.
I’ve never met another person allergic to apples before! Same with me, I can eat them baked into something but not raw. It also sometimes happens with oranges, but sometimes not. It’s gotten better as I’ve been eating just like small nibbles of an apple slice at a time.
What happens to you? Does your mouth get itchy, like you can feel your teeth itch and all the way down your throat? I also sometimes get hives inside my mouth.
Sorry, I’ve just never met someone else like this lolol. People always think I’m crazy.
Yup, exactly the same effect on me.
My lips, gums, throat, tongue all itch and swell slightly. I have also previously gotten Ulcers from eating uncooked apple.
THIS is why I can't eat apples, oh my gods. I hate it because I like the way they taste. But the grimy sound it makes and the texture...makes me shiver just thinking about it.
This is why I used to have such a hard time trusting red apples. I don't particularly like green apples, they are too sour, but they're reliable for the right crunch. I also apparently eat apples weird because I use my teeth to snap off a chunk of apple, and then eat the chunk I snapped off.
There's a type of apple that I occasionally find, though I don't know the actual name of it, it has the nickname of grapples, because they taste kinda like grapes. They're the perfect apples in my opinion, just the right amount of softness that you don't struggle with taking the bite, but a symphony of crunching when you bit down on the piece, plus they're huge apples, so you're getting a lot of apple out of one fruit.
I've tried to eat them the "right way," and it feels so wrong. Apparently I'm supposed to basically scrape my teeth along the flesh as I bite, but that's so bad im my opinion, it feels like I'm juicing it in the worst way possible
I dont really have a "squishy or crunchy" prefference, i just want it to .. make sense, like, an Apple is suposed to be crunchy, so if its not, i won't eat it, but say a pear is supposed to be kinda squishy, so if its crunchy, its gross
Basically, i just don't want my food to lie to me
It's *the worst!* I hate soft apples with a passion. I want mine with a thick skin and juicy hard inside. Thick skin because I like peeling them and that makes it easier.
The combination isn't easy to find though. :(
The FACE I made. My whole upper body curled into a hunched-up, t-Rex-arms position with a facial expression that should not be seen on a human person lol
Solid apple: Gonna eat this thing down to the damn core
Soft apple: *tosses it in disgust after the first bite while drinking some water to wash it away*
LOL I love some of the words people are using to describe some of those sensory things that we don't have great words for!
Also, this is me with watermelon. I can do early season watermelons but once most people consider them sweet they're completely inedible for me. Apples are just hard for me to eat because I have tmj and they hurt my gums.
Any fruits but mainly peach, watermelon, apple and pear. I literally throw them away. People think I’m crazy or snobby or have a bad temper but I do not like soggy fruits!!!
It actually mortifies me how much I feel this particular post. I’m new to this.
Like, that *pouf* I can distinctly FEEL in my head. It’s the worst, most disappointing sound/feeling ever. Especially when I’m excited that I bought apples.
Oof I swear I felt the graininess on my tongue as I read this. I used to think I hated tomatoes for the same reason. Turns out I just went a long time without having a good one.
Same lmao
Wait are some tomatoes crunchy????
they're not crunchy in the same way apples are, but they don't squidge when you bite into them (hope that wasnt too uncomfortable / inaccurate of a descriptor) edit: smaller tomatoes will squidge no matter what; you want to get a big tomato if you want to try them
TIL I have never eaten a good tomato in my life.
Fresh ripe tomatoes are kind of firm, my grandma grows them. The skin of the tomato is crisp, and after that, the inside has maybe the firmness of a nice peach? The seeds part is still the same but slightly less squishy, not by much. A good tomato is just firmer.
That's good, I'm now on the hunt for a good tomato, as all the ones I've had have been mushy flesh and slimy seeds. Thank you btw!
as a MASSIVE fan of tomatoes, i personally find that most of the tomatoes you'll find in a stack at the grocery store or at a restaurant are pretty terrible. they taste very bland/watery. the skin is waxy, the flesh is squidgy, and the center is woody. A fresh tomato that isn't over ripe would be firm like the romas, maybe slightly firmer but still tomato texture
Np!
Look for heirloom tomatoes if you can find them. They should be firm, not soft. Some are weird colors like yellow, green or black. They are definitely WAY better than the usual stuff they try to pass off as tomatoes.
Aaaaand I’m adding “squidge” to my vocabulary thankyouverymuch!
Or else some really small ones (cherry or grape tomatoes), they don't crunch so much as pop. Like a grape, or a pomegranate seed. And it's lovely.
^ this. i love the small ones but /shrug might be different for some people
I hate the squidge and also the seeds make it worse
Same!!! Tomatoes were disgusting till I realized I only like firm ones
That's kinda why I don't like pears, unless they are unripe, I like them still green, what freaks people out.
I hate pears because they’re like soggy apples, the texture is just horrifying.
They are, the taste is ok, but I can't get pass the texture. When they're unripe they are less sweet, but at least they are firm.
#I LOVE FIRM PEARS even though it hurts my gums
You're gonna love mandarin pears. They're basically extra crispy apples even when they're ripe, but they taste like pear!!!
Oh. My. God.
WUT. Mandarin Pears?! oh hell yeah def gonna look those up
My bad. They're technically called Chinese golden pears. We just call them mandarin pears in my house.
ok :) have you tried golden kiwis btw? very tasty
Can't do kiwis. Fuzzy skin is ick
Try dragonfruit. Similar inside texture, with fuzzy outside texture.
For me its the weird grittiness that happens every time I eat one.
Yes it is the grit!
I have this issue with peaches. They're both stringy and gritty. Ugh
Me too i hate them with a passion
I like pear but I hate eating them lol
Huh, aren't you supposed to eat them green? They're nice an crispy
What color are pears SUPPOSED to be when you eat them?
Well, I suppose it varies from the species, but the most common one in my country is yellow when ripe.
Oh OK. When they are too yellow they are mushy and bad. Do people actually like it that way?

honeycrisp is SANITY all others are POOPOO
Pink Lady is like a seasonal honey crisp cousin that I find acceptable as well
I second Pink Ladies as a good, crisp apple choice. Far less common, but I've also had an EverCrisp apple that lived up to its name. Almost like biting into wood.
Biting into wood feeling is not something I thought I’d want from a fruit. But that’s such a good description
Piñata apples are good too.
Wait how do y’all feel about Fuji apples?
Honorable mention.
"Any port in a storm" for me.
Have you tried lemonade apples? It's a hybrid of honeycrisp and braeburn iirc. Tasty, firm, and has a hint of lemon.
i haven't but ... i want to O.O
Oh my fucking god I thought this was just me
Try Envy apples if you get the chance. They're like what honeycrisp is trying to be.
Jazz
this right here is why i cut my apples
Honestly same, I personally only eat apples if I cut them up. I can't stand biting into apples for some reason, feels so weird to me (plus I have somewhat of an overbite so I can't really do it properly anyway.)
6ths or 8ths?
Eighths because it's easier to quarter them perfectly, plus more surface area for peanut butter dip.
I like this answer.
Same reason I only eat bananas when they're slightly green. Slighty green = harder chomps, fresh fruit Yellow bananas with black freckles = grainy smooshy nasty.
Yes, my mom is always saying that the softned part of the banana is the most sweet, but I don't care if it is sweet, it feels disgusting.
Even thinking about it triggered me somehow but idk why.
>Yellow bananas with black freckles = grainy smooshy nasty. It's like eating a bruised person.
Wet stringy seaweed gives me the "I must puke NOW" feeling took me too long to figure out which sushi gave me that feeling. Sheet seaweed is not a problem for me.
I can't eat bananas at all because of those weird strings on the peel. They flop onto your hands and the mere thought of eating one is so gross
Open the banana like a monkey (i.e. bottom first). Then the strings go the other way and stay attached to the peel, at least for the most part.
This is a good tip. Plus then I can throw away the butthole end right away
This, but there's one at each end, so it's kinda moot
I actually find yellow with black freckles right on the razor's edge of acceptable. any more than freckles is an oversweet mush, but any green and the texture is great but the flavor is off. can't do bruises or discolored parts tho. those little strands drive me crazy too.
No pouf, only cronch >:(
That's why I only eat refrigerated honey crisp apples
This happened to me and I thought I had Covid. #NeverAgain
Everyone gangsta until the apples get sand texture
No I like those ones :(
ok sorry
I hope you learned your lesson
I can't even Eat apples, and I fully understand this to my very Soul.
I feel that. Most fruits are Heavily Forbidden because of the stupid texture. Apples, bananas, pears, sometimes oranges, most berries, and pretty much almost all fruit except for very specific blueberries and kiwis are an absolute NO.

Ooh, we have almost exact opposite fruit preferences!
Fascinating. How do you manage bananas??
Or you bite expecting a crunch but get a chew instead, so you look at it and see half a worm.
just a nightmare, not real, doesnt happen 😰😰🥺🥺😭😭😭
Protein
Hate it so much
Honeycrisp is DA BOMB for this reason
😩 <<< my face right now, just thinking about it. Yikes.
I actually prefer the softer texture haha
THIS is why I can't eat apples, oh my gods. I hate it because I like the way they taste. But the grimy sound it makes and the texture...makes me shiver just thinking about it.

Til I've learned the reason why I like green apples more even thought I don't like sour things.

Wait, that's the best way to eat them! I cut them in slices and then snap pieces off, no other way is right!
I've tried to eat them the "right way," and it feels so wrong. Apparently I'm supposed to basically scrape my teeth along the flesh as I bite, but that's so bad im my opinion, it feels like I'm juicing it in the worst way possible
You're supposed to *w h a t*
i despise a grainy soft apple ugh i need to actually learn the differences in apples so i don't make that same mistake over and over again
I prefer it personally
ok
Uhhhh wtf
You guys actually eat apples? I only consume them in sauce form & they better have cinnamon!
Applesauce is a way worse sensory experience for me than regular apples lol I don’t enjoy mushes
Mushes make up the majority of my diet. I don't like having to bite & chew my food that much. I'm actually quite bad at it.
Same, eating apples is so unpleasant
If apples don’t crunch then I don’t want them
I dont really have a "squishy or crunchy" prefference, i just want it to .. make sense, like, an Apple is suposed to be crunchy, so if its not, i won't eat it, but say a pear is supposed to be kinda squishy, so if its crunchy, its gross Basically, i just don't want my food to lie to me
Into the bin it goes
OH MY GOD IT'S NOT JUST ME
I literally shuddered when I read this
Why did you remind me? This meme is cursed… This is also why I can’t eat apples anymore
fucking hate that why do my parents like the powdery boys and not the crispy boys
I prefer eating raw bell peppers. Less sugar, more vitamins, more fiber. I don't cut them up. I eat them like apples. I eat around the seeds.
This sounds nice actually
This one is individual, I think. I do relate, tho.
mmm love the ka-CHUNK
worse than nails on a chalkboard
It's *the worst!* I hate soft apples with a passion. I want mine with a thick skin and juicy hard inside. Thick skin because I like peeling them and that makes it easier. The combination isn't easy to find though. :(
blek it’s so fuckin disgusting
[zjierb](https://youtu.be/QHjRQwEQjJI)
That's why I wish my language was like japanese, they use onomatopoeias for everything
Krrtk
Or, get this, eat pineapples.
Yeah I do NOT like this (not an aspie but pretty sure adhd)
I hate this kind of texture, luckily my mom found an apple that is always perfect and sweet, it’s called fuji apple
Thats why I love hairless peaches and hate the hairy ones. Hairless peachers are crunchy and fresh The hairy ones are just... eugh...
Ugh those are the worst.
Soft apples exist?!?!?
I HATE THOSE APPLES AGHH. Overripe ones do it I've figured out.
The watermelon around the seeds is so grainy it makes me shake like its sour 😂
Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
The FACE I made. My whole upper body curled into a hunched-up, t-Rex-arms position with a facial expression that should not be seen on a human person lol
Solid apple: Gonna eat this thing down to the damn core Soft apple: *tosses it in disgust after the first bite while drinking some water to wash it away*
Omg it's the worst, it's terrible especially when you like apples.
Fruits have to be a tad unripe. And some apples are just horrible anyway.
Red Delicious apples can go to hell for this reason alone
LOL I love some of the words people are using to describe some of those sensory things that we don't have great words for! Also, this is me with watermelon. I can do early season watermelons but once most people consider them sweet they're completely inedible for me. Apples are just hard for me to eat because I have tmj and they hurt my gums.
I cannot deal with reading this why the hell is my apple being thanos’d
Any fruits but mainly peach, watermelon, apple and pear. I literally throw them away. People think I’m crazy or snobby or have a bad temper but I do not like soggy fruits!!!
Fr I love hard apples
This happened to me yesterday and I was so sad because it was my last apple and I didn’t wanna go to the store :(
Apples and bananas... okay actually all fresh fruit is such a crap shoot. It can be fantastic or absolutely disgusting. There's no middle ground
it’s so revolting, i hate red delicious apples specifically for this reason. pink lady, honey crisp, and granny smith have my heart
Repulsive.
This is why I stopped eating apples except for Galas
The agony
Apples like that are described as "mealy," and yeah, it's grody.
*Me who only liked pouf ones*
no. All the no. Throw the apple in the trash, set the trash on fire, demolish the house and bomb the rubble
It actually mortifies me how much I feel this particular post. I’m new to this. Like, that *pouf* I can distinctly FEEL in my head. It’s the worst, most disappointing sound/feeling ever. Especially when I’m excited that I bought apples.
Oh man I physically felt this meme. ***bleh bleh bleh no no no***
it sucks so much, cause most of my safe foods are fruits >:(
Can relate. Absolutely nasty🤢
I cringed hahaha
oh god don't do this to me i can already feel it in my mouth
Oh my god this literally happened to my TODAY
I actually like powder ones more.
This one mofo in my college class was unaware that there were different types of apples. We roasted them for at least 15 minutes about it
Where’s my KSHKSHKSHK gang? Firm but doesn’t just chunk away…
