Well first off good job using what you have! It looks like you need to increase your storage capacity with more bags.A handlebar bag, and frame bag would be awesome. I also recommend a more compact pad. You could get an inflatable one. Where is all of your food going for three days?

Accomplished-Quiet-8

There will be a lot of towns and villages along the route. Idea is to make occasional stops at the local grocery stores

loudan32

Take a small folding backpack that you can use for groceries at the end of the day. You seem to be very limited in storage.

Cool-Newspaper-1

That’s a good plan. It’s good to always have something on you, but if you’re passing through a lot of villages anyway, you don’t need too much

Late-Mechanic-7523

This is the way.

threepin-pilot

your frame cries out for a frame bag That saddle bag looks super long - doesn't it sway a bunch? Agree with others about getting an inflatable pad

buck38913014

If you are worried about frame rub, 3M tape is pretty good for covering the frame and protecting. :-). There are frame tapes put there but they are pretty expensive for what it is

vlad_kirillovskiy

You can take tent poles out and fix them to a top tube. This way less chance of damage and also you can fold a tent smaller.

Thank you all for advice, I looked around local bike shops, and decided to get a [handlebar bag](https://www.velonova.lt/sks-explorer-exp-barbag-krepsys-ant-vairo-9-l-8827-4)and a frame bag.

That looks like it will sway a lot and rub the back of your butt. If its rubbing, remember a minor annoyance riding around the block can turn into a real pain when you're on day 3. How stiff is the pad when its folded like that? Might be better off strapped to the bottom of the saddlebag.

Accomplished-Quiet-8

Great advice, thank you!

What bike is this

Accomplished-Quiet-8

Trek checkpoint ALR 5

Late-Mechanic-7523

Doesnt the checkpoint have mounts for racks? That would make your life much easyer.

Forest-onion

Nice to see a Checkpoint in the wild! I've got the one for one year earlier than your version, it still is my bikrpaxking/daily commute bike

On my first camping trip i had my tent inside a trash bag for waterproofing and then strapped it to the handlebars like you. The problem was that friction and dust melted through the plastic bag, the tent bag and made a hole on the bottom of the tent. Also messed up the paint on the head tube pretty badly. So i recommend using a lot of tape to protect the paint and try to use a bag with less friction, or some protective layer there. Heres my post about it. https://www.reddit.com/r/bikepacking/comments/157kms7/first_9day_bikepacking_tour_with_budget_kit_needs/ For the next trip I'm going to try the handle bar bag from decathlon. I got just the bag without the harness and will attach still with straps. It's a very cheap bag but looks super tough.

notadoctoriguess

I have a flat bar bike so YMMV. My solution to frame rub/hose bending on my handlebar bag is a piece of 1/4” aluminium rod which I bent (by hand) so that it goes from under the handlebar bag, over the handlebar, under the stem, back over the handlebar, then back under the bag. It very effectively holds the bag away from the bike. If you cover the parts that run over the bars and under the stem with heat shrink, it’s pretty good at not damaging anything.

planetawylie

My setup https://imgur.com/gallery/72nWYua I’ve since put a rack on the front, thru axle based (old man mountain elkhorn). Straps are your friend. The front bag can be held off the front paintwork using a variety of different products or just grab an old bike computer mount and bolt it on facing down and it will push the bag out of the way. I didn’t take the orange bag … it’s a seat.

Without something stiff to keep them off your headtube, most handlebar bags will result in some paint rub. Besides a small rack or something else to keep it off, the next best solution is 3M tape or similar. With your tent I'd recommend a cheap dry bag and some rubber straps to keep it securely on the bars for as low cost as possible Depending on the riding, the dry bag might end up with a hole or two, but that's better than your tent bag or worse yet the tent itself ending up with them. If you can't get the tent in a dry bag, strap the poles to your top-tube. As for that saddle-bag... synch it down as much as you can. It is huge and very long. That's going to want to sway around which can lead to some unpleasant bike handling.

dantegreen8

You mentioned having limited experience in bikepacking. Have you ridden at all with your set-up yet or just going to wing it? I ask because 360 kms in 3 days is a good amount of riding. It'll be some hours in the saddle beyond stopping for breaks, readjusting, and what not.

What about your wife? You're only as fast as the person you're riding with.

Accomplished-Quiet-8

My wife also ride with me, but it causes some concern to me :) that’s the reason why I want to put the heaviest things on my bike

Check out lost Dots “bikes of the xx”. For races they often photo peoples bikes and their set ups. https://dotwatcher.cc/feature/bikes-of-transpyrenees-2022

readditerdremz

yo is that a trek marlin gen 5? sorry if im off topic, i have the same bike but with suspension fork but you don't. did you replace the OG one with one with no suspensions? wish you a great trip anyway, i'm new to this but feel like a 360km trip gonna be super fun (and healthy!)

Accomplished-Quiet-8

No, it’s trek checkpoint ALR 5

Realistic-Actuator36

Are you in the Uk? If so Alpkit have a great 20lt bag for about £20 which fits on the front bars. I carry tent and sleeping gear in it inc pad. Check what your taking? 3 days you won’t need much. I took a 13lt saddle bag on a 6 day trip and took to many clothes.

[deleted]

Did you try to ride with it? The saddle bag must have some major movement. Next time I would probably buy rear rack for more stable storage.

Yeah your saddle bag will sway alot esp if your doing any up hill. Seems a bit over packed too.. Someone mentioned a frame bag. This could spread the load a bit more
