Reiatsu is a spiritual muscle. By learning and practicing how to manipulate that muscle, characters in Bleach gain access to unique abilities. When they are done using those abilities, they relax their spiritual muscles, allowing it to recede back into the soul.
What reiatsu is a muscle didn’t know that. English is my third language but I’m still pretty good at it but when Japanese gets mixed into it and things get complicated it’s harder to understand but finding out reiatsu is a muscle is much more logical than what I thought. I thought reiatsu was just like a thing they had but it wasn’t there if you get me like when you feel somebody looking at you
It's definitely an inference that isn't directly supported by the material, but it makes sense. Some characters, like Aizen, have such precise control of their Reiatsu that they may project it in a single direction rather than just expanding it all around them. Others like Ichigo have very little control over their Reiatsu and it just fluctuates with their mental state.
How does an athlete stop sprinting or using their specific skills & muscles when they get off the field? You relax, stop engaging and stressing those parts of the body, relax your brain, and return to your normal patterns.

This looks like an indication. Relaxing and letting go. Rukia has to very very controlled with her release or it can kill her.
I don't know if it's *just* a matter of relaxing reiatsu like everyone else is saying.
Purely because Gin's plan of using Ichigo as an excuse to go bankai, then conceal the fact that he's still in bankai to get a shot at Aizen wouldn't make sense. Aizen, of all people, would surely know that Gin is still flexing the reiatsu necessary to maintain bankai.
It might have something to do with it(Since bankai forcefully deactivated if the user's reiatsu is nearly completely drained), but there's likely a conscious deactivation required. The user might just go "I don't want to be in bankai anymore", and that's it.
This was shown after Byakuya's fight with Zommari and after Yamamoto's fight with Fake Yhwach. Use that as an analogy or reference in figuring the others. But like the other commenters stated here, they just relax the flow of reiatsu
Yeah, there's a scene where Byakuya suggests to Histugaya that he should turn his bankai off, but he phrases it as "set your bankai free."
Since they need their inner spirit to submit to them to use bankai, I've always imagined it like they're spiritually "holding on" to the bankai power, then "letting it go" when they're done with it.
That’s like asking how they do literally anything with spiritual power. It’s not real, there is no analog for us to compare it to. Same way they do some shit in their head and body to activate it, they do some shit in their head and body to deactivate it.

In the case of Toshiro you usually ask Aizen to do It for you.

Both of Toshiro's direct confrontations with Aizen was him in Bankai, and when Aizen cuts him down, his Bankai deactivates.
