Incoming Curse of the Mook.
On the bright side it will give the local news channels something fun to cover. In college I always enjoyed hearing about the new and wild schemes folks came up with every year to reverse the curse. That and Whitey Bulger sightings.
I had forgotten about this. Looked up the game log on baseball reference, what a crazy start to the season.
In 2006 he had 9 homers in the first 13 games, good for a pace of 112, and then only had 7 in 358 PA afterwards.
Can't agree more V.
Way, way, way too early to begin things like this.
It's like last year when Arraez was hitting over and around .400 and so damn many articles and stories came out about him hitting .400 for the season, can he, will he.
He was hitting less than .350 on Sept 1st (.349) and finished with an awesome .354 BA last year.
Mookie is awesome but a hot stretch and a great month doesn't mean any articles or stories or posts like this should take place yet. It's such a long damn season.
If Mookie is at 10.0 WAR on Sept 1st, then let's begin to discuss this, not now.
I don't really take this kind of post as some sure thing he's gonna break any records. More just noticing he's gotten like 3 WAR in a month or so of games which is absolutely insane
If he cranks out an MVP season 6 years after his first, switching, in that timeframe, from Corner outfield to Short.
I mean holy fuck nobody does that, I am so glad I got to experience the Mookie era.
He was supposed to start the season at 2B with Luc at SS, but with Lux’s throwing problems they swapped them.
IIRC, Mookie hasn’t played SS for more than a few innings here and there since he was in the minors.
If you want to catch Babe Ruth ‘27, you better have a hell of an April because no one closes out a season like the Bambino. Ruth hit .368/.468/.896 in September.
My only guess for how he got 13.7 is he used 693 plate appearances, which is what Mookie had last year. But even then he’d be on pace for 13.76 which rounds up to 13.8
Yeah no way but the fact he's had a borderline ASG participant's total season value in essentially one month of the season definitely deserves recognition IMO
can we just say that over the last 10 years, Mookie has now surpassed Trout as the best overall player in the league. It blows my mind how this never gets talked about.
Except he has been good at shortstop. So good he is no longer switching to 2b when Rojas comes into the game as of today. Wait you said he doesn't have the arm LMAO bro you have to be thinking of Lux Betts arm in RF was legendary
Imagine trading both those guys?
and Don Orsillo
honestly the biggest loss for the Red Sox
C’mon man
This used to be a family show
Here comes the Pizza!

Boston, are you guys OK?

cause it's funny
Imagine trading Mookie Betts
And as everyone know, what you are "on pace for" at the end of April always pans out. That's just math.
Ken Griffey Jr. hit 75 home runs in 1998.
Just beating out Shane Spencer and his 73 HR.
Until Chris Shelton absolutely shattered those totals with his 120 homers circa 2007

Cody Bellinger hit .415 in 2019
Yeah, it’s reasonable to expect positive regression and Mookie to finish with 17-18 WAR
But what if you regress all his stats to the mean?
He wouldn’t even be that good
Could Dak hit .300?
Finally, a man of reason
What are you doing if you’re not taking small sample sizes and extrapolating them at the beginning of the season

the anti-yount
I still can't believe Yount never made an All-Star team as an outfielder. An MVP, yes, but no All-Star selections.
i didn't know he switched to SS until this comment. holy shit

3 WAR on April 30th is nuts lmao
Per 162 he’s on pace for 15.2 WAR. Per 150 that’s 14.0 WAR
Sox got Connor Wong though
Make sure not to jinx it
It's not a jinx until Sports Illustrated declares Mookie the "best shortstop ever?"
And even then, with how far SI has fallen I’m not sure the jinx powers still work.
THE NATURAL
Meanwhile, our game day chats are concerned because he hasn’t hit a home run in 2.5 weeks.
How do you know he's good if there's not a clip of him hitting a home run on reddit?
Vibes and My Truth.
Also the SS experiment is going so well he is now going to play it full time instead of making way for Rojas when Rojas is in as of today. Freak.
He’s pretty good. Can’t imagine him being traded ever

Dude it’s still April 😂😂
Is there a way to see what his WAR would be if he was still playing corner outfield?

Yeah no way but the fact he's had a borderline ASG participant's total season value in essentially one month of the season definitely deserves recognition IMO
Well he can’t do anything against the dbacks. Just need to change the schedule to contain him.

🙄
WAR is very suspect. He has not been good defensively at SS. Doesn’t have the arm to play there.
Thanks for letting us know you don’t really understand how WAR works.
Then write a full summary for us plebs. Go ahead.
Weirdly ignorant lol
Seems you’re the only one having the issue. I’m sure a quick Google search will help though. Have a good night!
