Our Titan was like that. His dad was 130 lbs and mom was 105 so we figured he would be a large Berner. Nope. He was around 80 lbs at one year and the next year filled out to about 100.
It’s a good thing, it’s less stress on his joints and slower growth allows for those joints to set in better.
My guy is a similar size! He just reached 8 months and is about 65 pounds. I’m honestly glad he’s been on the lower end of the range, it’ll be healthier for their joints later on :)

My last berner was a 1/4 St. Bernard, so he was usually around 115-120 pounds. It’s been very interesting seeing how much smaller Kuma is in comparison! I’ll be very surprised if Kuma breaks 100 pounds
Oh goodness, I read your comment to fast and I thought you ending by saying something about you were considering him for breeding. And in my head, I thought you were saying because he's small you are now no longer considering because he's little...
But I tell you all that to say - omg you should breed him with other littles!! Make mini berners!!!! I'm an adopt don't shop gal myself but the idea of mini berners got me so excited I felt I had to share!! Lol
I have two berners myself but they are both mixes. My beast Buster is about 100 and is mixed with saint Bernard and probably something smaller. Our other is mixed with some sort collie (the hair on that one!!!) And she's about 80 but should be 70 lol.
I will say, there are benefits of smaller dogs. They tend to live longer and have less hip issues. The berner life span and st. Bernard's is really short, like 6 - 8 years, buster 10 years going strong. Nala we had as a foster at what we guess was 3 but who knows, and she's now 8 and super healthy.
You lucked out with that handsome little guy!!
Beautiful boy 🐕 Is there any way to specify a smoller buddy over the big wooly mammoths? Don't get me wrong, I love BSD at any size, but I need to find one that could move around my space with ease.

This banana thief is \~80lbs/40kg of pure mischief and joy!
Mine is turning one tomorrow and he’s just about 85 pounds. I used to feel sad that he wasn’t a big bear like I thought he might me, but he’s the perfect size. ♥️

That's sad ppl get sad about that!! I really do prefer smaller and would be completely happy if ours stayed on the smaller side, could care less about the size, just want him to be as healthy as can be
That’s a great way to look at it! I definitely had some preconceived ideas about Berners, but they are all so lovely, unique, and quirky that I quickly learned to just love everything about him. ♥️

Moxie is 2 and we can’t get her past 58 pounds. We weren’t expecting it but we can’t say we mind!
This makes me hopeful that our 75lbs girl will live longer than average

Milo did that at age six months. Then he gradually went up to 90 pounds over the next eighteen months. We thought we lucked out but shortly after age 2 1/2 he started to gain weight and grow, his chest got broader and now at age 3 1/2 he is 135 pounds. The thing that is so amazing is our boy is lean, not fat at all just so big. And lastly he was the smallest puppy of the litter😂 He had us fooled but he is the most gentle giant we have ever had.

Here’s my 4 year old, 65 pound ball of energy
Ours is 11 months and 80lbs! I’m honestly hoping he doesn’t get much bigger because I think he’s a great size now :)

Our 60lb boy is doing great, gets around easier than our previous 100+ Berners did. Honestly hoping to get lucky and get another smaller one in the next couple months. Such an affectionate breed and being small makes it much more survivable! 130lb Birdie used to take me out!
Our vet said that Bernese used to be a 50-60 lbs breed back in the days and when the breed got imported to NA, we bred larger and larger for whatever reason, which is why they have so many health problems now...
Not sure if it's any true or not, but I thought it was worth sharing.
Our last boy topped out at 75 pounds. He almost made it to 11 before cancer got him. He looked like he was JUST starting to get arthritis in a front side and Honestly that was probably because he liked to jump down 4 steps to the landing. He got so much joy doing that.
If your boy is small just enjoy not getting crushed by 100+ pounds of dog on your toe or lap. He will make up in weight with pure love.
My Dodie (Odin) was a year old and 98 LBs. The vet said he was perfectly fine. He always has access to food. (My man's a grazer.)

Yes, our boy (left) is the sports mode and our girl (right), is comfort mode 😂 they’re both 80-ish pounds but wear it differently.
Milo is 84 lbs and 19 months old! I always have his bowl with food. He just eats when he’s hungry. My last berner was huge so at first I was s as little bummed. But now I’m grateful because it will be better for his joints and health. He’s such a joy, I love him!!!

Archie is 4 years old and weighs between 88 and 90 lbs. His father was 120, his mom was 100; the breeder predicted he would be about 110. I don't know how we would have managed if he was over 100lbs. The funniest thing is that people will ask if he's still a puppy, or they'll ask if he'd under a year old!
Here he is with his 12lb Cavalier King Charles Spaniel brother, who is 8 months old.
Mine is 2y/o and 70lbs on a good day. Unfortunately it's due to health complications. So just a warning to anyone's berner who seems just a bit *too* skinny, maybe check the heart and kidneys.
Growth doesn't seem to be very linear in these guys. They will keep growing until they are up to 4 years old in terms of how broad they become. Mine was 80lbs at 1 year, filled out to around 95 by 3.5.
My guy is lean as well. He's 82 lbs at almost 2 years old. Vet is happy and he seems in good health. I get a lot of comments because people aren't used to seeing slimmer berneses but overall it's prob better for his health vs being overweight.
Ours which we got from animal shelter after they pulled him out of rough malnourished and confined situation, is now 65 lb at the vet estimates 2 years old. The want him to get another 10+ lb on him.
Don’t get me wrong, our Zeus one of the most amazing dogs I’ve ever had, but he’s gone the other way and is a massive 150 lbs. Some days I wish he was a bit smaller and I worry how it’s going to impact him as he gets older. He’s 4 now and hasn’t shown any signs of health problems but it’s alway a looming fear. I’d literally need helpers just to load and unload him from the truck if he couldn’t get up and down by himself!
My girl is fully grown and only 83lbs. She's also super energetic and doesn't fit the lazy, laid back reputation all Berners seem to have lol... but I wouldn't change a thing. She's a sweetheart. And I can't even imagine how painful it would be if she was heavier since she keeps stepping on my feet 🥲*
Wren turned one in March and seems to have topped out around 67 pounds. She's still on puppy food, free choice feeding, some people food, and no limits on treats (in general*)
Shes a healthy weight. Just seems to be a petite girl.
Our second boy never grew beyond 2/3 size of our first male. He had undescended testes. He is only about 40kg and is now 5 years old. He's fit and well just a compact version. He also has quite a small head but he's a delight*
My little lady is 7 months and is currently only weighing in at 50lbs! She was the runt of the litter and I couldn't be happier.

Very true. Was just curious more than anything. Always been a big dog family and find it funny he's the smallest we've had considering the breed

My boy is 96lbs. Approximately 10-15 under what should be. Love every ounce of that boy!
My current bear was like that. He kept growing for another 6 months. He's still pretty trim compared to some I've seen.
I’ve got a 75 pound 3 year old girl.
The smaller dogs are better and usually live longer healthier lives. Typically, the bigger ones have a much higher chance of hip and elbow issues.
