I don’t know that uncomfortable is the right word. I think he can be pretty cagey and introverted at times, and was also probably in awe at the talent in the room, as we know he really appreciates great musicians in a uniquely deep way.
He had the look of regret before he recorded. Like when you’re 40 and you go to a bar and everyone there is 22. What am I doing here? How do I get out of this? Oh no it’s too late
It's also possible that he didn't feel comfortable being in a smallish room with so many people making so much noise for such a long time, while also being perfectly fine with participating to the song and having one on one interactions with people.
True but people on the spectrum have difficulty with noise and crowds as well as changes in their routine. They are also highly intelligent souls. I'm an introvert but I'm open to the possibility that Dylan can be both.
I don't think Dylan was comfortable being filmed; I don't think he ever has been - he doesn't even have the screens turned on at his own concerts, for God's sake!
Also, it's well documented how he struggled in the 1980s to find inspiration in the recording studio. Dylan is spontaneous - he likes to go in, get a take and move on. The recording session for "We Are The World" definitely wouldn't have been comfortable for him, what with having to hang around waiting for others to record their own parts, and the presence of so many others (musicians plus a film crew) would, more than likely, have seriously heightened his discomfort.
On top of this, I don't think that Dylan is comfortable around lots of people, be that because he may possibly be: (a) socially awkward; (b) intimidated by the amount of talent in the room; or (c) uncomfortable with the attention he receives because of who he is and how others perceive him. All of these factors would, more than likely, have been quite offputting for him.
He did his part, did his best. But it definitely wasn’t the way he likes to work, to sing. That was very gruelling. Imagine if 60s Bob was there? Oh man!!!!!
You could argue that song only exists in part due to 60s Dylan.
That’s how they talk about him in the beginning of that documentary about it.
I’m sure aside from the general uncomfortable atmosphere (which all of the artists were feeling to some degree) he’s self-aware enough to know that’s really probably actually why he’s there and getting a solo vocal take in 1980 whatever.
don’t know if this will make sense but i’ve always felt the song ‘on the road again’ feels very relatable to the autistic experience. the protagonist in that song feels very innocent and sensitive, and the lyrics read like an explainer for why an introvert would want to avoid all the bizarre habits and behaviours of other people. i’m sure the song has other meanings but that’s the way that i’ve always connected with it (i am autistic)
>He once said in an interview something like, if anybody else was writing songs that I wanted to sing I would have sung those songs but nobody was so I wrote them myself.
He also released 3 albums worth of Sinatra covers...
I never said Dylan didn't sing covers of songs he likes. And I said in the subject of this thread that my opinion might be unpopular.
Here's what Dylan said about his early covers: "I learned lyrics and how to write them from listening to folk songs. And I played them, and I met other people that played them back when nobody was doing it. Sang nothing but these folk songs, and they gave me the code for everything that’s fair game, that everything belongs to everyone."
This is from an interesting article so I'll post a link here for anyone who hasn't read it: https://bob-dylan.org.uk/archives/2220
His debut album was also before he said the quote above.
Which was about starting to seriously write songs.
Which is not to be confused with regularly performing covers.
What??
They were there all night long, they started late at night and didn't finish until early morning. I think a lot of them were just really tired. Dylan isn't really the kind of person who does things he doesn't want to do. My guess is he was tired and maybe overstimulated, but in the footage he looks calm to me. He looks focused and like he wants to get it right and contribute to the project as well as he can.

This.
Dylan sings from the heart. I don't think his heart was in that song so he had some difficulties.

I agree with you, but doesn't it make it sound like he's on the spectrum
I don't think that's an unlikely scenario. It's entirely possible. Weird people often are.
Not all introverts are on the spectrum.

I guess he was uncomfortable because he just isn't a professional singer who can sing a few notes via sight-reading out of context.

Pretty sure the '60s Dylan was never gonna be there

Dylan, uncomfortable? I think he's so ahead of everyone else that he probably just was all like, whatever
i think he’s a little autistic and doesn’t like large groups of people most likely. i’m not trying to make a joke by the way

"On the Road Again" by Dylan or the one by Willie Nelson?
Dylan on bringing it all back home
I get it. At first I was thinking of Willie's song, and then I figured out it was the other one.
Do you eat brown rice, seaweed and a dirty hot dog?
i gotta think you’re really weird
I gotta ask if yer for real!

Many years later.
His debut album was also all covers aside from two originals. And he's regularly performed covers throughout his career.

I always assumed he was stoned
I think he knew the cameras were on him, saw it as a chance to add to the mystery and behaved accordingly!

People that weren’t famous BEFORE the 80s thrived. Most people who WERE struggled to some extent or broke down completely.
I always thought John Mellencamp's music stayed away from a lot of production trends and has dated well
I actually love that movie lol I’ve shown it to so many people it’s so fun to watch
He was uncomfortable. This is old news. Move on.
Agreed.
Sure, if we ignore all the obvious signs that he was uncomfortable, he looked very comfortable.
Bob always does what he thinks is best
Hes expressed that music cant change the world, been there done that. "I cant sing a song i dont understand. He could have also been incredibly high.
He did not look high. He looked uncomfortable and kinda lost.
Sometimes that happens when people get high
