McDonald's has done a really good job at maintaining its reputation of being a cheap takeaway despite raising prices and lowering portion sizes and being pretty unaffordable to a lot of families

Mephisto506

It really shows the power of advertising and branding, which makes sense given how much money corporations like McDonalds spends on it.

Eyclonus

The only thing that matters these days is how you appear, not what you are.

Lew_bear96

I've noticed this trend more and more. Advertising and brand name recognition seem to be very effective tools at swaying the masses.

mumooshka

>lowering portion sizes Domino's just as guilty. Their 13" pizzas are never that size. I measured mine one day and it was 10" I took a photo and put it on a review site. Found a local pizzeria where the size is as indicated and the pizzas are much better quality for the same price, who deliver too. Check out your local businesses.

GregoryGregorson1962

There's a pizza joint in my suburb that only takes cash, is only open a couple days a week at weird times and is akin to the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld but damn that dude can make a good pizza. 1 pizza is about 3 times the cost of Domino's but weighs about the same as 3 Domino's pizzas so is worth it to me. I refuse to go to Domino's now unless I'm desperate for shitty pizza

Deep__Friar

Is this in Victoria because I had pizza from a guy very similar. He threw out the people ahead of us because they took too long. Second best pizza I've ever had though.

4ssteroid

Domino's is cheap as hell though. That's what you get for $5-18. Local pizzerias are much better but much more expensive too, usually 2x-3x as much.

sping1-10

Love pizza. What’s the place?

IWantAHandle

And not being food

Bigbillbroonzy

And they take forever now to get your food to you. Their KPIs seem to only count wait times at the actual drive through window and not in the waiting bags so they just ask you to move on to the waiting bay and you can sometimes wait ten minutes for “fast” food.

rastagizmo

It has started to take 20 minutes in the drive through to get a coffee in the morning. Screw that. I have 2 walk up cafes on my way to work that I can text my order to, pull up, walk 20 meters, say good morning, pay for my waiting coffee and walk back to my car in under 5 minutes. Much better coffee as well.

hannahspants

Used to work there and can confirm. The waiting bay is outside the zone at which the drive thru system counts wait times (for good reason, but it's abused as a matter of unwritten policy) One of the stores I worked at also had a glitch whereby if a car was stopped in between the pay and food windows, the timer would reset so we'd often be encouraged to pretend there was broken glass or something and stop cars in that glitch zone.

Sufficient_Ad_1922

It’s not cheap anymore and their main strengths are the culture with Gen X & Gen Y that they have created through marketing and also convenience. I’m not so sure this model is sustainable for future generations as there are cheaper healthier options now readily available. Its shit food.

TooMuchTaurine

Honestly with the amount of calories in the average meal, it's probably good they are lowering portion sizes..

Bunyep

How is paying more for less better? If you want less calories just order less

ruinawish

> McDonald's has done a really good job at maintaining its reputation of being a cheap takeaway despite raising prices tbh, I don't think McDonald's have had to do anything marketing wise. I think on nostalgia (and culture) alone, people continue to eat Maccas despite there being vastly better options.

woodyrogers

I’m shocked by how much a large fries cost now..I got charged $4.60…like seriously? Good old Red Rooster has large chips for $2.50 with gravy. EDIT: okay, I get it maccas is bad for you. You don't have to reply saying it now.

jimjamcunningham

Red rooster is good now. It's crazy that I've managed to live long enough to see it.

Geoff_Uckersilf

Their new fried chicken rivals KFC too.

BillsDownUnder

Not rivals, its sooooooo much better... so damn crispy

[deleted]

It's far superior to KFC. Far less greasy and the batter is crunchier and tastier.

[deleted]

Guess I’m trying red rooster this week. KFC really dropped tha ball by fucking up their twisters and putting corn chips in them. Like wtf.

aussiederpyderp

It all began when they dropped the Crispy Strips and turned them in to the pathetic thing that is the Tender.

Richie217

Buttermilk wings > Wicked wings. I say this as someone who fucking loves wicked wings.

downbythesea

Red always seem to being out a new menu item and its good for 6 months then the quality starts falling.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jackarall

They're $2.50 on Tuesdays, at least at my local Red rooster. $4.95 the rest of the week.

hawonkafuckit

They're $2.50 with gravy everyday at the moment (banners outside stores and saw a TV ad). Probably only for this month so I'm guessing it's the last day.

Quattro439

Yep in the last two years at work I've seen the prices rise enormous amounts. Literally 30% for some products. Large chips from 3.15 to 4.20?? How could that possibly be healthy.

[deleted]

[удалено]

starfihgter

As an ex red rooster employee, please don’t support Red Rooster. Culture of employee abuse, poor hygiene and general scumminess across both franchised and head office locations.

CompetitiveMud2464

Yep. I don't work at RR, but clean for them after hours when they know they have an inspection coming. Easily the worst kept kitchens I have ever seen. Not the kids fault. They don't get paid after 10 when the joint shuts, and they always complain they aren't paid right. Green chicken getting served. Chicken two weeks past used by. Rats and roaches everywhere. Then instead of getting me to clean anything of importance, pay me 140 dollars to clean the glass for 2 hours.

[deleted]

Do you report it to health and safety cause you shoud

CompetitiveMud2464

If you mean health department or whatever name they go by, yeah. Same as their head office. But it really is useless. Those things have no teeth. They warn before they come. Can't come unannounced usually. And places like RR get so much leeway.

woodyrogers

Sorry to hear that, To be honest red rooster has always been down on my list of fast food. As a Newcastle local Henny Penny was always above Red Rooster.

TheGodDamnDevil

That's a shake? That's milk and ice cream? That's five dollars? You don't put bourbon in it or nothing?

giacintam

RIP 30c cones

[deleted]

Bro if you rip 30c cones, you're smoking Schwag

giacintam

The 30c cones are for after the 30c cone

soft_white_yosemite

You mean 20c cones lol

AriesDog82

Mcchickens are definitely mcshit now, and I just really don't bother with fast food anymore as I keep getting disappointed.

[deleted]

They made them mcshit so you buy the “gourmet chicken” range which are basically glorified mc chickens and are more expensive

BumWink

The gourmet chicken range is actual chicken breast though where McChickens are heavily processed chicken, tasty processed shit, but processed shit nonetheless. Now personally i'd say actual chicken breast albeit cooked to the standards of fast food, is a worthwhile step above glorified processed shit. In any case you'll almost always be better off just going to your local chicken shop.

YoureNotAGenius

Our local Maccas is abysmal. Forget basic things like sauce and drinks almost every time. The final straw was when they gave us a burger that had two bottoms as the buns. I haven't had Maccas in about 6 months now, and I used to get it fairly frequently. I'm a HJ person now and they haven't disappointed yet

sheryltannen

You must live near a ripper of a HJ’s. Our two locals suck so bad that it’s a good visit if you don’t end up sick afterwards!

EmergencyTelephone

I love HJs but I swear they’re always so slow. My local takes like 15-20 minutes to make 1 meal

rubybooby

I’ve been anti HJs ever since I inexplicably got a burger from them that was wet. Like with water. As if someone knocked over a cup of water or something directly onto the food, went “oh well” and bagged it up anyway. I don’t know what goes on in the kitchen there but it can’t be anything good

YoureNotAGenius

Yeah they're really solid! Our old one in QLD wasn't so good so that's why we stopped going there

MaleficentPriority68

Most HJ venues are filthy in Melbourne.

ireallyloveshopping

My local KFC is like this. Without a doubt, 90% of the time they will forget something in the order. My family in the area have had the same experience. I do wonder if it's part of the owners plan to increase profits sometimes.

marmalade

Nah, some fast food kitchens are run really well and some are understaffed war zones where no-one gives a shit.

superbabe69

This. It’s highly store-dependent. Maccas in EVP, Perth is always quality (consistently decent or great), KFC Belmont, Perth is 9/10 better than good, 1/10 awful. The trick is finding one close that delivers decent standards regularly and sticking to it. Once you have found it, you will be disappointed going anywhere else.

YoureNotAGenius

They're just franchises and some have shit managers that hire shit people. That's what's up with the Maccas. Our local KFC is 🔥 Never fails

mad87645

I was a Maccas-turned-HJs person until it started taking 20 minutes to go through their drive through with only 4 cars in front. Like what are they doing in there that takes that long, growing the wheat and raising the cattle themselves? Now I'm an Ubereats a pulled beef burrito person

YoureNotAGenius

I have noticed that it's slower but if being quicker means no Sweet and Sour and shitty burgers, then I'll accept slow

Churchofbabyyoda

Maccas almost always fucks my orders up. That’s why, if I want fast food, my go to is KFC.

engkybob

KFC is pretty shit too. IMO Red Rooster is where it's at if you want fast food chicken.

[deleted]

Maccas is only worth it now if you have the app and get the app-only deals. $1.50 apple pies, $3 McMuffins, small meals with an extra burger for $6, $1 coffees, $2 hamburgers, 2x small quarter pounder meals for $12. Plus the feeling of superiority zooming past boomers in the drive through.

PorkHuntt

Wait a second are you saying their app actually works these days?

[deleted]

Most of the time. I’ve had a 20% off my order deal stuck in the app for months that doesn’t work when added to the cart. And I left an expired debit card as the payment method but somehow my order still went through. But on their end the payment declined. Ended up getting free food.

Piezakster

Isn't that the one that requires you to spend like $35 to get the 20% off though? But yeah, I generally rate the app pretty well

Dilest

Bingo. They make the prices insane and then push downloading the app through events so they can push notifications to you directly. That makes you feel like you're getting a discount when you're not. You're just purchasing the price it would have been 5 years ago.

[deleted]

The app is a superior experience than in-store or drive through orders. No pressure, no communication problems, no trying to read text on a constantly changing menu board. But seriously what costs the same as it did 5 years ago?

dogcatball

Yep. Been getting small double beef n bacon meals for 6$ the last month.

kuribosshoe0

There’s something deeply unsatisfying about it, too. I had maccas for the first time in years and I finished the burger in like 5 bites in about a minute and it didn’t sate me at all. I don’t know if it’s because it’s small, because it’s just sugar with no nutritional value, because it just dissolves in my mouth with almost zero chewing, or what. It tasted ok, but it’s like my body didn’t recognise it as food.

Odd_Analysis6454

But if you two burgers you feel weirdly full yet unsatisfied

Resist_Easy

Yup, totally.

SirFireHydrant

> It tasted ok, but it’s like my body didn’t recognise it as food. That's how I feel too. You put it into words perfectly.

torrens86

I'm in my mid 30s and remember when a large Big Mac meal was $4.95.

fortalyst

30c soft serve cone days

soggystep

Early 40s and I reckon we were pretty lucky about that time. Value meals for $5 were tops, especially if you found a few coins on the ground. Basically free food!

whiteb8917

I still remember when Egg / Bacon Mcmuffin was less than $2, that was my morning treat after working nights. Now they can Go Get .........................

AugmentCB

McFukt

mattkenny

Now they charge $2.50 just for a hash brown

engkybob

Hash brown prices are criminal. They used to be $1. Nowadays I just get them .50c from Woolies and heat them in the air fryer.

Afferbeck_

Fucking hell, that's servo bain marie prices, not biggest fast food corp in the world prices.

alliwantisburgers

I've never been a fan of the chicken items apart from nuggest at Maccas. They have super cheap breading and are tasteless. Quarter pounder is still nb and maccas is just a convenience thing. Often open 24 hours and more accessable. I would say if you can get a bahn mi or cheap chinese it is hard to beat

Superb-Mall3805

There’s something about a quarter pounder that is like crack to me. I know people say maccas is gross but if I had no regard for my health I would genuinely eat 5 and enjoy it.

greeneighteen

Oh man, a double quarter pounder with extra onions. It's worth the McShit you have to do afterwards.

Talonus11

Only reason quarter pounder is still good is that the meat patty has to stay the same size because it's a quarter of a pound of meat. If you go back, you'll notice that the bun used to fit the patty. Since they couldnt reduce the amount of meat, they just reduced the amount of everything else so the meat sticks out.

PeriodSupply

Just because it's called a quarter pounder doesn't mean they need to give you a quarter pound of meat. Just ask subway.

-HouseProudTownMouse

Congratulations. You're officially old. 😁

jerrycat88

I’m old enough to remember the unhealthy oil they cooked the chips in that made them taste sooooo good. And they even salted the chips as well

Inert-Blob

Its such a shame they can’t make the fries taste better than eating paper. The only thing selling their fries is us oldies who remember they tasted good in our childhood, but are too stupid to remember that actually last 10 times they were shite.

ding-d1ng-ding

Lifeprotip. Get a senior discount card to mitigate inflation.

kitchen_masturbator

Everyone reaches an age where it just starts to taste like absolute shit, especially the fries and coke. Also, big macs are tiny now!! They're a couple of mouthfuls at best, and the cost of a meal deal is the same as a subway or local burger place. Basically, Maccas meals are small, horrid tasting, and terrible value. The opposite of what they're supposed to be.

qw46z

I had a steak sandwich with a side of chips for $12 at the pub yesterday. Plus $4 for a lemon, lime & bitters. Much much better value than maccas.

Talonus11

Jeez, would love to have a pub near me that had a steak sandwich with chips for $12...

-malcolm-tucker

All I want and all I need...

[deleted]

Is a good pub feed!

PharaohXYZ

The cheap food is just to get you in there. They probably make no money or even a loss on it. The real $$$ are in the booze.

qw46z

And the pokies.

AFAR85

To be fair HJs and KFC are the same. It's not just a maccas thing.

torrens86

Yeah but KFC has gone up like $2 in 10 years while Macca's has gone up $4+. KFC used to be more expensive than Maccas.

GrillDruid

Yeah, Kentucky fried chicken was about 2-3 times more expensive per person in the 80s and 90s. I only ever had it at funerals.

Superb-Mall3805

Hahaha. The first two times i had KFC in my life were the nights of my first holy communion and my confirmation. Those were apparently special enough days that I got my request for KFC granted. I couldn’t even get it on my birthday!

OCE_Mythical

How did they survive in those times? If it was too expensive for people to eat regularly

nipps01

Used to be something people went to after church as a treat around my area. It was more expensive than maccas but still cheaper than most restaurants and definitely quicker.

GrillDruid

U/Nipps01 is right it was more of a family treat or like a few buckets of chicken and coleslaw for party catering. They were few and far between too. They didn't really market on meals for one until the late 90s. Their first attempt at change that I recall was to do roast chicken for a bit to try to take business from Red Rooster. Then they focused on selling to drunks at 2am in the city centre and then low income communities.

goss_bractor

Have you seen the size of the chicken pieces at kfc? They are legit nearly fucking quail now.

leafyboiz

I’ve had this same thought! A couple of times the original recipe drumsticks have been smaller than the wicked wings drumettes. Couldn’t believe it.

anafuckboi

HJ always has hot chips unlike McDonald’s, at least the hoddle st one does

[deleted]

The burgers are also bigger at HJs. And tasty too

Cimb0m

At least HJs is somewhat edible

ConceptObvious8850

KFC is total crap now. Chips are hard squishy weird and potato and gravy tastes off.

mewfour123412

Plus they got rid of the 10 pieces of $10

[deleted]

You can still make HJs work though. Went in for 2 storms, ended $5 extra per person to get a burger, chips, drink and 3 nugs on the side.

GoldilokZ_Zone

Agree 100%. Bought maccas just yesterday for 4 people and it cost $53. I can feed the same 4 people from a fish n chips shop for just under $30.

No_pajamas_7

It's value proposition has shifted a lot I. The past 15 years. It used to be inexplicably cheap. "How can they do it that cheap". Now it's inexplicably expensive.

RecognitionOne395

limlwl

The Big Mac should be called Mini Mac

Confusedparents10

If we buy a family box 4 or 6 burgers it costs something $30-$40. It feeds four of us with no left overs. A local pizza place does 2 large pizzas with drink and garlic bread for the price of the two pizzas (about $33) 1 pizza is enough for all of us and we would have an entire pizza the following night. But now if I cook up spaghetti sauce 1kg mince etc without doing too much calculations I'd estimate it'd cost $20 and we would get 2-3 meals. Oh and parmi around here is about $28 a pop. It's all bloody expensive now, we try our hardest to make all meals, but some days we get too busy and go the pizza.

notthinkinghard

Surely 2 of your family members are very small children if one pizza feeds four of you? Or you all have abnormally small appetites.

Acceptable-Wallaby52

I need one pizza just for me

Resist_Easy

I was thinking the same.. like sheesh. I couldn’t just eat two pieces of pizza for dinner. Unless there was like a decent salad with it, it had loads of toppings too. Then I’d probably be fine and kinda full. Just because there’s lots of calories doesn’t make it filling. Hence why my usual meals are protein and tonnes and veggies. Voluuuuume.

dickbutt2202

Ye I get where you're coming from. Even something like Thai - 2 dishes and rice can feed 4 people for about $40. Comes out to be better value, tasting and health wise. Literally no point to get "fast food"

angrathias

I eat Thai food all the time (wife is Thai), and for 2 adults and 2 kids we’d rarely get away for under $100. Thai is like one, if not the most expensive take away Asian food. I don’t know how you’re getting away for $40

dickbutt2202

Pad Thai, massumun (sp?)beef and a coconut rice for $40 gives my wife and I two enough for dinner and a lunch the next day

kn0ath

Hash browns $2.50. Piss take

bulldogs1974

50c at Woolies. For a company with the advertising pull of Macca's they shouldn't be more than $1.

[deleted]

That is the one thing that blows my mind - cheap as shit to make and cook but they charge fucking 2.50 for *one*. Haven't had Macca's in years, no regrets

Beischlaf

Yeah except with GYG you're paying like $22 for a meal. Why not ditch this garbage and support some nice local takeaway places?

RecognitionOne395

I honestly don't think GYG is all that great for the price they charge.

Mathuselahh

Yeah I feel like GyG used to be amazing but has shat the bed since getting super popular. Their old Fajita with mushrooms and capsicum with included guac was God tier

DoNotReply111

My local Zambreros wants $20 for a Burrito Bowl that is 75% white rice and beans. Not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, although probably slightly healthier than Maccas.

smallsizecat

I lived in California and have eaten thousands of burritos and GYG is absolute garbage. It was started by a white Wall St. banker with no food background to build a franchise business model. It's all marketing, no authenticity.

bigspoonhead

Is there any good legitimate Mexican food in Perth? Best I've had outside Mexico itself was a place in Newcastle.

linkuei-teaparty

The other day I got two large fries and 3 hasbrowns and that cost me $18. How does that make sense?

bulldogs1974

You could have bought a 10kg sack of potatoes for that, you would have had chips for weeks

hanls

My mum is almost infamous amongst our close friends for her maccas order of a medium fillet o fish and a Diet Coke. Another friend has this year long running prank going with leaving a fillet o fish for a friend in more and more obscure places (like calling it into his work over the woolies intercom)

tvtraelller

I am 48, not just maccas. Much as i love fish and chips i feel ill when I hand over 70 dollars to feed 4 people. My kids but door dash or whatever its called and holy, they will pay 40 dollars for lunch. Give me Vegemite toast any day.

Afferbeck_

No idea why fish and chips got so expensive in the past 10 or 15 years. I guess because of the tourist draw? Last time I got it with my dad was probably 5 years ago and it was about 50 bucks for the two of us. And fish and chips is so hit or miss. Sometimes everything will be light and crispy, sometimes it's all soggy and stodgy. Always costs a lot.

r64fd

Our 22 year old will order sushi for lunch on a Saturday delivered. It’s over $40. Then he grumbles about being broke paying for his share of the internet and his phone.

batch1972

they taste awful as well. We have a local chicken shop man and get schnitty and chippies for less than the cost of a large big mac meal

xAPx-Bigguns

I’m 38 I remember when you get get a big Mac meal for like $5. Prices are shit house for what’s you get now days. I bought a steak sandwich from this sweet buthcher that has a meal place attached the other day $16.50. I thought a little steep but then it was big was done on some sort of fancy bun like focaccia bread or something. Scotch fillet steak and not just a crappy thin slice, was thin but folded over was a more than decent amount steak in every bite with spill over had bacon real bacon more than 1 slice, egg and salad was so good. And I thought to myself fuck fast food now days. I’m eating here now when I shop at Indooroopilly

hannahspants

I worked at Maccas for 7 years between 2008-2015. When I started, cheeseburgers were $1.95, happy meals were $4.95, Big Macs were $4.95, quarter pounders were $4.95. Every so often I'd come to work and everything was 5-10c more. And I remember when they made the buns smaller too - that also came with a price increase that was sold as the meat to bun ratio and therefore the burger being better all around.

cuttlefish10

So you would have rode the Chicken and Cheese wave. $2 when it came out, it's like $4.50 now... wtf

hannahspants

Yup, I remember the loose change menu when it launched. Chicken and mayo, mcdouble, chicken and cheese, mcbites all $2!

ADHDK

I remember when I was younger kfc seemed a bit rich and maccas was the affordable takeaway. Now is it just me or have kfc barely increased prices while McDonald’s has gone whole hog jump into another bracket? Maccas isn’t worth what they’re asking at all, and kfc suddenly seems to hold better value (cabbage excluded).

[deleted]

I have no idea why McDonalds is so popular. It is garbage food sold at independent cafe prices. On paper it should be an abandoned wasteland with no one interested in what they offer. Imagine this: some kid grows up in the bush and has never been exposed to McD's, they go to the city and try it as a young adult... what would they think of it?

theshaqattack

“Jeez this is good while I’m pissed in the city at 2am”.

[deleted]

It also has the taste and texture of spongey plastic.

Agent_Jay_42

I don't know if anyone noticed, but McDonald's significantly increased the price of nearly all their menu items during the height of the first lockdowns to cash in on the new-found wealth thanks to jobseeker payments from the government, as well as shrinking a few product packages as well. They don't have anything new and the only desire to return to them is when the Grand Big Mac promotion comes round or the occasional ice cream if the machine is working. I don't know how they are so popular, you wouldn't get change from a $50 with a family of 4 just about.

iammerelyhere

How about the $4 basic cheeseburger now??

RecognitionOne395

$4?!?! Holy shit. I haven't been to an Aussie Macca's in over 25 years (been living in the US). But in the US a cheeseburger was on the "Value Menu" and I think they were $1.

PrimaxAUS

Whats the alternative that's good, fast and cheaper?

RecognitionOne395

"Good, fast, and cheap" are words that very rarely go together.

the_mooseman

Pick 2.

RecognitionOne395

I honestly don't think you could even pick 2 fur MacDonald's. Because Macca's isn't good, it's not fast anymore, and it certainly isn't cheap.

Peak McDonald's was when I was a stoner kid in the 90s and maccas would honor vouchers from HJ. Use to get magazine worth of vouchers in the letterbox every other week.

yes. thats right. you are totally right.

I've never really craved maccas. Their burgers are boring. Legit red rooster triple fillet burgers are way better. Kfcs are too. Maccas has the best deserts tho.

ThatOldGuyWhoDrinks

The thing is your not buying food. Your buying time and convenience and people will pay for that

ThinkingOz

I gave up on Maccas food a long time ago. Expensive rubbish.

taboosie

Went in the other day and saw the cheapest burger, a simple cheeseburger by itself, was like $4. Immediately left lol.

drewdles33

I remember getting a sack of lollies for 20c

Terrorfarker

Those were the days man, $1 worth if mixed lollies from the milk bar was one of those white paper bags packed to the brim.
