Ironically sunscreen is a rare concept in India, so I've never used it. Girls have started using it. I guess I'd have to get one now, though it would seem too decadent to own it. But I can't play with the risk of cancer, I should get one.
sunscreen is the way, also UV sleeves are good if you dont want to buy a separate long sleeved shirt + they are easy to tuck away if you want to wear a short sleeved after riding
I have long sleeved summer weight jerseys. The sleeves are made out of the same stuff as UV sleeves. The right long sleeved jersey should be no different really.
UV sleeves are the best shit going. I first started using them golfing, and then kept using them for every outdoor activity that I do.
They keep you cooler in the heat, warmer when it’s cool, and I haven’t had a sunburn on my arms in years.
Dude I cycled through India and price of sunscreen was insane. I bought some "cheap" stuff (came to like $20 USD) that straight up did not work. The stuff that worked for me was almost twice the price (it was really nice though, better than the stuff I buy in the US haha)
This is not true. India sells a lot of sunscreens they manufacture themselves. You should be able to get one for $3 to $5.
I live in Germany and German drug store sunscreens are known to be incredibly affordable and good. Yet, if I could get my hands on some Indian sunscreen, I would prefer to use them over anything I can get here. Asian sunscreens are just so much better. People are of course aware about Japanese and Korean sunscreens but Indian sunscreens are really slept on.
Some of my favourites are [Shadow SPF 50](https://www.fixderma.com/products/shadow-sunscreen-for-dry-skin-spf-50-cream) ($4), [Lotus SPF 50](https://www.lotusherbals.com/products/lotus-safesun-ultrarx-matte-sunscreen-spf-50-pa) ($5.6), [VLCC SPF50](https://www.vlccproducts.com/de-tan-sunscreen-gel-cream/p) ($5.6). I understand this is still expensive for people who earn in rupees but you can get other brands that are more affordable. These are just the ones I have used and liked. And anyway, skin cancer will be more expensive.
We have melanin in our skin so generally we aren't too scared of the Sun. But with regards to aging and cancer, rich people have started using it. Unfortunately that means all lotions are über expensive.
Unfortunately, the melanin in skin doesn't do much. I think it can save you 10 minutes of exposure to the sun compared to lighter skintones. If you are exposing yourself to sun, better cover up!
Also, don't forget sunglasses for your eyes!
What is that like? How do you know you have sunburn? Am I sunburned right now? I don't feel burned, I don't feel anything. I just noticed yesterday that my arms were more tanned than usual.
If you can’t get Korean, try finding an Australian sunscreen. We have some of the strictest sunscreen controls around because of our high skin cancer rates
I think you got scammed. $20 dollars is ridiculous. Though I do agree that they’re better than many drugstore sunscreens you can get in the US. Here are some sunscreens I have used and liked- [Shadow SPF 50](https://www.fixderma.com/products/shadow-sunscreen-for-dry-skin-spf-50-cream) ($4), [Lotus SPF 50](https://www.lotusherbals.com/products/lotus-safesun-ultrarx-matte-sunscreen-spf-50-pa) ($5.6), [VLCC SPF50](https://www.vlccproducts.com/de-tan-sunscreen-gel-cream/p) ($5.6). You can definitely get even cheaper ones like [this pack of 4 SPF30 sunscreens](https://www.myntra.com/face-sunscreen/patanjali/patanjali-set-of-4-spf-30-sun-screen-cream-with-natural-moisturiser---50-g-each/26078978/buy) for $4.7.
Yeah, one of my regulars had melanoma from being a truck driver. It was crazy he had the whole left side of his face skin grafted and kinda looked like two face from Batman.
Long sleeve surf t-shirts are rated SPF50+ and work well while bicycling, very light and comfy. Decathlon sells their own brand (Olaian) very cheap, like 10€.
As a very pale & freckled person this is a completely different world view from me lol. Seriously not sure I could have done any outdoor activities as a child with out sunscreen.
So with my freckles it’s the majority of my melanin clumping together and leaving the rest of my skin with little to no natural sun protection. I got close to a second degree burn when I was 10 from being out all afternoon in a pool with out any sunscreen. I’ll definitely cover up when I can but playing sports or boating or really any warm outdoor activities in the sun I need sunscreen for any more than 30 -40 mins in the sun or I’ll get a burn.
The kicker is my body also really doesn’t handle hot temperatures well, so sweating and trying to reapply sunscreen can be a hard mix. Alcohol based spray sunscreens are amazing for me and a godsend. It’s always a gamble and even if I’m careful I expect to get at least some level of sunburn if I spend a day in the sun with out covering.
You beter rephrase that to : intelligent people started using it. It has nothing to to with them being girls, but everything with them being smart and protecting themselfs.
Use sunscreen for exposed skin (face/neck, arms/legs) or if possible sleeves.
In Europe it’s pretty normal to apply sunscreen every day during the sunny months. You can get face lotion that has sun protection so it’s a nobrainer.
It’s somewhat a similar scene across the border here in Pakistan. Thankfully it’s becoming more commonly accepted now but it’s always funny when folks assume you’re using sunscreen as if it’s whitening cream primarily and not to to protect from skin damage instead.
Sunscreen lasts about two hours and if you sweat a lot, maybe less. I have switched to sun sleeves and use sunscreen on legs and face, which often don't get as much sun exposure.
Skin cancer is no joke.
I use a sun visor like da brim lmfaooo and it’s for those chill zone 2 sort of rides. Note that asphalt reflectivity is still a thing so I still try to wear some but it helps.
If I’m riding in the direction of a sunset or sunrise I wear a naroo mask. Or lather up.
I don't get much sun on my face. Riding position and helmet overhang help keep the sun off my face. Same for legs, at least below the knees. I am considering seeing if I can get a visor for my helmet. I do not apply sunscreen above the eyes as it ends up mixing with sweat and getting in the eyes. On long rides, I apply more sunscreen to my face.
I get grossed out by the idea of smearing sunscreen on my face repeatedly while riding. That's how much I sweat. I guess I can try bringing more hand sanitizer and a sweat rag?
As somebody with localized hyperhidrosis who also burns easily, I can happily recommend an under-helmet SPF skullcap (actually reduces the feeling of heat on hot days) and these little sweat chammies - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B09XJFRT8F.
Not only do they clear off anything/everything gross on your face without hurting your skin, but you can literally wring them out and re-use them a second later. Then toss them in the washer/dryer and they're the same as new. The specific kind of sunblock that actually survives well in sweaty conditions is still a mystery to me though, sadly.
Between those and the disposable face wipes somebody mentioned below, unless you're specifically doing a ride/race where you can't stop at all, they should probably improve your quality of life.
Better off with long-sleeve jerseys or sun sleeves, in my opinion.
Safer and far more effective than sunscreen, especially on long rides, and cheaper in the long run anyway.
SPF 50 is your friend. I burn if I stand too close to a lightbulb, but I wore SPF 50 over the course of 3 full days in bright sun, and I didn't even turn any darker, let alone get a sunburn.
Reapply often. Cancer sucks.
Yes, SPF 50 is the way to go, SPF 30 in a pinch if the store is out of 50. Apply liberally and every few hours. Most people use too little. And be much more careful with sun exposure in the future! All skin tones are damaged by UV rays.
There is not a huge difference above 30 and do not pay extra for anything above 50.
The number sounds impressive, but SPF 30 means you are exposed to 1/30 or 3.33% of the UV radiation. SPF 50 means you are exposed to 1/50 or 2% of the UV. You get the idea.
SPF = Sun protection factor
The higher the SPF the more of the suns energy it blocks. SPF 50 sunscreen is pretty strong and will definitely stop this from happening in the future.
SPF30 is all you need. Higher levels are only very marginally better and much more expensive.
30 filters out 97% of UV, 50 is 98% and higher levels aren't worth the price.
Edit: from seeing another comment about how expensive sunscreen is in India, some sleeves would probably be best. Although now I'm thinking about opening a sunscreen biz in India.
I’d recommend sunscreen but particularly a sports one thats usually alcohol based. Won’t block your pours so you can still sweat.
Any sunscreen is great though
Takes one burn to remember this lesson for the rest of your life.
Most smart watches allow the option to see UV Index at the watch face. I always leave it on.
> The water acts like a magnifying glass.
No it does not. At least if you move you should at most receive exactly the same amount of light energy per m² of exposed skin as on land.
they make sun screen lotion that specially formulated for cyclists. it actually increases your aerodyna... NAHHHHH who am i kidding its just regular sunblock
Rule #7 // Tan lines should be cultivated and kept razor sharp.Under no circumstances should one be rolling up their sleeves or shorts in an effort to somehow diminish one’s tan lines. Sleeveless jerseys are
Yeah, you wanna get used to sunscreen if you're riding during the day for health reasons; and also get used to look like your body was assembled with pieces of different bodies in terms of aesthetics.
Cyclist skin tone has a certain charm on its own. It's a conversation starter if nothing else.
It's actually very common in India to have tanned appendages but fair torsos so I don't really look different right now. I had tanned arms anyway but yesterday they got tanned even harder. Tan is rarely noticeable.
Agreed - these are reasonable (for Assos) https://www.assos.com/us/arm-protector-188424.html?nbt=nb%3Aadwords%3Ax%3A20027585667%3A%3A&nb_adtype=pla&nb_kwd=&nb_ti=&nb_mi=116778243&nb_pc=online&nb_pi=P13.80.834.58.I&nb_ppi=&nb_placement=&nb_li_ms=&nb_lp_ms=&nb_fii=&nb_ap=&nb_mt=&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADLdsoXYN6ls9biUKiqKmzEFmrubb&gclid=EAIaIQobChMImbi5lM_vhgMVe1tHAR3SWQGjEAQYASABEgJM0fD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Sleeveless jerseys are under no circumstances to be employed.
Clouds are a terrible sunscreen, they don't really block the UV light.
No sleeves are needed, just use a proper sunscreen lotion, and lots of it. You need this for your face, neck and legs anyway.
Clouds can increase burning. They cut some spectrum but sometimes not the rays that burn you, so ironically they reduce your skin’s ability to sense the need to “tan” and you get more burnt.
Titanium dioxide sunscreen is what you need. Long sleeves won’t cover your face or your legs. Number one skin cancer spots are nose and ears.
Buy sun sleeves/arm screens/coolers. I ride all summer with them. Much nicer than using sunscreen and they actually keep you cool. If you buy black ones, make sure they’re treated with Coldblack, which reflects sun very well.
exact same thing happened to me. I started using spf 50 sunscreen on all the sun exposed parts of my body and i didn’t have to deal with unwanted tanning and sunburns anymore. Just remember to periodically apply sunscreen if you are outside for long periods of time.
I'm in the desert too and always ride with full sleeves for this reason. We are doing the RagBrai next month and my wife is refusing to even wear short sleeves, so I bought some sunscreen and I might work on my tan as well...
I got the same thing going on. I put on Neutrogena spray on sun screen and roll up my sleeves. It's great and when I get to work I don't smell like sun screen.
I'm into my third year of riding and my gf finally got me to wear SPF regularly. I also got a little bottle that I keep in my snack bag to reapply at longer rides
I wore a sleeveless yersey for a 200k ride in August once after only having used normal jerseys for all my riding history. My shoulders and the area around them burnt so bad that the tan line was visible for months. Dumb move.
No I go out riding everyday, but today was the longest I was under the Sun in a long time. I am generally only under the Sun for half an hour in the morning.
I live in Vegas, and was a daily commuter, 30ish miles a day, 50+ casual rides on the weekend.
SOLID fucking straight line tan. I then wised up and got UV arm sleeves.
it might still be cheaper if you order online, or you could make a homemade mineral sunscreen (with zinc oxide?). I personally haven't done that, but they don't absorb into the skin like the chemical ones, hence they leave a white/yellowish fade
I've been riding in a long sleeve sun/rash shirt (spf50) from Academy for $13-20. A lot cheaper, better, more sun resistant, and comfortable than a jersey. Mine has a hood too if I need it for cold or rain, or sun. See

Sun sleeves. Pearl Izumi makes them so do a few other brands. I have a few pairs of white Pearl Izumi that I always use. They are actually cooler than bare skin because they wick away moisture and cool down the skin. They are SPF 50 and you don’t have to worry about reapplying. I have a friend who had a melanoma scare who also got them for his legs as well. I just use them for my arms.
I haven't gotten burned this year but the difference between my shoulders and forearms are about the same as yours. They'll even out somewhat over the winter.
Lots of sunscreen advocates in the comments and I love that! I will say though long sleeves are awesome. I'm a pasty guy and it saves a lot of time to just wear sleeves vs sunscreen especially if you use sunscreen correctly and reapply every couple of hours. Wearing sun protective clothing is more effective and will save you time and money especially because it sounds like sunscreen is expensive and hard to come by where you live
>I realise now why professional cyclists are all geared up
They are all geared up because a cycle offers zero crash protection and covering up will reduce the gravel / road scrapes.
Turned into a lobster last year sailing in the clouds without sunscreen.
Clouds don’t always lower the UV index. Wear sunscreen for anything outside over 20min.
Literally, my hands all day every day! Few years back I got a very bad sun tan cuz I chose to ride my bike during the summer heat - completely discolored my hands and from then on I've suffered 2 sunburns and 1 MAJOR one that caused me extreme itching and completely dried up my skin.
Lesson learned : I now use an SPF 50 silicon-based sunscreen that isn't sticky and is of my liking. Other store grade sunscreens didn't work for me and caused my hands to burn, so it's best to consult a medical professional if you are struggling with an extreme level of sun damage.
+ If you apply too little, that would be of no use, and if you apply too much, you waste product so... 🤷
Clouds do not prevent UV light from touching your skin. You'll still get burned. Sunscreen every day is the only way. Or wear something that has UV protection built in. Some material will still let UV light through.
I've worn sunscreen every time I know I'm going to be in the sun ,everybody else I know got burnt this summer ,and I've been in the sun the most plain and simple sunscreen works ,yet the prices of sunscreen have been B.S .
That's why it's important to ride more early in the season so you build a base layer and don't get burned

if you dont want to break the bank on (biking cloths) Hanes makes their "Cool Dry" long sleeve shirts. they have a built in SPF 40 rating and are very inexpensive (in the US).
I have ad a few that are on their third year and other then a few stanes and some minor stretching they hold up very well.

Jesus... I get why it's a rare concept.

They don’t make it locally and it’s rarely used. High prices due to the cost to import and IMO somewhat to exploit the tourists.

No. My skin is the same, just darker than usual.

Well I thought you were a Swede living in Florida or something

actually, follow rule #7 and you'll be fine. https://www.velominati.com
How is sunscreen so rare yet skin whitening is so common??
I think most skin whitening creams just have white pigment in an emulsion, so they're cheap. The concept is also easier to understand.
So are deodorants, apparently...
Sunscreen lasts about two hours and if you sweat a lot, maybe less. I have switched to sun sleeves and use sunscreen on legs and face, which often don't get as much sun exposure. Skin cancer is no joke.

There is sweat resistent sunscreen. And if you buy the right one it will last much longer, 8+ hours.
Thanks, I focused on uva and uvb effectiveness.
P30. Lasts 12h with sweat. Accept no subs.
Searching for that but kinda failing. Is the brand Riemann?
Yep.
Better off with long-sleeve jerseys or sun sleeves, in my opinion. Safer and far more effective than sunscreen, especially on long rides, and cheaper in the long run anyway.
Sun block will block the harmful rays. You will still tan lol.
With SPF 50, only 2% of rays are still able to penetrate your skin. Yes, you will "tan", but will do so at a significantly slower rate.
Ha, as an Australian this immediately came to mind. Full sleeves are awful in the heat, in my opinion.
There is no sunscreen less, maybe latex paint, that will eliminate tan lines.
I don't really care about tan lines. I just don't want sunburn
That would be too simple
Apply sun cream spf 50. It's must have at least on arms in summer.
Okay, are there different spf available?
SPF 50 is your friend. I burn if I stand too close to a lightbulb, but I wore SPF 50 over the course of 3 full days in bright sun, and I didn't even turn any darker, let alone get a sunburn. Reapply often. Cancer sucks.

Sure, let me know if you need any help with your business if you do start up.
I go straight SPF100, but it gets 120+ degrees out here and the sun wants to murder you. I'm also a pale ginger.
I’d recommend sunscreen but particularly a sports one thats usually alcohol based. Won’t block your pours so you can still sweat. Any sunscreen is great though
Interesting, thanks.
You can still get burnt through the clouds
Worst sunburn I've had was overcast in winter snowboarding.
It’s worrying how few people realise this!
Takes one burn to remember this lesson for the rest of your life. Most smart watches allow the option to see UV Index at the watch face. I always leave it on.

Skin is precious! don’t abuse it in the sun. I wear sun cream and full length jerseys!
Learned the lesson today
Skin cancer surgery is rough (six and counting, three on arms). I have 50+ SPF cycling jersies I wear now.
Use sunscreen
UV sleeves are amazing. No more stopping every 80 minutes to reapply sunscreen and somehow it makes my arms just feel cool all the time.

Agreed - these are reasonable (for Assos) https://www.assos.com/us/arm-protector-188424.html?nbt=nb%3Aadwords%3Ax%3A20027585667%3A%3A&nb_adtype=pla&nb_kwd=&nb_ti=&nb_mi=116778243&nb_pc=online&nb_pi=P13.80.834.58.I&nb_ppi=&nb_placement=&nb_li_ms=&nb_lp_ms=&nb_fii=&nb_ap=&nb_mt=&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADLdsoXYN6ls9biUKiqKmzEFmrubb&gclid=EAIaIQobChMImbi5lM_vhgMVe1tHAR3SWQGjEAQYASABEgJM0fD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Nice recommendation, i like that it is not as overpriced as other products in Assos.
Cooling arm sleeves are so underrated for hiking and biking. They make such a difference for me, and I don't have to worry about reapplying sunscreen.
Sunscreen exists.
Or, you know, sunscreen.
That’s a quality farmers tan right there
Lesson learned, ride naked.
RULE #7 // Tan lines should be cultivated and kept razor sharp.Under no circumstances should one be rolling up their sleeves or shorts in an effort to somehow diminish one’s [tan lines](http://velominati.com/content/Photos/own%20your%20guns.jpg). Sleeveless jerseys are under no circumstances to be employed.
This is the way.
One of the top rules of cycling etiquette. "Keep the tan lines sharp!” LOL.
Lulz I stick factor 30 on my arms before i ride to work (30 mins). Not worth risking it
As a fellow Indian my arms have been like this most of my life 😅.
Welcome, fellow tractor driver.
Clouds are a terrible sunscreen, they don't really block the UV light. No sleeves are needed, just use a proper sunscreen lotion, and lots of it. You need this for your face, neck and legs anyway.
Sunscreen. I just spent over 4 hours in the blazing sun in short sleeves, it's like I never went out at all.
Or sunscreen.
I am a firm believer in full sleeves in summer for this exact reason. Skin cancer sucks and longer sleeves are cheaper than sunscreen
My tan lines are a badge of honor and I will ruthlessly maintain them
Clouds can increase burning.
Or sunscreen, or just have a tan line
Counterpoint: wear less sleeve.
Sun sleeves are a great way to go, too.
Hey we're twins!
You can also try sunscreen
My sharp, well-cultivated tan lines are my badge of honor.
Tan lines should be cultivated and kept razor sharp.
I'm in the desert too and always ride with full sleeves for this reason. We are doing the RagBrai next month and my wife is refusing to even wear short sleeves, so I bought some sunscreen and I might work on my tan as well...
I go sleeveless with my Italian ass
As a construction worker for 20 years you'll get used to it lol
To the long sleeves or the tan?
Tan lines are badges of honor.
Or enjoy your cyclist tan...
Concerned about the aging and cancer
Or you know, sunscreen like any normal person with a brain
Profesional cyclists doesn’t wear short sleeves? You need to embrace your tanlines if you’re to ride outside, its impossible to avoid them.
I think he's probably more concerned about skin cancer than tanlines. (As he should be)
Yes
They can, I was talking about those shiny glasses they wear.
I got the same thing going on. I put on Neutrogena spray on sun screen and roll up my sleeves. It's great and when I get to work I don't smell like sun screen.
lmao sometimes i wear basketball shooters sleeves with a tank jersey to even it out when it unexpectedly gets sunny
I wear fingerless gel gloves year round. My arms are tanned down to my wrist.
YIPE
Sir, your two-part tan is a mark of distinction. Wear it proudly. (And next time use 50 SPF sunscreen.)
Dumb move.
first time out in the good old sun? not good! protection is a great idea
No I go out riding everyday, but today was the longest I was under the Sun in a long time. I am generally only under the Sun for half an hour in the morning.
Didn't Nick Cave write a song about you?
Love a good T-shirt tan!
Also, you don’t have a sharp tan line like me.
Mine are the same today, now I've been named Squashie at work 😂
For how long were you out today?
I've been riding in a long sleeve sun/rash shirt (spf50) from Academy for $13-20. A lot cheaper, better, more sun resistant, and comfortable than a jersey. Mine has a hood too if I need it for cold or rain, or sun. It's called a farmers tan in America. It's a sure fire sign that spring is here, for me at least.
You should see the middle of my thigh. You can tell where my bibs end for sure.
Or ride the bike exclusively at night
I like that my fingers are brown from the knuckles to the tips but the rest of my hands are white. Good look s/
Why people acting like a tan is a bad thing 😂
I haven't gotten burned this year but the difference between my shoulders and forearms are about the same as yours. They'll even out somewhat over the winter.
I always ride in long sleeves because I hate sun screen. Also my legs are too fat and my pants always cut above my knees :/
In my hometown , we call it the bricklayer tint
Nah, I don't have tattoos so the lines are my seasonal statement
Oh yeah your credit score just went down🤣🤣🤣
Lots of sunscreen advocates in the comments and I love that!
Sunscreen and sunglasses
Is today the first time you’ve been in the sun?
Or sunblock?
I have sensitive skin and it's infuriatingly hard to find good long sleeve summer jerseys. Doesn't everyone want to protect their skin wtf
If only they made something you could apply to your skin, to screen it...from the sun.
If only you could simply wear a garment instead of lotioning up every hour like a salamander
UV penetrates clouds fyi. UV sleeves, even cheap Chinesium ones work fine and are much cheaper than cancer 😊
Thats just going to be a farmers tan by the end of the year

>I realise now why professional cyclists are all geared up They are all geared up because a cycle offers zero crash protection and covering up will reduce the gravel / road scrapes.
How long does it take to recover from this tanning? Given that you start use sunscreen and arm sleeves
uv penetrates clouds, believe me, mate.
Suncreen?
Bacon sandwich anyone? That’s gonna hurt mate, get a lot of aloe after sun.
Nah, just sunscreen. :)
https://preview.redd.it/2ucteku1ga8d1.jpeg?width=2296&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c33fd250e5859058fc9d2813e0d25c35aa94a544 Haha. Farmer's tans lang yan
Jesus
Why? Sun is good for you.. Sunscreen on the other hand, causes all kind of fuckery on your skin.. S
Baz Luhrmann would like a word.
Clouds do not prevent UV light from touching your skin. You'll still get burned. Sunscreen every day is the only way. Or wear something that has UV protection built in. Some material will still let UV light through.
if only they invented some lotion that would block sun... skin cancer be gone! si-fi dreams i know.
Or wear your well earned tan lines like a man. While your at it, get a tighter fitting jersey, make them lines laser etched.
Any tanlines on your fingers from wearing cycling gloves??
I wasn't wearing any gloves. Why do we need cycling gloves? And my arms were already tanned, they just got more tanned
Wear no sleeves to even it out
I've worn sunscreen every time I know I'm going to be in the sun ,everybody else I know got burnt this summer ,and I've been in the sun the most plain and simple sunscreen works ,yet the prices of sunscreen have been B.S .
That's why it's important to ride more early in the season so you build a base layer and don't get burned https://preview.redd.it/eko0hqygmc8d1.jpeg?width=1638&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b24d6e1330a59602aa5e816a60730df713682e79
if you dont want to break the bank on (biking cloths) Hanes makes their "Cool Dry" long sleeve shirts. they have a built in SPF 40 rating and are very inexpensive (in the US). I have ad a few that are on their third year and other then a few stanes and some minor stretching they hold up very well. https://www.hanes.com/hanes-mens-long-sleeve-t-shirt-24270.html
Rule #7 would like a word...
If you aren't worried about going Aero. Fishing shirts are a lightweight, breathable, and UV blocking. Often cheaper than cycling kit too.
You're northern Brazilian now, welcome to the club.
