I think it's even worse when you watch their hands. They start coming up with over a full second of time to cover themselves, but they never actually come *together*. Like, what are you trying to do? Start the wave?
Yeah that's the thing that gets me. It's not like she's oblivious like some fans can be. She sees the ball coming. She puts her hands in front of her face, but not entirely. I think she genuinely doesn't realize how fast that hard object is coming at her and it goes right between her hands. I hope she's okay though. Could be a broken nose.
Reminds me of an Orioles-Red Sox game I went to years back. I forgot my glove, but was hanging around at the Eutaw Street seats for a bit during batting practice. David Ortiz was taking his hacks when he hit an absolute laser in my direction. I thought about maybe barehanding it before quickly thinking better of it, and ducked. The sound of that ball hitting the seat behind me sounded like a gunshot. Thought afterwords imagine what that would have done to my hands if I attempted to catch that.
I broke my finger catching a pop foul that went over the backstop at a little league game. Obviously, velocity wasn’t a factor, but the ball was spinning at a crazy rate and came down on the tip of my finger.
Had the exact situation happen, except it was my friend, left field, and Alex Rodriguez.
He was like, "oh man I was so close to catching that" and then realized it would have left him with at least one broken hand.
I think you’re spot on. It may actually be more difficult to catch (bare handed) than people realise? Not a baseball, but I had a similar situation catching a football kicked by a pro. It didn’t smash my face lol, but I remember being very surprised at how hard it came at me.
I used to play 1B. Even today, 20+ years later, I often miss a simple catch because I'm trying to snag it in the "pocket" of the glove I'm not wearing. It just feels natural, but whatever I'm trying to catch flies right between my thumb and first finger.
I live in fear of the day a foul ball is hit to me in the stands on national TV for this reason.
Def seems like she did that thing where you try to use both hands but are so uncoordinated, your hands sorta pass over each other and you end up actually covering less ground
Sometimes freeze really takes over. I was walking with some pals to a show, and walking is my usual mode of transportation. A car was turning towards us, and didn't seem to see us. My friends all scattered and I just stood there looking like a deer in the headlights. I'm lucky the car stopped or else I would have been on their windshield.
Of the four instinctive reactions to danger, "freeze" is *by far* the most common. Flight, fight, and fawn happen, but everyone freezes at some point unless they’ve had the instinct carefully trained out of them (say, during basic training or even nursing school).
Then, to be fair, the response should have been to duck and cover or move. Like the 3 people around them.
I really don't mean to victim blame or anything, I just don't want this to be the start of even more netting so that *no* baseballs end up in the stands.
I think you're overthinking this a bit. This has happened so many times over the years. It's part of the risk of going to a baseball game. Line drive foul balls can kill people, a home run is not likely to do serious damage.
Not really. Literally the same exact argument could (and was) made about foul balls until *very* recently. The odds of getting hit by a foul ball have always been minuscule. But here we are.
It genuinely only takes one injury to change things. And for a lot of things, that's good. In this case, I would much rather they make seats "splash zones" instead of the ever-increasing nets. But teams will go with the method that produces better profit margins.
Why bother? We have language tools that allow us to not need to assume. I'm not interested in dumbing down my language because some people want to make stupid political divisions.
Lol that was 100% a woman. Looked and dressed like a woman. Hair like a woman. Saying you aren't sure is terribly insulting. Nothing like the woke to turn the simplest concept in the world into some deep mystery holy fuck. Then to add in the most cliche internet'y 'die on this hill'. Wow are you going to post the Harlem Shake next?
Legit the best part of this clip is that lady’s reaction to her friend getting domed. It’s like she’s looking around to make sure everyone else saw it.
I think everybody gets the wrong idea about how much the average person is paying attention to shit.
I mean you see the movies with cars driving on the sidewalk and think everyone will jump out of the way of shit when that is not true. In reality people aren't paying attention to shit like you are watching this video. Or people have had a few drinks, or people have other reasons for slow reflexes.
I came out of a bar and got jumped by these guys one time in New York. That shit happened so fast it was unbelievable. Sure it may have been partly the booze that explains why I did't expect these guys were coming from my back and push into the street.
Another time I saw a chain get snatched in a NYC subway and that shit was so fast it was unbelievable too. So I would not judge this poor lady so fast.
Yes absolutely. Worked in a sandwich shop and a car drove right through the front window. I remember the glass shattering and thinking "oh, someone dropped a glass bottle..." and then it just....kept...going
My uncle tried to catch a ripped line drive well into 3rd base stands barehanded. Bounced off the side of his palm and his hand looked like a purple Mickey mouse glove for a week, but he was pumped and sent everyone the picture - almost had it, he says. That's the way to be.
Tangential anecdote:
20 years or so ago I attended a Red Sox-Braves series at Turner field and saw a dude in the section below me reach up and barehand a Manny Ramirez BP home run.
It was an amazing thing to behold, but my God the *sound* that ball made when it hit his bare palm still makes me cringe to this day.
Oh yeah they coming in hot I’d imagine. l had a similar experience but with a football. l tried to catch it and got punched in the sternum instead 😭
When you think about how fast home runs can come off the bat, it’s not surprising to see the damage they can do.
The black girl sees the ball coming and correctly moves 3 feet to the right.... looks over and sees the other girl just standing there letting the ball hit her right in the face.
Then the camera zooms in and she's laughing lol
Went to a Giants game once and a (Giants legend) Ryan Garko line drive hit this lady right in the back of the head. Which is why you probably shouldn’t turn around and talk all game when you’re sitting down the sidelines. At least with the nets stuff like that can’t really happy to the same extent
So I slowed it down trying to figure out where the loud Doink came from, hoping it was rail then face then back onto the field….
It was actually face, then rail, then back onto the field… that loud Doink is actually the sound of the ricochet.
Surrounded by Met fans in the stands, it's the two Yankee fans that caught the glove. But one of ours gets the ball to the face and pending horrible black/blue bruise for a few days. Sounds about right.
Poor girl. I feel for her. Interesting how the two ladies sitting beside her had the same basic instinct as well, putting their hands palms-up and separated away from the face.
I think the ball went close enough behind her head to knock her hat off and deflected off the seat behind her. Slow the video down and zoom in. Watch the ball path, it doesn’t change direction until it’s behind her back.

We don't know that she's innocent.
Getting her own baseball card tmrw
Nah not cute/quirky enough.
I spoke to her after the game on MySpace. She was Ippei's parlay advisor.
(GASPS)
She knows what she did
Heard she rebroadcasted a Major League Baseball production. She got off easy.
Did she have implied oral consent?
Is anyone truly innocent?
Not according to The Good Place.
We’re just innocent men
Ball don't lie
Neither will the bruise
Ball don't lie?
Objection your honor! She sits there and stares at it like a deer in the headlights. Guilty!
That’s gonna bruise
How fitting to honor Lou Gehrig by giving someone a life-changing injury
Too soon
I hope they're okay, but damn. Some people have the reaction speed of a dry kitchen sponge.
Right. “Oh there’s a ball coming right at me. Better just stay right here and let it blow my face up”.
I think it's even worse when you watch their hands. They start coming up with over a full second of time to cover themselves, but they never actually come *together*. Like, what are you trying to do? Start the wave?

I remember a game in Miami where a fan used a glove to catch a homerun from Stanton and still broke his hand.
I think she was trying to catch it and missed

You just gotta bring your mitt bro
Def seems like she did that thing where you try to use both hands but are so uncoordinated, your hands sorta pass over each other and you end up actually covering less ground
I’d say the sun fucked her up too.

She never had the makings of a varsity athlete.
Seriously. I feel bad laughing because fucking OUCH, but holy shit, lady.
![gif](giphy|Wsk4ZbGMeavNm|downsized)
Me tbh. Damn freeze response
To be fair it looks like the sun was a factor.

The self preservation instincts on display here are off the charts in the negative direction
They?
Gender neutral pronoun for when you aren't sure what someone's gender is. I have no way of knowing that from the information available to me.
Looks like a girl and... well wasn't the most manly attempt at catching. I think you're safe to assume there.
Why bother? We have language tools that allow us to not need to assume. I'm not interested in dumbing down my language because some people want to make stupid political divisions.
Girls suck at catching things, got it. /s
there's still a chance for you to not die on this hill
Lol that was 100% a woman. Looked and dressed like a woman. Hair like a woman. Saying you aren't sure is terribly insulting. ah shoot there goes that chance then
You?
My God if that doesn't epitomize the experience of being a Mets fan right now

Yea. I saw that reaction lol.
Legit the best part of this clip is that lady’s reaction to her friend getting domed. It’s like she’s looking around to make sure everyone else saw it.
She had so much time to move lmao
Her grandfather was a deer.
Underrated comment
But her legs don't work today.

She was staring at the ball coming at her, what are you taking about?
Her hands literally rise to cover her face like 2 seconds before the ball hit her
Topps Now card incoming?
I wanted to laugh before I saw the impact just because of the title. But yeesh it looked like it at minimum rang her bell.
if you still wanna laugh watch her friend react at the very end of the clip
If you’re going unsure of yourself, tuck your chin into your chest and cover your head with your arms. Don’t try to catch a MLB home run
Fuck that ima try catching it
I'm gonna catch it in my open mouth like a seal catching a fish.
Im gonna catch it with my balls!

No, we were taught in soccer that when you head the ball you have to attack it with the top of your forehead. Same logic applies here
Was your coach Happy Gilmore?
This is the most Reddit thing I've ever read
I love the idea of some neckbeard going into the brace position in the bleachers every time he sees a fly ball coming in his general direction
Now I’m imagine like entire sections of fans going full duck-and-cover every time Shohei launches a missile to right
Beware of bats and balls at all times - The Ball Gurl
I need to start clicking more random profiles, damn
Holy shit what a profile lol
I'm 12 hours late... Damn what did I miss?
Poontang
Thank you, queen thot!
Those can't be 36 DDs...need more angles to confirm.
Does MLB authenticate a face?
"This face was rearranged by a Juan Soto home run on Sunday, June 2, 2024."
The black girl sees the ball coming and correctly moves 3 feet to the right.... looks over and sees the other girl just standing there letting the ball hit her right in the face. Then the camera zooms in and she's laughing lol

It’s like someone who’s never caught a baseball from 5 ft away is trying to catch a home run ball.
Actively trying NOT to catch it
#POW RIGHT IN THE KISSER
#POW RIGHT IN THE KISSER
It looks like she kept her eye on the ball at least
Her eye is now the ball!

Holy shit… a right proper face full…

Wow they didn't even try to move before it hit them. Idk if they never saw it sun or what
not the best survival instincts. duck and cover? nah. get out of the way? nah. just stare at it meteoring into your face. this is the way.
Missed it by. |……………..that……………| much.

How dumb can you be?
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that probably didn't tickle.
That one gal is laughing her ass off while her friend dies
Ouch, was the fan ok?
Hard to track the bal when you just looked up from your phone 📱
If you've witnessed these flyballs to the head in person, you never forget that sickening "THOK" of rawhide missile vs skull.
🤦🏻♂️
Gotta keep your eye on the ball.
Nice topps now can have a set of 2 swollen face cards
Don’t sit there if you can’t catch
Poor gal
Surrounded by Met fans in the stands, it's the two Yankee fans that caught the glove. But one of ours gets the ball to the face and pending horrible black/blue bruise for a few days. Sounds about right.
This is why I’m paranoid as fuck sitting in outfield seats. Alongside the netting and middle decks FTW.
Poor girl. I feel for her. Interesting how the two ladies sitting beside her had the same basic instinct as well, putting their hands palms-up and separated away from the face.
That is one of the most unrecommended ways of catching a baseball.
When females think they're ready to attend a pro game...
theres this great Ludacris song
I think the ball went close enough behind her head to knock her hat off and deflected off the seat behind her. Slow the video down and zoom in. Watch the ball path, it doesn’t change direction until it’s behind her back.
I saw this live...it was brutal. Direct hit. Battleship sunk.
gotta keep your eye on the ball
Doink
Waiting for the Topps Card
Now we wait for the Topps Now card
ToppsNOW card incoming
First AB of the game lmao
Lead off homer off the face of opposing team Mets. Then go ahead game winning homerun off Mets in the 9th. Mets fans gotta be having nightmares.
I love the lady in front of her in full laugh mode
She shouldn’t have been standing there.
It's a sad day when an obvious Happy Gilmore reference gets downvoted.
Looks like her left hand deflects it right before hitting her face.
To lead off the game too. Now you gotta sit there and eat it* for an entire game. *through a straw
Ha
That was totally catchable.
t least she’ll get her own baseball card now.
Always keep your eye on the ball
Where's their Topps Now card?!
