Pennant-winged Nightjar, they look weird as hell (in a good way).

haha that's what I always think, although the name is actually based on a different kind of standard: [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/War\_flag](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_flag)
Here's a video of a pennant-winged nightjar in flight:
[https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Dkc5SRWFzm4&pp=ygUfU3RhbmRhcmQgd2luZ2VkIG5pZ2h0amFyIGZseWluZw%3D%3D](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Dkc5SRWFzm4&pp=ygUfU3RhbmRhcmQgd2luZ2VkIG5pZ2h0amFyIGZseWluZw%3D%3D)
Honestly I don't know much about it either. eBird says "*Breeding males have extraordinary “pennants” growing out of their wings.*"
I feel like we overlook nightjars/nighthawks a lot because they seem to be 'just a brown bird on the ground'. Turns out they have another bizzare-looking species; Standard-winged Nightjar.
Edit: Ooops, OP has posted too. Let me delete my pic.
Another one; Long-trained Nightjar.

I'll start.

Cream-colored Woodpecker. Like a ripoff cockatoo pokémon.
lol, yes AI birds are a problem. I'd never though, that's one of the reasons I included the name, so people could research. From Audubon's Nicholas Lund, the Birdist: [https://slate.com/technology/2023/12/ai-generated-birds-santa-cardinal.html](https://slate.com/technology/2023/12/ai-generated-birds-santa-cardinal.html)
I’ve never seen this bird before and I totally get why you want to see this bird. It is absolutely gorgeous!!!! Great choice! I would like to see a Harpy Eagle in person. I would imagine it’s a majestic bird in person.
Yes. Highly majestic.
https://preview.redd.it/eq4emkzml69d1.png?width=196&format=png&auto=webp&s=c4fd277d326574696d2eb4dbb55cc06f5fa383ad
I really love them too though!
Okay I've got another one. Hear me out. Have you guys heard of the Orange Dove? They belong to the very colorful "fruit doves" group. And no, it's not a domesticated species.
https://preview.redd.it/upmvoleq759d1.png?width=900&format=png&auto=webp&s=f0fec68791bad2c65c378fba9d2e3414a73375f2
Its closest relative, Golden Fruit Dove, looks just as bizarre (and cute)

Love those two. Can’t forget the Pink-headed Fruit Dove.

OMG how could I forget the Whistling Fruit Dove? These colors are just so wrong for a pigeon.

Many people forget or never know that pigeons are just as colorful as parrots!
The next few replies are my collection of pigeon faves:

Look at this!
edit: another user already put this species, but I'm keeping the extra photo anyway :)
And the dodo's closest living relative:

Doves are great!! How about this badass (but also pretty!) Luzon Bleeding Heart Dove?
i like how it looks like it's called a fruit dove as in "a cross between a fruit and a dove", and how each successive reply to this comment just cements it. like excuse me these are not birds these are a persimmon, a durian, and a passionfruit...

Can't really say with confidence that it's widely unknown, but I would love the [I'iwi](https://ebird.org/species/iiwi) to get some love and conservation help.
Absolutely stunning in person, and tragic that it's just another endemic Hawaiian bird that is declining.
For those who don't wanna have to click the link

Yes, one of Hawaii's last birds with a significant curved bill. I love curved bills.

And 😭: [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaii\_mamo](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaii_mamo)
Honestly just scrolling right here: [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_birds\_of\_Hawaii#Finches,\_euphonias,\_and\_allies](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_birds_of_Hawaii#Finches,_euphonias,_and_allies) is so stressful 😫
EX meaning extinct and CR meaning critically endangered and often unknown if extinct
It makes me sick. I saw that in 2023 another several dozen endemic Hawaiian birds were declared extinct, and it just breaks my heart.
I saw the I'iwi with my wife on Maui a few years ago on our honeymoon. I so badly wanted to see one and I'm so damn lucky to have it on my life list.
I really, really, \*really\* hope the I'iwi can continue to be on life lists.
Hawaii's very own national bird almost became extinct, the Nene, a goose.
This is the last call of the last known Kaua'i ō'ō, calling to nothing:
[https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=x2KH5AoyeBc&pp=ygUWbGFzdCBjYWxsIG9mIHRoZSBrYXVhaQ%3D%3D](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=x2KH5AoyeBc&pp=ygUWbGFzdCBjYWxsIG9mIHRoZSBrYXVhaQ%3D%3D)
This is why I hate feral cats, invasive species, avian flu, and Europeans colonizing every island literally ever from like 1400-1900.
There's like less than ten birds extinct in the wild (as in still living in captivity), and one of them is Hawaii's very own - crow.
I don't know if I should be happy or sad about that.
Either way, I don't think Hawaii would be a very relaxing vacation location for me. I'd still really want to go though.
And to think it’s quite literally calling out “I’m right here, where are you?” expecting the same response from somewhere else, but that response never came…it’s absolutely fucking heartbreaking.
Thank you for sharing these and thank you for being educated and informed. If more people simply *knew* then the fate of all of these beautiful creatures might have been different, and all the more reason to make that much more of an impact to save the ones we have left, like the I’iwi.
Yes. I hate to say it but I really hope we can cut our losses and move forward with Hawaii, so that it's not just a constant struggle for the existing birds (and no doubt other wildlife). I'd love to see Hawaii become a wildlife haven like it used to be, and not go the way of Guam's "Silent Forests."
And can we please stop billionaires from removing large swaths of the rare remaining habitat to make mansions? Thanks.
People see Hawaii as a classic "tropical destination" where you just relax on the beach and at your resort, but it also has so much wildlife that needs protected (as well as the Hawaiian people whose homes are being taken by other people moving there).
We really need to rethink Hawaii and our priorities. 🐧✨
so glad i got to see some in december since the future of hawaiian honeycreepers looks grim, though the I’iwi is actually doing the best out of the remaining species!

Still really want to see one here.
Yeah. Nut hatch is a better descriptor than warbler.
I only ever see them when I stare out the window for an excessively long time and notice flying tree bark.
Once I watched 3 do little back flips off the tree to catch a bug and land back on the truck.
CREEPER BACKFLIPS? AND YOU SAW THREE OF THEM? need
Also yes, treecreepers are related to nuthatches! Woodcreepers aren't though. The brown creeper is a treecreeper.
It was really special. They would hop up about a foot up the trunk, do a little back loop and land back at the base and hop back up. Complete with little squeaks.
I had to rescue one that was hurt on the sidewalk outside my office tower a few months ago. It was the cutest little guy. I hope he did well at the bird rescue!
The African Finfoot. This thing can’t decide if it wants to be a duck or a heron 😭

i’m glad that people in canada don’t know about [secretary birds](https://ebird.org/species/secret2/ZA-NW) but obviously in places like Sudan and South Africa, they’re popular enough to be on the country’s Coat of Arms
That’s so sad. I’ve seen 3 but at the San Diego zoo. I wish I had the scientific smarts to work with zoologists to help repopulate them/keep them safe. For now, im just a spectator
Bobolinks.
They sound like little droids, they have a powdered wig, and the name is fun to say. What more could you want?

This guy is showing off for the ladies🤣🤣🙄🤣🤣
Like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Southern white-crowned shrike looks very much like a chickadee, but is evil - impales their prey on thorns, leaves them there for days until they are dead. These birds are territorial and the males have little contests to see who can keep the most impaled foods in their territory.
Piggybacking off your comment to share the long-tailed tit, sometimes referred to as a "flying lollipop."

Limpkins. You hear them but rarely see them. Their call sounds like something you hear in a jungle movie. I saw two in my backyard and was really thrilled to see them.
Likely widely known in the USA but else where I could see it being overlooked. Timber Doodle or Woodcock. Reddit messed my post up but I recommend reading up on them. They evolved from shorebirds and became forest birds. They also have a silly mating ritual and perpetually walk to the beat of funckadelic tunes.

i am never not thinking about satin [bowerbirds](https://blog.nature.org/2021/01/04/bowerbirds-meet-the-bird-worlds-kleptomaniac-love-architects/) & their obsessive monochromatic nest decorations

Red-Crested Turaco!
If you want to learn more about them and other turacos, I was on the podcast [Just The Zoo of Us!](https://maximumfun.org/episodes/just-the-zoo-of-us/130-turacos-w-aeralyn-rudnick/)
Here's a video if anyone's interested. I'd recommend watching the entire thing, but if you want to see the feeding, go to around 5:00 and probably watch the rest (like 2 mins 30 secs maybe).

Definitely the Potoo birds (they’re related to nightjars and frogmouths, and those also deserve so much more attention). The Great Potoo (the horrifying looking one) gets the most attention for being spooky (huge all black eyes), whereas the Andean Potoo (often confused with Northern and Common Potoo) gets the most attention for being the cute ones with the big ole yellow eyes. The other Potoos hardly ever get talked about tho… shoutout to my favorite round fluffy guys, the Rufous Potoos

While not a vibrant colored bird I still like the Razorbill auk. It's a monogamous bird species that spends much of its time floating in the North Atlantic Ocean. They are like Puffins by the way in that the live in the same areas but they don't have the color Puffins do with their beek. However I am a bit biased in the fact I went to see the birds of the coast of Maine a few weeks ago.

Curl-crested aracari! they’re in the toucan family, and have curly black feathers on the tops of their heads. zoom in, looks like jerry curls lol. the local zoo just got one of these guys and he’s super cute.
Obsessed with Ovenbirds. They are soooo cute and I think their name is funny.

Vulturine Guineafowl.
Sometimes known as the Vulturine Parrot, and for good reason:

DISCLAIMER: CHICKADEES ARE ONLY KNOWN AS CHICKADEES IN NORTH AMERICA MOSTLY, AND IN THE REST OF THE WORLD, ARE REFERRED TO AS "TITS."
With that out of the way, here's the fanciest chickadee around, the Yellow Tit:

Now black-capped chickadees are boring, and even Europe's great and blue tits.
Boring?! If you observe them they are far from boring. In my area if you disturb the nature and lull the noises chickadees are always 1st to start back up.

Saw one for the first time last year when a bunch were blown onshore by a nasty storm (I’m in Maine, USA). Wife came home from a run and said she saw a small penguin in someone’s yard. Went and got it and took it to a bird rehabber. Such an awesome bird.

Here it is! In fact related to Anatidae (ducks, geese, swans) rather than game birds.
Since the Cream-colored Woodpecker was a hit, here's more from the same genus, Celeus.

Blond-crested woodpecker
It's probably a very well known bird, but I always thought that the golden pheasant was as if it was coloured by a child with a very limited understanding of colour theory and only vibrant felt tips at their disposal but in the most endearing way.
Other pick being the black billed capercaillie. Goth grouse with red eyeliner.

Western Tragopan, I’ve only seen research skins but the colors are understated in this picture.
Maybe not unknown, but the violet-backed starling needs more appreciation.

The Bleeding-Heart Dove. Or if you prefer the Dutch name: The Dagger-Stab Pigeon. (The bird is not a Dutch bird at all btw, it’s just that I am).
I love the Lyrebirds. They are just so fun. [https://youtu.be/mSB71jNq-yQ?si=qcMseWGaKIcUJBzh&t=10](https://youtu.be/mSB71jNq-yQ?si=qcMseWGaKIcUJBzh&t=10)

Red whiskered Bulbul I used to get this on my balcony in India, it is beautiful and loves eating fruits.
I saw a grebe for the first time in the wild last year while one was flying over a pond and my reaction was just like, "...what on God's green earth was that??"
They're actually a pretty interesting group of bird species. They are foot propelled diving birds but are more closely related to flamingos than loons. They have weirdly lobed feet and also they eat their own feathers for some reason.
https://preview.redd.it/iv34ri26e99d1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=56f02d9d8ecffd88d4fb560bae020979eed81970
Montezuma oropendola. They're the largest blackbird and basically giant orioles. They build a huge hanging nest and their call sounds like an arcade game or fancy laser gun. Oropendolas have their own cowbird, the giant cowbird, which is also the largest cowbird. Also oropendolas look like they have a traffic cone for a beak.

Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. Unknown but spectacular, pointing it out bc it can actually be found in a decent chunk of the United States. Has a wickedly long scissor-tail and is found in the southern Great Plains. It’s also the state bird of Oklahoma (and on their quarters).
Tooth-billed pigeon, only species in its genus, genetically close to the dodo, and national bird of Samoa. Neither a video of it nor great fotos are available.
Pennant-winged Nightjar, they look weird as hell (in a good way). https://preview.redd.it/wys8stbaw49d1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=16b7284f9baa47fc7d41389409b4f6260adb1d1e

I'm glad someone brought up the Caprimulgidae. I think they could be the next narwhals in pop culture. So gloriously weird.
Yes, I love them!
There's nothing standard about those wings, wow.
haha that's what I always think, although the name is actually based on a different kind of standard: [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/War\_flag](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_flag)
This. Standard here means banner.
How do they fly with those strange feathers? Is it only the males who have those strange butterfly looking wing shape?
Here's a video of a pennant-winged nightjar in flight: [https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Dkc5SRWFzm4&pp=ygUfU3RhbmRhcmQgd2luZ2VkIG5pZ2h0amFyIGZseWluZw%3D%3D](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Dkc5SRWFzm4&pp=ygUfU3RhbmRhcmQgd2luZ2VkIG5pZ2h0amFyIGZseWluZw%3D%3D)
Holy crap that looks crazy! If I didn't know about the species, I would freak out if I saw it in real life.
Yes, it's so cool though!
It looks like a giant butterfly!
Birderfly - say it out loud
I would immediately think that was a bat flying around.
Honestly I don't know much about it either. eBird says "*Breeding males have extraordinary “pennants” growing out of their wings.*" I feel like we overlook nightjars/nighthawks a lot because they seem to be 'just a brown bird on the ground'. Turns out they have another bizzare-looking species; Standard-winged Nightjar. Edit: Ooops, OP has posted too. Let me delete my pic.
Another one; Long-trained Nightjar. https://preview.redd.it/zo6nj7c3359d1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=ab12202e9b78413c5212067637ffa63133660346
Or in layman's terms, the Nocturnal Plier-Bird
Why delete the photo? But I think it’s only males who have those for nuptial parade. Otherwise, it’s not very practical for efficient flight.
THE MORE PICTURES THE BETTER 🙏🙏🙏 /hj
Magnets how do they work?
All nightjars are funky and awesome!
I saw one of these in Rwanda!!!!!
I have never run to google so fast
I'll start. https://preview.redd.it/ju0qoze4u49d1.png?width=474&format=png&auto=webp&s=3717b1eff9858d47f0a3708c7e85b69545bdb7cc Cream-colored Woodpecker. Like a ripoff cockatoo pokémon.
Damn it’s beautiful
I haven't actually looked at many woodpecker species so I'm excited for whenever I do to see what I'll find!
Its always interesting to find new species
If pikachu and zapdos had a baby
Lol it's like there's a pokémon for everything
I'll be damned. I was prepared to call ai bluff. How beautiful 😍
lol, yes AI birds are a problem. I'd never though, that's one of the reasons I included the name, so people could research. I’ve never seen this bird before and I totally get why you want to see this bird. It is absolutely gorgeous!!!! Great choice! I would like to see a Harpy Eagle in person. I would imagine it’s a majestic bird in person.
Yes. Highly majestic. https://preview.redd.it/eq4emkzml69d1.png?width=196&format=png&auto=webp&s=c4fd277d326574696d2eb4dbb55cc06f5fa383ad I really love them too though!

Okay yeah that one is really cool Must've gone to a barber that was their enemy 😈 edit: birber
My favorite edit of the day.
OBSESSED WITH THEIR SOUNDS
Why does it look like a scaled down black vulture with a colorful dye job? It is gloriously colorful!
Okay I've got another one. Hear me out. Have you guys heard of the Orange Dove? They belong to the very colorful "fruit doves" group. And no, it's not a domesticated species. https://preview.redd.it/upmvoleq759d1.png?width=900&format=png&auto=webp&s=f0fec68791bad2c65c378fba9d2e3414a73375f2

Passenger pigeon roleplay :( I really like bleeding heart doves though, there are more! Probably good astrologers too... :(
i like how it looks like it's called a fruit dove as in "a cross between a fruit and a dove", and how each successive reply to this comment just cements it. like excuse me these are not birds these are a persimmon, a durian, and a passionfruit...
Sir I believe that is an orange with just a touch of mold.

Can't really say with confidence that it's widely unknown, but I would love the [I'iwi](https://ebird.org/species/iiwi) to get some love and conservation help. Absolutely stunning in person, and tragic that it's just another endemic Hawaiian bird that is declining.

Doing the lord’s work.
Yes, one of Hawaii's last birds with a significant curved bill. I love curved bills. Like 😭: [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black\_mamo](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_mamo) And 😭: [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaii\_mamo](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaii_mamo) Honestly just scrolling right here: [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_birds\_of\_Hawaii#Finches,\_euphonias,\_and\_allies](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_birds_of_Hawaii#Finches,_euphonias,_and_allies) is so stressful 😫 EX meaning extinct and CR meaning critically endangered and often unknown if extinct
This is the last call of the last known Kaua'i ō'ō, calling to nothing: [https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=x2KH5AoyeBc&pp=ygUWbGFzdCBjYWxsIG9mIHRoZSBrYXVhaQ%3D%3D](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=x2KH5AoyeBc&pp=ygUWbGFzdCBjYWxsIG9mIHRoZSBrYXVhaQ%3D%3D) This is why I hate feral cats, invasive species, avian flu, and Europeans colonizing every island literally ever from like 1400-1900. There's like less than ten birds extinct in the wild (as in still living in captivity), and one of them is Hawaii's very own - crow. [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_extinct\_birds\_in\_the\_wild](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_extinct_birds_in_the_wild) I don't know if I should be happy or sad about that.
I'd love to see Hawaii become a wildlife haven like it used to be, and not go the way of Guam's "Silent Forests." And can we please stop billionaires from removing large swaths of the rare remaining habitat to make mansions? Thanks. People see Hawaii as a classic "tropical destination" where you just relax on the beach and at your resort, but it also has so much wildlife that needs protected (as well as the Hawaiian people whose homes are being taken by other people moving there). We really need to rethink Hawaii and our priorities. 🐧✨
Extraordinary Birder with Christian Cooper had a whole episode on these birds. I highly recommend the whole series.
so glad i got to see some in december since the future of hawaiian honeycreepers looks grim, though the I’iwi is actually doing the best out of the remaining species! https://preview.redd.it/2fu8j2w2v59d1.jpeg?width=1260&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cdfcdfbca50b3ed697470cd9545fa8fb36d31168
How many people are aware of the Bald Parrot? https://preview.redd.it/6gmsib20d59d1.jpeg?width=1147&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b0c48813e89e0382ab0bbc5d2c3511a779d6f0b2
reminds me of the other bald parrot, pesquet's parrot, which is more metal than anything https://preview.redd.it/tmfphsj3i69d1.jpeg?width=1410&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=244a7b770042885ef8472368915c60ee63888a90
and the vasa parrot, which is weird as hell. females shed their head feathers and their head turns yellow during breeding season... https://preview.redd.it/nq3elandi69d1.jpeg?width=560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=19e08519f8122ca1a87671d502f76963e35ebe28

It's hideous! Cool share.
Do brown creepers count? Tiny little squeaking weirdos that can’t decide if they are a woodpecker or a warbler
I like the somewhat related wallcreeper of Eurasia! https://preview.redd.it/rpxoaz2ze59d1.png?width=400&format=png&auto=webp&s=87f34ccfa3cbd2e69b1fdb824bf01dbbbbb1e89b Still really want to see one here.
I guess Europe is more stylish than the us
I have not seen a brown creeper for a long time. The seem most like a nut hatch behavior wise. They do not get enough love!!
Yeah. Nut hatch is a better descriptor than warbler. I only ever see them when I stare out the window for an excessively long time and notice flying tree bark. Once I watched 3 do little back flips off the tree to catch a bug and land back on the truck.
CREEPER BACKFLIPS? AND YOU SAW THREE OF THEM? need Also yes, treecreepers are related to nuthatches! Woodcreepers aren't though. The brown creeper is a treecreeper.
It was really special. They would hop up about a foot up the trunk, do a little back loop and land back at the base and hop back up. Complete with little squeaks.
Truly top tier birds
Highly adorable. https://preview.redd.it/qbir3ty2g59d1.png?width=304&format=png&auto=webp&s=36106298e0c1e5a18e1bb151ea6ff727ebbba08e
I had to rescue one that was hurt on the sidewalk outside my office tower a few months ago. It was the cutest little guy. I hope he did well at the bird rescue!
\*volunteers at that bird rescue place the day the creeper is dropped off\*
The African Finfoot. This thing can’t decide if it wants to be a duck or a heron 😭 https://preview.redd.it/z7x3m2uwn59d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e9b7e0e30cc936a723146678f267121ac48b6afa

[White-necked rockfowl](https://ebird.org/species/whnroc1)

American Coot. Funny lil guys.
What about the other coots too: [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coot](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coot) Coots are great!

i’m glad that people in canada don’t know about [secretary birds](https://ebird.org/species/secret2/ZA-NW) but obviously in places like Sudan and South Africa, they’re popular enough to be on the country’s Coat of Arms
Near threatened here, in South Africa. I've never seen one in real life.
That’s so sad. I’ve seen 3 but at the San Diego zoo. I wish I had the scientific smarts to work with zoologists to help repopulate them/keep them safe. For now, im just a spectator
Wait what's bad aboot - about Canadians knowing?
They’re my favourite bird and I wanna keep them underrated.
What's weirdest is that they're birds of prey
And they exclusively hunt on land. No scoping out from above!
Cool! Never knew that. Knew they were ground hunters (and stompers), but so many birds of prey scope beforehand so...
Bobolinks. They sound like little droids, they have a powdered wig, and the name is fun to say. What more could you want? https://preview.redd.it/bex2xkv0e59d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e7b4cf13e1e46804d034f709974448a443aa8d7b

I would accept his talon in marriage.
Like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Southern white-crowned shrike looks very much like a chickadee, but is evil - impales their prey on thorns, leaves them there for days until they are dead. These birds are territorial and the males have little contests to see who can keep the most impaled foods in their territory.

Likely widely known in the USA but else where I could see it being overlooked. Timber Doodle or Woodcock. Reddit messed my post up but I recommend reading up on them. They evolved from shorebirds and became forest birds. They also have a silly mating ritual and perpetually walk to the beat of funckadelic tunes. https://preview.redd.it/0c2fh86vg69d1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=caaef4d5aacf6fcf0d42821a9054500bdf4a980a Love these lil goobs.

Redish egret. Everyone should watch them feed at least once.
Here's a video if anyone's interested. I'd recommend watching the entire thing, but if you want to see the feeding, go to around 5:00 and probably watch the rest (like 2 mins 30 secs maybe). I just googled it. How cool!
This thread just reinvigorates my desire for a Central/South American expansion of Wingspan.
I've never played it but A BIRDING BOARD GAME WHAT
Definitely the Potoo birds (they’re related to nightjars and frogmouths, and those also deserve so much more attention). The Great Potoo (the horrifying looking one) gets the most attention for being spooky (huge all black eyes), whereas the Andean Potoo (often confused with Northern and Common Potoo) gets the most attention for being the cute ones with the big ole yellow eyes. The other Potoos hardly ever get talked about tho… shoutout to my favorite round fluffy guys, the Rufous Potoos Obligatory Rufous Potoo pic: https://preview.redd.it/jb8w1bcus59d1.jpeg?width=1667&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d47ec56d5a49430d0184ff821f251a845726937

the hoatzin. they're the only living species in not only their genus but their entire family\*, and the chicks have little claws on their wings that they use for climbing before they're able to fly. Not only the family, but also their entire order! They are still a taxonomic mystery, no matter what methodology we tree to throw at it!

I've been enthralled by the Victoria Crown Pigeon every since i saw it at the zoo, its deep bass-y warning call is mesmerizing to me

American Woodcock, aka the Timberdoodle. Sounds and acts like a Muppet. Has dance moves for days. What’s not to love?

On the topic of vulturine: https://preview.redd.it/4nv6zn9z769d1.png?width=408&format=png&auto=webp&s=78f3304143405c38443dbe03cac19fbb7ac4923c Vulturine Guineafowl.
Dinosaur
He looks like he's wearing a bird equivalent of a pinstriped suit with a blue collared shirt.
Who made a bird out of a figure skating costume?
Sometimes known as the Vulturine Parrot, and for good reason: https://preview.redd.it/hvzczexi769d1.png?width=474&format=png&auto=webp&s=08ef7c4cffe9ab01f65213bac4f244da7671dd21
DISCLAIMER: CHICKADEES ARE ONLY KNOWN AS CHICKADEES IN NORTH AMERICA MOSTLY, AND IN THE REST OF THE WORLD, ARE REFERRED TO AS "TITS." With that out of the way, here's the fanciest chickadee around, the Yellow Tit: https://preview.redd.it/zbwvtqod469d1.png?width=330&format=png&auto=webp&s=bfea34c155dc72af839389a9cb5bbc41d6725ea3 Now black-capped chickadees are boring, and even Europe's great and blue tits.
Boring?! If you observe them they are far from boring. In my area if you disturb the nature and lull the noises chickadees are always 1st to start back up.
Omg black-capped chickadees are so cute and I love their little calls.

Saw quite a few in a park in Auckland, funny little guys.
Elegant trogon. Elusive and mysterious creature. They hunt insects by watching motionlessly from a perch. Only found in AZ. Looks more like South American than North. https://preview.redd.it/d9sovednz59d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2c4c60ce08d8e1d905736083361d0ecb7a7fbd5d

Shoebills are glorious. They have such a striking look to them; I absolutely love it.
Dovekie
Saw one for the first time last year when a bunch were blown onshore by a nasty storm (I’m in Maine, USA). Wife came home from a run and said she saw a small penguin in someone’s yard. Went and got it and took it to a bird rehabber. Such an awesome bird.
Hoatzin, shoebill, long-tailed widowbird, a number of rails, frigatebird, giant cowbird, list goes on

it's more than that. they can barely fly. imagine a garbage bag blowing in the wind.
I've seen those things fly, they're about as elegant as an elephant drunk off cheap tequila
Giant cowbird foward-facing: https://preview.redd.it/74bvthldg59d1.png?width=192&format=png&auto=webp&s=58ffa0eecd27132453b32fb96401d6daf4ce47bb

Since the Cream-colored Woodpecker was a hit, here's more from the same genus, Celeus. https://preview.redd.it/0y2sg6pc369d1.png?width=330&format=png&auto=webp&s=bd01e0439bc0bd7e8d8f724c83fa0f35b6d66962 Blond-crested woodpecker

It's probably a very well known bird, but I always thought that the golden pheasant was as if it was coloured by a child with a very limited understanding of colour theory and only vibrant felt tips at their disposal but in the most endearing way. Other pick being the black billed capercaillie. Goth grouse with red eyeliner. https://preview.redd.it/w6u4fqlwe69d1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=17129a2e7e4acb187f8fcdd0db0298e492388d6f

I saw a grebe for the first time in the wild last year while one was flying over a pond and my reaction was just like, "...what on God's green earth was that??" They're actually a pretty interesting group of bird species.
Okay that's really cool. https://preview.redd.it/acjq6cnv569d1.png?width=436&format=png&auto=webp&s=a7538f2f543670f2a4ac7b657a783bf7156f8c75

Unknown but spectacular, pointing it out bc it can actually be found in a decent chunk of the United States. Has a wickedly long scissor-tail and is found in the southern Great Plains. It’s also the state bird of Oklahoma (and on their quarters).
Eurasian Oystercatcher

Monk parrots because they build apartment building nests! Supposedly some live in New York City but I only ever saw them in Buenos Aires.
