Every year I patiently wait for the Anthology singles to make it to streaming so we finally get it and every year the best the have to offer is a lavish box set of some groundbreaking album. Bah, humbug.
When I hear the full version on YouTube it goes on so long repeating the same bit with variations it’s like the proto-version of the Hey Jude na-na fade-out bit.. like Paul noted and stored the idea for a bit later
Meh there's only 12 notes in all of music. Every single melody has been done in the past many times over. No songwriter can reinvent the wheel. Some are just more upfront about this than others. Bob Dylan made a name for himself reimagining old traditional songs and he's considered by many to be the greatest songwriter who's ever lived.
> Meh there's only 12 notes in all of music.
A major 9th sounds different than a major 2nd though. That only applies to monophonic melodies and neglects microtonal music.
Ok sure but you know what I'm getting at. To use a Beatles song for example you can hear the melody of the *All My Loving* verse about a minute into Kathy's Waltz by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. I'm sure they didn't consciously "steal" this. It's just virtually impossible to come up with a musical melody that has never once been done before in the history of music.
He mocked him for not being clever enough to get away with it. John used a song (Stewball) that he could update/steal and get away with it! John even plagiarised himself - Instant Karma is just a re-write of All You Need is Love, which itself steals bits from Chanson d’amour and the French national anthem and She Loves You and and and they got away with it
I think War is Over is one of John's worst songs ever. Annoyingly repetitive melody and very trite lyrics that seem like they were written in a couple of minutes. Plus it is overproduced.
I don’t know how this is even a question. Maybe I’ll get downvoted to hell for this but Wonderful Christmas Time is one of the most annoying Christmas songs ever written. It’s like Paul was playing a prank on us.
There have definitly been songs that are hypocitical on his part, but I don't get how War Is Over is one of them. I feel like the only people it'd be hypocritical from are the ones who initiate war, but other than that, lyrics wise it's a pretty straight foward "happy holidays and lets hope for a more peaceful year" song.
It's not like with, say, Imagine, where if you wanna truly be part of the ideology its talking about you have to essentialy be a non nationalist, non religous socialist that helps others.
Maybe I'm mistaken because John never really addressed his intent with the song (other than to say he realized he needed to put his political views out there with a little bit of 'honey' like on Imagine), but based on how he talked in interviews and how he wrote other songs the song comes off as "Gee hope you're enjoying your Christmas, meanwhile people all over the world are dying and suffering and starving."
Personally I hate Christmas songs that are written by rich people in their mansions or penthouses designed to make people barely scraping by feel guilty.
War is over (if you want it) was a big anti war campaign by yoko and him at the time. Personally I think the idea is more hopeful than depressing and why shouldn't John say what he thinks just because he gained success?
Exactly. It's an awful song not because it's technically bad but because it's cringey and preachy.
Wonderful Christmastime is just a nice nostalgic Christmas song. Writing a Christmas song is right in McCartneys wheelhouse.
Overall Happy Christmas is a much better song if it weren’t for the preachiness. John was just so single minded in overcompensating for his personal shortcomings by embracing his messiah complex
I heard a guy sing Wonderful Christmastime with nothing but a guitar and it was the best version of that song I’d ever heard.
Anyone singing Happy Christmas though sounds great. It’s the superior song.
Wonderful Christmastime for me. I've even grown to appreciate how the delay on the synth-stabs is not set quite right, so that those delayed hits as slightly out of time.
That said, both songs were played on a radio station in my area a week or two ago and I found it quite nice to hear both tunes back-to-back like that. They're both great songs in my opinion, i just far prefer the carefree joyousness of WC.
God, I do love this song.
I have the unedited version on my bootleg Beatles Christmas Album (which I highly recommend), and I have the edited version on the B-side to Free As A Bird. Sure the lines are repeated through the whole song, but it's dangerously fun.
War is Over isn’t even original. The melody is taken from a traditional song and the opening line’s rhythm is taken from another
Wonderful Christmastime on the other hand is entirely original and experimental while truly embodying the Christmas spirit. It is a way better Christmas song
War is over is by far the better song and also the better Christmas song.
It's simply a song that existed forever, but still had to be written. Lennons genius.
It seems like another Lennon/McCartney call and response. While John is using Christmas to carry the weight of world peace on his shoulders, Paul was just in the corner like “I dunno man, I’m just havin a good time.”
Wonderful Christmastime used to be my preferred one (it sounds cozy and was easier to digest). It took longer for War is Over to grow on me but I dig it now; I’d rather it be War is Over as opposed to like, Do They Know it’s Christmas.
I agree with those that say they both said what they were intended to, so I’d say my appreciation for them is pretty equal these days.
My honest favourite for this time of year is "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)". Not sure why it hasn't been adopted as Christmas song, it fits perfectly into the vibes
I get warm fuzzies whenever I hear John starting the song with “So this is Christmas…” and the droning guitar. It’s fantastic. I love it. Then Yoko comes on, and I want to remix it without her.
Whenever I hear the opening notes of Paul’s song, I will fight anyone in my way and run over old ladies to change the station or turn down the volume.
_Happy Xmas (War is Over)_ holds a special place in my heart from my childhood and more recently.
As does listening to John Lennon more generally at my grandparents’ home during family gatherings.
And sadly, _War is Over_ feels all too relevant most years - when a war has been heavily covered in the news.
That is part of a HUGE discussion about what is a Christmas song. This is probably not the place for that. I'm just glad I don't have to hear it again until next November.
This is one of the most repeated questions on this subreddit. The response is going to be the same as the many other times the question has been asked.
Sure but it’s entirely subjective regardless of the outcome. There is no correct answer. if you’re just referring to this subreddit as it being no argument here, then that may be a fair statement as opposed to universally.
> Sure but it’s entirely subjective regardless of the outcome. There is no correct answer. if you’re just referring to this subreddit as it being no argument here, then that may be a fair statement as opposed to universally.
Well yeah. That is why my first post says **"War is Over is overwhelmingly seen as the better Xmas song"** Not sure why you disagree wit that.
Not really - just don’t think it is fair to claim one is overwhelmingly favored before anyone has spoken. I quite enjoy Wonderful Christmastime and too many people assume that other’s equally hate it as much as they do
It’s been asked before and the same answer will apply, so he’s not speaking before people have spoken. They already have. And now that there are more answers, he still hasn’t said anything untrue.
Let's assume for a moment that your argument is true.
Why then have I heard Wonderful Christmas time exponentially more times when I'm out shopping?
I can count on one hand, heck, on one finger the number of times I've heard Happy Xmas/War is Over while out & about during the past 20+ holiday seasons.
If War is Over was the objectively better Christmas song, shouldn't it have risen to the top and appear more often commercially than Wonderful Christmas time?
> Why then have I heard Wonderful Christmas time exponentially more times when I'm out shopping?
This year there is a pretty big reason. It has War in the title and has been used less this Winter than in previous ones due to Gaza and Ukraine.
The UK charts is based on just sales and streams, and they are pretty neck and neck in the charts with John at 22 and Paul at 25 but in the US where the charts are built on streaming, sales and radio play John's been played less meaning Paul is at 35 and John is outside of the top 100.
Lennon's song has over 60 million more streams on Spotify but that is not always going to translate to shopping malls and bars were one is a festive song about christmas and the other has war in the title which puts a dampener on the party. Bars and shops want you to spend they don't want you to think of suffering and contemplating bigger questions.
Happy Xmas is probably technically the better song, but Wonderful Christmastime is more upbeat and Christmasy sounding to me so I tend to listen to it more around the holidays.
There is an obvious correct answer to this question but I will say that Wonderful Christmastime is underrated, or maybe just overhated? I dunno, but people shittalk that song endlessly and I still really love it. Just dumb McCartney pop, it's charming, and that McCartney II-era synth stuff sounds great.
I absolutely hate the simple synth line of Wonderful Christmastime, so Johns song wins hands down. I believe Yoko is even singing during the Chorus and the song is still somehow amazing.
War is Over is a bunch of trite, cliched lyrics pretending to be deep and meaningful.
Wonderful Christmas Time is a bunch of trite, cliched lyrics that are just meant to be fun.
This isn't a debate by a long shot. Christmas time is a garbage song and one of the best examples of how Paul completely lost the plot for a few decades there.
Fucking HATE WC with a passion.
The.
Worst.
Xmas.
Song.
EVER!
What was the Letterman joke about about Mark Chapman saying "I shot the wrong Beatle" after hearing Mc C's solo stuff?
Happy Xmas (War Is Over) is a direct copy of the melody of an old traditional folk song called Stewball - listen to the Peter, Paul and Mary version from 1963. It's one of my favourite Christmas songs, but slightly tarnished that it wasn't John's original melody.
The Monkees (Micky) recorded a version of Wonderful Christmastime. It’s better than Paul’s, but it still goes nowhere.
The Alarm did a great version of Happy Christmas many moons ago.
I could, and I do, listen to both of these songs at random times through the year (even if it's March). I remember loving War is Over before I even knew it was John and before I even really knew who the Beatles were. It was played on the radio several times every December and I would personally only listen to Christmas radio for that one song. However, I have come to realize that Wonderful Christmastime has in recent years become my favorite Christmas song.
So as a better Christmas song it is Wonderful Christmastime, as a better song it is War Is Over.
Though I love both songs, and I personally LOVE the synths on Wonderful Christmastime.
(I also love Christmas Time is Here Again, Ding Dong Ding Dong, etc)
Happy Christmas (War is Over) is definitely my favorite but I was quite surprised when I got to Reddit and found out how much people hate Wonderful Christmastime. As Christmas songs go it's not that bad.
Come on Christmas! - Ringo
At least someone around here has some class.
Dear Santa and I Wanna Be Santa Claus are even better.
Not on spotify for me unfortunately
Aaaaat the Chriiiistmas Dance…!

Christmas Time (Is Here Again.) 😎
O U T spells out...
Every year I patiently wait for the Anthology singles to make it to streaming so we finally get it and every year the best the have to offer is a lavish box set of some groundbreaking album. Bah, humbug.
I think they should have polished that off and given it a proper recording. It’s incredibly catchy. Holy cow, even the Beatles throwaways are catchy.
When I hear the full version on YouTube it goes on so long repeating the same bit with variations it’s like the proto-version of the Hey Jude na-na fade-out bit.. like Paul noted and stored the idea for a bit later
Came here to say this. Great song!
Yessssssss!!!!!!
I feel like people keep arguing 2 different things here. War is Over is a better song. Wonderful Christmastime is a better *Christmas* song.
This right here
FINALLY
Wonderful Christmastime makes me want to drill a hole directly through my eardrum.
I was struggling with a way to put my thoughts. You did it perfectly.
The correct answer is Ding Dong, Ding Dong
https://i.redd.it/z3ckj4ac7a8c1.gif Couldn't be any other way.
What is this gif
and is there really a ding dong on show in it!
The correct answer is always *Ding Dong, Ding Dong* 🙂
More of a New Year's song to me.
Ring out the old ring in the new.
It’s certainly less annoying than Wonderful Christmastime
I like Paul’s song more than most. War Is Over is the better song by a pretty wide margin.
Then again the melody of John's song is basically a cover (or whatever you call it when you take an existing melody and make a new song out of it).
Calling it a cover is being very generous.... He completely stole it. I've never heard Stewball until this morning and I'm shocked.

I'm sure they didn't consciously "steal" this. It's just virtually impossible to come up with a musical melody that has never once been done before in the history of music.
Idk if this is an unpopular opinion, but apart from lofi, I’ve never heard anyone play microtonal music and been like “yeah this is enjoyable.”
King Gizzard would like a word
Yes. And he had the nerve to mock George for plagerising My Sweet Lord
He mocked him for not being clever enough to get away with it. John used a song (Stewball) that he could update/steal and get away with it! John even plagiarised himself - Instant Karma is just a re-write of All You Need is Love, which itself steals bits from Chanson d’amour and the French national anthem and She Loves You and and and they got away with it
IIRC it's a public domain melody that's been used for nearly 100 years now
What song is the melody from?
Stewball - Peter Paul and Mary
It’s actually from a public domain folk song. John had every right to utilize the melody
the folk process in action
And it’s still a better song than Wonderful Christmastime anyways.
True, so is the original.
exactlt
I think War is Over is one of John's worst songs ever. Annoyingly repetitive melody and very trite lyrics that seem like they were written in a couple of minutes. Plus it is overproduced.
That's exactly how I'd describe wonderful Christmas time! I like War is over wayyyyy more
Point taken. They have similar flaws. I guess I dislike War Is Over a little more because it takes itself way too seriously for such a trashy song.
I love Wonderful Christmastime :(
It's a whole vibe, don't worry about the "popular consensus". If a song speaks to you, then you enjoy it :)
Too bad it sucks
War is over.
If you want it
I don’t know how this is even a question. Maybe I’ll get downvoted to hell for this but Wonderful Christmas Time is one of the most annoying Christmas songs ever written. It’s like Paul was playing a prank on us.
Amen. I have to turn it off when it comes on.
What's scary is that *cover versions of Wonderful Christmastime exist.*
“maybe I’ll get downvoted for this but…” /goes on to express an extremely popular opinion
Because some people, like myself, love John Lennon but cringe at his preachy hypocrisy.
Personally I hate Christmas songs that are written by rich people in their mansions or penthouses designed to make people barely scraping by feel guilty.
Wow, that's a really weird take on it. It's never made me feel guilty and I've never heard it as anything other than a heartfelt plea for humanity
War is over (if you want it) was a big anti war campaign by yoko and him at the time. Personally I think the idea is more hopeful than depressing and why shouldn't John say what he thinks just because he gained success?
How is being anti war hypocritical?
Most of Lennon’s preachiness isn’t about pacifism it’s about helping other people. Something he did very little of.
By far
Have you forgotten the entire Christmas album from Ringo?
Dear Santa is so good that The Fab Four tribute band did a cover of it in the style of Oh Darling
Pipes. Of. Peace.
Not a christmas song
Watch the music video
I get it. But the promotional video isn't the song.
More of one than Stay Another Day.
I don’t get the hate for Wonderful Christmastime, honestly I love it. But the answer to your question is unequivocally WAR IS OVER
I heard a guy sing Wonderful Christmastime with nothing but a guitar and it was the best version of that song I’d ever heard. Anyone singing Happy Christmas though sounds great. It’s the superior song.
Wonderful Christmastime for me. I've even grown to appreciate how the delay on the synth-stabs is not set quite right, so that those delayed hits as slightly out of time. They both scratch different itches. I like to play them back to back so I get both John and Paul during christmas time.
This is the right answer.
Christmas time (is here again) Link: https://youtu.be/aCEGg4Y6qWw?si=LyXEiPFWOZC1apkG
God, I do love this song. I have the unedited version on my bootleg Beatles Christmas Album (which I highly recommend), and I have the edited version on the B-side to Free As A Bird. Sure the lines are repeated through the whole song, but it's dangerously fun.
War Is Over any day of the week.
For me, War is Over.
Happy Xmas After a few minutes, I just want wonderful Christmastime to end
I like them both equally for what they were intended to be. I get what they were trying to do with each song and they both succeeded.
If I want to clap on 1&3, Wonderful Christmastime. If I want to clap on 2&4, Happy Xmas.
Clapping on 1 & 3 is the greatest sin anyone could ever commit
Happy Xmas doesn’t have a 4
Isn’t it actually in 12/8? I was simplifying though for the clapping joke
War Is Over
It’s *Happy Xmas (War Is Over)* but I love both.
I think war is over is a better song but wonderful Christmastime is a better Christmas song
…does Mull of Kintyre count?
War is Over isn’t even original. The melody is taken from a traditional song and the opening line’s rhythm is taken from another Wonderful Christmastime on the other hand is entirely original and experimental while truly embodying the Christmas spirit. It is a way better Christmas song
War Is Over.
War Is Over. By a mile.
Little Saint Nick
Yellow Submarine (played on Christmas Day)
LOL!
As with most of these questions I love Paul’s song but slightly prefer John’s.
I still don't understand what makes Wonderful Christmastime *so awful.* It isn't a banger but it's perfectly fine.
War is over is by far the better song and also the better Christmas song. It's simply a song that existed forever, but still had to be written. Lennons genius.
War Is Over aka Stewball Was a Racehorse
War is Over but i do really like Wonderful Christmastime
It seems like another Lennon/McCartney call and response. Wonderful Christmastime!
wonderful christmastime
Wonderful Christmastime
War is Over is simply a better song
My honest favourite for this time of year is "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)". Not sure why it hasn't been adopted as Christmas song, it fits perfectly into the vibes
Probably because there's absolutely nothing christmas about it?
"Peace On Earth" is pretty strongly associated with Christmas
Wonderful Christmastime
I get warm fuzzies whenever I hear John starting the song with “So this is Christmas…” and the droning guitar. It’s fantastic. I love it. Then Yoko comes on, and I want to remix it without her. Whenever I hear the opening notes of Paul’s song, I will fight anyone in my way and run over old ladies to change the station or turn down the volume.
Same with me, but I got to say Yoko isn’t that bad on this song.
War is Over, definitely. I love Paul, but WC is cringey.
Wonderful Christmastime
Didnt we do this the other day? Pipes of Peace
I love them both equally.
Ringo's album of Christmas music, *I Wanna Be Santa Claus*, offers a number of excellent songs.
I Wanna Be Santa Claus!
Wonderful Christmastime is the best song by far.
War is Over
Happy Xmas War is Over
War is Over
_Happy Xmas (War is Over)_ holds a special place in my heart from my childhood and more recently.
War Is Over by a mile. It's easily my favorite modern Christmas song. Wonderful Christmastime is cute, but kind of forgettable.
I'd say that's the one thing it isn't! Some people may not like it, but it is catchy as hell. There's a reason why it has endured
It's not really an argument. War is Over is overwhelmingly seen as the better Xmas song.
That’s a highly subjective statement that only reflects your environment, so it is an argument.

Not really - just don’t think it is fair to claim one is overwhelmingly favored before anyone has spoken. I quite enjoy Wonderful Christmastime and too many people assume that other’s equally hate it as much as they do
I enjoy both for entirely different reasons. Barenaked Ladies one of my favorites did a instrumental cover of Wonderful Christmas time
It’s been asked before and the same answer will apply, so he’s not speaking before people have spoken. They already have. And now that there are more answers, he still hasn’t said anything untrue.

I would never look to shopping mall playlists as a barometer of what’s good.
Wonderful Christmastime is an understated masterpiece.
Happy Xmas is probably technically the better song, but Wonderful Christmastime is more upbeat and Christmasy sounding to me so I tend to listen to it more around the holidays.
Wonderful Christmastime is one of the most annoying songs ever created.
I like both a lot, but War is Over
Paul: having fun with uncle jim on Christmas!!! John: merry Christmas you fuckin c**t
I think of War is Over as an anti-war song cleverly disguised as a Xmas song. I prefer it over Paul’s.
War is Over, I don’t hate Wonderful Christmas time but War is Over is a masterpiece
not even close... War is over
Happy Xmas is the better song.
Wonderful christmastime
wonderful christmas time > war is over
As a Christmas song wonderful Christmas time. War is over really isn't about Christmas despite being the better song.
Several other Christmas songs also have a peace on Earth bit.
Paul
I absolutely hate the simple synth line of Wonderful Christmastime, so Johns song wins hands down. I believe Yoko is even singing during the Chorus and the song is still somehow amazing.
Wonderful Christmastime is like fingernails on a chalkboard
Even though it’s a rip-off of Stewball by Peter Paul and Mary, War is Over is the better song.
Yes.
You're seriously asking that? One is the best Christmas song ever and the other is the worst!
Seriously?
War is Over is a bunch of trite, cliched lyrics pretending to be deep and meaningful. Wonderful Christmas Time is a bunch of trite, cliched lyrics that are just meant to be fun.
Neither is a Beatles song. Solo efforts from John and Paul. Best is War Is Over. Wonderful Christmastime is annoying, innate s**t
The Beatles AI version of Wonderful Christmastime is nice.
I like both but happy Xmas is the only solo John Lennon song I can stomach, and I really like it. It’s a perfect Christmas song
I mean Happy Xmas (War is Over) is literally a perfect song and in my opinion the greatest Christmas song *sooo.*
Just "NO" on the McCartney offering!
Neither are Beatle songs
We did this one day before yesterday
Both fucking terrible.
This isn't a debate by a long shot. Christmas time is a garbage song and one of the best examples of how Paul completely lost the plot for a few decades there.
Oh please. No contest. Christmastime is one of the worst songs ever.
Honestly, both are meh
Fucking HATE WC with a passion. The. Worst. Xmas. Song. EVER! What was the Letterman joke about about Mark Chapman saying "I shot the wrong Beatle" after hearing Mc C's solo stuff?
Ringo's Chompy Carrot
Rocky Raccoon
I'm going to lie and pretend like my sweet lord is about the nativity
Fuck sakes. We should have more posts about this!
It’s Billy Preston singing O Holy Night with Aretha.
Wonderful Christmastime! It's so fun.
Happy Xmas (War Is Over) is a direct copy of the melody of an old traditional folk song called Stewball - listen to the Peter, Paul and Mary version from 1963. It's one of my favourite Christmas songs, but slightly tarnished that it wasn't John's original melody.
Happy Xmas ( War is Over) by a mile.
I don't really like Christmas songs after all so War is Over.
The Monkees (Micky) recorded a version of Wonderful Christmastime. It’s better than Paul’s, but it still goes nowhere. The Alarm did a great version of Happy Christmas many moons ago.
I could, and I do, listen to both of these songs at random times through the year (even if it's March). i think it's 'everywhere it's christmas'( at the end of every year)
Little Saint Nick
Christmastime (Is Here Again)
The only correct answer is “I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes, Christmas is all around us…”
What about Pipes of peace🫣
Very clearly War Is Over. Wonderful Christmastime is repetitive and an earsore.
War is Over is wonderful. A Wonderful Christmas Time is excruciating.
Happy Christmas (War is Over) is definitely my favorite but I was quite surprised when I got to Reddit and found out how much people hate Wonderful Christmastime. As Christmas songs go it's not that bad.
War is over and it's not even close
Wonderful Christmas time is Paul not the Beatles.
War
That slightly off-tempo synth with the chorus of Wonderful Christmastime is iconic I didn’t say good, just iconic
Everywhere It's Christmas
