This right here. I will add one thing is that Canadian Whiskey *can* have colorings and additives in it but bourbon made here in the good ole US of A? They are all 100% no additives or coloring.
Bourbon is highly regulated and can't legally be called bourbon unless it meets the requirements.
* Made it the USA
* At least 51% corn in the mashbill
* Aged in charred new oak barrels
* Distilled to a maximum of 160 proof (80% ABV)
* Barreled at a maximum of 125 proof (62.5% ABV)
* Bottled at a minimum of 80 proof (40% ABV) and a maximum of 150 proof (75% ABV)
If it says bourbon and it's made in the US it's legit. If you're really concerned you could get one labeled bottled in bond or bonded that have some additional requirements. Bourbon went through is oil and water phase before prohibition which is where the bottles in bond act came from.
Bourbon is one of the most regulated drinks in the country. Doesn’t mean it all tastes good though.
It’s also one of those things where small craft and artisanal brands are not necessarily better.
How much do you want to spend? Green River Wheated is a good <$40 bottle. So is Buffalo Trace. Old Forester 1910 <$60. Woodford Reserve <$70. Elijah Craig Small Batch $80. People love Four Roses but it’s not my cup of tea. Ranges from $20 something for basic bourbon to hundreds for various limited editions and all kinds of varieties in between.
While there are definitely accusations of people spray tanning (adding color) to their young bourbons, I think the real travesty in bourbon is that nobody is actually making bourbon anymore. There are hundreds of brands that don’t distill or age their products, just buy whiskey from MGP, slap a label on it and call it their own. It reminds me of all of the Bud Miller Coors “craft” beer on the shelves. It’s dishonest.
It’s easier to name the real bourbon producers than all of the fakes.
This right here. MGP makes a good product, but buying it, slapping a label on it and calling it your own is disingenuous at best. I wanna see what a distillery can do, not what some bottler can do.
There’s so much dishonesty in the alcohol business it’s frustrating.
I remember liking jack Daniel's. As for what I think is fake? Idk. Im only recently learning cognac, vodka, etc. I use to just view it as beer and liquor lol
Bourbon is strongly regulated. If it's called bourbon, it's bourbon.
This is the only answer you need.

Start with Bottled in Bond.

So Johnny Walker is fake scotch whisky?

The real question is what do you think is fake bourbon? If you’re thinking Jack Daniel’s, Tennessee whiskey is just bourbon *extra*.

Avoid anything labeled like: additive + bourbon. Example to avoid would be; cookie dough, cinnamon, pickle, and barbecue sauce.
Buffalo trace, old forester, knob creek, barton 1792, four roses, new riff
Thanks I'll check these out

You want everyone else to compile a list of “real” bourbon for you? Good luck, you might get a few before this is deleted.
