Sichuan River is legit - coming from a person who grew up eating my Sichuan mom’s cooking. I love the mala pork intestines and snow pea leaves. Dry pot lamb and the sweet and sour cabbage are good too.
I’ve only had them in the past month or so, so I don’t know. I’m with you on the new Google maps listing. My guess is that they deleted the old one to get rid of bad reviews, and probably/definitely changed cooks.
These are my favorites
Cumin lamb (for its spicy flavors. Coriander stems on top takes it to next level),
Mapo tofu,
Green beans,
Jumping fish (it’s not spicy at all but very flavorful)
Dry stir fry chicken (for the love of Sichuan paper corns)
Their Mapo Tofu, which is one of my favorite dishes of all time, is the best I have ever had. It’s also the one I have people try to get them to like tofu and/or mapo tofu. My friend was firmly anti-tofu and didn’t like mapo tofu because he tried one at an American Chinese place and it had peas and no pork or black beans. Which is obviously disgraceful.
Had him try a bite of my mapo tofu and he immediately ordered one for himself.
This. Too goddamn pricey now, but I have enjoyed the Sechuan chicken here so much more than house of three gorges. It’s salty, but China Family is good fr
Yeah love Three Gorges. Never had a bad dish. Flying Jumping Fish is my fave dish - pretty much all time - superb. Mapo Tofu was pretty good. I love Lamb but not a cumin fan. Hot chili oil fish - pretty good too. But that flying jumping fish - hot damn. They do a pretty damn good fried rice too. I think they are better than Bamboo House.
Funnily enough, a lot of them are in the same parking lot as House of Three Gorges.
Julie's has great noodles and dumplings, and Din Ho has great fried stuff and Chinese bbq (but avoid their Sichuan stuff, they're bad at it)
I feel about house of three gorges, how I feel about there’s just like how I feel about Austin. I wanted to be the last to find out about it, just to many people on the weekends now. I’m happy for the staff. Owner seems like a good dude, he deserves the popularity.
went a couple months ago on a Wednesday, 6pm, place was 1/2 - 2/3 full. food came quick and was, of course, delicious. just don't go on a weekend night.
I went to Three Gorges a couple weeks back with a group and found it lacking. I've enjoyed the Mala food at China Family and Asia Cafe substantially more than what I've had a Three Gorges.
***\*what\**** did you find lacking? I say this sincerely, as I find House of Three Gorges to be serving the \_most\_ authentic Szechuan food anywhere in Austin. Extremely flavorful, pungent and QUITE spicy by default... they wake the peppers in the hot-wok style and I have never had a disappointing visit in the last year.
The Mapo Tofu w/ Ground Pork is always spot-on when I order it. The Chongqing Mala Beef was not \_just\_ spicy, but super flavorful ( and that was just last week ... so this is recent )
Most of what we got was middling to me. My mainstays and beacons for mala food are what Three Gorges is calling "Blood Jelly & Intestine in Spicy Soup" and Chonqing Chicken - neither had the level of numbing I've come to love and the taste was just okay. The cumin lamb was also not very good, but I haven't had a place in Austin where it was good.
They will not make the Chonqing chicken ruthlessly spicy unless you ask him when you order it at the register. The average American palate can’t handle it. However, he does make it … just say “three gorges spicy”
I don’t know about the most authentic Sichuan in Austin. First, spice level isn’t the same. It’s also way saltier. It has some dishes better than China Family and vice versa. For example, the spicy crispy chicken. If you order in China it’s really serve on big plate and half of them is red chili peppers. House of Three Gorges serve with less peppers. It is more convenient to eat. Of course different type of fish is use here. Those they used in China have lots of bones.
guess I gotta try'em again
I ordered the beef n broc , chongqing mala chkn , Mongolian beef n egg rolls
It was ok, but didn't knock my socks off maybe it was an off day - I've haven't been or ordered since then
So what did you order, OP?

Went there a couple months ago! Thought it was good, but house of three gorges just blew me away
Oh nice, I gotta check out Gorges then!

Asia Cafe is better and it's the same menu.
Question: do they use real Sichuan peppercorns in their Sichuan chicken?
They don't. They use an oil and it makes me so sad. I still love Sichuan River tho.
Snow pea leaves are easily the most slept on Chinese dish and it isn't close.
I love the snow pea leaves. Maybe my favorite veggie dish in Austin.
Chef Hong. Feels homemade every time.
Chef Hong is another hole in the wall gem
I’ve been meaning to try that one. It’s that tiny truck close to campus, right?
Yup. The zha jiang mian is crazy good
The Rou Jia Mo is a Xian, China classic.
Yep. Pay with cash to avoid credit card fee.
Help with what to order. Thanks
Dry stir fried Sichuan chicken and *the green beans*
^ this one
Oh god... the green beans are CRACK. So is the eggplant.
Red braised pork belly (chairman mao dish). It will knock your socks off
Seconding this and adding that you should **definitely** get the eggplant.
Jumping fish!!!! I would never order fish, but someone suggested it, and it's what i order every time. Also I love the twice cooked pork!
found a pic on this post, looks great! will try. https://www.reddit.com/r/austinfood/comments/10ugkyv/had_great_chinese_sichuan_at_house_of_three/
Any lamb dish I’ve had there is phenomenal
Cumin lamb, jumping fish, and spicy crispy fried pork intestines have all been winners for me.

China Family
Yeah, China Family is also really good. I actually like it more.

Only been once and really need to go back. Awesome stuff
If you're feeling fancy, Ling Kitchen does an incredible tasting menu. Went there for my birthday last month.

Is pho van back open?
Almost! They are finalizing the repairs but there is a permitting issue.
Haven't had 3 gorges yet so cannot compare, and I am also white, but Bamboo House seems legit to me.

First Chinese BBQ for legit bbq pork and Cantonese food!
I always, ALWAYS get the pork intestine dry pot. It's fucking addictive.
Bro WTH how dare you make this post with these statements and NOT post what you ordered

The flavor is mostly there but the mala absolutely is not even when asking for extra spicy/numbing.

Don’t get the American- Chinese stuff there. It’s not what people go back for.
True, I'll def gonna go back !
