The main character?
What, why? I think he looks like a 'normal' kid. Quiet, polite. Just curious of why you think he's autistic.
But yeah, no matter what, he's awesome
It’s been awhile since I’ve watched but I remember thinking the same, mostly because he is seemingly unaware in most social scenarios and gets very obviously taken advantage of by reigen which are both very common autistic traits/experiences.
I recall him also having a flat tone and facial expression which are also autistic traits.
The show is basically about him struggling with social interactions and getting pushed around until he reaches 100% and has what could be called a 'meltdown'. Seems like a pretty straightforward allegory to me.
No honestly I don’t think he is. Mob suppresses his emotions. It’s not that he doesn’t know how to express it. Yes he’s socially awkward but that also does not make him autistic.
>Mob suppresses his emotions.
Basically how I acted when I was masking a lot more, I would appear muted, robotic.
By the end of the series he is more open and more okay with his quirks
The entire Strawhat crew from One Piece
Tsuyu, Midoriya, and Shigaraki from BNHA
L from Death Note
Princess Syalis from Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle
Karamatsu and Jyushimatsu from Osomatsu-San
There's more, but these are the only ones I can think of right now
Edit:
Kusuo from The Disastrous Life of Saiki K
Tomoko Kuroki From Watamote
Haruhi from OHSHC
There’s a death note short story that talks about L’s daily routine and some of his childhood, I done remember what it’s called but I’m sure you’ll find it if you search up “Death note one-shot”
Osomatsu-san mention let's gooo!!! It's one of my special interests I've had for like 6 years and not many people know about it. Madoka magica and vocaloid are also my special interests
Me too! Kara is also my favorite, I have an ita bag and I was able to cosplay him for my local anime con earlier this year! I've been into that anime since highschool, I love it so much!
Jotaro Kujo from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. The biggest thing comes from his official character description, which states: "Jotaro doesn't think it's necessary to deliberately show emotions. He assumes that anyone can tell what he's feeling just by looking at him. Sometimes it causes misunderstandings between people. People often think he is cold and rebellious, and doesn't care about anything."
It seems pretty clear to me that through each part he appears that he cares very deeply for his friends and family, but he has trouble verbalizing his feelings. He shows how much he cares through his actions and sacrifices, and in part 4 the duwang gang looks up to him for his kindness and calming presence, even if he's difficult to talk to and kinda intimidating at first.
He wears the same outfit obsessively to the point he gets it completely remade while on a time sensitive and treacherous journey just so he doesn't have to wear anything else. And he wears it in the middle of the desert, too. He always wears his hat, even inside. There was something in part 6 about the two things he would always remember, no matter what: his daughter and his hat.
He was based on Clint Eastwood characters like the Man With No Name, so my headcanon is that he copied some of how he acts from movies.
In part 4 he's much calmer, but given Koichi's complaints about trying to start a conversation with him, Jotaro did not get much better at socializing, and is still incapable of/really hates making small talk.
Imo Haruhi is rather apathetic about the stuff that she's "supposed to be" impressed by. I also feel like her not caring about how others perceive her appearance could also be a trait. Including her apathy about her gender presentation
I'll add one - sometimes she refuses to wear costumes that don't match the season. That's something my sibling would do to a T, whereas I only dress based on sensitivities for the day.
Also bring in the whole "clueless until masking" bit of when she first becomes a Host; her routine is only interrupted by life changing events (anime, haven't read the manga) like breakfast when her mom passed and when the Host Club was going to declare dissolution; her very nonchalant attitude about going her own way fashion wise; her need for a quiet study hall; her easy ability to tell Hikaru and Kauru apart (when you study mannerisms to mask, you often become hypersensitive); falling easily into the same habits with Tamaki that she had with her dad (shopping buddy); the fact she has a (purposefully) more monotone voice than the rest of the cast outside of Kyoya and Mori (contrasted by Honey's younger brother who forces monotone); and 90% of the date episode with Hikaru (and I'll throw in her response to Hikaru's tantrum with that one).
Ok so maybe more than just one. I hadn't realized how many things low key coded Haruhi as Autistic. No wonder it was a comfort show for so long...
I thought of Komi immediately, & knowing that Japan is still incorporating Western language into their cultural understanding regarding autism, it feels like Komi (& her dad) exhibits many autistic traits that have been given other names & labels.
Off the top of my head I can think of: Lain from "Serial Experiments Lain", the three main girls from "Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!" Shizuku from Hunter x Hunter, Komi from "Komi Can't Communicate", Rei from "Evangelion" and Rachel Gardner from "Angels of Death"!
Not adapted into the anime yet but in the manga for Chainsaw Man, there’s a character by the named Asa Mitaka that acts typically autistic (Awkward fidgeting, info dumping for special interests, tends to overthink but has a hard time communicating)
L, Near, and maybe Mello from Death Note
Philip from Kamen Rider W and Fuuto PI (technically only the latter is an anime, the former is a tokusatsu show)
Three come to mind for me: Midori Asakusa from Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, Frieren from Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, and Ryo Yamada from Bocchi the Rock
Shun Kaidou from Saiki K. (yeah, I know that loads of ppl hc Saiki as autistic; it's nothing bad in it but I can't see it in him...but in Kaidou's case it's clear as a day for me *no wonder I relate to him...*)
I think there's good potential for an autistic reading of
Goku from dragonball
Luffy from one piece
Most of the straw hats really
Naruto from Naruto
Sai to the point of him maybe being actually intentionally autistic representation.
Midoriya from my hero academia. Tsuyu maybe
Izzy from digimon. Maybe TK from digimon. Henry from digimon tamers.
Mob from mob psycho from what I understand might well have been intentional but honestly I haven't seen mob psycho. I should.
Main character from Ranking of Kings might be the only fully nonverbal representation. I've only seen four episodes though (I've been meaning to, just haven't had time).
If your shounen protagonist isn’t ND, I feel like you’re doing something wrong at this point.
Goku is a triple threat. Traumatic brain injury, semi-feral childhood, and what my partner and I have dubbed “space autism”. All Saiyans have space autism. It defines them as a species.
Also, I can definitely recommend Mob Psycho. It’s hilarious and really touching too. I love how the psychic powers work too. He just gets so overwhelmed and then whatever thought is left in his brain at that point manifests itself.
YES! also she struggles in school but is fluent in morse code. And when what she needs to learn is somehow connected to spies suddenly she can understand it. Also she gets overstimulated by too many thoughts in crowded places.
Edit: I've observed that both Yor and Loid also show some traits of autism but it's been a while, i cant name em right now
Yor 100%. She's *awful* at reading others outside of her job when she falls into a mask. Otherwise she's completely socially clueless past socially awkward. So much so that Yuri changes his entire personality around her pretty much. Her mother's soup having to be perfect? Cutting through the cutting board and being yelled at *to just be normal?* Her inability to see the dragon around the sweet of her friend? Camilla calling her "robotic" ring any bells? I'll toss in the "Not knowing how serious or not it was for Anya to have her gym clothes, and then failing to even give them to the front office," pointing to black and white thinking. Also absolutely certain she had to be married, took that completely literally. She also displays a strong sense of justice with protecting her loved ones. Oh tons of future thinking anxiety! Finally, her special interests revolve around physical stunts, anatomy for assassination, and caring for her family to the point of Autism hyperfocus.
Bonus round! Yor also has ADHD! Terrible at keeping track of what should be in food, bad at time management for food, rejection sensitivity around Anya, ...rejection sensitivity period, being able to something extremely well or not at all, easily distracted by dogs, spacing out when preparing tea or at work, spacing out to think of how to kill everyone to ensure Anya gets ahead, losing track of Anya decently often, and I'll even add just casually accepting Lloyd getting too many drinks at the Penguin Park (I'd totally lose my drinks everywhere).
So yeah, Yor is AuDHD.
I know this months late but please please infodump because not enough people talk about this and I literally screamed in my brain upon seeing this comment.
I’ve always considered Midoriya and and Todoroki from My Hero Academia as autistic. Midoriya seems to have a special interest in All Might and other heroes and also mumbles all the time about them. Todoroki takes things super literally and has a difficult time being around others.
I also feel that Takina from Lycoris Recoil is autistic. She tends to think differently from everyone else and kind of shows the non-energetic side of autistic people. She also despises change, from when she’s initially relocated to LycoReco to back to the agency. Additionally, Takina tends to wear clothes she feels comfortable in rather than what others are wearing, given how she wears men’s underwear rather than women’s like what a neurotypical would do. I also see Chisato being ADHD given just how much energy she has and how she can’t sit to stand still for the life of her, especially around Takina.
Can also see Gojo from My Dress Up Darling as autistic. He can’t interact with others for the life of him and is completely terrified of going outside the rules (AKA touching Marin, watching her dress, etc.). He also wears the same outfits all the time and feels super uncomfortable wearing something different.
I also can see Megumin from Konosuba being on the spectrum too. She’s absolutely obsessed with explosions and it’s the only attack she’s willing to learn. Every morning she practices explosions no matter what weather or event is occurring.
Yui - K-On!
Yua Serufu - Do-It-Yourself!
Akko and/or literally everyone in the cast of Little Witch Academia
Suletta Mercury - G-Witch
Ernesti Echevalier - Knights & Magic
Suzu - Belle (the masking goes hard in this one but its been a while since ive seen the movie)
I feel kinda feel like most main characters in in the CGDCT genre are probably on the spectrum somewhat.
That could be the case! I think that's what the narrative is trying to show. But I think there's a reasonable case to be made for autism. Specifically in his reliance on rituals, his odd speech, and his intense interest in his show he watches. There's other things but I can't think of them.
if there were any characters i think might have it, it would be:
* Hitori “Bocchi” Gotou - Bocchi the Rock!
* Ryo Yamada - Bocchi the Rock!
* Komi Shouko - Komi Can’t Communicate
* L - Death Note
(also do “anime games” count?)
* Futaba Sakura - Persona 5
* Yusuke Kitagawa - Persona 5
* Hikari - Persona Q2
obviously none are confirmed, (and there are more i forgot to mention) but I still think they’re autistic-coded as I can relate to these characters the most.
Jotaro and (possibly) giorno from JJBA
Shigeo from mob psycho
rengoku (and probably more i havent seen past the movie) from demon slayer
Loid and anya from spyxfamily (though it just be loid’s spy training)
I don't know why I get Autistic vibes from Gohan, but him and Dr. Gero both. (Nobody said that Autistic characters had to be good guys. Gohan is definitely a good guy, but Dr. Gero just has something Musk-ish or Bezos-ish, about him, but to a crazy evil degree... (Plus he's a technological innovator.))
Lowkey Akane Tsunemori from Psycho pass since she is able to reject the sybil system and is also working on her own group of nutjobs against the system as well lol
shichika from katanagatari. he's a himbo but i feel like it's easy to read his lack of social understanding and gullible nature and willing to follow togame because she said he will be for autistic traits.
like half the haikyuu characters and i’m so serious.
kageyama tobio and kita shinsuke for sure (special interests, stimming, differences in social interaction, sensory processing issues, routine following, etc.)
but there are so many others. honestly it would be easier compiling a list of main characters who ARENT neurodivergent (bcuz the ones who aren’t autistic r often adhd anyway)
The three children (Shinji, Rei, and Asuka) of Neon Genesis Evangelion and Lain from Serial Experiments Lain.
While I know this is an Anime-esque American cartoon, I’ll also throw in Huey Freeman from the Boondocks.
Legoshi from Beastars for sure. Also, maybe a controversial one, but possibly Tomoko from Watamote.
Can't say I watch anime too much anymore, so I don't know too many others off the top of my head
There is a lack of people talking about shojo and josei titles here, so here is my list ignoring the existence of shonen since everyone has already said all of those:
All 4 main characters from Wotakoi
Moriko from Recovery of an MMO Junkie
Yamada from Loving Yamada-kun at Lv999
Himuro and Fuyutsuki from The Ice Guy and the Cool Girl (I think the anime title calls her "his Cool Female Colleague" but the manga translates the title better so that's what I'm going to call it)
All of the guys from Play it Cool, Guys
Shirosaki from My New Boss is Goofy
Every single character in Princess Jellyfish
yesss I just started watching my new boss is goofy and every time Momose wonders how Shirosaki could be so competent yet so -ahem- goofy, I want to yell ‘because he’s autistic!!’
Ghiaccio from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure mainly because I relate to him to some extent. We both can’t make sense of certain phrases and end up understanding them literally. And we also have trouble regulating our emotions.
Mika and Freminet from Genshin Impact but mostly Freminet :D
Please don't start attacking me- the characters haven't been clarified (to my knowledge anyway) yo either have or have not autism I just THINK they might :,)
NOZAKI FROM GSNK!!! I'm not sure whether Akechi from saiki k fits the adhd or autism better, maybe even audhd. There are a few more but I can't recall them.
Ayumi from Charlotte.
She's eating the family pizza sauce every day, she's got an obsession with Yusa and her band, and an interest in astronomy. She got her routines, like the whole houshold has to eat together and most of her sentences she finishes with なのです (nano desu), which is a very unique speech pattern.
It's also hinted in the beginning that the main character and Ayumis older brother is masking his autism.
I also have the theory that the whole main cast, aka everybody with a special abilty is supposedly autistic, since besides the "special abilty" they all got some kind of special interest, they have to hide their abilities (masking) and can only be their true selves around other people with special abilities.
Also the abilities to be considered an illness which predominantly occurs in puberty and wears off (masking) in adulthood seems to point in that direction.
Just a theory, but it fits quite well in my head.
I don't specifically headcanon her as autistic but I could see Nico Robin from One Piece being autistic. There's really not enough to say one way or the other though because she's got a ton of trauma from an early age that could explain all of it. But there's just little things here and there that make me think "yeah, I could see that".
On the other hand, Maomao from The Apothecary Diaries is one I'm more comfortable headcanoning as autistic.
Orihime from Bleach. Def shows signs of being on the spectrum (at least the Anime).
Edit: Also while not classed as “Anime”, Gadget from Chip-n-Dale ticks enough on the list, even if ASD wasn’t a diagnosis then.
And Japan now acknowledges hikikomori as an social issue, and the majority of those are probably on the spectrum. They’ve also added mental disability as a recognized disability in addition to physical and intellectual disability, although you do need to get recertified every 2 years.
Why do you think most hikikomori are on the spectrum?
I wouldn't make such baseless claims, although I see the reasoning.
Based on what you said it seems to imply that they have "just" added mental disability as a form of recognized disability which amounts to saying that until then they didn't recognize it as such.
In japan, because of its strict social rules, life for people with autism is harder (based on what I've heard online). Also from what I've heard online, Japanese culture is less accepting of autism in general compared to other cultures.
Hikikomori is equivalent to autistic burnout. The whole education system lends to it (as opposed to the US DoE policy of accommodation, flawed as it may be). Last I checked (and certainly when I was in school there) there was no skipping grade, no special Ed, everyone your age went to the the same grade, and in order to get a good job, you had to go to a good college, which in turn required you to enter a good high school, which meant most likely you went to Jyuku or did bunch of extracurricular activities even at elementary school level.
Just look up “Asian parenting”, apply that to how ASD would end up being burned out, and there’s your answer.
https://www.nippon.com/en/currents/d00133/
(Disability and in particular mental disability was always a taboo subject in Japan)
That's not what I meant tho. I meant that indeed japan is not the best towards autistic people however hikikomori could mainly be just normal people whose personalities are not compatible with the Japanese culture, or people with other mental disabilities/illnesses, I have not seen a study for the reasons people are hikikomori so idk. If you want there are most likely a lot of studies about this, you can probably check them out and reply back with your findings if you want.
> Hikikomori is similar to the social withdrawal exhibited by some people with autism spectrum disorder. This has led some psychiatrists to suggest that hikikomori may be affected by autism spectrum disorder and other disorders that affect social integration, but that their disorders are altered from their typical Western presentation because of Japanese sociocultural pressures.[27]

Erica Hartmann from Strike Witches — she has meltdowns almost every episode she’s featured in. Especially if she’s alone in her shared room with Gertrud (who totally has unchecked ADHD).
I don’t know much about anime tbh. Since Danganronpa has an anime adaptation (except for v3, too bad, bc I think Gonta, Tsumugi, Himiko and Angie are all autistic D:),, hmm.. I’d say Makoto because I kin him a lot, hehe. Jataro, maybe?
Chiaki and Mikan, specially!!
Danganronpa is a bit hard to tell because the whole premise is that you’ve got a bunch of autistic savants entering this killing contest, but the underlying actual PC is a “normal” person witch no such ability. So whatever VR/brain-interface that is being used alters the characters’ ability as well as their personality, and the “reality” that they experience is nothing more than a facade.
Anime characters I think are autistic:
* Chii (Chobits)
* Primula, Nerine and Kaede (Shuffle)
* Nagisa Furukawa (Clannad)
* Tsukasa Hiigari (Lucky Star)
* L and Misa Amane (Death Note)
* Aoi Sakuraba (Bluer than Indigo (Ai Yori Aoshi)
* Kikyo and Sesshomaru (InuYasha)
* Sugar, Pepper, and maybe Saga (A Little Snow Fairy Sugar)
* maybe Blossom/Momoko (Powerpuff Girls Z)
* Nagisa Aoi, Kagome Byakudan, and Chiyo Tsukidate (Strawberry Panic)
* Ichika and Manatsu (Uta Kata)
I’ll list more later and these are characters from anime I watched in the past
suletta mercury (gwitch), umika konohoshi (stardust telepath), rae taylor (wataoshi), muichiro tokito (demon slayer), the main characters of spy x family, among others
edit: oh also shoko komi
Hime Goto from Kakushigoto. The main plot of the show is that her dad "Kakushi Goto" writes dirty manga, but doesn't want Hime to know. She only finds out when she turns 18.
There were a lot of times in the show where she completely misunderstood something. [Take this scene from episode 1 for example](https://youtu.be/29QZXu6zgQY?si=GiHbGcQ0mFWgihR3&t=475) (7:55 for mobile)
There is a moment in the show where she sees her father at a booth signing manga, but she does not recognize him and goes off to look for him. They assume that she just didn't recognize him in his mangaka outfit, but I think it makes more sense if she actively avoids making eye contact.
Genshin technically isn't anime, but the artstyle is so I'm gonna answer with one I'm very convinced of: Sanganomiya Kokomi
Playing through her story quest yesterday, I noticed at least 9 autistic features that I recognised lol
What about Bennett, Mika, Albedo, Cyno, Freminet, Kaveh, and Xiao?
I realize I'm practically listing every young male character, but seriously. Cyno and Freminet are damn near walking billboards screaming "autist" imo.
Cyno makes puns because he knows humor is a good way to make friends with people, so he keeps making them. He is absolutely hyper–fixated on Genius Invocation, and struggles to find anything else in common with people.
Freminet loves diving to an absurd degree, and finds nobody else would have any interest in talking to him unless it's to exploit his skill/interest for their own gain.
Albedo is Albedo, I don't think I need to explain why I consider him autistic.
Bennett is...interesting. He's just as obsessed with adventuring as Cyno is with Genius Invocation. He's rather socially naive, only really has a friend in Razor. He considers even people that clearly don't want him around to be friends or nice people, and holds out hope they'll come adventure with him again sometime.
Mika doesn't like large crowds, they make him uncomfortable. He doesn't seem to like loud environments either. His primary interest is cartography. He doesn't like being a center of attention. He's rather shy and introverted, but very dedicated to his passion. All of which is well suited to his role as a scout.
Kaveh is so easily distracted with helping others, it often runs in direct contradiction to whatever his immediate goal is. He is completely unconcerned with social conventions that he often runs afoul of while being distracted with helping others (usually being late to or completely missing a planned meeting).
Xiao is very black and white with his morality, like many autists. He is incredibly blunt with his words, and doesn't care for social conventions that dictate when to be polite for the sake of another's feelings.
Every single one of the above is socially awkward, shows a hyperfixation, is rather black and white with morality (except Bennett), seems to mask around other people, and has difficulty making real friends.
I want to add Razor and Gorou to this list, but can't really justify it. Razor was never taught to live among people in the first place. While Gorou doesn't really show many signs of autism other than his tendencies to downplay everything he does as nothing special, try to be of use to others, and generally put others before himself at every opportunity because he doesn't see his own needs as important by comparison (like when he wants alone time and can't get it because all of his subordinates want him around). I've heard others suggest Kaeya and Diluc as well, but I don't see it.
Out of the whole MHA cast, I’ve heard arguments for every character, but my favorite ones are Tsuyu and Toga. For Tsuyu it makes sense unless you blame it all on her “frog” quirk and it makes sense for Toga, but more in a metaphorical way. I think her story of her quirk could be an allusion to a lot of things but autism is a good theory
Shino Aburame from Naruto.
Could have had some more character depth, but I love his sense of justice, unyielding loyalty to those who earned it, analytical talent, and unfiltered honesty.
His special interest that might be considered weird by others, and almost always wearing sunglasses and a hoodie over his ears are just icing on the cake.
Izuku Midoriya \o/
Never have I ever related to a character as much as I relate to him. I don’t know if that necessarily means he’s AuDHD like me, but it certainly means I headcanon him as such.
Nanami Kento. This one is, in part, personal bias, but the fact that he runs through what is considered proper conduct when he first meets Yuuji, has flat affect, is a creature of habit, is principled, etc. brings me much joy.
Most really dense romance anime main characters
Like in the chivalry of a failed knight he doesn't pick up on romantic social cues
eg
Gf: I want to learn sword art with you
Him:but me teaching you will only make your technique worse
Gf: *look of confusion*
Oh and he hyper fixates on memorizing everything about his next opponent and his hobby is swordsmanship
Considering he was the abandoned and neglected child they never got him tested
Shigeo ‘Mob’ Kageyama from Mob Psycho 100
This is the correct answer
this is what I was going to say lol
The main character? What, why? I think he looks like a 'normal' kid. Quiet, polite. Just curious of why you think he's autistic. But yeah, no matter what, he's awesome

The entire Strawhat crew from One Piece Tsuyu, Midoriya, and Shigaraki from BNHA L from Death Note Princess Syalis from Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle Karamatsu and Jyushimatsu from Osomatsu-San There's more, but these are the only ones I can think of right now Edit: Kusuo from The Disastrous Life of Saiki K Tomoko Kuroki From Watamote Haruhi from OHSHC
L is canonically autistic :)
I LOVE THAT, where did you hear about this? I would love to share it with my friends
There’s a death note short story that talks about L’s daily routine and some of his childhood, I done remember what it’s called but I’m sure you’ll find it if you search up “Death note one-shot”
Why Tsuyu?
Raptor hands and word repetition Also, I just get vibes from her
shes so me fr which is uhhh exactly why she’s autistic :3c
Shigaraki 100% has autism LOL. I also think Iida, Shouto, Endeavor, Mei Hatsume, Tamaki Amajiki, and Nejire Hado have it as well.
So many BNHA characters are autistic so I had to just keep the list short 🤣
So true 😂
Osomatsu-san mention let's gooo!!! It's one of my special interests I've had for like 6 years and not many people know about it. Madoka magica and vocaloid are also my special interests
I love Osomatsu-San Karamatsu is my absolute favorite 😍 I'm absolutely a Karamatsu girl!
I love this and is my new headcanon
Finally someone said it!
Love this response! A buddy and I have a headcanon that Jonathan is autistic--a lotta the Jojo folks lend themselves well to it.
Hitori “Bocchi” Gotoh
L & Near from Death Note, Haruhi Fujioka from Ouran High School Host Club
Why Haruhi?
Imo Haruhi is rather apathetic about the stuff that she's "supposed to be" impressed by. I also feel like her not caring about how others perceive her appearance could also be a trait. Including her apathy about her gender presentation
Huh! I’d always just figured she really laid back. I always wanted to be like that 😅
I'll add one - sometimes she refuses to wear costumes that don't match the season.
Bocchi and Komi possibly.
YES LAIN
Hange Zoe from AOT
i love hange
YES finally someone who agrees with me!

The armchair psychiatrist in me is telling me Denji def suffering PTSD or depression but I don’t think he’s on the spectrum

L from Death Note, but I think they made that obvious.
Frieren is just like me frfrfr
Nanami from Jujutsu Kaisen seems pretty on the nose with how he sees and doesn't relate to the world.
L, Near, and maybe Mello from Death Note Philip from Kamen Rider W and Fuuto PI (technically only the latter is an anime, the former is a tokusatsu show)
I know this might seem really basic or stereotyped for me to say this but Hange Zoe from Attack On Titan? Idk anymore, correct me if I’m wrong.
This must be the work of the dark reunion!
THANK YOU
100% Kaidou.
Lain from serial experiments lain.
Shoto Todoroki 100% lol "If i smile, they die?" Kusuo Saiki as well imo
I don't watch a lot of Anime, but I feel like L from Death Note has autism.
I think there's good potential for an autistic reading of Goku from dragonball Luffy from one piece Most of the straw hats really Naruto from Naruto Sai to the point of him maybe being actually intentionally autistic representation. Midoriya from my hero academia. Tsuyu maybe Izzy from digimon.

I like this! And the telepathic abilities are kind of like sensory sensitivities in my mind. There's also her special interest in Bondman...
YES! also she struggles in school but is fluent in morse code.
I was literally just going to say Anya
I never thought about that before, but I think you're on to something.
I definitely agree. And her powers are a good analogy to sensory overload as well.
Haruka Nanase from Free, and I'm suppressing the urge to infodump right now.
Clocked Takina and Chisato the same way.
Yui - K-On! Yua Serufu - Do-It-Yourself! Akko and/or literally everyone in the cast of Little Witch Academia Suletta Mercury - G-Witch Ernesti Echevalier - Knights & Magic Suzu - Belle (the masking goes hard in this one but its been a while since ive seen the movie) I feel kinda feel like most main characters in in the CGDCT genre are probably on the spectrum somewhat.
omg Yua Serufu, I love her! didn't expect to see her here lol
Kotaro from Kotaro lives alone comes to mind!
I always thought of him as just a child with massive trauma that was forced to grow up
That could be the case! I think that's what the narrative is trying to show. But I think there's a reasonable case to be made for autism. Specifically in his reliance on rituals, his odd speech, and his intense interest in his show he watches. There's other things but I can't think of them.
Ye, I can see that. I just interpreted that as his form to cope
Vash the Stampede
Inspector Lunge from Monster
Frieren, and Mafuyu from Given.
I feel like Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion is one
if there were any characters i think might have it, it would be: * Hitori “Bocchi” Gotou - Bocchi the Rock! * Ryo Yamada - Bocchi the Rock! * Komi Shouko - Komi Can’t Communicate * L - Death Note (also do “anime games” count?) * Futaba Sakura - Persona 5 * Yusuke Kitagawa - Persona 5 * Hikari - Persona Q2 obviously none are confirmed, (and there are more i forgot to mention) but I still think they’re autistic-coded as I can relate to these characters the most.
Ame from Wolf Children
Jotaro and (possibly) giorno from JJBA Shigeo from mob psycho rengoku (and probably more i havent seen past the movie) from demon slayer Loid and anya from spyxfamily (though it just be loid’s spy training)
Lowkey Akane Tsunemori from Psycho pass since she is able to reject the sybil system and is also working on her own group of nutjobs against the system as well lol
izuku midorya 100%
Osaka
Todoroki shouto and izuku midoriya from mha
I like the idea of Deku being autistic but I think Todoroki acts the way he does because he’s traumatized not autistic
I agree with Izuku, nobody will ever convince me heroes and quirks in particular are not his primary special interest.
Pikachu from Pokémon probably has severe autism because he talks by saying his name.

My favorite anime
shichika from katanagatari. he's a himbo but i feel like it's easy to read his lack of social understanding and gullible nature and willing to follow togame because she said he will be for autistic traits.
Frieren
Itachi Uchiha, from Naruto Neku Sakuraba, from The World Ends With You
The only one i can think of is L from Death Note but at the same time hes a savant stereotype :/
Sailor Mercury.
Muichiro Tokito from Demon Slayer.
like half the haikyuu characters and i’m so serious. kageyama tobio and kita shinsuke for sure (special interests, stimming, differences in social interaction, sensory processing issues, routine following, etc.)
but there are so many others. honestly it would be easier compiling a list of main characters who ARENT neurodivergent (bcuz the ones who aren’t autistic r often adhd anyway)
The three children (Shinji, Rei, and Asuka) of Neon Genesis Evangelion and Lain from Serial Experiments Lain. While I know this is an Anime-esque American cartoon, I’ll also throw in Huey Freeman from the Boondocks.
Tsukishima Kei Haikyuu
Most of them lol. But seriously, L from Death Note
Legoshi from Beastars for sure. Also, maybe a controversial one, but possibly Tomoko from Watamote. Can't say I watch anime too much anymore, so I don't know too many others off the top of my head
There is a lack of people talking about shojo and josei titles here, so here is my list ignoring the existence of shonen since everyone has already said all of those: All 4 main characters from Wotakoi Moriko from Recovery of an MMO Junkie Yamada from Loving Yamada-kun at Lv999 Himuro and Fuyutsuki from The Ice Guy and the Cool Girl (I think the anime title calls her "his Cool Female Colleague" but the manga translates the title better so that's what I'm going to call it) All of the guys from Play it Cool, Guys Shirosaki from My New Boss is Goofy Every single character in Princess Jellyfish
yesss I just started watching my new boss is goofy and every time Momose wonders how Shirosaki could be so competent yet so -ahem- goofy, I want to yell ‘because he’s autistic!!’
He’s a wolf but Legoshi from Beastars, Saiki, Kaido(also from Saiki) Nendo, Rikka Takanashi, Nezuko, Inosuke, Luffy, Gon Freecss
every single nichijou character
NICHIJOU!!!!!
The Professor is so autistic, I love her
Ghiaccio from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure mainly because I relate to him to some extent. We both can’t make sense of certain phrases and end up understanding them literally. And we also have trouble regulating our emotions.
Komi-komi cant communicate
Mika and Freminet from Genshin Impact but mostly Freminet :D Please don't start attacking me- the characters haven't been clarified (to my knowledge anyway) yo either have or have not autism I just THINK they might :,)
So I'm not alone in thinking that those two have it.
ranpo from bungou stray dogs
I love him so much ❤️
Kotomi and/or Nagisa from Clannad
Ranpo Edogawa, Bungou Stray Dogs
I love Ranpo. He is so cool and funny ❤️
Maomao from Apothecary Diaries 😍
Most of the pirates in one piece
NOZAKI FROM GSNK!!! I'm not sure whether Akechi from saiki k fits the adhd or autism better, maybe even audhd. There are a few more but I can't recall them.
All of em
All of them.
To many, I don’t think I could name every single one i head-canon
L from Death Note Saiki Kusuo
L and near
Yuki Yoshikawa from horimya
I don't specifically headcanon her as autistic but I could see Nico Robin from One Piece being autistic. There's really not enough to say one way or the other though because she's got a ton of trauma from an early age that could explain all of it. But there's just little things here and there that make me think "yeah, I could see that". On the other hand, Maomao from The Apothecary Diaries is one I'm more comfortable headcanoning as autistic.
Most protagonists. And if not the protagonist, the love interest
Orihime from Bleach. Def shows signs of being on the spectrum (at least the Anime). Edit: Also while not classed as “Anime”, Gadget from Chip-n-Dale ticks enough on the list, even if ASD wasn’t a diagnosis then.
me
My head cannon is Goblin Slayer.

There are some canonical autistic characters in anime and a lot who are implied to be. What you are saying is an overgeneralization.
Just look up “Asian parenting”, apply that to how ASD would end up being burned out, and there’s your answer. https://www.nippon.com/en/currents/d00133/ (Disability and in particular mental disability was always a taboo subject in Japan)
This has led some psychiatrists to suggest that hikikomori may be affected by autism spectrum disorder and other disorders that affect social integration, but that their disorders are altered from their typical Western presentation because of Japanese sociocultural pressures.[27] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hikikomori
But where is the data?

Yuji Itadori
Byakuya togami from Danganronpa
Erica Hartmann from Strike Witches — she has meltdowns almost every episode she’s featured in. Especially if she’s alone in her shared room with Gertrud (who totally has unchecked ADHD).
Saiki K.
At least two of the characters from Persona 5, if anime'd out video games can count.
Anime characters I think are autistic: * Chii (Chobits) * Primula, Nerine and Kaede (Shuffle) * Nagisa Furukawa (Clannad) * Tsukasa Hiigari (Lucky Star) * L and Misa Amane (Death Note) * Aoi Sakuraba (Bluer than Indigo (Ai Yori Aoshi) * Kikyo and Sesshomaru (InuYasha) * Sugar, Pepper, and maybe Saga (A Little Snow Fairy Sugar) * maybe Blossom/Momoko (Powerpuff Girls Z) * Nagisa Aoi, Kagome Byakudan, and Chiyo Tsukidate (Strawberry Panic) * Ichika and Manatsu (Uta Kata) I’ll list more later and these are characters from anime I watched in the past

Kenma Kozume, I wouldn't say it's impossible by any means.
suletta mercury (gwitch), umika konohoshi (stardust telepath), rae taylor (wataoshi), muichiro tokito (demon slayer), the main characters of spy x family, among others edit: oh also shoko komi
Maybe Rei Kiriyama from March comes in like a Lion?
Hime Goto from Kakushigoto. The main plot of the show is that her dad "Kakushi Goto" writes dirty manga, but doesn't want Hime to know. She only finds out when she turns 18. There were a lot of times in the show where she completely misunderstood something. [Take this scene from episode 1 for example](https://youtu.be/29QZXu6zgQY?si=GiHbGcQ0mFWgihR3&t=475) (7:55 for mobile) There is a moment in the show where she sees her father at a booth signing manga, but she does not recognize him and goes off to look for him. They assume that she just didn't recognize him in his mangaka outfit, but I think it makes more sense if she actively avoids making eye contact.
Radical Edward from Cowboy Bebop.
Genshin technically isn't anime, but the artstyle is so I'm gonna answer with one I'm very convinced of: Sanganomiya Kokomi Playing through her story quest yesterday, I noticed at least 9 autistic features that I recognised lol
Yukari Akiyama fro Girls Und Panzer
Year she’s definitely got a military history special interest. She’s practically info-dumping every episode.
Umika Konohoshi and Raimon Matataki from Stardust Telepath!
Myne from Bookworm
Haruhi from ouran high school host club
Shino Aburame from Naruto. Could have had some more character depth, but I love his sense of justice, unyielding loyalty to those who earned it, analytical talent, and unfiltered honesty. His special interest that might be considered weird by others, and almost always wearing sunglasses and a hoodie over his ears are just icing on the cake.
Rei Ayanami My Melody Shouko Komi (They are not from an anime but i think Fluttershy and Princess Luna from MLP)
Not yet adapted but gappy from jojo part 8
Fukuzawa from the masterful cat is depressed again today
like half the cast of my hero academia
I thought all these characters mentioned in the comments are pretty normal.. i guess you all mean the level 1 high-functioning autism verbal
Goku 1000%
Izuku Midoriya \o/ Never have I ever related to a character as much as I relate to him. I don’t know if that necessarily means he’s AuDHD like me, but it certainly means I headcanon him as such.
Noboru Yoshikawa from Great Teacher Onizuka
[удалено]
L, Jotaro, and Komi are the most obvious ones. But aside from those, I'd go with Miko Iino from Kaguya-sama: Love is War.
All of them
megumi, deku, L and tokito.
Yui from K-ON! 100%
Hank Hill from that Texas anime.
Naruto.
Ever seen Azumanga Daioh? All of them.
Misaki Nakahara from Welcome to the NHK
Near, L, and Mikami from death note are some
Kiryuu Moeka from Steins;Gate
Nate River, from death note
Nanami Kento. This one is, in part, personal bias, but the fact that he runs through what is considered proper conduct when he first meets Yuuji, has flat affect, is a creature of habit, is principled, etc. brings me much joy.
Tomori Takamatsu from the Bang Dream (Bandori) series
All the women in the Amamizukan in Princess Jellyfish.
Jotaro Kujo
Thorfinn from Vinland Saga. I really like him.
Everyone but Mayushii from Steins;gate
Most really dense romance anime main characters Like in the chivalry of a failed knight he doesn't pick up on romantic social cues eg Gf: I want to learn sword art with you Him:but me teaching you will only make your technique worse Gf: *look of confusion* Oh and he hyper fixates on memorizing everything about his next opponent and his hobby is swordsmanship Considering he was the abandoned and neglected child they never got him tested
