People out here being fancy with their shapes and I'm just happy I get it right when I put the round dowel into the square hole in my weekly competence test.

The missiles in DC are in plain site on Google Maps for anyone to see. There are 3 that form a triangle (one at ANdrews, one at Anacostia-Bolling, and one at Ft. Belvoir)
And they aren't locking onto anything. There are literally hundreds of flights in and out of DCA per day (plus hundreds more in and out of Dulles)
And fyi, that's not a secret or anything. Here is one of them on google maps. You can have fun finding the other 2
[https://maps.app.goo.gl/f7x2NEZCEhU8uxcW9](https://maps.app.goo.gl/f7x2NEZCEhU8uxcW9)
Most likely the US military even send Google the 3D model of it.
"Look my dear pilots... this thing is pointing at you if you deviate from your flight path!"
Is it a Patriot system? Tokyo also has a few of those just kinda laying around in public in case of an emergency.
Also an emergency did happen several years back and said Patriot system was ordered to get ready. Then one of the vehicles got lost in traffic and IDK the details but it was embarrassing I'm told.
It's a norwegian NASAMS system.
This site has a lot more details and photos of each site. As well as a lot of other stuff people tend to think is secret but is actually well known and out in the open (nuclear missile silo locations and photos, navy trident warhead storage areas, etc, etc)

The system was developed with Norway, but was a collaboration between their Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, and the US Hughes Missile Systems and Hughes Aircraft Ground Systems Group and it uses the American AIM-120 missile with US radar systems, etc.
The patriot is a long range, strategic defence system. It would be most useful for shooting down incoming missiles and long range high performance targets. The NASAMS is a short to medium range system, which is actually something the US has been quite weak on over the past 30 years. Most of their short range solutions have just to take stinger and sidewinder missiles and stick them on the back of humvees or M113 personal carriers. Norway actually has quite a lot of history with both Rocket and Missile technology. (although the missiles themselves in the NASAMS are American)
It's something the Soviets/Russians invested far more heavily in. If I had to guess why, I'd say the US was confident in gaining air superiority so they felt they didn't need as many advanced anti aircraft systems as what the Russians have developed over the past 30 years.
For an example of how badly is did go when the US tried to develop their own equivalent to the Shilka AA system, read about this....

Yep that's it. Multiple sites there, probably because of how close it is to DCA and Washington itself.
Also, they have launchers there so they can move them in times of increased security. There are photos of them deployed on the roofs of parking lots.
I believe the ones at the other sites are fixed installations.
I’ve managed to find the one at Andrews (https://maps.app.goo.gl/Xu9WHmYuVSthmyaG7) but I cannot for the life of me find the site at Anacostia-Bolling…
please help :)
here you go. Multiple road mobile launches here so it looks different to the other sites. I presume because it is the closest to the city, so they can scatter them out if needs be. There are photos of them deployed on the roofs of multi storey parking lots.

I honestly never knew about that one!
Pretty obvious once you know what to look for aren't they? Makes me wonder if there might be a 5th site to cover the north of the city, forging some kind of 5 sided shape that I'm sure has a name???
DC-area resident here. There's this narrow corridor along the Potomac between the no-fly zone over the Pentagon and the one over the White House. If you look where Reagan Airport is on Google Maps, you can see how difficult it is to run an airport) particularly that north pattern) with it being where it is in relation to the Pentagon.
And of course, South along the river, before the Beltway, is where there are awful plans to build the new arena for the NBA Wizards and NHL Capitals... so that'll help...
There isn’t a “no fly zone” over the pentagon that’s more restrictive than the overlying FRZ. The only no fly zones are P-56, which covers the mall/capitol/White House and the naval observatory. Nothing additionally special over the pentagon. Just have to get a background check and you’ll get a PIN you’ll have to give ATC when you call to file your flight plan as FRZ flight plans are not able to be filed online.
*im not sure if the filing requirements are the same for 121, as my primary experience and knowledge covers part 91.
Same, but as other comments have pointed out, shit is pretty dense over there.
Me? I live in Montana. Land wherever the fuck you can find a flat space! 😆
(Not flying advice)
I know this comment has already been swamped but I am actually a pilot, and to be able to fly this close, airline pilots (as well as other pilots in NoVA and DC/Maryland area) have to go through specific training.
The approaches going into DCA are wild because of the restrictions around that area!
What special training? I’ve departed out of DCA several times over the last couple months and never received any sort of special training. The only thing abnormal is a more in depth briefing for departure or the approach. I assume you’re talking about the DC SFRA slideshow course but that’s definitely not required at the airline level and mainly just applies to VFR traffic in the area
Oh wow you are totally right. I just (incorrectly) assumed that even 121 folks had to go through training and get certain waivers but now my understanding is that regularly scheduled commercial airline flights and pilots do not have to go through this.
https://www.faasafety.gov/files/gslac/courses/content/405/1310/200115%20SFRA%20Course%20NOTES.pdf
There is this slideshow, and then there is a huge waiver process for getting part 91 or 135 operations into DCA in VFR, whereas most planes on IFR planes are good to go in there whenever necessary.
A lot of the airlines that operate in and out of DCA include it in one of our initial qualification training events. I’m not sure if that’s required or just out of convenience, though. My fleet goes to DCA a lot (and is pictured in this video) and we just have one lesson where we fly the RNAV RNP 19 to a go around.
That being said, we aren’t qualified to take a GA airplane in there. We’d have to do the SFRA training if we wanted to go in anything outside of our fleet. I don’t have the slightest clue how any of that works.
That’s the normal departure path to the west. Flown this many times down to ATL (probably on the same plane as op). I’d have to imagine they don’t permit much deviation on it
My 2 fun Pentagon facts:
1) it has twice as many bathrooms as required for a building of its size since it was built during segregation and had separate bathrooms for different races.
2) The Russians were keen to know what kind of special bunker or something was located in the middle of the courtyard (referred to as ground zero by those who work there as a reference to where the nuke would hit) as they could see high-ranking officials going there nearly daily. It was a hot dog stand.
Wrong it has 10 sides. the insides and the outsides. Some may count the top and bottom as sides so possible 12. See what 5 cups of coffee does to ones thinking process - happy Wednesday :-)
Tbh I understand the symbolism or whatever but I always thought that this was a dumb building to hit during 9/11 just from a structural perspective. The building is built outstanding strong. Not to diminish all the lives lost there that day.
I remember when I went to visit the memorial and took some photos, even though it was forbidden, a security officer approached me already knowing about the game I had attended the day before. He greeted me, asked if I had enjoyed the game, took my camera, and formatted my memory card. I didn't even know the planes could get so close.
There used to be an airstrip there. It’s where my dad took his first airplane ride, in a Stearman biplane. The strip was demolished to build the Pentagon.
The DCA runway is like a mile away or less. The only option is completely closing the airport, which was heavily considered after 9/11.
Closing Reagan wasn't popular with Congress, who use the airport to fly home vs an hour drive to Dulles. So closing it wasn't an option. The flight paths were altered slightly, but yes, a hard bank is going to hit something important.
2 years ago I was driving home from work with my friend and all the exits off of 395 (the highway in this video) were blocked off for the 20 year anniversary memorial. I normally take the “pentagon south parking” exit to get to my apartment building, so I was like “ughh how am I supposed to get through the pentagon??” And my friend goes “well I guess they just want you to fly through”.
I haven’t stopped thinking about that since.
Almost like a pentagon or something…
Technically a heptahedron (if we ignore the middle).
they never taught me that shape in kindergarten
People out here being fancy with their shapes and I'm just happy I get it right when I put the round dowel into the square hole in my weekly competence test.
[Yeah let’s just fuck up everybody’s blood pressure today because you woke up and chose violence, thanks for that](https://youtu.be/6pDH66X3ClA?feature=shared)
the arch goes in the square hole!
Is *that* where it goes?
Acktuallleeee It’s a dodecahedron. (Not ignoring the middle) 😂
DoD-ecahedron.
Wouldn’t it just be a decahedron? Where are you getting the extra 2 walls? Or is that classified?
[удалено]
5 faces around the exterior. 5 faces around the interior. 1 face on top. 1 face on bottom. Google says that’s a dodecahedron (12 faced polyhedron)
How do you really know there's a face on the bottom though? It could be an open pit leading to the subterranean reptile cloning caverns.
Every good project needs a good way to limit scope hahah Plus the reptilian overlords are on the moon. Duh 🙄
I mean yeah the bosses are on the moon, but one of the main jump portals leads to the penta-basement.
The dodecahedron-basement 😂
That's where they keep the Shoggoth.
Yep. That’s 12. 👍
This guy maths
Well actually 🤓 👆
Q: What do you call a 10-sided building with Homer Simpson inside? A: A d'ohdecahedron.
They should call it...the square with an extra side!
The Polygon.
👊🏻
Flying in and out of DCA on the north side, particularly the river visual, is always stunning!
I'm surprised you can fly that close.
Probably had a hidden missile battery locked on them.
Oh that's what that beeping sound was
"Holy shit! They're painting us!"
I wanna see a comedy where they say that in the cockpit and it cuts to the ground of someone painting their plane and yelling at it as they fly by
Sounds like something with Leslie Nielson in it
Do you like wrestling jimmy?
Ever seen a grown man naked?
Problem with that joke is that only avgeeks would get it
Scoop it now!
They were probably just jammed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGvblGCD7qM
"Drop the fuel tanks and PULL! UP!"
Such an underrated scene, especially by 2001 standards. SHIT EJECT! EJECT EJECT!
😂
Incoming missile, break left
Yo any change in direction towards that five corner building is gonna make me sweat bullets
It's the "hello there" greeting, it guides you to the right spot. The closest the more frequent the beeping.
Stay on target!

It's a scavenger hunt! Get a surprise visit if you can find all three on google maps.
The fact that they even have the launcher modeled in 3d strikes me as darkly humorous.
Most likely the US military even send Google the 3D model of it. "Look my dear pilots... this thing is pointing at you if you deviate from your flight path!"
The 3D modeling is done by an algorithm automatically

I wonder why they would go with a Norwegian system over our own patriots. Are they that much better or something?

You‘re laughing but there are SAM sites close to the pentagon for its protection.
They don’t have a great track record
Were installed after the big sad

They let *one* plane through *one* time, and nobody lets it go.
SAM Battery: I am completely mentally stable… Oh look a Civilian Airliner!
All planes going into that airport go over the river in which by many important monuments and buildings.
Only if there's a south wind. Flying in from or taking off to the south over MD/VA suburbs is way less exciting.
I believe that is the landing pattern at Reagan.

You actually fly closer when landing on 15.

Ironically, there is a very shitty Costco just out of frame at the start of this video.
That Costco is my personal hell. Absolute shitstorm of a parking lot too.

Oh really haha! Maybe I subconsciously noticed it
😂 If OP started filming 10 seconds earlier, you probably could have seen the line of cars for 3 blocks trying to get into the parking lot.
Yeah I went to law school there
The puzzle palace! Always loved flying in/out of DCA as a pilot. Great views.
I think [the Puzzle Palace](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Puzzle_Palace) is NSA's HQ in Fort Meade, MD.
Yeah but it’s also what we called the pentagon. Such a maze inside.
Might be the Chrysler building
There was a guy in a plane once that got a very good look of that building close up
He was also a great magician because right after the close up view he made the whole plane disappear
Nice name
So funny. 😐
I’d give it a solid 9/11.
Now this is properly funny, well done
22.3 years, that's how long it takes for something tragic to become funny. It became funny 2 months ago
Following South Park rules I see. Very good, carry on.
I actually thought that. This was some of those peoples last images.

That 5-sided fistagon
Technically there are 10 sides of the building.
Also an inside and outside so that’s 2 more.
Top and bottom too, so another 2!
Fries and nuggets are sides too!
Lolol my apartment building is in this video.
Cool!
Whenever my friends fly out of DCA they send me videos like this saying “I see you” 😂
Or 11 sides…?
the bottom is still a side even if it's resting on the ground
They might even call it the Pentagon
That’s the best feeling when plane glides to left and right haha
At least you kept rolling long enough for Arlington Cemetery too!
Departing DCA!! It’s cool to see all the landmarks flying out of DC.
Wrong it has 10 sides. the insides and the outsides. Some may count the top and bottom as sides so possible 12. See what 5 cups of coffee does to ones thinking process - happy Wednesday :-)
5 sided donut?

The amount of cars parked really astonishes me
10 if you count the inside walls

The old fiveagon.
They have to rebuild it as a hexagon
I live in DC and always wanted to see what the pilot sees taking off and landing in DCA
Flight over the Pentagon? I thought it was a restricted flying zone.
Surprised they allow planes so close these days.
The old 5 sided squirrel cage.
The last time I tried to get in there I “got a phone number to call”. 😎 Like, relax Bro. No one cares about the Chrysler Building, anyway.

He greeted me, asked if I had enjoyed the game, took my camera, and formatted my memory card. I didn't even know the planes could get so close.
yes, you see this anytime you take off or land at DCA. Hundreds of times a day.
There used to be an airstrip there. It’s where my dad took his first airplane ride, in a Stearman biplane. The strip was demolished to build the Pentagon.
That plane is 100% being tracked by an anti-aircraft battery with missiles ready to fly as this video was taken.
Given how close that is, they are about 6-8 seconds away from *that* outcome. I’m surprised they allow flights to come in this close?
The DCA runway is like a mile away or less. The only option is completely closing the airport, which was heavily considered after 9/11. I guess that’s technically the truth. The success of that landing depends on whose perspective you are looking from.
Not funny.
Even ignoring the insensitivity it's a shitty joke, just unfunny.
If you say so
You have the opportunity to do something very funny...
The building is cool but wow the US sold it's soul to the car industry. All around it is just a wasteland.
