There's a pizza joint in my suburb that only takes cash, is only open a couple days a week at weird times and is akin to the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld but damn that dude can make a good pizza.
1 pizza is about 3 times the cost of Domino's but weighs about the same as 3 Domino's pizzas so is worth it to me. I refuse to go to Domino's now unless I'm desperate for shitty pizza
Is this in Victoria because I had pizza from a guy very similar. He threw out the people ahead of us because they took too long. Second best pizza I've ever had though.
And they take forever now to get your food to you. Their KPIs seem to only count wait times at the actual drive through window and not in the waiting bags so they just ask you to move on to the waiting bay and you can sometimes wait ten minutes for “fast” food.
It has started to take 20 minutes in the drive through to get a coffee in the morning. Screw that.
I have 2 walk up cafes on my way to work that I can text my order to, pull up, walk 20 meters, say good morning, pay for my waiting coffee and walk back to my car in under 5 minutes. Much better coffee as well.
Used to work there and can confirm. The waiting bay is outside the zone at which the drive thru system counts wait times (for good reason, but it's abused as a matter of unwritten policy)
One of the stores I worked at also had a glitch whereby if a car was stopped in between the pay and food windows, the timer would reset so we'd often be encouraged to pretend there was broken glass or something and stop cars in that glitch zone.
It’s not cheap anymore and their main strengths are the culture with Gen X & Gen Y that they have created through marketing and also convenience.
I’m not so sure this model is sustainable for future generations as there are cheaper healthier options now readily available.

tbh, I don't think McDonald's have had to do anything marketing wise. I think on nostalgia (and culture) alone, people continue to eat Maccas despite there being vastly better options.

Yep. I don't work at RR, but clean for them after hours when they know they have an inspection coming. Easily the worst kept kitchens I have ever seen. Not the kids fault. They don't get paid after 10 when the joint shuts, and they always complain they aren't paid right. Green chicken getting served. Chicken two weeks past used by. Rats and roaches everywhere. Then instead of getting me to clean anything of importance, pay me 140 dollars to clean the glass for 2 hours.
If you mean health department or whatever name they go by, yeah. Same as their head office. But it really is useless. Those things have no teeth. They warn before they come. Can't come unannounced usually. And places like RR get so much leeway.

To be honest red rooster has always been down on my list of fast food.
As a Newcastle local Henny Penny was always above Red Rooster.
The gourmet chicken range is actual chicken breast though where McChickens are heavily processed chicken, tasty processed shit, but processed shit nonetheless.
Now personally i'd say actual chicken breast albeit cooked to the standards of fast food, is a worthwhile step above glorified processed shit.
In any case you'll almost always be better off just going to your local chicken shop.
Our local Maccas is abysmal. Forget basic things like sauce and drinks almost every time. The final straw was when they gave us a burger that had two bottoms as the buns. I haven't had Maccas in about 6 months now, and I used to get it fairly frequently. I'm a HJ person now and they haven't disappointed yet
I’ve been anti HJs ever since I inexplicably got a burger from them that was wet. Like with water. As if someone knocked over a cup of water or something directly onto the food, went “oh well” and bagged it up anyway. I don’t know what goes on in the kitchen there but it can’t be anything good
My local KFC is like this. Without a doubt, 90% of the time they will forget something in the order. My family in the area have had the same experience. I do wonder if it's part of the owners plan to increase profits sometimes.
This. It’s highly store-dependent. Maccas in EVP, Perth is always quality (consistently decent or great), KFC Belmont, Perth is 9/10 better than good, 1/10 awful.
The trick is finding one close that delivers decent standards regularly and sticking to it. Once you have found it, you will be disappointed going anywhere else.

And I left an expired debit card as the payment method but somehow my order still went through. But on their end the payment declined. Ended up getting free food.
Bingo. They make the prices insane and then push downloading the app through events so they can push notifications to you directly. That makes you feel like you're getting a discount when you're not. You're just purchasing the price it would have been 5 years ago.
The app is a superior experience than in-store or drive through orders. No pressure, no communication problems, no trying to read text on a constantly changing menu board.
But seriously what costs the same as it did 5 years ago?
There’s something deeply unsatisfying about it, too. I had maccas for the first time in years and I finished the burger in like 5 bites in about a minute and it didn’t sate me at all. I don’t know if it’s because it’s small, because it’s just sugar with no nutritional value, because it just dissolves in my mouth with almost zero chewing, or what. It tasted ok, but it’s like my body didn’t recognise it as food.
Early 40s and I reckon we were pretty lucky about that time. Value meals for $5 were tops, especially if you found a few coins on the ground. Basically free food!
I still remember when Egg / Bacon Mcmuffin was less than $2, that was my morning treat after working nights.

I've never been a fan of the chicken items apart from nuggest at Maccas. They have super cheap breading and are tasteless.
Quarter pounder is still nb and maccas is just a convenience thing. Often open 24 hours and more accessable.
I would say if you can get a bahn mi or cheap chinese it is hard to beat
There’s something about a quarter pounder that is like crack to me. I know people say maccas is gross but if I had no regard for my health I would genuinely eat 5 and enjoy it.
Only reason quarter pounder is still good is that the meat patty has to stay the same size because it's a quarter of a pound of meat. If you go back, you'll notice that the bun used to fit the patty. Since they couldnt reduce the amount of meat, they just reduced the amount of everything else so the meat sticks out.
Its such a shame they can’t make the fries taste better than eating paper. The only thing selling their fries is us oldies who remember they tasted good in our childhood, but are too stupid to remember that actually last 10 times they were shite.
Everyone reaches an age where it just starts to taste like absolute shit, especially the fries and coke.
Also, big macs are tiny now!! They're a couple of mouthfuls at best, and the cost of a meal deal is the same as a subway or local burger place.

Hahaha. The first two times i had KFC in my life were the nights of my first holy communion and my confirmation. Those were apparently special enough days that I got my request for KFC granted. I couldn’t even get it on my birthday!
Used to be something people went to after church as a treat around my area. It was more expensive than maccas but still cheaper than most restaurants and definitely quicker.
U/Nipps01 is right it was more of a family treat or like a few buckets of chicken and coleslaw for party catering. They were few and far between too. They didn't really market on meals for one until the late 90s.
Their first attempt at change that I recall was to do roast chicken for a bit to try to take business from Red Rooster. Then they focused on selling to drunks at 2am in the city centre and then low income communities.
It's value proposition has shifted a lot I. The past 15 years. It used to be inexplicably cheap. "How can they do it that cheap".
Now it's inexplicably expensive.
If we buy a family box 4 or 6 burgers it costs something $30-$40. It feeds four of us with no left overs.
A local pizza place does 2 large pizzas with drink and garlic bread for the price of the two pizzas (about $33) 1 pizza is enough for all of us and we would have an entire pizza the following night.
But now if I cook up spaghetti sauce 1kg mince etc without doing too much calculations I'd estimate it'd cost $20 and we would get 2-3 meals.
Oh and parmi around here is about $28 a pop.
It's all bloody expensive now, we try our hardest to make all meals, but some days we get too busy and go the pizza.
I was thinking the same.. like sheesh. I couldn’t just eat two pieces of pizza for dinner. Unless there was like a decent salad with it, it had loads of toppings too. Then I’d probably be fine and kinda full. Just because there’s lots of calories doesn’t make it filling. Hence why my usual meals are protein and tonnes and veggies. Voluuuuume.
Ye I get where you're coming from. Even something like Thai - 2 dishes and rice can feed 4 people for about $40. Comes out to be better value, tasting and health wise.

My local Zambreros wants $20 for a Burrito Bowl that is 75% white rice and beans.

I lived in California and have eaten thousands of burritos and GYG is absolute garbage. It was started by a white Wall St. banker with no food background to build a franchise business model. It's all marketing, no authenticity.
The fillet of fish shrank to almost half of the size from when I was a teen. It’s sad because I’d gladly pay more if inflation was hitting it, but I didn’t want the burger to shrink. It just makes me feel cheated.
In the USA, it was designed for those who abstain from meat for religious reasons on the Sabbath and successful as a result. Guess the directive is to keep it going in Australia.
As a teenager I went entire shifts without selling one. For days at a time the only reason I’d make them was because the they’d timed out of the production bin. Strangely they were never on the ‘loss’ reports (nuggets were always..misplaced the most)
I do, although I eat Maccas about once a year so surely wouldn't influence its continued existence. Last time I had one though, it was tiny and dry af, so it may have been my last.
My mum is almost infamous amongst our close friends for her maccas order of a medium fillet o fish and a Diet Coke.
Another friend has this year long running prank going with leaving a fillet o fish for a friend in more and more obscure places (like calling it into his work over the woolies intercom)
I am 48, not just maccas. Much as i love fish and chips i feel ill when I hand over 70 dollars to feed 4 people. My kids but door dash or whatever its called and holy, they will pay 40 dollars for lunch. Give me Vegemite toast any day.

Last time I got it with my dad was probably 5 years ago and it was about 50 bucks for the two of us. And fish and chips is so hit or miss. Sometimes everything will be light and crispy, sometimes it's all soggy and stodgy. Always costs a lot.

I worked at Maccas for 7 years between 2008-2015. When I started, cheeseburgers were $1.95, happy meals were $4.95, Big Macs were $4.95, quarter pounders were $4.95.
Every so often I'd come to work and everything was 5-10c more. And I remember when they made the buns smaller too - that also came with a price increase that was sold as the meat to bun ratio and therefore the burger being better all around.
I remember when I was younger kfc seemed a bit rich and maccas was the affordable takeaway. Now is it just me or have kfc barely increased prices while McDonald’s has gone whole hog jump into another bracket?
Maccas isn’t worth what they’re asking at all, and kfc suddenly seems to hold better value (cabbage excluded).
I have no idea why McDonalds is so popular. It is garbage food sold at independent cafe prices. On paper it should be an abandoned wasteland with no one interested in what they offer. Imagine this: some kid grows up in the bush and has never been exposed to McD's, they go to the city and try it as a young adult... what would they think of it?
I saw a comedian who said Maccas is for kids and drunk people. Sure, I accept the 2am Maccas indulgence. But walk past any McDonalds at any time during the day and it is packed.
I don't know if anyone noticed, but McDonald's significantly increased the price of nearly all their menu items during the height of the first lockdowns to cash in on the new-found wealth thanks to jobseeker payments from the government, as well as shrinking a few product packages as well.
They don't have anything new and the only desire to return to them is when the Grand Big Mac promotion comes round or the occasional ice cream if the machine is working.
I don't know how they are so popular, you wouldn't get change from a $50 with a family of 4 just about.

I've never been a fan of the chicken items apart from nuggest at Maccas. They have super cheap breading and are tasteless. Quarter pounder is still nb and maccas is just a convenience thing. Often open 24 hours and more accessable. I would say if you can get a bahn mi or cheap chinese it is hard to beat
There’s something about a quarter pounder that is like crack to me. I know people say maccas is gross but if I had no regard for my health I would genuinely eat 5 and enjoy it.

Only reason quarter pounder is still good is that the meat patty has to stay the same size because it's a quarter of a pound of meat. If you go back, you'll notice that the bun used to fit the patty. Since they couldnt reduce the amount of meat, they just reduced the amount of everything else so the meat sticks out.
Just because it's called a quarter pounder doesn't mean they need to give you a quarter pound of meat. Just ask subway.

Everyone reaches an age where it just starts to taste like absolute shit, especially the fries and coke. Also, big macs are tiny now!! They're a couple of mouthfuls at best, and the cost of a meal deal is the same as a subway or local burger place. Basically, Maccas meals are small, horrid tasting, and terrible value. The opposite of what they're supposed to be.
I had a steak sandwich with a side of chips for $12 at the pub yesterday. Plus $4 for a lemon, lime & bitters. Much much better value than maccas.

Hahaha. The first two times i had KFC in my life were the nights of my first holy communion and my confirmation. Those were apparently special enough days that I got my request for KFC granted. I couldn’t even get it on my birthday!

Used to be something people went to after church as a treat around my area. It was more expensive than maccas but still cheaper than most restaurants and definitely quicker.
U/Nipps01 is right it was more of a family treat or like a few buckets of chicken and coleslaw for party catering. They were few and far between too. They didn't really market on meals for one until the late 90s. Their first attempt at change that I recall was to do roast chicken for a bit to try to take business from Red Rooster. Then they focused on selling to drunks at 2am in the city centre and then low income communities.

Agree 100%. Bought maccas just yesterday for 4 people and it cost $53. I can feed the same 4 people from a fish n chips shop for just under $30.

If we buy a family box 4 or 6 burgers it costs something $30-$40. It feeds four of us with no left overs. A local pizza place does 2 large pizzas with drink and garlic bread for the price of the two pizzas (about $33) 1 pizza is enough for all of us and we would have an entire pizza the following night. But now if I cook up spaghetti sauce 1kg mince etc without doing too much calculations I'd estimate it'd cost $20 and we would get 2-3 meals. Oh and parmi around here is about $28 a pop. It's all bloody expensive now, we try our hardest to make all meals, but some days we get too busy and go the pizza.
Surely 2 of your family members are very small children if one pizza feeds four of you? Or you all have abnormally small appetites.

I eat Thai food all the time (wife is Thai), and for 2 adults and 2 kids we’d rarely get away for under $100. Thai is like one, if not the most expensive take away Asian food. I don’t know how you’re getting away for $40

The fillet of fish shrank to almost half of the size from when I was a teen. It’s sad because I’d gladly pay more if inflation was hitting it, but I didn’t want the burger to shrink. It just makes me feel cheated.
Still plenty of people who don’t eat beef or chicken, I’m not one of those but I do love a fish burger every so often. :)

As a teenager I went entire shifts without selling one. For days at a time the only reason I’d make them was because the they’d timed out of the production bin. Strangely they were never on the ‘loss’ reports (nuggets were always..misplaced the most)

My mum is almost infamous amongst our close friends for her maccas order of a medium fillet o fish and a Diet Coke. Another friend has this year long running prank going with leaving a fillet o fish for a friend in more and more obscure places (like calling it into his work over the woolies intercom)

Last time I got it with my dad was probably 5 years ago and it was about 50 bucks for the two of us. And fish and chips is so hit or miss. Sometimes everything will be light and crispy, sometimes it's all soggy and stodgy. Always costs a lot.

I worked at Maccas for 7 years between 2008-2015. When I started, cheeseburgers were $1.95, happy meals were $4.95, Big Macs were $4.95, quarter pounders were $4.95. Every so often I'd come to work and everything was 5-10c more. And I remember when they made the buns smaller too - that also came with a price increase that was sold as the meat to bun ratio and therefore the burger being better all around.
So you would have rode the Chicken and Cheese wave. $2 when it came out, it's like $4.50 now... wtf

I remember when I was younger kfc seemed a bit rich and maccas was the affordable takeaway. Now is it just me or have kfc barely increased prices while McDonald’s has gone whole hog jump into another bracket? Maccas isn’t worth what they’re asking at all, and kfc suddenly seems to hold better value (cabbage excluded).
I have no idea why McDonalds is so popular. It is garbage food sold at independent cafe prices. On paper it should be an abandoned wasteland with no one interested in what they offer. Imagine this: some kid grows up in the bush and has never been exposed to McD's, they go to the city and try it as a young adult... what would they think of it?

I don't know if anyone noticed, but McDonald's significantly increased the price of nearly all their menu items during the height of the first lockdowns to cash in on the new-found wealth thanks to jobseeker payments from the government, as well as shrinking a few product packages as well. They don't have anything new and the only desire to return to them is when the Grand Big Mac promotion comes round or the occasional ice cream if the machine is working. I don't know how they are so popular, you wouldn't get change from a $50 with a family of 4 just about.
