Careful with fake plants as the pointy ones can cause tears in the bettas long fins, it’s recommended to get silk ones or real ones :)

He's beautiful! Your buddy and my boy could be twins!

sheltieoath

Thank you! I love him. He is my Mother’s Day fish. If you’re a parent of a preschooler you may know PJ Mask. There’s a kid named Connor who turns into a blue cat boy at fights crime in his PJs. So my 4 year old naturally wanted to name him Connor.

Realistic_Okra8006

I love that!

You're doing OK, but if you really want to do this Betta justuce you will look into getting live plants (you're already 70% there ... you have a nice tank, and most importantly, you love your fish). Then you can just build from there.

sheltieoath

Thank you. I have live pothos in there. Are you saying i need more?

WhiteStar174

Fish love plants!! They always love more (from my experience) as long as they can swim through them!

Here's a beginner's guide to creating a planted aquarium. It's not difficult, but it is a seperate skill from basic aquarium upkeeo, and though not required, it will greatly enhance both you and your fish's experience. 😊 https://youtu.be/PtXmn-ZowzE?si=ZbKrZrpkHs2gl3aB

You'll want to read up on the proper care practices on this sub. I can tell you that with a 5 Gal tank, you'll want to do 20% water changes weekly. You should also get a API master test kit (the test tube version) so you can check water parameters weekly. You need to get a gravel vac too.

sheltieoath

Thank you. I neglected to add i had a water vac that i used for the first time today.

The fins look raged, but not like fin rot raged. He's likely snagging them on the sharp plants and getting them torn. Try replacing the plants with soft silk or real ones and see if that makes a difference.
