Endodondist (root canal specialist) will excavate any dead parts in the tooth's canals then fill them, and add a core as well (a ceramic spindle that will hold your crown). This is delicate, exacting work which is why it's great to see a specialist for it. Then back to dentist for the crown part. In this case, the endo and the crown might cost about the same If you have teeth where the roots are all still fine & alive, the dentist will excavate as needed at the top part of the tooth (including cutting back healthy tooth and fitting a core) then fit you for a crown. My recollection is you wear a temporary crown while the real one is made I've had both types done

Dentist who do root canal work have a greater rate of failure (plenty of litrature) vs an Endodondist. This sort of work is Endodondist's bread n butter and are highly skilled. Dentists like to play in this space as it is a big earner. Another way to put it is There are orthopedic surgeons that specialise in hip work only, and there are others that will happily do hip, knee, ankle, spine...... Plus not all nerves are dead. However once you do a root canal there's no going back!

asteroidorion

I've had two done by endos and agree, it's the only job they do and they do it to a detailed standard. You don't want a root canal blowing up on you

Separate-Share-8504

doing a root canal again isn't the end of the world... it just means another crown as you have to ruin the one in situ. Another $1800 alone

emmer1982

I had a root canal redone after having a crown put on and the endodontist drilled through the back of the crown and it was fine. Was an incisor though so might be different for a molar?

istara

Seconding this. My dentist, who is excellent at his job with decades of experienced, referred me straight to an endodontist for a root canal redo. It had originally been done by a regular dentist years before and had not been done as well as it could.

asteroidorion

It turned out I have C-shaped roots inside my teeth - these are harder to do well. So a good endodontist has been essential

No idea about the answer to your question.   I did want to jump in and say that I recently found out that teeth grinding can be associated with sleep apnea, and I wish that I had known that a lot sooner than I did. It might be worth getting checked out for that too.

seven_seacat

My dentist told me this last week, and I did an at/home sleep study… still waiting for the results. Good to know that my dentist wasn’t just trying to upsell me on the more expensive splint for no reason…

FisherMat

Yeah I have moderate obstructive sleep abnea, and a machine and masks that cost me over 3k that I can't tolerate...

HecticHazmat

Yes! My clenching/grinding has improved but I still do it, so still need a bite guard, but I don't jam that bite guard up into my skull so I practically have to yank my teeth out with the guard each morning which is nice 😅

Visible_Contact_8203

I swear by Botox injections into the jaw muscles. Not cheap, but cheaper than new teeth. I hate splints, can't sleep with them. Am overdue for my next one, time to find some money 🙄

HecticHazmat

Yeah splint + cpap is nuts. Plus I use ear plugs & a mask, so I am an absolute horror show. How often do you have to get the botox?

Visible_Contact_8203

It's supposed to last 6-9 months, and longer if you get it regularly. It's been a fair while since my last one, maybe 18 months? - if I can feel the stress hitting my jaw I know it's time to go again. It's not cheap!

pureneonn

The best person to ask is your dentist. Not all clinics are the same!

Mission_Literature44

Based off what happened to me. They root canal first. Then if the original tooth has enough integrity they grind it down to a stump and stick a crown on. 30k sound more like a implants.

nathanjessop

If your dentist said you need “ a mouthful of crowns” get a second opinion

11MARISA

I'm not a dentist. But I have had a crown done and they removed all the nerves first. Interestingly, it can be variable how many nerves each tooth has.

CatDogAU

Not a dentist, but I have just been told by one that I need a couple of crowns. This clinic said they specifically do tests on the nerve and check tooth suitability for a crown BEFORE they move to the next phase, because while it’s possible to do a root canal after a crown, they’d prefer rule out that one isn’t needed first. But other clinics may vary.

Separate-Share-8504

Wife's a dentist. Not asked her. 100% get another opinion. Always!

ParmenidesDuck

I use medical cannabis to help with the chronic pain aspects. It does increase sleep quality, and reduce frequency of migraines significantly. However, I also use a splint, I don't have sleep apnea, and my teeth are (hopefully) not literally going to shit in this cost of living crisis. Also not a dentist.

maxinstuff

Damn. It’s shitty that our public health system does fuck-all for dental. In your situation I would absolutely use my super money… you just… shouldn’t have to 🤖

Brazilian-chew-bitsu

The dentist should arrive at a specific diagnosis for the pain you’re experiencing, for each individual tooth, then treat accordingly. “Exposed nerves” could mean dentinal hypersensitivity, as actual exposed pulps would very quickly result in dead pulps, (which then turns into abscess-type pain). There may be other options for treatment of the pain that don’t involve crowns at all. Not all dental pain requires treatment with root canal therapy, not all teeth that would benefit from crowns need root canal therapy, and some dentists argue that not all teeth that have had root canal therapy need crowns. Unfortunately it’s not possible to answer your question without a lot more diagnostic information. Your dentist has an obligation to explain your diagnoses in a way you can understand, and go through all of your treatment options outlining the pros and cons of each. Personally I wouldn’t prepare a single tooth for a crown until the pain was diagnosed and resolved. But you’ll get different dentists with different philosophies, you should find one who explains things well so you can make your own informed choices.

Parents recently went to China (they are from there) and got their teeth done for cheap too, and the tech they have there was much fancier too apparently.

savage_aussie

Teeth grinding is also symptoms of parasites. We worm our animals often but never ourselves. Do a parasite cleanse and feel amazing. Week one sucks by week three you get a sense of vitality back. It’s worth it!

istara

If you have kids, particularly daycare and primary age, consider a family worm tablet once every six months anyway. I also take two a few days apart. I don't believe the "one dose" thing because it doesn't seem to fit with the lifecycle of threadworms/pinworms.
