This one time when I was a teenager and quite shy I was walking out of a cinema with my sister and brother in law, deep in conversation about the movie we'd just watched. There was a lady crouched in the middle of the hallway, which I thought was strange, but I just walked around her to the right while the other two went round the left. Couple seconds later my sister was like "I think you just walked over that plastic cover the lady was cleaning" I was like what -- turned around and sure enough the poor lady was cinema staff and she had one of the clear perspex movie poster covers laid out on the ground between her and the wall and had been cleaning it with spray and a cloth. She gave me a very dirty look and I was so embarrassed I couldn't bring myself to go back and apologise. Thinking of how it must have looked from her perspective -- some little shit just walking straight over your work bold as brass... God it keeps me up at night sometimes

Usual, unavoidable mess: slept-in beds, dirty floors, garbage. Extra mess: unwashed dishes, hair in sinks or showers, moved furniture
In this case, the shoe marks on the edge are a mess that doesn't need to be made but needs to be cleaned by someone probably barely making a living wage. If you wouldn't make extra mess at a friend's house and leave them to take care of it, idk why you wouldn't treat people trying to make a living the same way
