Addressing your last question: There are no *unsafe* areas in Dublin. Pick any corner of the town you want.

chipman650

Dublin is about as safe as it gets.

You might enjoy Little Yosemite at Sunol Regional Park, lots of boulders to scramble over. Hiking Flag Hill is fun. Also Mt. Diablo is a popular (and challenging) hike.

*You can live anywhere in Dublin. There are MANY natural areas around there - I'll just mention Las Trampas Wilderness up the road as having some great trails. Also, Shadow Cliffs, just south, is a nice park to go swimming. Lastly, the "subway", BART, has a Dublin station - that means you can go anywhere in the Bay Area from there without a car - San Francisco, Oakland, etc. Have fun!*

bennytobby

Oh I didn’t know that about their subway system. That’s actually pretty insightful, thank you so much!

bludvarg

not a subway, its entirely above ground in dublin. i grew up in dublin, it was a small irish town with no Bart train when i was a kid. since i left, it has at least doubled in size, more than quadrupled in population and the culture has done a complete about face. its almost unrecognizable to me when I visit now. sad for me, but good for my little towns growth and prosperity! it used to be called shoemaker city (before my time) i think because of all the irish cobblers that lived there

DifficultyDangerous2

See East Bay Parks for good hiking trails and things to do also the Dublin Farmers Market every Thursday at Emerald Glen. Park is a fun local thing.

Lots of this advice is outdated - I grew up in the area and there is exponentially more to do vs 20 years ago. There is a cool new city center in San Ramon - that has brought a lot of SF restaurants out. You got downtown Pleasanton and Danville for a small town downtown feel - each has a handful of bars and plenty of restaurant. The whole area really is an idyllic suburb. If you want to go clubbing - then yeah you need to leave the area and head for SF Oakland San Jose etc….but those areas also come with crime, filth, crazy bums, poop…you know the drill. Plenty of hiking and outdoor activity here also - not sure what specifically you are looking for though-

I think you’ll be generally safe in Dublin. Don’t underestimate the heat when trekking in the east bay though! Take lots of water, go with others, and let people know when you’re going into nature.

dingusduglas

Where are you from? Like, are you new to that part of the Bay, or new to the region, or new to California? Do you have a car?

Michigan_Go_Blue

You're effectively an hour closer to the Sierra and Tahoe than the rest of us which is where most of us would want to go. I had to attend a meeting in Pleasanton and brought my binoculars to watch some Canadian Geese in a pond. That was the highlight of my day

DubCTheNut

Man, fuck them geese.

Surrounded by Danville and San Ramon, great and expensive communities to live in. Overall good environment, can’t go wrong. Check out round valley and mount Diablo for hiking. Awesome views!

Speaking as someone who was once a 20-something working in the Dublin/Pleasanton area, my advice to you is to hop on BART at the end of the day and head into the city.

funked1

There’s no there there.

leturmindflow

For indoor climbing gyms your only option is touchstone. They have a gym in concord that’s currently getting a new bouldering wall that should (hopefully) be ready by summer. https://touchstoneclimbing.com/diablorock/new-bouldering-area/ Pacific Pipe in Oakland is also under touchstone and is I think the biggest gym in the US. It’s definitely worth checking out at least once while you’re here. If you’re lucky you can catch a no-initiation fee promo, but otherwise it’s kinda pricy and maybe not worth it. They also offer 10-day passes. Day passes are $30 but if you go with a member they can get you in for $20 as a bring a friend discounted pass

barsbangermogie

there’s also peak of Fremont by Fremont which is as far as the Diablo rock gym! and if u wanna go outdoor climbing, there’s many trad routes by Diablo and lots of boulders down at little Yosemite, both of which aren’t too far like a max 35 minute car ride

leturmindflow

That’s true, forgot about that. Haven’t been to the peak of Fremont since it was still city beach lol. DRG is probably still the better option imo if the new bouldering wall is up by then

calimota

There are a couple of good climbing gyms in Oakland within walking distance of a BART station. Try Great Western Power Company and Pacific Pipes.

ggm3bow

It is safe and has BART. Enjoy the Bay Area!

Pmenece1

well i used to work in next city to Dublin. It is decent place to live, however do not expect exactments happening there.

raggedJack8t

Dublin is as safe as can be for sure, but sadly shit still happens. Coworker of mine moved into Dublin for work and within a week his apartment got broken into and his work laptop got stolen among some other stuff. Not the warmest of welcomes. However, I want to stress that it is still by far super safe. Blue line BART is the least sketchy line in my experience, and nothing sus at the two stations in the Tri-Valley area. I've walked late at night all around and never felt unsafe. You can leave stuff in your car and it probably won't get broken into, def compared to SF, SJ, or Oakland where a laptop in trunk is still at risk. As for shit to do, you can probably visit all the local suburbia stuff to do within a month, things like quaint downtowns, chill hikes, mid size malls, wineries, etc. W/ BART and being willing to drive a bit further (let's say <40 min) you have SF, East Bay, and South Bay at your fingertips, which is plenty of good food, scenic hiking, big(-ger) city life, climbing gyms, bars, nightlife (kinda of a bitch to get back on transit sadly, BART plz extend your hours).

https://bahiker.com/ And check the East Bay Regional Park maps: https://www.ebparks.org/ Generally cooler going to the west, but can get quite hot for some spells in summer, although often the sea breezes kick in enough after a few days to cool it off. Pleasanton Ridge, Las Trampas, Sunol, Morgan Territory, Chabot, etc. East Bay Municipal Utility District has trails too; you can get a permit for them online. Look at Mt Diablo too.

muscleliker6656

Dublin is safe as heck

NewYorkCityApple

You should live in Walnut Creek. More stuff to do. Better restaurants and bars. BART straighter shot to both airports and SF

SandstoneCastle

Closest climbing I know of is on Mt Diablo. Closest climbing gym I know of is in Concord.
