Hahahaha! I was thinking one would have made the point but that all eleven give at least a little location context. When I started, I thought they would be a little more spread out, but they really are all in a row in the two places. At least for the ones I saw.
Those giant 4 foot wide tree stumps around the frog pond really bum me out. I imagine those trees must have been there before Boston was even founded? Gotta get workin' on them new trees.
Hey OP plant nerd here, if you could get a close up of the bark, and any flowering parts of the plant, it would help figure out what they are! (Unless they were kind enough to label them)

Some close ups of misc. bark and a few buds but there was not much flowering.
Don’t make up for the over 5000 acres that have been cleared for solar fields. Global warming will kill you in 7 years, I mean climate change and it’s 12 years.
They really need a landscaping facelift for the commons/garden. It's so underdeveloped, especially in the winter it's borderline inhabitable. Compare it to other Olmstead parks, it could be so much more
Really? I was in the public garden yesterday and it was beautiful! Goes to show if you think something is nice you can always hop on reddit and hear how it actually sucks 😂
They are both considered part of [the emerald necklace](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerald_Necklace), which he designed. Whether that counts as an "Olmsted park" or not is a bit up to your interpretation of what exactly that means.
They are but F L Olmsted had nothing to do with either one, and whether he did or didn’t isn’t really a question of how you interpret it. Olmsted had everything to do with the necklace east of Massachusetts Avenue. He came up with the idea for the Back Bay Fens and then designed the whole park. Olmsted also proposed aligning the park system along the muddy river (instead of some other idea the city was considering) and went on to design the whole thing (Riverway, Jamaicaway). Olmsted and Charles Sargent together designed Arnold Arboretum and Olmsted himself designed Franklin Park including park buildings no longer standing. Lots of technical challenges with the Fens— they were tidal at the time but later freshwater after Chas River was dammed. Olmsted also had the idea of shifting the alignment of Commonwealth Ave west of Mass Ave to avoid water and railroad.
I just got back from Chicago for a wedding, and guys… I hate to say it but they’re whooping us in the public park game. My belief of Massachusetts = bestachusetta was shaken to its core
My neighborhood is essentially bereft of trees. Sure would be nice since they produce much needed shade when the blazing sun heats this area up. But then, I live in a relatively poor, immigrant neighborhood, so there's that.
Thank you for taking photos of all eleven for verification.

RemindMe! 100 years.
Hahahahaha! I try to remind myself that planting and caring for trees overall is really a gift to the future.

yes! would love to see more info about changes to our parks.

Anywhere to track implementation of the plan?
Nice. I wonder what species they are?
Likely maple or elm.
I was wondering if they are Elm. I know the Boston parks are doing their best to keep the existing elms alive.
Any info on the species?

They must have put that 311 request in two years ago.
Hahahahahaha!

planted too deep :(
At least one was labeled as a pin oak!
Oh boy I just came back to this comment I wrote when I was toasted haha. Time to check these out on INaturalist! (But my tree ID’s are pretty shaky)
Lovely, thanks so much for sharing!
YIPPIE!
They are planting more trees! I saw them this morning planting more on this hill on the Beacon St. side of the Common.
I saw this too! I was tempted to post another ten photos of trees that all look the same.
Great! When the public garden going to be done with the new Arlington St entrance?
They are all growing slowly
What makes you think they’re growing slowly? It’s says they’re new trees right in the op.
Welcome, babies!
The Tree Czar strikes again!
A lot of Beacon st trees - had that many been removed?? The 11th tree is awful close to the fence...
Only in Boston would the planting of 11 trees be worthy of note lol. That being said it's 11 more than before. Gotta start somewhere
I’ll get High to this
And probably all male.
I read this as 11 new *tires* in the Common, and was wondering why you were so excited about that.
They really sprung for the big ones

Who gives 2 shits about a tree pave the roads!

Common is not an Olmsted park. Neither is public garden.

I don't know why that was such a controversial opinion. Boston's parks are definitely half baked, even compared to parks in the suburbs here.
