Cards are not investments. Collect what you like.

StubbornKindOfFellow

Exactly. Collect what you actually want to own, not what you plan to sell. If you're looking for an investment, there are a TON of better options than trading cards.

Icy-Length-8605

So the 96 Tiger Woods SI Kids Card isnt an investment? 52 Rookie Mickey Mantle wasnt either? Maybe not in 1996 or 1952 but in hindsight? Maybe I should rephrase to say what card of his would be most relatable in the future similar to the previously mentioned cards?

chinoischeckers

You've listed 2 cards out of billions that have been produced and have decreased in value from the date they were released. Yes, cards are not an investment.

mookz23

Invest!

mtr32222222

In hindsight sure but for every 1 player that works out there are hundreds that don't and there's always the risk of injury. At one point Derrick Rose looked like a great investment and look at how his career turned out.

ultimateF_21

Fidelity.com if you’re looking for investments.

cwmosca

Cards are not an investment. There are so many other things that have a better ROI.

Judge208

The only Wemby card I would have any interest in owning long term is his Bowman 1st Auto.

LonesomeWulf

Seems like the same as always, Prizm Silver and Optic Holo for the higher population stuff, gold parallels if you have hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend. Not having NBA licensed autos makes it really weird for him though. Agree with Chino as always, stop worrying about investing and just collect stuff.

Icy-Length-8605

100%. I just needed a hobby and it happened to be at the time prior to the draft so I starting collecting his cards, magazine covers, ect. If it pans out great, but if not, then Im ok with that too. I just enjoy everyone's opinions on what cards hold what value now and going forward. Optic Holo though really? I havent been in the hobby enough to know information like this. Why would a Donruss card hold so much importance?

chinoischeckers

Optic is sort of like the brother to Prizm. Some people don't like the look of Prizm and so they prefer Optic to be their flagship card. Think of it like Bowman Chrome to Topps Chrome in the baseball world. And the Holo is the equivalent to Prizm's Silver Prizms.

cwmosca

I would agree with this. I prefer Optic over Prizm, except the inserts from this year’s optic release are awful.

Lethologicuh

Guess we'll have to wait 2+ decades and find out!

Beginning-Piccolo209

In my opinion anything that’s numbered really especially 1 of 1, /50, /75

passmyclass

Bowman chrome auto is the card you want

BruceBannaner

The same thing happened when Lebron came into the league. His rookies still hold weight.

ATHs right now. You’re insane if you think stocks will keep going up higher. Just take a look at the derivatives market. Lmao

TWrX-503

Wow nice! How about the derivatives markets? Got any graphs of those? Are you familiar w/ ETFs and how they truly function? Do you know the difference between a lit market and a dark pool and their effect on stock prices and true price discovery? Do you understand PFOF? Naked shorting? These are all pretty pictures, thank you.

mookz23

You are welcome.

TWrX-503

You don’t know what a derivative is do you 😂

Devh1989

Iirc there has never been a five year period where the stock market didn't go up. Unless the USA/world economy collapses it will continue to do so

chinoischeckers

Also, if I may ask, why did you list the SI kids card as a possible answer for your question? Because of the Tiger Woods SI card?

Icy-Length-8605

Not necessarily. More so because for a bit that was his only produced card and some considered his 1st card. It wasnt as mass produced as he is today so should he become the generational great, does that "1st" card hold value similar to Tiger or Jordan or Serena.

chinoischeckers

Gotcha. It definitely won't be the SI kids card. I say this because most basketball collectors collect NBA cards and value having the NBA logo/team logo and name somewhere on the card above all else. So it would have to one of his Panini cards, unfortunately. So his logoman this year from the high end sets would be one for sure and his solid gold parallels from Pizm/Optic/etc along with his black parallels. And really his RC's and not his rookie year inserts, as well. But again, try and collect what you like and if it happens to appreciate in value then great! But if not, then no sweat. I say all of this because, we are in unchartered territory here with Wemby. For him to become a GOAT would mean that he'd have to achieve MJ or Lebron level achievements and so far, that has been unheard of from a player that is over 7'2. So everything has to break right for him to achieve that and as a result, chances are he won't achieve GOAT level and thus his cards would ultimately decline in value over time.

Icy-Length-8605

Great information to know. I thought early on I could collect every Wemby card from his rookie year until I realized just how many parallels there are, and how much this hobby might be after seeing the National Convention card price tag. It was that moment I was content with collecting as many simple base cards as possible along with other memorabilia like magazines he's been on the cover of, the newspaper from France when he was drafted, ect. I appreciate the variation in the collection more than holding a Gem Mt 10 logo man. Still on the fence about getting them graded though. It would be nice to know, but do I really HAVE to have it as part of my PC...still debating. Even THAT gets expensive! I should have taken up pickleball.

Vanquisher_Supreme

Clearly, he is actually just a Tiger Woods SI Card.

Bowlingnate

Um, it's likely a few will jump to the top in terms of value, like gold bases. As for more common cards, let's imagine Wembeyama is successful, those with transactional volume will likely slightly outpace others from time to time, before a floor is established. Liquidity is a feature of an asset. But from other POVs, my rando-rando Dennis Rodman inserts second whomever said, "collect what you like." For high $$$ top-end collectors, im sure some will look at many, many, many, many data points, and we'll see a 500K/69% CAGR sale next year 🤪🤭. Those data points is what matters. "Many different markets"

Icy-Length-8605

You had me at Dennis Rodman. Fav player of all time. I need to grow a PC of his stuff too.

CardsCaptured

IMO his earliest on card autos(pack pulled especially) will always hold well. Licensed or not they will command a premium due to their exclusivity during his rookie year. And that’s just how I collect. Price being similar, I’d much rather have an on card auto of a player I collect 10 times out of 10 rather than a parallel or rare insert.
