There isn't much community to get involved in. I would strongly suggest that you do educate yourself. I think anyone interested in finding truth should read Carl Sagan's *Demon-Haunted World.* A good website to follow is [https://www.openskycc.com/](https://www.openskycc.com/). Paulogia is a great YouTube channel. Bart Ehrman has some great popular books on the New Testament. If you are Catholic, I suggest his books *How Jesus Became God* and *Lost Christianities.* If you want to be directly involved, I suggest becoming politically active. I am in a red state in the US. The most secular group I have encountered are the volunteers in the local Democratic party.

Are you thinking of atheism as a religion or club? Because it really isn't. It's a description of people who don't believe in any gods. The only reason we gather in places like this is because there are so many believers who make a big deal about the fact that we don't share their beliefs. You don't see a lot of clubs about people who don't golf or collect stamps, right?

LivinDeadGinger

Um, I was involved with a humanist/Atheist group approximately 5-6 years. They exist. It's about like minded people coming together for discussion, activities, and to try and do good without religion being attached to it. They aren't always easy to find but they are out there.

If you think that was aggressive I pity you when the gloves come off.

IntellectualYokel

Your university might have a club for atheists and agnostics.

thesunmustdie

If you Google the city you're moving to followed by "atheist"/"skeptic"/"secular"/"humanist"/"free thinker"/"rational"/etc. you're bound to find something. If you somehow don't, try starting your own group!

LivinDeadGinger

Agreed.

These_Ad_8414

Do you consider yourself an atheist already? Or are you looking to learn more about atheism?

stinkyredditor99

I'm looking to learn more about atheism

RaymondLuxuryYacth

Atheism just means not being convinced that gods exist. That's the only thing that all atheists have in common. There's nothing really to learn about atheism, because individual atheists believe in different things, appart from the gods question. Perhaps a more interesting endeavor would be to learn about the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which has one my favorite creation myths and pretty decent values to teach.

DoglessDyslexic

Well, the thing to realize is that atheism isn't a community in the way you're used to your religion being partly a community. Think of it like not believing in unicorns. People don't gather into a community because they share a lack of belief in unicorns. If it is a community you're looking for, I'd suggest looking at humanist groups, Sunday Assembly, or even the Unitarians (although the UU tend to have "woo", they accept anybody, including atheists). Don't get me wrong, atheists tend to be members of various communities, but those communities aren't based around atheism. Instead they're based around other common interests, like gaming, sports, reading, language study or the like.

Grillparzer47

We have a community?

Hopper1974

Atheists don't believe in a god (or any gods). That is it. They can have entirely different perspectives on everything else (and 'we' often do!). There are some secondary correlations, but that is more a matter of sociological and political interest (e.g. US atheists are more likely, on average \[note: only on average\], to be liberal and vote Democrat). So there isn't such a thing as the 'atheist community'. It annoys me a little when people talk about the 'gay community', as though one's sexual orientation is somehow defining of one's identity and all other beliefs. I rarely hear people refer to the 'straight community'. But, in all fairness, you simply asked an innocent question. I think you will find that, at university, you will meet more people who are atheist than in the wider population (partly because, unless you are attending an institution with a religious affiliation, the academics \[your professors\] are more likely to be atheist or agnostic compared with the wider population, partly because younger people are more likely to be atheist or exploring atheism, now finally free from family constraints and expectations, partly because one of the main functions of a university is to challenge you to think and to learn how to arrive at your own conclusions).

maltose66

See if you Uni. has a [Secular Student Alliance?](https://secularstudents.org/)

[deleted]

You don't convert to atheism, you deconvert from religion, you were born atheist. There is no atheist community, atheists have nothing in common, there are small atheist groups, all very informal and casual, organizing atheists is like herding cats.

MpVpRb

AFIK, there is no community. We are just people who do a lot of different things without religion. I'm a member of the engineering, inventing, and glassworking community

whiskeybridge

pursue your education, and work to secure education and material security for all. make secular friends. don't come out to your parents until you are financially and socially independent.

MetalMuppetManiac

Read Carl Sagan. Read/watch Joseph campbell. Study other religions. Learn about native American spirituality. Understanding the common mythology across different religions illuminates the reasons religions exist. Many of us conclude that it has nothing to do with god/s.

V1CTOR1OUS2020

It's not a club. Believe or don't.

Prestigious-Word-314

We meet up every Saturday to praise the lord of nothingness.

noeldc

Don't say convert Do say revert What community? Just don't associate with people who wear their religion on their sleeve (granted, that is probably a tall order in the US ;))

UsefulMortgage

There are secular communities on some universities. I think the atheist experience is promoting or funding a few up them. You can check them first to see if one is local.

Nkorayyy

There isnt an atheist community because we do not have something to believe in that would make us closer. mostly our hatred against fools and fairytales bring us together
