hughesyourdadddy

I turn the radio off every time they come on. I agree. Their characters are annoying. I’m surprised whoever is in charge of marketing hasn’t been fired. Their strategy is dumb and irritating.

Outtatheblu42

Same, Spence ads are a 100% guarantee I will change the station.

hughesyourdadddy

The most effective ads are short and quick and leave a catchy tune I hum throughout the day or sing along to while driving. If you’re making people yell at the radio or turn it off, you’re doing it wrong.

neksys

And yet here we are talking about the ads, which proves they work. This is a tried and true advertising technique and the Spence ads are known as some of the most successful campaigns in advertising. Like, its won awards. Spence has grown from a tiny single store to a national chain because of these ads. I hate them and will never shop there BUT the math is obviously working in their favour.

boonsonthegrind

How many of us have actually spent money at Spence? Maybe we’re talking, but we ain’t buying. Diamonds are so common we use them to coat work tools, drill bits saw blades and the like. Soooo precious.

Plant_party

Are you talking Reddit or the general public? Because the general public buys loads of them. Luxury goods aren’t luxury cause they are “good” it’s just branding.

boonsonthegrind

More like whoever has to suffer through hearing Spence Diamond ads. Diamonds are overpriced and not rare. They’re luxury items do to a long running campaign by debeers. They’ve got a vault full of diamonds to control availability and price. It’s a scam.

Plant_party

Yes this is well known. There are also designer hand bags being sold for thousands that are made of plastic laminated fake leather. It’s branding like I said.

SilverOwl321

“Vegan” leather…on this subject, i hate when companies try to advertise how cruel safe they are using vegan stuff when they don’t really care in the end. it’s cheaper to make those products and they are making more money. It’s the real reason.

SwiftSpear

I feel like you have to be the kind of person who buys diamonds in the first place to debate whether spence is a good place to buy diamonds.

BeelyBlastOff

Believe it or not, some people will save over a year or more to be able buy their hopeful spouse a nice engagement ring. Spence does fit that customer market. It is a very competitive market.

neksys

Right?!? It's like someone saying "I'm a lifelong vegan and will never change. I watched an ad for McDonald's and it didn't make me go out and buy a burger, therefore the ads aren't working"

neksys

I mean they appear to be making hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue, so people are definitely buying Spence diamonds. The ads are annoying but they also have open showcases where you can try on (fake) rings and also heavily promote lab grown diamonds vs real diamonds. Those things are attractive to consumers even if they are annoyed by the ads. But the whole point of the ads is to simply get someone to remember that Spence exists.

catballoon

Doesn't sound like you'd be buying from Spence regardless of how pleasant their ads were. These put "Spence" in the mind of their potential customers.

brandon1234569

The ads are smart. A guy who forgets a special holiday, he thinks of these ads then just goes there.

neksys

This is exactly the target. It isn't about getting you to go to Spence TODAY when you are annoyed by the ad. It's about Spence being the first name you think of two years from now. Irritation fades, but brand recognition sticks. There's a reason these ads are so common - they work. If you lose 3 customers with your ads but eventually gain 4, it is still a significant win, *especially* in a competitive industry like jewelry.

vancityxray

Exactly. How much the ads infuriate me is enough to make me never step in a Spence store

Historical-Tour-2483

I know a fair number of people who have gone there for engagement rings (which I believe is their bread and butter). I even went to check them out because their low barrier, open showcase approach had been engrained into my brain

1u___u1zZz

Most people can't name any "high end" jewellery stores off the top of their head, but if you're listening to the radio you'll at least know of Spence. A lot of the people who say they'd never shop at Spence probably aren't doing a whole lot of diamond shopping as it is. All it takes for the ads to be successful is to ingrain it into a few clueless husbands/boyfriends heads so that when it's time to buy a ring or an anniversary gift and he doesn't know where to start he'll just go find a Spence

EnterpriseT

>And yet here we are talking about the ads, which proves they work. Here's where I think many would disagree. Talking about it is one thing but the ads have made me far less likely to ever consider shopping there. It's like the bus bench ads that say "you just proved these ads work". Except looking at the ad isn't enough.. It has to covert and I'm no nearer to buying bus bench advertising.

neksys

You are missing the point of both these ads. No one buys a bus bench ad or a diamond ring on a whim. They are not trying to convert anyone in the moment. These types of ads exist for one reason and one reason only -- to one of the first things a person thinks of if and when they ARE in the market for those things.

tallayega

That's not how it works. It's not supposed to make you go buy something. Eventually you'll be looking for a diamond ring and Spence will jump to your mind. Maybe you won't go there, but a lot of people will because of the ads. This shit works. No one is smarter than advertising. If you think you are look around your house and realize most of the products are name brand when generics exist that are the exact same thing for a fraction of the price.

sirazrael75

Not if you complain to the radio station that the adds cause me to turn off their station. And that I let Spence know their adds are a prime reason why I will bever shop there

Nescient_Jones

But then you would lose all that character development... ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|table_flip)

ComprehensiveFig837

They are about the most well known radio ads in the province though

Scary-Top-2880

That also goes with those annoying dr Polick adds. So sick and tired of both.

Sharp-Incident-6272

Now its getting free marketing from this post lol

hctimsacul

I hope you scream “shut uuuuuuup” while you turn it off. As I do

BeeShoddy3234

I stopped listening to news1130 in the car completely due to their ads. It’s actually a lot more relaxing not having the constant news and traffic on tbh. I mostly just listen to my own stuff via CarPlay or CBC (no ads). The random “woo!” At the end seriously infuriates me. My car now doesn’t even have AM band and I don’t miss it. All because of those dumb ads.

purpletooth12

Same man. Podcasts and CBC is where it's at! Who wants to listen to the same 4-5 songs/hour?

SeatTakenCantSitHere

Yup.. just pre download podcasts on wifi before you head out so you don't burn thru your cell phone data or listen to Fiona ask Sarah another stupid question.. maybe you should treat yourself to a ridiculous tennis bracelet, just because why the f not right? Equally as tone def as that radio add for the new high rise in Surrey seriously laughable like "are you going for the investment package or" .. she's like "one of each, one to live in and one to help pay the mortgage" and just like that the developer sold 4 units to this guy and girl.. I don't know how there's possibly any units left if everyone who conveniently works at the hospital is buying 2 units each?!

isochromanone

> I stopped listening to news1130 in the car completely due to their ads. It’s actually a lot more relaxing not having the constant news and traffic on tbh. I mostly just listen to my own stuff via CarPlay or CBC (no ads). It was the same thing with 100.3 The Q in Victoria. Their ads almost always had cartoonish, shrill, annoying voices and the scripts were inane. It literally drove me to listen to podcasts and that's actually such an improvement in my commute because I discovered some very entertaining podcasts that I can learn things from. Oh yeah... also there's no Nickelback every 30 minutes.

RM_r_us

I loved the pivot when they had "Michael" the boss starting to fall for "Sarah" his employee and asked people to vote on whether he should share his feelings. I'm guessing people used to opportunity to point out the inappropriateness of a boss romantically pursuing an insubordinate because that storyline magically disappeared!

TheOneWhoCheeses

I just assumed they dropped it because people were voting for him to get rejected (lol). I have a sneaking suspicion they’ll try it again since there was no reason to be bringing Sarah back into the ads despite her “leaving”. An excuse for Michael to thirst over her again I suppose.

NeferkareShabaka

The Spencer Cinematic Universe is more lore-filled than I imagined!

TheOneWhoCheeses

Ngl I was low-key invested in the lore. My problem with the ads is that it’s now a bunch of nothing so it just drags on with how repetitive it is. Also I just don’t like the way Fiona talks

RM_r_us

My coworker from Scotland says Callum has a real accent that's from a particular region, and Fiona does not. Maybe one day we'll get to hear why the siblings have such different accents. Also, why is Fiona no longer working as a teacher in Scotland? Is she here on a visitor's visa or as a permanent resident? So many potential storylines...

22percentaccuracy

I was thinking about this the other day too! I remember they had some kind of online drive asking what "we" thought Michael should do (as in tell his feelings to Sarah or not) and then that story line completely disappeared. And then soon after Sarah left and they introduced Fiona the sister in her place - but are still in touch with Sarah who's travelling the world. Honestly I hate the commercials but it's hard not to pay attention and remember. It's like the Rex Morgan of the radio world.

layla_beans

I think when Sarah gets back, Michael will finally lock her in his vanilla sex dungeon.

UnrequitedRespect

I mean the whole pageantry of marrying a girl with a ring is so 1965 to begin with, they are probably trying to figure out how to get people to buy their shitty rocks, diamonds are pretty common now that people can just make them 🤷

NegativeSoup

Spence had a “vote” years ago about keeping the stupid “Yahoo” scream at the end of the ads. People voted overwhelmingly to stop the scream. The next ad was a sad almost guilting ad about how upset poor Michael was that no one liked his scream. How could we do this to him. The next ad was I don’t care what you think, the scream stays! Why even ask for people’s opinions if you would just do what you want anyways?

DrGonzo84

If I lived or worked near a spence diamonds I would open the door every time I walked by and scream "yahhhoooooo" then leave.

flashtastic

I angrily "WOO" loudly at the store when I am nearby buying cat food. I'll throw in an extra one for you next time.

BluedLewds

Im also incredibly tired of hearing their radio ads

Reality-Leather

Sarah is on her way to Kyoto to look for better deals. Wait for Sarah to come back she understands customers. Woooooh

Objective_Quail_4623

I thought I was the only one who loathed every time that it came on. Their earlier ads with the obnoxious screeching at the end was the worse.

KDdid1

They make me SO angry! They've always been annoying but now they're gross and manipulative. I turn the radio off instantly when they're on.

DaVinciRiotPolice

I’ve texted into 650 multiple times, not with sports thoughts but to mention how much these ads drive me nuts.

superworking

Sports radio is just happy to still have the lights on at this point. I doubt they can be too choosy with their sponsors.

GoldenTacoOfDoom

Which caused them to make more of those ads.

minnion

I loathe all of those style of adds that use a fake conversation. It's a terrible form of marketing and I'm not sure why anyone thinks it's acceptable. No one believes they're genuine conversation lol.

Physical_Dependent21

Hate them also. One station plays them too much switch to another and have to endure dr pulluck ads - almost worse

WhizzoButterBoy

This!!! These are the worst ads !! I just started turning my radio off when one comes on. Don’t listen to the ads, or the ones that follow these ads. I don’t listen to a station just peace out for about 5 minutes

Heythere23856

I will NEVER ever use this company because they try to be as annoying as possible and brainwash you into buying their product…. I say fuck Spence diamonds and anyone who shops there…

pocohugs

>diamond heart pendant, JUST $1,699!” You could have something practical, like a washer/dryer, for that price. I never understood the appeal of diamonds - nothing useful about them. Let alone screaming in excitement. So obnoxious.

MandrewF

Have you tried buying your SO a washer or dryer for their birthday? 😂

The_Cozy

My favourite gift ever was my first radial arm saw, followed by an impact driver then a paper shredder. 🤷🏻‍♀️ People want gifts that are thoughtful. Jewellery is actually the least thoughtful gift you can get for most people, unless it's their favourite thing.

pocohugs

If we needed a washer or dryer, I'd be tickled pink to receive one or the other! And grateful my SO had the good money sense of discerning need from frivilous. Sparkly and shiny doesn't get the family laundry done.

MrEstevez

I fucking hate that weird yelping sound they have at the end of there ads. Big reason I quit listening to the radio all together

RoElementz

I will never, ever, EVER, shop there due to the psychological abuse of those radio ads for the last 20+ years. It's like they purposefully bought extra ad time so they can drone on and on about nonsense you have to endure for what feels like an eternity.

AntontheDog

This is the second time I've read about Spence's ads on Reddit. That tells me the ads are working. I know it's annoying, but there are memorable. If you are looking for jewelry, they will probably be one of the first names you would think of. I'm a boomer. I remember "Where's the beef?" That Wendy's ad was annoying too. But memorable.

chloe38

I have a spence ring from my ex husband and everytime I hear the ads it does make me wonder if they will buy back the diamonds. LOL

surmatt

Hard disagree. I know they exist and I don't know a ton of diamond stores.... but if I'm ever in the situation where I'm googling stores it'll be a nice little reminder "oh right... Spence's.... they're the one I'm not going to shop at because they're so annoying." I also know Wendy's ads. I've also never once in my life eaten at a Wendy's.

HackMeBackInTime

also, they're part of the false scarcity conspiracy. we make artifical diamonds in bulk in labs now. there's zero reason to mine diamonds anymore, it's a pretend status symbol now. they're just trying to keep the scam alive...

da9621

And those stupid screams at the end, “WOO!!” Like stfu

Blackhole_5un

Diamonds are the most common and readily available gemstone on the planet. It's all a big fat lie that they are special because it makes a lot of people very rich very easily. They can make them in a lab, you don't see people making emeralds or rubies in a lab now do ya? Big. Fat. Lie.

bunnykip

You're right, it's all a scam. However, they make emeralds and sapphires/rubies in labs as well as diamonds. I have a one carat lab-created sapphire on my engagement ring, it cost $200 for the stone. Any jeweller can order these if their customer asks, they just don't always advertise that because they make less money.

New-Baseball7565

Spence ads are a bane on existence. There is so much talk about it here simply because the ads are so annoying turning people off and sending them somewhere else. The pain is real.

Smashley027

YUP! The absolute worst. The 'acting' sets me off into a rage. They're unnecessarily long and cringey

D413-4

If I had to buy a diamond, I would go so far out of my way not to shop there…

DeadManOnCampus2024

Spence Diamonds is bullshit. Fuck their radio ads. I stopped listening to radio because of them.

catmistress30

Fiona needs to shut the f up. I agree, these ads are terrible and super annoying.

catkilback

Omg! I can't stand Fiona!!!

ShoddyRun5441

I hear these commercials frequently on Rock 101, too. And I agree, they are absolutely annoying and have gotten stupider in recent years. I have also noticed they are broadcast way more often than other commercials, even those that pertain to public safety (while taking pot shots at AI) regarding the dangers of drinking and driving. Oftentimes it feels that unaffordable rings are a higher public prioritization than the likes of keeping people (and yourself) safe on the streets.

MorningBrewNumberTwo

“Hey did you put diamonds on the grocery list this week? Better check the Flipp app to see where diamonds are on sale this week.” 🙄

Extra-Guidance3085

but… you can see cupids arrow if you look in from the top!!!

SidewaysButtCheeks

SHOW ME

FudgeDangerous2086

they once ran a Poll on their ads asking customers to vote to get rid of the “scream “ people overwhelmingly voted to get rid of it. they did…. for about a week and then said “ we know you voted against it but it’s too iconic to stop so we’re bringing it back”. that was about 7 years ago and they’re still screaming.

friedtofuer

I keep seeing this YouTube ads that just goes "Thanks for sending me money though [app name]. It went straight into my account. How easy was that?" And it irritates me like no tomorrow omg idk why. Like what else is the money supposed to do? Get lost? 🤦‍♀️

gamfo2

When i was shopping for an engagement ring i refused to shop at Spence Diamonds because of how much i hated their ads.

_CSTL

Their little stories they make up in their ads are sooo stupid. I turn the radio off when ever it comes on.

AwesomeSeadoos

We should put Google reviews with one star ratings until they stop these ads. Or at the very least get rid of Fiona. She's the worst.

sitkasatlas

I will never buy from them because of the ads

Cherisse23

I agree. And they’re so much worse at Christmas time. I got satellite radio a while ago and I’ll never go back. Ads like this are killing local radio. ETA: shitty annoying ads that make you turn the radio off or change the station are what I think is killing radio. Not advertising as a whole. Apparently that wasn’t clear.

canuckseh29

Sadly, any ads (even ones like this) are literally the only thing keeping raido alive. How many stations are dropping off over the last few years? Spence diamonds might be the only thing keeping sports radio Alive in this city and we would never know.

djk3t

I mean the ads suck but ads like this are literally saving local radio.

ProfessionalCPCliche

Is there a reason you believe the literally one thing keeping radio alive is killing it?

BaseballGullible7320

Don't ever buy a diamond from Spence that's my plan.

Throwawayiea

I agree with your position and i'll add that Spence uses lab created diamonds. Diamonds are worthless.

bananaEngineer1

Yet here we all are talking about it. So maybe their marketing is working?

ripmyringfinger

Probably it’s working about hating the ads and not actually buying the jewelry

Alreadyforgoturname7

F\*\*k Diamonds! They are overpriced rocks! I have never understood the appeal. Moissanite is just as beautiful and 1/3 the price! Who gives a crap if its not a diamond. I am a woman and could care less if the rock on my hand is a real diamond or has so many carats. So yes, in short, I find these commercials annoying as hell for pushing a rock that is stupidly coveted by so many.

Turbulent_Concept134

I'd actually prefer a Moissanite. They're more like a prism. Jewellers can tell a mile away, but I don’t care what they think. No blood diamonds for me!

Alreadyforgoturname7

Yes! 100%

40prcentiron

can radio stations see how many people are tuning in? and when they play a horrible ad, or a song majority of people dont like, will they know that abunch of people are changing the frequency or turning it off, or listening to whatever on their own phone?

Far-Falcon-2937

No, radio stations have no way to track people listening like that. Literally, they just put up a tower and it starts broadcasting radio waves that can be heard by anyone close enough to pick them up. There is no communication back-and-forth

Test-Tackles

Before you put an ad out on radio tv or otherwise, the person responsible should be forced to watch it on repeat for an hour.

berghie91

The most out of touch radio ad ive heard in Van is for a property management company that wants to turn being a landlord into just sitting around collecting money from people struggling to make ends meet.

djk3t

Ya I think the ads are annoying on purpose. It sounds like a double whammy for you because not only are they annoying but you seem to have a disdain for jewelry.

Anxious_Ad2683

That was their thing - 20 years ago they addressed this in their advertising about their ads being annoying…it’s the ad. It’s clearly not failing them since the business has grown so much.

ABC_Dildos_Inc

What about Ragnar's pompus ads? "Everybody loves potato chips. Now you can have potato chip earings! Best of all, they're only niiine, ninety niiine, ninety fiiiive". Then after advertising that partial proceeds of a product would go to a charity, he announced an Inukshuk pendant with an emerald jammed into it. But no mention of an indigenous artist or partial proceeds going to indigenous groups. And they let everyone know that they have to close the day before their once a year super sale, when everything is like 50% off. They absolutely are not swapping everything in the store for low grade crap to sell at inflated prices. But don't forget, there's free parking in the back!

SomeWomanfromCanada

Do they still say 🎵Spence Diamonds… better by design…🎶like they did like 500 years ago (circa early 1980s on the 99FOX/101CFMI/LG73 radio days?) I’ve not lived in BC (or Canada, for that matter) in a dozen years (I have family in Vancouver still) and I’m kinda surprised they’re still around. FWIW, no one that I know of has ever bought at Spence.

neksys

They aren't just around, they've grown and have stores all across Canada. They even had a bunch of US based stores but closed those down over COVID and haven't re-entered the market. Like them or hate them, they are definitely successful with what they are doing.

ImmediateLion6969

Funny thing is, I always thought they were a Calgary thing. Having to hear that annoying fucking "Spence Diamonds- WWOOOOOO" so often. Then, moving out here, first thing I hear on the radio was this company again. I will never escape Spence.

slabocheese

Tell me about this girl..

Yacht_rock_rudder

And the fact they make the lady Scottish, which is a caricature of ‘cheap person’ to make it seem reasonable.

tchronz

Fiona is Calum's sister. And she's going to buy a magnificent tennis bracelet soon. Did you know they only started calling them tennis bracelets in 1978?

Yacht_rock_rudder

🤣 oh trust me I know now

crx00

Ragnar jeweller is pretty annoying too. We"ll make you sparkle and shine

scarlettceleste

My favourite was the one where they said something about how even when you are broke there is no excuse not to get engaged, ie buy a ring…

seajay_17

I just assume most people in Vancouver are rich and then it makes sense :p

The_Cozy

I think it's easy to forget how many rich and very comfortable people there are in the world. You know what never stops selling when the middle class and lower class are struggling? Luxury goods, luxury cars, million dollar properties, yachts, and hotel rooms all around the world in luxury suites are all full of people popping over in first class 🤷🏻‍♀️ The middle class is just getting a TINY taste of how the majority of the world has lived for generations, but the classes above them are enjoying all of the public wealth that has finally been mostly transferred to them. They have more money than ever, and that's who businesses sell to when "normies" can't afford anything more than food and housing. No one is "out of touch". The middle class is "out of the loop" is all.

5yk0

They are the worst.

FarceMultiplier

I dislike them as well, but mostly because they are so repetitive. I don't want to hear the same ad 8 times in one commute. So I've taken to playing podcasts instead of local radio.

xkatiepie69

retail diamonds are never a good price. Those ads are annoying for certain. I am an antique jewelry seller, and I roll my eyes so hard when I see a fellow seller post things like “this one is so affordable and won’t break the bank. Only 16,995 USD for this massive diamond” in what world is that *affordable*? So out of touch.

robot_boulanger

They sound like they are done by Shrek..even have a fiona lol

ripmyringfinger

I’ve always had their ads due to our clinic radio. I HATE IT It makes me have the urge to go to the store just to pretend I like the jewelry, then call out the staff. But I know it’s not their fault since they’re the ones who didn’t market the radio

GoldenTacoOfDoom

Just be happy Spence Jones no longer does the ads.....

McRaeWritescom

Diamond market is all fake. Both from the De Beers monopoly shit in the 1900s, to the fact that modern science means we can take raw carbon and make diamonds whenever. Add in the blood diamond shit and I'll never buy a single diamond as long as I live outside of trades applications of real utility.

DevourerJay

I sure am glad I pay for a premium ad-free source of music when I commute. Cause radio is horrid.

i-like-turtles-2000

The simplest solution to your problem: stop listening to the radio. It’s mind boggling to me that people can sit through the repetitive playlists, inane milquetoast dialogue from the DJs, and like 30% ads. You are aware that there an infinite number of alternatives for music and podcasts covering every conceivable niche interest, right?

BBLouis8

Who said it was a “problem”?

thebigbossyboss

God it’s not better here in Alberta.

tI_Irdferguson

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who hates this. Occasionally Listening to AM radio is one of my few boomer traits and these commercials drive me insane. And they started coming on right when they phased out those annoying Blue Cross commercials. "Me... And Gizmo? *meow*" Don't know why but that was rage fuel.

Kind-Huckleberry6767

I can't stand commercials or repetitive programming so I listen to co-op radio FM 100.5. Some of the programming isn't my favourite, but they have reggae on Saturday evenings and Monday night there's a DTES program which is fun.

jdyyj

Try streaming music instead of radio. Ads are one reason why I don’t listen to radio or watch tv.

BBLouis8

I gotta get my Jeff O’Neill in the morning. I’ll listen to 650 less now that hockey is over. But with Spotify there’s a lot of dead spots for data on my area can be very annoying.

The_Cozy_Burrito

They are cringe as hell

itsneversunnyinvan

On Burrard, off robson, or at 200 st in the Langley bypass

Blueliner95

Without disagreeing with you OP, I have to say that I treasure their radio ads. They were always uniquely terrible, now they have changed format/lead voices and are terrible in a different way. To me, this is part of the charm of local radio. It's not slick. It's the opposite, it's grating. I find that strangely refreshing.

BBLouis8

I respect your opinion, but you’re one sick dude/chick.

vancityxray

I sent them hate mail because their ads are so annoying 😂. I also turn off my radio when they come on. The only ad to make me do that ever

Vrdubbin

It's the only commercial that actually changes my mood. I turn on the radio and one of their ads is on and I feverishly try to change the station before the dreaded "WOO!!" If I hear it accidentally it makes me cringe so hard I almost want to turn into oncoming traffic. I would go out of my way to make them have less business.

peasantscum851123

I forgot about Spence diamonds!! stopped listening to radio 20 years ago, thanks for taking me back!

LaReinalicious

I hate it too!

westendvice

I remember at one point the ad was for 13 or 14000 ring and they went with "only 13/14000". Seriously? "only"? Who is your target audience? Guy in a Bentley? I doubt he's listening to your junk/radio. I'd go out of my way and would rather pay extra somewhere else, just not to deal with them because of the ads

Comprehensive-War743

I HATE those commercials. I turn them off the second I hear one.

Darius2112

Their ads are the absolute worst. It wouldn’t matter if they were selling the Hope Diamond for a dollar, I still wouldn’t buy it from there.

Vanshrek99

It's cheap costume jewelry. Not considered high end. If you do a comparison with Spence to any of the family owned premium jewelers you will soon realize those 1699 ear rings will be 5 k at other places. They do well at the top end of cheap shit. It's the same with so.many goods.

BBLouis8

That’s even more insane to me. Who’s fielding a couple thousand dollars on CHEAP jewelry??? I’m single do not something I need to worry about now. But I remember the Mother’s Day ad once that was some pendant for like $2k. If I spent that on a gift for my mom she would KILL me.

Deep_Carpenter

In other places there are similar advertisements. It is odd to hear them but they appear to be part of a franchise system or they copy each other.

BBLouis8

I’ve heard that too. Because the voice that say “on 200th st and the Langley bypass” is different than the actual ad. It’s like the ad is done for multiple places then they tag it with the local information at the end.

Odd_Parsnip3013

I find that with many ads. It's almost like they do it on purpose. I actively boycott companies with idiotic ads. I am too old to be condecended to. And trying to manipulate my emotions only drives me away. On the other side of the coin, I have been a voice actor for many years, and I know the difference between good and bad direction. And most of what I hear today is trash. They have to be doing it on purpose. My advice? Write the company a letter letting them know what you think about their ad campaigns if it really means that much to you. As a society, I think we need to be more vocal about what we are being fed. They will change if we are loud enough.

surrient

Some of their ads have been pretty fucking gross "Get her a diamond, and your coffee will end up cold" or something like that, implying you'll get laid if you get them a diamond.

manhattancherries

I HAVE to change the station if one of those comes on. I cannot bear to listen to one. Just painfully cringe. I love marriage, love, engagements.... but I HATE those ads!

Sneekpreview

It's even worse knowing that diamonds are a total scam and essentially worthless.

disco_S2

THEY'RE BAAAAACCKKK!

drake5195

This is why I like CBC

Boo_PuzzlerPro

I change the station every time they come on!

Mrsloki6769

One of my most hated commercials! Then that stupid Alpine credit one. I will change the channel!

SVTContour

Diamonds are intrinsically worthless. Unfortunately they’re also a woman’s best friend.

TeaShores

Ads are meant to attract attention, irritation is one of the tools.

WhereBeCharlee

It’s a shame that so many people frequent and purchase their crud. Going to a local jewelry maker is the way to go, and a real lapidary isn’t tough to find… Mine was based out of Washington and shipped my semi-precious stone with zero issues.

reasonablechickadee

They were the first diamond store that included LGBT ads so I was thrilled to hear them every time. I always thought their little stories were funny too. The yahoo makes them stand out, that's the point of marketing.

bctrv

Not the most ethical of companies

Castlebrookqueen

I listen to the journey because they don’t play those ads.

bpblurkerrrrrrrr

omg lol, i haven't listened to the radio in over a decade and these ads are one of the things i remember most because i hated them so much. glad to see they're still around to annoy everyone 😂

thatguythatdied

The one I remember was when Shaun got meta and said “hi, I’m Shaun from Spence Diamonds. Some people don’t like my voice…”

Cannenta79

You're not alone. It's amazing to me that anyone is still trying to push the whole diamond agenda. And now, they're blowing smoke up everyone's asses about 'lab grown' diamonds and people are eating it up like it's more ethical, forget the exorbitant pricing over something so common and essentially invaluable to begin with.

BRB_Watching_T2

The ads are annoying as fuck, but when I think diamonds the first place I think of is Spence Diamonds. Will I ever go there? No. But the ads do their job.

Dilettante7

Holy Crap !!!! This has been driving me nuts for years too . I absolutely hate these commercials with a passion and flame of a thousand suns . So glad I am not the only one . I want to kick the ass of the ad agency .

SevereAlternative616

They’re right up there with the “PRE MATURE EJACULATION” ads

shaun5565

Just don’t listen to the radio that’s my plan anyway

Livin_thedream21

I find it interesting that their diamonds are man made and not mined from the ground from an actual diamond mine 🤔 https://preview.redd.it/42ovupw1dfad1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e0e3769c13954ec9a530f7eaadf5a4e034c40cd

No-Stuff4749

Spotify is worth it you know

GAB78

this

Top_Performer4324

I’m weird about jewelry in a sense that I’ll look up the price of an oz of gold and see it’s like $2300 and then look at the jewelry and think to myself I’m not getting the full value for the precious metal

pinkruler

Also? What is with the scream at the end? I can’t believe they are still doing that

CurveAdministrative3

I moved out of the lowermainland 9 months ago. I had not one thought of these ads until I saw your post. I hate you for reminding me.

Devilishadvocate69

And here I thought I was the only one that felt like this about the ads....Fiona just needs to go away. They need to fire the ad executives....

fk_u_rddt

As much as I hate them and the entire concept of diamonds, if I am ever in the position of considering buying a diamond for a hypothetical future partner, do you know what name is going to come to mind? Spence. Because of their ads. Which I hate. Their marketing clearly works for them, as annoying and out of touch it may seem to you and me.

tookytook

If I was proposed to with a Spence diamond engagement ring, I would have to say no just out of principle

totaltasch

Somewhere someone is flattered by this post

Material-Comb-2267

The fucking worst!

apra24

Went in there with my wife, before we were married, to look at engagement rings. They have a whole system where they try to latch onto you and get her to try on different rings, without price tags on them. I used a website to send a fake phonecall to myself, then answered it and excused myself for the important phonecall, and stayed outside until my then-fiancee came out. She was initially annoyed at the awkward situation it created, but I know she is too polite to walk out otherwise. We had a much better experience at a jeweler in Leduc.

Hour-Ad-3635

I was a general laborer on Sean Jones' house once. There were a handful of times he'd come to site and I'd be hiding in the garage or somewhere in the basement, once in the Porta potty and I'd scream the squelch he does at the end of his ads randomly it was hilarious for me cause people on site knew it was me doing it as a joke but I'm pretty sure I came off as being on the spectrum to him .

TheUndyingFeather

I kind of love them tbh...I'm sorry...

B8conB8conB8con

I agree that they are annoying and they have been annoying for the last 30 plus years I’ve been listening to them but with the state of local radio their ad revenue is probably the only thing keeping 1/2 of the Vancouver stations on air.

Professional-Power57

I didn't know they have pendents for 1699... I think I'm going to Spence this weekend. Thanks!

Ok_Raccoon5497

They're the Buckleys of jewelry with those ads. I'd use Buckleys, though.

centralislandcritic

I don't really understand them, they're quite different from most ads. "Sarah, did you meet Fiona? No, what was she like? Fiona wanted the best for everything. Sort of like you Sarah". Huh?! Aren't you selling diamonds? Instead I'm getting a rambling discourse in former employees. I'll go to Michael Hill Jewelry or someplace else.

heavymetalrules

I turn off cknw and 1130 when their new ads come on now, especially with Fiona just all too irritating

dingo_and_zoot

Ads are not made to entertain, they are made to make people remember. These irritating ads do the job they are made to do.

tush-tosh

We had same annoying ads in California, also for a jewelry company. It drove everyone bat shit crazy we hated them, and unfortunately I believe this is exactly what they want because it gives them name recognition. It’s so sad they have to do this.

Marcopolo620

If there is one thing that can unite us as a country, it's the hatred of the Spence diamonds radio commercials.

reddogger56

"There is no such thing as bad exposure."

Glass-Pound-9591

They have always drove me completely nuts. The guys voice tops it off.

KitLaTigre

I hate that bloody "woooo!" Swap radio every time

buddachickentml

Yup. They can suck my butt. I will never EVER buy anything from them.
