I mean, they’re weird as fuck and make weird sounds but they ARE cute. I watch too much horror, read too much horror, I never saw them as scary :). But I live in the dark.
That was the point I believe. If you look at the face hugger. Its undercarriage looks like a fucked-up vagina with a dick proboscis protruding from it. The enitre design of the Alien has undertones og the darkest sexual nature.
And sexual assault (in this case resulting in pregnancy). A friend of mine once jokingly reduced it to “alien is what happens when you make a movie where men get r*ped.. and who survives..? A woman”.
So, we gotta take a small step back here. Alien's design is inspired (or, possibly, made) by H.R Giger.
Ginger-inspired designs, as well as Ginger's original art is something we can call "Biomechanical art".
Alien, obviously, is one of the main examples of this art.
Unfortunately, Giger was horny, so many of his and and his followers' (ig I can call them that) art pieces are also horny. Hence the phallic themes in Alien. As well as "suspiciously" looking underside of a Facehugger.
Alot of Biomechanical things look extremely horny but also within the realm of "decent enough to not be just porn". This and then there's just straight up merely disguised fetish in the form of "Erotomechanics" by Giger Himself.
everybody in this comment section should watch HoneyBat's "Visceral Femininity" essay, it's really good and goes in depth in why Bloodborne is so unnerving yet appealing. TBSkyen also has some chilling analysis as well.
As someone who watches an unhealthy ampunt of video essays, this one is top tier. Only Jacob Geller makes better video essays, and he doesn't have one on Bloodborne.
One of my favorite things about bloodborne is the fact that this game has some many different genres of horror. They really intended to make everyone who plays this game Terrified or Disturbed.
I saw a very uplifting post that gave me a small sliver of hope for the future in the usual slew of drearyness, then I scrolled down and saw this... thank you for tempering my expectations
There was an entire video I watched about bloodborne being "female" horror.
Birth, blood, "orphan of kos", metaphors for menstruation, trying to replicate birth, etc.
The blood starved beast literally is a monster vagina.
I think they were going for feminine horror, yes. I’m not so sure they stuck the landing (women don’t find vaginas horrifying), but I agree this could have been intended as genitalia
It's less the imagery itself but more of all the worst parts of femininity (for context I'm a dude so please correct me if I'm wrong). For example miscarriages are represented by the malformed great one that the prostitute gives birth to, this part also kind of leads into a fear victorian era lower class women which was more powerful men (the great ones representing men in this case) abuse of their bodies and abandoning them with the consequences. Then there is dying in child birth as seen with the Orphan, and birth in general and its very painful aspects.
it's less "vaginas spooky ooo" and more the idea that the cycle of violence inflicted on women and others who give birth is horrific. it has both forced birth and forced abortion, both sides of having your bodily autonomy stripped. characters who don't want to be mothers are forced into it (Arianna), while characters who do have their children taken forcefully (Queen Yharnam). you can't win either way.
I feel like the vagina by itself isn't found horrifying but I do know women who felt like they had to live in shame for a time when they started getting their period because they had very heavy flow. In that sense I can imagine that it's scary or even terrifying to have to deal with the changes your body goes through during puberty.
I think OP is referring to a serious condition where ducks are born without beaks which makes them look kind of like this.
Alternatively they could be referencing that hoochie coochie bloodbussy.
Yes!
Another one of my “these themes were originally going to be much more present but got cut for some reason” theories.
There are MANY references to the female reproductive system in Bloodborne to the point that it’s difficult to write off a coincidence, but at the same time, not quite enough to fully connect the dots. The emphasis on blood, Queen Yarnham (the bloody wedding dress really screams “THE HORROR IS THE FEMININE”), The Nightmare of *Mensis*, and obviously the numerous references to pregnancy and childbirth littered throughout the game.
It is no coincidence that these themes exist in a game that also feature tiny, yonic vagina-faced monsters.
This doesn’t confirm anything, but as a bit of supporting evidence, I’ve seen some very feminist comments from Miyazaki himself regarding female characters in gaming—that is to say, a Miyazaki game in which the horror stems from the female experience would not come out of left field.
I don't think the themes were cut at all, they're just From Soft-ed (see: abstracted to the point that most people can miss them entirely). And even then I'd say BBs narrative themes are the least abstracted of any Soulsborne game
A lot of discussion in here about the horror of childbirth/ womanhood but there's another side of the coin too, which is the parallel between powerful, male dominated institutions such as the church coveting the Old Ones power as "godlike" but these same gods being desperate for the simple human ability to procreate, something which was more commonly worshipped in early, (often pre-Abrahamic) cultures. The very Christian themed aesthetics surrounding the healing church and the scholars are 100% intentional, and in reference to how contemporary religion has taken the divine power of creation from women and tried to ascribe it to men through their "god". In spite of the very real horror the game evokes regarding reproduction it still suggests that it is the only truly "divine" power, to create new life
the game is called bloodborne.. strong themes of femininity and child birth literally the final(ish) boss being killing a god damn wet nurse with audio of a crying baby
It’s shaped like a vagina because women have vaginas, hope that clears it up
I'd known about that since... actually, I'd already known about it, from the beginning, there's really no 'since.'
But I compartmentalized and moved on. I'd smash.
It's definitely by design. The degree to which Bloodborne fans still aren't familiar with the themes of Bloodborne is startling. I blame all the early lore YT channels banging on about it being "anti-religion" and not looking any deeper than the surface level
I know what this is going for, but honestly they always just remind me of all the things in the binding of Isaac with exaggerated cleft lips, which is more of the "everything is a dead baby" thing than "everything is childbirth"
No. Some of them do look like this. This is a link to a picture in the game. FYI, it's the one on the very left.

When observing the shape of the head, you'll notice a similarity with its counterpart, which is quite intriguing given the game's main theme of abortion, as well as the transcendence of intellect to perceive a different world. Designing a character in a way where the penis represents the head and the vagina symbolizes the mouth is no coincidence; it aligns perfectly with the plot. The character who becomes pregnant is a queen, and as such, a queen needs to communicate with her people. Her pregnancy, conceived by a higher being.
Guys this is a pretty bad disease children can be born with where the nose and mouth are fused.
Don't Google it but once you've seen it you will never see female parts again.
Piggy backing on the Bloodborne is uterine horror, I just had a baby last year and pregnancy/child birth was exactly like Bloodborne
Mostly /s. Except when I had to get on my hands and knees to get baby in better position I felt just like fake Iosefka 🤣
OP, You do realise the entire game is a horror story focused on birth, right?
I mean, it is literally the name of the game.
Just about everything is related to menstruation/mensi[e]s & birth.
That's the whole point my friend. It's to let you know that they are safe and friendly, kind of fucked up eh?
I must be afraid of intimacy, then, bc these little guys terrified me when they first appeared. Love em now, tho. Silly little jar heads.
Watch out! There's a vagina behind you! Did I scare you?
No! Not a vagina! It's horrifying!!
“Eww it looks like a sad old man”
When did Meg become a hunter?
I love how everyone who’s played the game has said how they eventually grew on them and went from scary to cute
I mean, they’re weird as fuck and make weird sounds but they ARE cute. I watch too much horror, read too much horror, I never saw them as scary :). But I live in the dark.
Just like....returning homeeee *turns and winks at camera*
what the hell
Well sure. Bloodborne is full of feminine themes and iconography.
When the “it looks like a pussy” joke backfires because it really is one
Hey, unrelated, but has anybody noticed how everything in Alien looks like a dick?
That was the point I believe. If you look at the face hugger. Its undercarriage looks like a fucked-up vagina with a dick proboscis protruding from it. The enitre design of the Alien has undertones og the darkest sexual nature.
One of the main themes of Alien is the body horror a woman experiences during pregnancy
And sexual assault (in this case resulting in pregnancy). A friend of mine once jokingly reduced it to “alien is what happens when you make a movie where men get r*ped.. and who survives..? A woman”.
They were created from human dna and facehuggers are effectively the "reproductive organ" of aliens so it makes a small amount of sense at least lol
Not the face huggers.
I mean they hug the face an insert a long schlong with a pussy like opening that goes down the throat to deposit eggs
So, we gotta take a small step back here. Alien's design is inspired (or, possibly, made) by H.R Giger. Ginger-inspired designs, as well as Ginger's original art is something we can call "Biomechanical art". Alien, obviously, is one of the main examples of this art. You might need to reread the comment I wrote, because it feels like you fell for the joke I was making.
All of that because of Giger
My art has been commended as strongly vaginal, which makes some men uncomfortable.
Jacky Treehorn treats objects like women, man!
Nice reference
Even the word itself is enough to make men uncomfortable. Vagina.
Johnson????
Reference to what, exactly?
The big lebowski
Far out, man.
It’s a good comment, and thorough.
everybody in this comment section should watch HoneyBat's "Visceral Femininity" essay, it's really good and goes in depth in why Bloodborne is so unnerving yet appealing. TBSkyen also has some chilling analysis as well.
She does have some great insights in that video. Worth a listen if you enjoy literary analysis.
As someone who watches an unhealthy ampunt of video essays, this one is top tier. Only Jacob Geller makes better video essays, and he doesn't have one on Bloodborne.
When #justgirlythings takes a really weird turn
Also dark souls - the shape of Humanity item icon also have this theme
It is probably intentional tbh
I mean femininity and motherhood is such a massive theme in Bloodborne, it makes sense that there’d be some yonic symbology
Bloodborne's entire deal is the horror of pregnancy and birth, so...
Horrors of British child birth
"I have some bad news for you Miss Yharnam, the baby, it's British"
“Oh no is it too late to abort it?” Doctor: “well if you sign this we can use the fetus as a meal for beast hunters”
I love when people start to realize vaginas are everywhere in bloodborne
I read that as vegans for some reason. Definitely not a single vegan in BB loll
Bloodborne is all about girly things so yeah
“Girly” is one way to put it
Its the girliest game of all time :3
There was an entire video I watched about bloodborne being "female" horror.
I think it’s more of a horrific twist on the female anatomy that trying to scare people with female genitalia
No but they do find pregnancy and childbirth horrifying
Smash
Next question
Pretty sure it's a dead child...
Did he stutter?
Your point being?…
Even better
Yeah ur getting hunted
Whatever could you mean.
I think OP is referring to a serious condition where ducks are born without beaks which makes them look kind of like this. Alternatively they could be referencing that hoochie coochie bloodbussy.
Very good, OP
It’s quite yonic and definitely intentionally
I said yonic in a comment some months ago and a bunch of people tried to correct my spelling
Well, they can go to the Defiled Chalice for that.
that looks like ah.. wait nvm, not possible
\*sigh\* \*unzips pants\*

Wait, that's their mouth?
They have one of three skins that I know of. On that looks mostly normal, one with really big teeth, and the one in the picture.
Vagaña
I should call her.
Don't think about it. Don't think about it. Don't think about it. Don't thi--

WELL NOT UNTIL I'VE SEEN THEM IN THIS MUCH DETAIL I HAVEN'T
Guys whats this from?
Wait nvm i jerked off already.
It's from Bloodborne. That's also the name of the subreddit.
the game is called bloodborne.. strong themes of femininity and child birth literally the final(ish) boss being killing a god damn wet nurse with audio of a crying baby It’s shaped like a vagina because women have vaginas, hope that clears it up
You know, I never realized how much the messengers faces looked like moon presence’s till now…least the mouth is very similar.
Pretty sure even Jacksepticeye called it a Vagina Face when he did his playthrough so.
He did lol, on multiple occasions
You leave gumpy alone, he's just a little guy!
BONK
No bonk, that really is it
I'd known about that since... actually, I'd already known about it, from the beginning, there's really no 'since.' But I compartmentalized and moved on. I'd smash.

Not at all? What do you see?
Your mom

In case anyone is wondering, no, the actual bath messengers do not have vulvaes for mouths. They even have teeth. But nice one op.
No. Some of them do look like this. This is a link to a picture in the game. FYI, it's the one on the very left. [https://images.app.goo.gl/5FVZ7DL6UNmXHKXj9](https://images.app.goo.gl/5FVZ7DL6UNmXHKXj9)

Nope. Nobody has ever thought of anything but a mouth
Not according to the comments.

Piggy backing on the Bloodborne is uterine horror, I just had a baby last year and pregnancy/child birth was exactly like Bloodborne Mostly /s. Except when I had to get on my hands and knees to get baby in better position I felt just like fake Iosefka 🤣
And the brow region looks like a peen. The face actually looks like an amalgamation for both genitalia.

OP, You do realise the entire game is a horror story focused on birth, right? I mean, it is literally the name of the game. Just about everything is related to menstruation/mensi[e]s & birth.
Nope, what else could it be :)
Intentional. There's even what appears to be a cervix.

Can someone help me beat the guy on the wheelchair
Just listen to the sounds they make, sounds like someone with a full mouth
actually, the name "Kos" (spelling not translating) in arabic is what you're thinking.
My girlfriend just started playing bloodborne and as soon as she saw that it was "Why is that one's mouth a vagina" so I guess that's something
Nope, but now you made me see it

In war times, every hole is a trench 🤷🏻♂️
Chronically online or just horny?
I was thinking about this common deformity and how this little dude pulled the worst case of it possible.
Not till now.
Leave the messengers alone, they busy buying various hats
I guess this checks out that the white blood in the doll came from Gehrmans pp
