The main issue is it is summer in AZ and so damn hot with this car. I always go through this every summer. I have had the car since 2019. I understand your thought process. It is very similar to mine as well. Hence the requested intervention.
I have the same issue in FL. Almost sold my 2011 Boxster S and so glad I didn’t. You can’t compare a P car to much else. Golf R is awesome, but not a replacement for the Boxster.
Had a Golf R, now have a Boxster S. The Golf R just isn’t as fun as a Boxster! In the Golf everything is effortless and takes away from the driving experience. I smile so much more with the Porsche!
If you can find a decent low mileage 987 they are in the 50K+ range around here. So I will need to keep saving up. I haven't priced out Caymans to much yet.
Ah, yeah even base model 997s are ridiculously priced.
I drove a 997 before getting my 987. Just didn’t seem worth the money. I like to think of Boxsters as 2/3rds of a 911 for 1/3 of the price.
I am honestly pretty much done fixing the car. I like it, but I no longer have a project with the car. Barring IMS replacement and repainting it. everything is sorted. I have a mental disorder where if a car is fixed I get bored with it. I do want another Porsche, but not ready to fork out 911 money.
I’ve had my cayman 10 years, it’s in perfect condition now. So every six months I do an upgrade. Sports exhaust, upgraded brakes, upgraded suspension, upgraded shifter, added CarPlay and sprint booster etc. going to get a new steering wheel next I think. Other cars with electric steering and turbo engines feel very mundane and boring to me. My dad lent me his new 992 last week while he was away, as amazing as it is I still prefer to drive my old cayman
I also have a first-gen 986S. It is a magnificent car, fast enough for anyone and a agile as a roller skate. I like it more than my RS America. And it has the great benefit of being near the bottom of the Porsche status pecking order. It’s the best beater in the world.
The hardtop is good for A/C and makes the car look like nothing else on the road.
You're going to buy an overpriced hothatch that makes a l9t of power and it fun at first, then realize it's not as special as a dedicated sports car chassis that's mid engine. The VW will probably feel overly clinical based on my experience with VW and Miatas. Never had a boxster but I will in a few years.
I have an S3 (mechanically identical to golf R) and a 2001 boxster S. I love both, but they are absolutely opposite ends of the spectrum. Get both and you will pretty much have every driving experience covered between the two.
If this is about having a daily driver, I would get the golf R and either keep the 03 Boxster or find another car to scratch that fun itch . The safety features of today’s cars are seriously worth considering.
I never really feel unsafe in the Boxster. Unless I see a cybertruck. Those things are scary huge and the drivers aren't ever paying attention. I only have 2 parking spaces. I like to keep my cars in the garage. The weather here in AZ kills outside vehicles.
I did the broke version of this by selling my 370Z Roadster for a Veloster N.
The regret set in on nice days outside and not being able to fully enjoy it with the top down. The only days I’m satisfied with the decision is when I’m moving large items or >1 passenger
It was a moment of weakness after getting heatstroked at work. ( not really but kinda) gonna keep the car. I appreciate everyones thoughts on the matter.
Depends on the year of Golf R you’re looking at, but unless you want to navigate through three layers of menu using capacitive touch buttons to change basically anything in the car from radio to screen settings… stick with the Boxter. I’ve owned GTI’s before and I would never go back to that user interface.
Sell it to me, ha! Already a 2002 S, and $7k in on top of purchase price, $12k. 75k miles now only. Love driving. Vegas heat. Still manage to keep top down 99% of time
Honestly you'll only get maybe $15k, right? Tough to take that hit. But fuck it. Find another performance elite manual car and tune the hell out of it. You'll be just as happy. Sounds like a hobby worth the expense
Is this your only car? And what do you use the car for?
In 2018, my job at the time switched us from car allowance to a company car. My DD up until that point was a MK6 GTI.
The GTI mostly sat once I got the comp-car so I sold it to my brother and bought a 2000 986 base.
It was a fantastic car to daily and sometimes I wish I still had it. Interior space was rarely an issue, got around 29mpg avg, was quick enough on the straights, did okay in the corners, and just an overall nice interior to sit in every day.
Fun factor goes to the 986 hands down. I enjoy autox/hpde/canyons wayyyyyyy more in the Boxster. Plus the sound of the flat 6 beats the turbo4 any day of the week.
At the end of the day, it'll boil down to what you use this car for. If you are limited to a single car, a GTI/Golf R are very nice. If your 986 doesn't see a lot of corners and all you care about is straight line speed, might as well go for the Golf.
If handling matters to you, the 986 wins no contest.
Yeah. You will miss it. Ive driven both. Golfs are great but at the limit will push / understeer a lot. Boxster handling is sublime. Try to get clear ceramic window tint on front windshield and door windows too it will help a lot. Im in Fl so i feel your pain
The r is such a battery daily. Do you have another daily?
If not. I bet you’ll love it my guy. A very fun car that is the perfect daily driver especially if folks are going to sit in the back seat. Not nearly as fun as a Porsche. But you’ll also never worry losing the back end because you didn’t maintain throttle through a turn.
Don’t do it fam it’s not worth it
The main issue is it is summer in AZ and so damn hot with this car. I always go through this every summer. I have had the car since 2019. I understand your thought process. It is very similar to mine as well. Hence the requested intervention.
Is your ac working fine? I’m in socal and do okay. I’m silver colored tho. Try the foldout sunshades if you haven’t already
I have the same issue in FL. Almost sold my 2011 Boxster S and so glad I didn’t. You can’t compare a P car to much else. Golf R is awesome, but not a replacement for the Boxster.
Lived in AZ for ten years. Jumped at Eloy! You keep the top up in summer! The rest of the year is convertible weather!
It would be a downgrade I think
Had a Golf R, now have a Boxster S. The Golf R just isn’t as fun as a Boxster! In the Golf everything is effortless and takes away from the driving experience. I smile so much more with the Porsche!
I’m considering selling my VW GTI to buy a boxster S 😭
This is the way.
I went from a MK6 to a 986 base. No ragrets. Not even a single letter.
I did this. No regrets, it’s just more fun.
Boxster is the better car.
Why would you trade in a beautiful analogue driving machine for a golf lol. Lotus Elise is the only other car I’d consider in this price point
I have built an Emira on their website a couple times.
Lovely cars, if you have that budget I think it would be a great car to use for all occasions
Get a 987 or 981 Cayman. Better sports car, and then you won’t have to complain as much about the summer heat. The Golf is a step backward.
If you can find a decent low mileage 987 they are in the 50K+ range around here. So I will need to keep saving up. I haven't priced out Caymans to much yet.
Seriously? I paid $18k for my 987 Boxster. Caymans hold a little more value but not that much.
I was thinking 997 sorry about that.
Ah, yeah even base model 997s are ridiculously priced. I drove a 997 before getting my 987. Just didn’t seem worth the money. I like to think of Boxsters as 2/3rds of a 911 for 1/3 of the price.
I do really like the lobster claw wheels. A lot.
The golf engine does not sing like the Boxster. One has a chassis for driving pleasure, the other is for taking the kids to the supermarket.
Sell it and get a different model. 987.2 or 981, which I feel is the best Boxster model ever made.
Do it. Then if you get tired of the golf, sell it, get another boxster.
Why sell?
I am honestly pretty much done fixing the car. I like it, but I no longer have a project with the car. Barring IMS replacement and repainting it. everything is sorted. I too have been looking at the smaller steering wheels. The steering wheels in the 986 remind me of a bus. They are just too big.
I can ship you mine if you need something to wrench to perfection in your spare time!
I also have a first-gen 986S. It is a magnificent car, fast enough for anyone and a agile as a roller skate. I like it more than my RS America. Hear me out, keep the Boxster and get a GTI. Should be about the same price delta (and being a GTI / 986 owner I'm a bit biased)

I drive a Golf R and I've been trying to find the right Boxster for months. The Golf is a fine car, but it inspires no real passion.
Get a 944. If you can keep it running for 6 months without a single thing breaking on you I’ll give you $1
I have put over $12k into this car since 2019. Mostly preventative and while I'm in there stuff. I have been fixing things before they break.
Sounds like the perfect car to buy!
Dang... I have an '05 Boxster S. I've not put anything like that into it, and I've had it since 2011!
Have you looked at the capacitive touch buttons in the Golf? I wouldn’t wish those on my worst enemy.
Just go Mk7. Incredible car. Mk8 is a downgrade.
The MK7 R or GTI are the newest Golfs I would ever consider buying.
I have not.
Depends on the year of Golf R you’re looking at, but unless you want to navigate through three layers of menu using capacitive touch buttons to change basically anything in the car from radio to screen settings… stick with the Boxter. Noted.
Sell it to me, ha! Already a 2002 S, and $7k in on top of purchase price, $12k. 75k miles now only. Love driving. Vegas heat. Still manage to keep top down 99% of time
I'm all in at $27k. I have a problem with perfection.
Honestly you'll only get maybe $15k, right? Tough to take that hit. But fuck it. Find another performance elite manual car and tune the hell out of it. You'll be just as happy. Sounds like a hobby worth the expense
I have a 986 and a (tuned) Mk7 GTI. A hot hatch is a great car, but it’s not a sports car.
I’ll buy your boxster S I’ve been trying to find a decent one for like 2 years now
Can you afford both? That is my suggestion.
If you’re coming out of the closet, a car doesn’t need to be involved.
what lol

I have a 99 boxster and a 15 gti and honestly id trade them both for a mk7.5 R
A GTI isn’t a Porsche
If it's just the AC bringing you down, get that fixed. Start by cleaning your evaporators. I have a 981 and it's got the coldest of my fleet!
I do need to get it refreshed. It has been 4 years since I recharged.
Worst case, it won't be a stopping point for a potential sale to someone else. Or wait until winter so pawn it off on the next sucker!
No. Both cars have their place in a garage.
U should get the golf R with a 3rd pedal
Have a 2003 986 S, would only consider selling to get the 74’ 914 I sold years ago. Mid Engine handling or nothing else.
Yeah. You will miss it. Ive driven both. Golfs are great but at the limit will push / understeer a lot. Boxster handling is sublime. Try to get clear ceramic window tint on front windshield and door windows too it will help a lot. Im in Fl so i feel your pain
I have ceramic tint on the windows and a strip on the top of the windshield. I never thought do do it clear.
I’d do the R if it’s your daily.
It isn't. It goes out every Wednesday for errands and sits on the trickle the rest of the time.
100% worth it the gold r’s are so cool
The r is such a battery daily. Do you have another daily? If not. I bet you’ll love it my guy. A very fun car that is the perfect daily driver especially if folks are going to sit in the back seat. The boxster being mid engine doesn't have that issue. if you let off the gas it has righted itself.
