Even in the Wilburys he sang lead vocals on his songs. I think he has such a distinctive style that is hard to combine with others. And he puts unusual emphasis on things compared to other vocalists. Look at *I Shall Be Released* from Last Waltz. Dylan sings the same lyrics as Richard Manuel but at totally different times

"It's very difficult to sing along with me because it's never clear to me where my own voice is going." —Bob Dylan

sincerelyabsurd

Real quote? Fascinating if so. Dylan is so hard to sing along to, but so much fun.

hajahe155

Yeah, it's from an interview Dylan did around his 50th birthday in 1991, which ended up being controversial because it was supposed to be for this big cover story in The New York Times Magazine, but Dylan sorta sleepwalked through the interview and the interviewer wrote the story in a negative way like Dylan's a has-been. The Times assigned the story but then rejected what was submitted, so the interviewer/author sold the story to Spy magazine, and then Dylan's publicist went to the press and said this is bullshit, we've been betrayed. Anyway, in the interest of full transparency, I should note that when Dylan said it's difficult to sing along with him, the topic of discussion was why he doesn't do audience sing-alongs. So he was specifically saying people in the crowd can't sing along with him. But I think the sentiment can be applied more broadly. Here's the full quote: >They can't do that, and they never could. That was never my thing; *nobody* could ever sing along with me. Well, maybe a couple people down in front in the first row, but outside of that it's very difficult to sing along with me because it's never clear to me where my own voice is going. >Well, you know, 20,000 people singing "Darkness on the Edge of Town," you know, like one night Bruce [Springsteen] had everybody singing that with him, and it sounded pretty good, and it's something people think about, but it's never really occurred to me to make people do that.

sincerelyabsurd

Thanks for this!

BetterCallEmori

"The Lonesome River" with Ralph Stanley from Tell Tale Signs. Travelin' Thru also has an entire session of duets with Johnny Cash.

SteelyDabs

That’s Bootleg Series. I wish it had made it to a studio album since that song is incredible. They should do an entire album together

thesophisticatedhick

It’s not on one of Dylan’s studio albums, but Bob sings a great duet with Willie Nelson called Heartland. It’s on Willie’s Across the Borderline album. You can find links to the album version as well as a live performance on YouTube.

FridayNightFreedom

Willie also released an album of Frank Sinatra songs recently.

gmanee

There is a studio recording of him doing Buckets of Rain with Bette Midler. It's on youtube.

D_RayMorton

And a really nice version of “You Really Got A Hold On Me”. That session is such a fun listen, they both sound so flirtatious and laidback

Funky_Pauly

nuggets of rain lol

Better-Cancel8658

In the outtakes of thst recording he tells bette that he never sings seconds. Meaning his always the lead vocalists. She also asks do you know any motown , he replies, yea, there's a motel up the road

sincerelyabsurd

If Dogs Run Free…with Mrs. Scatlady

DylanLars

You never heard Dylan sing The Boxer with a tape recording of Paul Simon before?

bagheadblox

The one on self Self Portrait? I always thought that was crooner Dylan singing a duet with ‘normal’ voice Dylan

Innisfree812

Both voices are Dylan.

bagheadblox

That’s what I thought

blueglove92

You are right, and no one appreciates that joke

david681

I thought that was Paul Simon as well for 20 years, only found out in the last year it was him doing a duet with himself.

DylanLars

I’m finding out this second too

doublet498

Check out "The Spirit of Rock and Roll" by Brian Wilson. It includes a verse by Bob. :)

Innisfree812

The Bootleg series album Traveling Thru has more that Dylan recorded with Johnny Cash.

coleman57

The album version of Heart of Mine, from Shot of Love, is basically a duet with Clydie King. You could argue she’s just a prominent harmony singer cause she doesn’t get any solo verse, but she’s def central to the song’s appeal. For some reason some people dislike it, but I say it’s a masterpiece of both songwriting and performance. And it features a Beatle, a Stone and an MG, with Bob’s piano-bashing leading the funky rhythm. Way better than the live version on Biograph—accept no substitutes.

Zardoz27

There’s apparently a whole album of duets with Clydie that really should see the light of day. They sound perfect together

coleman57

Amen--she's as unique as Emmylou. I'd love to hear more of her, duet or solo. Come to think of it, an Emmylou and Clydie duet might be really cool. Or not--it'll never happen in any case. edit: TIL she died 5 years ago (RIP), was a Raelette from 1966-68, was on Sweet Home Alabama (booing for Wallace) and Exile on Main St, and made half a dozen Dylan albums (as well as a couple of rumored Dylanettes).

erkloe

There's a couple of songs with Emmy-Lou Harris on Desire.

RockyBaptiste

Not strictly a Bob solo album, but he did duet with Mavis Staples on the 2003 tribute compilation of his gospel songs: https://youtu.be/K1dqcg0psQI?si=NAsKjiTv5a7LnwSV

Wretchro

i heard a rumor that his new album will be duets

extranaiveoliveoil

That would be a great idea!

alucardsinging

Didn’t Phoebe Bridgers recently say she wanted to do a duet of Shallow with Bob lol

Young_Buck33

The song Sign Language on the Eric Clapton album No Reason to Cry

shinewagon

Came here for this. Great song. Super cool guitar style from Clapton on it

evtedeschi3

Not on one of his albums, but he duets with U2 on “Love Rescue Me” off of *Rattle and Hum*, which he cowrote with Bono.

sincerelyabsurd

This is a new discovery for me and I’ve got it on repeat now.

evtedeschi3

Excellent! It’s a nice gem.

RiversRubin

I’ve always adored his Never Let Me Go with Joan on the Renaldo & Clara soundtrack. He sang plenty of duets with her on the Rolling Thunder tour.

Final_Emu_3479

I don’t know any of the story behind it, but it is odd that Baez isn’t on the album cut of With God Our Side. Studio-wise duets have happened, Empire Burlesque is a notable example of this.

Hughkalailee

What duets are you referring to from Empire Burlesque?

Final_Emu_3479

- When the Night Comes From the Sky - I’ll Remember You - Trust Yourself I would say these are more duet oriented than the gospel backup

Hughkalailee

Ok, thanks. They are certainly more duet-style.  I was thinking of prominent, credited artist duet, yet that isn’t precisely what OP asked.

44035

Duets aren't a big thing in the rock world. Can't think of a lot duets from guys like Neil Young or Bruce Springsteen, either.

kellermeyer14

Bruce has some pretty famous duets live like "If I Should Fall Behind" and "Tougher Than the Rest". Lately he's released multiple duets with Bleachers ([Chinatown](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4uA85iWsIg)), The Killers ([Dustland](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3BZ8hnLyRc)) and The Gaslight Anthem ([History Book](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyUgfrCegOs)). Neil Young may not have many duets but he has done three albums of quartets lol.

shinchunje

Young does have one with Willie Nelson and so does Dylan. But then most folks have a duet with Willie Nelson.

coleman57

Ol’ Slutty Pothead, they call him

creepyjudyhensler

Even Toots Hibbert

saplinglearningsucks

Gary US Bonds would like a word.

kellermeyer14

I just saw The Boss last Thursday and he sang... a duet. Tougher Than the Rest with Patty

williamblair

I don't have anything to answer your question, I just need to comment how weird it is that you twice mistitled the song. There's no "side" involved, never has been. it's "Girl from the North Country".

Alarming_Ad7092

Sorry I'm not a native English speaker, just forget the name of the song

notadryeye

you're a dick.

HomelandSecurity8

He did a bunch of stuff with The Band (mainly the fame hog Robbie Robinson) so I guess that counts

MPG54

I think Shelter from the Storm, Idiot Wind and a Hard Rain.. could all be sung as duets.

CamLwalk

[Bob & Van duet One Irish Rover](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QK46RzGON-4)

CamLwalk

\*not studio

spellsmyth

Lots with Clyde king, this from the trouble no more concert film is so beautiful. https://youtu.be/CDtBX1xTdHY?si=2HyDs8rzRas7DQON

Sadie_at_Silver

He does a beautiful duet with Clydie King of 'Abraham Martin and John'. It's on Youtube. Got taken down awhile ago but it's back.

Fuzzy_Dunnlopp

Couple of songs on Desire are duets, right?

Spare_Impression_294

I feel like I remember hearing a cool version of Blowin’ In The Wind where he sang with Joni Mitchell or something… it might’ve been in that Rolling Thunder doc, idk if it’s on any of the bootleg series or anything tho

zavacky

Sign Language with Clapton.

zavacky

Clydie King…Abraham, Martin and John.
