Probably around the same time they collectively stopped understanding what a yield sign means. The merge onto and off of the 400 on Dunlop feels like a universal game of chicken most days.

SmokeontheHorizon

And then they get on the highway doing 50.

Shot_Hair_4641

This is one of the biggest problems! My other frustration is the fact that a lot of them I work with at the hospital. So now i wonder if they are all on their phones and not realizing.

Grouchy-Stable2027

Literally the worst. I just send it anyway. The Sarjeant’s trucks are the worst.

Humble_Philosophy_73

I was just talking to my coworker about this today!! Lol just aweful

drlasr

The people that come to a complete stop when it should be a zipper merge... AGH

BleedinGumzMurphy

It’s a yield, that doesn’t mean zipper merge. So those people who are stopping and waiting their turn are yielding properly.

rustyarrowhead

if the traffic is flowing, it works best as a zipper, even if you are technically correct. the problem being that many people who come to a complete stop are not ready to utilize space effectively and forgo opportunities to merge.

green_link

IF traffic is flowing and HAS SPACE for safe zipper merging. but every single time i get off there it is NEVER safe to merge.

Skittlebearle

If you really want to see some incompetence, spend some time in the roundabout at the entrance to Park Place. It is amazing how many people use the wrong lanes, despite there being both signs and pavement markings. Not to mention the fact that probably 95% of people seem completely unaware of how to use their signals in a roundabout. It's remarkable.

JacobA89

It's not a real roundabout, it's built improperly.

new_vr

To be fair, that round about sucks. It's too close to other intersections so it makes it difficult to be in the right lane if you aren't familiar with the area. As for the signaling I have seen other threads talking about signaling for roundabouts. There was a lot of confusion especially since most of us learned to drive before they were prevalent. I wish we would do the system where you signal your intentions when you enter the roundabout, then signal when you are exiting. Currently the only rule is you should be signaling to exit

thebestdogeevr

Apparently you have to signal which way you're intending to go when you enter the roundabout, no signal for straight through. And then signal to the right when exiting. That's from regionofwaterloo.ca, unless they have different rules. Also don't stop in a roundabout for an emergency vehicle, exit the roundabout then pull over.

new_vr

So that’s not actually the rule. I looked in the HTA and asked a friend who is OPP. I think it’s the best way to do it though And I have seen people stop in a roundabout on 26 near Collingwood. Some people make terrible decisions

StrykeRXL1

Yup. Almost get hit every time I get in there. If you are on the inside lane, you need to be prepared to potentially go around the circle at least once. This is how they work.. keep moving and shift from inside to out when ots clear, not when you wanna exit and swerve infront of the guy on the outside...

Noslen11

This is incorrect and a prime example of the people I see almost causing accidents in the plaza. The right outer lane should always yield to the inner left lane. Just like you can’t make a left turn from the right lane you can’t take the 3rd(left turn) exit from the right lane either. Adding in you aren’t supposed to enter the roundabout BESIDE an oncoming vehicle either. The amount of people who don’t yield to traffic and think because they have an open lane they can enter is another huge problem. You are supposed to yield to ALL traffic currently in the roundabout because inner traffic can be exiting. They should have designed these roundabouts to do a little more hand holding and force the flow of traffic more especially with the two to single lane exits that inevitably fail to efficiently handle the traffic coming off Mapleview.

StrykeRXL1

That's not correct. There are two lane enterences into the roundabout. Both must yield to the cars currently in the roundabout. Once in, the outer lane, most right side.. is the exit lane, they circle and exit on their exit. The inner left lane, once in, rides the round about until it's safe to merge to the outer right "exit" lane. Then proceed with the above steps. This ensures a continuous flow of traffic. Which is the point of the roundabout.

NotaeIsOnReddit

You're correct that cars entering must yield to traffic in the roundabout (in _both_ lanes, even if you're entering in the outermost lane), but I'm afraid you're otherwise mistaken, and /u/Noslen11 is correct. You've likely fallen for the same assumptions I made when I first encountered a two-lane roundabout, and admittedly had to look up the proper procedure for. It seems appropriate to treat the outer lane as an exit lane, since crossing over lanes from the inside feels hazardous (and unfortunately _is_ hazardous when people misunderstand the rules), but you shouldn't _ever_ be changing lanes inside a roundabout. Instead, use the right lane to turn right or straight, and the left lane to go straight or left (or turn around). If everyone follows these rules (as posted on signposts and in road paint on the lanes) then traffic flow in the roundabout is preserved, and lane changes will not be necessary, as traffic will not cross over the path of other cars that are present. That is, _if_ everybody enters the roundabout in the correct lane, takes an appropriate exit, yields to both lanes, and doesn't pass in the roundabout. Then of course there's the brilliant 2-lanes-enter-1-leaves design of the Park Place roundabout in particular, which requires some additional judgement when 2 cars intending to go straight enter the roundabout together. [Here's](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fexternal-preview.redd.it%2FtKzT7nPPzHnMTkaRvBy8k1CKFfKamA_7lRdNVn1PYCQ.jpg%3Fauto%3Dwebp%26s%3Dd52570f6557d31cea6f9e55c60b5b939aa9a8167) a handy diagram of how it should look.

Noslen11

You aren't supposed switch lanes in a roundabout, only exit. The right lane isn't "the" exit lane. Your exit lane is designated by the signage at the road junction. Unfortunately what causes confusion with this roundabout is that it's a 2 lane in (off Mapleview) 1 lane out at the 2nd exit with both inner and outer lanes marked as straight lanes even though its a single lane exit.

DontBeADick_okay

Yeah I think the set up of this roundabout is so dumb. I’ve only used it once or twice but I take roundabouts all the time in Kitchener and it makes so much more sense to keep 2 lanes for exiting so people don’t get confused. Even I was confused using that exit even though I knew I was in the proper lane to do so. Granted I understand spacing was probably the reason why they did a 1 lane exit

Noslen11

I think it was just a bad oversight by the plaza because it narrows to one lane over the cross walk but is two lanes again right after. It’s not a city roundabout so doubt it went through any rigorous approval process.

RadioactiveDeuterium

People entering the roundabout from mapleview also don't ever check if someone is continuing through and just enter. Every time I head from the keg/new lcbo side straight across to where starbucks is someone coming from mapleview nearly runs into me not checking and when I blow my horn at them they look at me like they have no clue what they did wrong.

SayHaveYouSeenTheSea

Oh yes I work in Park Place I’m very aware 😂

Plucky_ducks

Beamer's and Audi's are the worst.

cashrchek

Pickup trucks are the worst.... then beamers and Audis.

MrsBean1

It’s unfortunate but logic and common sense aren’t very prevalent these days, especially in regards to driving.

Dudemanguy4000

Yield signs, what are those?

cr38tive79

It's like a 'me first' mentality.

Killersmurph

We no longer have a social contract, it died of Covid during stage One of the pandemic. Most people just do whatever the Fuck they want now, and if you get in a parking lot accident it's almost always going to be equal fault so drive accordingly, and avoid problem areas like the park place roundabout entirely. I work for Costco, the only way I will ever enter or leave that lot during business hours is out the back exit behind Rona. Just too much stupid trying to go through our lot, or into/out of the main entrance.

cr38tive79

I used to live in Barrie and once I saw a vehicle turned into the lane last minute and ended up hitting the curb lol.

denny-1989

You first, after me.

Savingdollars

In Toronto it’s the most expensive car first. They are after all the most important and must not be delayed by thinking of rules or others.

RadioactiveDeuterium

Yeah, everyone here constantly takes about bmws and audis but I find range rovers 10x worse. I once had a range rover driver litteraly roll down her window and straight up say she is better because of her car after cutting about 10 people off. Happened in the yorkdale parking lot when a ton of people were lea ing. Not even joking.

TheSwedishOprah

I've lived in cities all around the world, traveled to over 40 countries, and Barrie has some of the worst drivers I've ever encountered anywhere on the planet.

DontBeADick_okay

Honestly yeah, I’ve only lived in Canada but I’ve lived in some cities much bigger than Barrie and I’d rather drive anywhere else 😅I think the huge mix of city versus small town drivers doesn’t help based on the geographics of the area, but it also seems a lot of people throw common sense out the window

Killersmurph

Brampton and Sauga are still worse by direct comparison. If you're comparing the GTA 5-10 years ago to Barrie now, it's in accurate. Parts of the GTA are way worse than Barrie, though we are definitely the worst of the Suburban "cities" in Southern Onterrible.

DontBeADick_okay

Perhaps, but how someone feels about where they’d rather drive based on what they’ve experienced is subjective, and for how small of a city Barrie is, there sure are a lot of dummies on the road imo

Auslander_13

When BPS stopped enforcement of the highway traffic act.

Canuckleheaded1

They only enforce the HTA when they are forced too. For example, after a collision occurs. Sorry I cannot think of any more examples. They are that bad at enforcement.

Auslander_13

We call them the Barely Police for a reason....

Killersmurph

I mean the worst places for this are parking lots, and the Park Place roundabout, which are private property, and will result in an equal-fault in most insurance cases anyway, so I doubt even in the event of a collision they will do anything other than show up eventually and fill out a perfunctory report for the insurance company.

DamageCase13

Lmao mmhmm yeah that's definitely it.

UsernameRalph

My favourite is when the lights are still red and they’re moving into the intersection. Barrie is just awful

Alive-Huckleberry558

Don't get me started on traffic turning left unto Mapleview from Bayview, when the advance turning light changes and they still proceed even though they end up blocking traffic !

Quiet-Name2512

That happened shortly after the Barrie Police stopped doing traffic stops.

Stevepac9

This is one of the reasons I don't go to costco. Parking lot is a mess

DamageCase13

This city just keeps getting worse and worse. I can't stand driving here anymore. There's absolutely zero common courtesy and everyone's so insanely selfish. I still try to be nice, let people in, wave thanks extremely obviously but it's getting harder and harder to keep doing those things.

Killersmurph

OP is apparently unaware that owning an Audi, Tesla, or BMW gives you an automatic right of way over us riff raff... to think us, plebes believing we don't have to yield at all times to our betters... This used to be a /s comment, but it's not sarcastic anymore, it's literally just life anywhere in Southern Onterrible now.

Designer_Fix9123

Was going to make this post yesterday too! The amount of “2nd in line” cars just racing through stops signs, not waiting their turn at a busy 4-way is shocking to the point where I’ve started just laying on my horn the entire time they’re going through the intersection. It happens at Johnson and Grove daily. My research has shown overwhelming results pointing to one particular race.

SayHaveYouSeenTheSea

I straight up yelled “FUCK YOU” enunciatively to his face and he squirmed

big_galoote

We imported a bunch of assholes who can't drive from south of 7.

JacobA89

To be honest the majority of the bad driver I see on my daily commuter are over 50 white people.

DamageCase13

💯

Present-Decision5740

People drive like ass in this city. I feel like most of my driving is spent anticipating other people's bad decisions. Not stopping at stop signs, unsafe lane changes, not moving when there's an advanced green, turning into the incorrect lanes, proceeding into and stopping in intersections when traffic ahead isn't clear. It's brutal.

trumpisamoron1

Come out to the country. Everyone drives like they're special needs.

HopefulNothing3560

My understanding is no ticket can be enforced for blowing threw a stop sign in private property in a mall or Costco lowes parking lot

lotusalchemist

When people also learn to use a roundabout properly

These-Ad-295

I’ve also noticed the three lane change left/right turns. Lol

imlikegeesybutimweez

These theoretically arent that bad when you consider other traffic. If nobody is turning right or it is a 3 way road its not really unsafe.

These-Ad-295

Well it’s an illegal lane change. So there’s that. You’re supposed to turn into the left lane and then make your lane change.

imlikegeesybutimweez

Legality and safety are two different things. Passing on two lane highways can be far more unsafe, but it is legal.

These-Ad-295

I’m mean sure, i won’t be arguing on that front. But OP wasn’t complaining about safety. More so ignorance of other drivers around the area. IMO ignoring the “rules of the road” tends to develop bad driving habits while letting other drivers on the road know that you don’t follow rules well. Or know them lol.

imlikegeesybutimweez

Thats fair.

GrodNeedsaHug

It's a combination of impatience and lack of consideration. Otherwise good people can turn into massive jerks with this combination.

Apprehensive_Play_25

"I'm given the finger by somebody in an Audi or BMW" there's your answer

Humble_Philosophy_73

Driving on mapleview in general is a train wreck, blocking intersections at every intersection, can't stand it

thefoofighters

Probably about the same time those same people moved here from Toronto.

scottimandias

As a former resident, I don't believe they mostly knew at least as far back as 2000...

james21b

It was somewhere between April 2020 and April 2021. Barrie became GTA.

Torcanman

It happened when the great pandemic migration TO Barrie happened...

Krissei

This is hilarious, because my mom was \*just\* talking/complaining to me about this this morning..! I thought we all passed the same driver's test guys!!!

Odd-Ad-2545

As soon as people started pouring in from the bigger cities. That's when. Barrie has, to some degree, lost its small-town charm, partially due to the way people drive nowadays and the frustration caused by traffic. As for Park Place and other parking lots with stop signs.... if it's private property (unsure if Park Place is considered private property), road rules from the HTA don't apply and can't be enforced, from my understanding.

trumpisamoron1

That problem is everywhere.

dustinagr

It's cute that you thought there was a time when people knew how to use them.

SayHaveYouSeenTheSea

Super cute

SayHaveYouSeenTheSea

lol at whoever is down voting these comments you obviously can’t drive 😂

Skizzor

I just treat every four way stop as it should be legally done. If I pull up at the same time as someone else and I’m to the right, I’m going. If they also go, this is only going to get them frustrated when we both come to a complete stop and I’m looking at them like they’re stupid. I have plenty of time to waste your time for being inconsiderate.

bdart1980

I think it’s just stop signs in general.. I love seeing almost everyone just cruise around 15/20 kmph at the corner a few houses down from me while my kids play basketball at the end of the driveway.
