Looking to pick up a new headset for gaming. Good directional is necessary as I play competitive shooters etc. I don't need a mic as I have a Wave3. I don't have an amp but would be willing to get one. As I stream on occasion I'm worried about the open back DT 990 pros as I don't want my mic to pick up game audio. Any suggestions? No set budget but under $350 if possible

Imo only if you have a 7900xt or better

Forward_Cheesecake72

Can i install another windows OS on my external SSD or HDD and use it on my pc that already have windows OS install it ? So that i can switch between them as needed.

MetastableToChaos

When using this Nvidia 12VHPWR adapter is it ok for one of the 8pin connectors, on the right cable, to be left unplugged? My PSU has only two 8pin ports for the GPU. https://i.imgur.com/u94iiZQ.png

djGLCKR

You seem to be connecting the right cable the other way around, the 6+2 connector (the one that has the pigtail connector) is the one that goes into the 12VHPWR adapter (just one), and the solid 8-pin goes into the PSU. Double-check your cables.

MetastableToChaos

Right ok but there will still be one left unplugged. Is that alright? That one is also a 6+2 (sorry it's not clear in the pic).

djGLCKR

It's okay to leave that extra pigtail connector unplugged.

MetastableToChaos

Cool, thank you!

It's a pretty solid upgrade, coming from the 1060. If you are still gaming at 1080p, I wouldn't doubt it. AMD could have the RX 6700 XT for the same price, which is faster, but I think that one consumes more watts. Check reviews because I can't remember right now. It wasn't a glutton GPU or anything like that but certainly not super frugal.

bestanonever

Told you to check, lol. Anyway, at 1440p both GPUS (1060 and 4060) are bad, lol. The 4060 is MUCH better but still slow. The 6700 XT would be faster, and an actual 1440p GPU at launch. If you aren't in any rush, maybe wait until next year for the RTX 5060, maybe? You can upgrade to the 4060 now but I don't know how long will it last at 1440p.

HeyTakeItEasy_

was given a free 3080 from cousin. I put it in my pc. Thing is, my current build only has a 650w psu and a ryzen 5 3600. When playing games like Destiny 2 and Bg3, the pc will go black screened and gpu fans go up to like 100. My cousin was gonna give me a ryzen 7 5800x and a new 850 psu. Would those solve the issues I've been having?

UgotR0BBED

Possibly, In addition to the 5800x and 850w PSU, I would also download and run DDU to wipe the drivers, then reinstall via the Nvidia App

Aceofacez10

I’m planning on getting a [Deepcool CH560](https://www.deepcool.com/products/Cases/CH560-DIGITAL-Airflow-Case-With-Status-Screen/2023/17174.shtml ) case and buying 2 extra 140mm fans to put on the roof of the case. I thought I’d put the fans moving air [like this](https://imgur.com/a/s4Pmd31). Will this result in good airflow?

n7_trekkie

i think you should just do the red arrow. top intake is really not great for dust. since gravity

CursedKath

My PC monitors go black and GPU fans go full speed sometimes when playing CS2. I need to power off and power on my PC to play again. Checked RAM and no issues. Power supply is fine as I still can turn off and on the PC. I ran a benchmark on GPU using FurMark and the app shows 100% usage but the task manager shows 48% or so. Any idea what could be wrong? Appreciate your time :)

What do you guys think of this: https://www.techforless.com/products/Dell/Video_Cards/J1R45.html?mv_pc=google_shoppingpd&tts=20240528111802&utm_source=google_shoppingpd&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=google_shopping&this_ccid=2&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwgdayBhBQEiwAXhMxtnlQkF3qC9nYaSnS9ehNbKszOP6cPUT-1lEXmx-wV_Cgmo3WF7Z96hoCRDQQAvD_BwE Did these have proprietary power connectors?

djGLCKR

No, all 4060, 4060 Ti, and certain 4070 models use a single 8-pin PCIE connector, the only cards that use the 12VHPWR connector are the other 4070 models, and every card from the 4070 Super to the 4090.

Objective-Note-8095

Yes but specifically Alienware OEM cards... Somebody on this forum commented that they might use proprietary connectors, which wouldn't surprise me a bit.

djGLCKR

Dell uses a regular 8-pin PCIE cable for those cards - [4060 Ti](https://www.ebay.com/itm/305526190085), [4070](https://www.ebay.com/itm/405003132269).

menswashroom

Trying to put together a PC for my brother. Mainly playing Tekken 8 and trying to make it as low cost as he can. Option 1: Buying all new PC parts [https://pcpartpicker.com/list/btJ6t7](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/btJ6t7) Option 2: Buying a PC off marketplace and just adding a graphics card [https://pcpartpicker.com/list/sgLhcH](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/sgLhcH) The only component he is insistent on is the 4060. Thanks!

Objective-Note-8095

Option 3: AliExpress special: 5600 $84 Soyo B450M $42 RAM is fine, I could cut it down to 16GB if needed. If you stalk r/buildapcsales you should be able to get a much nicer Gold level PSU for that price. Then 500W should be plenty. The insistence on a 4060 is bit strange; it's a bad value overall. There are used card with similar performance for less than half the price. I wouldn't go with an i7-6700 unless it was free. Windows support is ending soon.

Rowdy293

Dedicated TVPC or steam deck on roughly $500 budget?

n7_trekkie

If you're shopping new, steam deck. If used is on the table, you can make a stronger PC for $500

Snipeyd

Do I need a 650W or 750W Power Supply for a i5 12600KF and 4060?

t90fan

650 is fine

VoraciousGorak

That combination will run off a solid 450W unit and still have over a hundred watts to spare. A good 750W power supply isn't much more than a good 450-550W power supply though so you might as well get a bigger one for more potential future upgrade headroom.

OzieteRed

PC restarts by itself without a bluescreen in every two days, is this normal for amd cpus? I have amd aderinaline that is UpToDate

djGLCKR

Check the Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor and get the BSOD error codes. Those codes, along with any possible memory dump generated during the crash could help with finding the issue.

OzieteRed

I checked that and it says Kernel power 41 critical error, is there a code for that?

djGLCKR

Check Reliability Monitor instead and see if there are other entries around the same time the BSOD happened with a different error code/ID.

kaje

Kernal 41 basically just means Windows doesn't know why it shut down. That's the same error you would get if you just pulled the power cord while the PC was running. It's hard to diagnose.

n7_trekkie

it's not. try updating your bios, and make sure everything is plugged in correctly.

CEKARY

can I mount Fortis 5 on B670 motherboard, you know, for the LGA 1700 socket, some sources tell me I need an upgrade kit, and some dont mention it. which is it then?

djGLCKR

You mean B760. Assuming you already have the CPU cooler from a previous build and depending on your motherboard model, it could have LGA115X/1200 mounting holes (it'd look like [this](https://i.pcmag.com/imagery/articles/00pFcBd5Oh7XFo7rV30jPxY-9..v1635354196.jpg), notice the two mounting holes kinda overlapping). Otherwise, you'll need a mounting kit compatible with LGA1700 (apparently SilentiumPC sells it?). If it's new and recent, it *should* come with an LGA1700 mounting kit.

kaje

You need LGA 1700 mounting hardware for it. Whether or not it came with the hardware in the box depends on when you bought it. If it's within the past couple of years, it should have.

gooddrawerer

Everyone keeps asking me if I'm using the i7-14700 CPU for productivity, and that the i5-13600 is better for gaming. My gut is telling me to get the i7. Is it just overkill for gaming or is there another reason not to get it? I don't care if it's overkill, I'm trying to buy something that will last many years. I haven't bought a new computer in 9 years. I don't get the opportunity to spend this kind of money often.

TemptedTemplar

Performance wise, no. The 14700 is obviously better. *Value wise* however, you are looking at a less than 20% performance increase for a much greater cost. $260 vs $400 If you have the budget and don't care about piece-meal upgrading the computer in the next few years, then get the i7. If you have a limited budget, the 13600k is a better choice as you can put that savings towards other components like better GPU or a new monitor. https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cpu-hierarchy,4312.html#section-gaming-cpu-benchmarks-ranking-2024

3 120mm fans or 2 140mm fans for intake? using a corsair 4000d and having a 4080s. should i also use 140mm as exhaust fan as well?

TemptedTemplar

If you care about noise levels, get the 3x120mm. You will move slightly more air almost regardless of RPMs. So you could keep them quieter under most circumstances.

n7_trekkie

140s will be quieter and move around the same amount of air. 120s look aesthetically better imo

*Edit* Answered, Thank you for all the advice. Purchased a 5700x3d and looking for GPU. Should I upgrade or build new? If I recall, I got this Mobo for the reason that I could upgrade down the road, but that was a 'long' road ago. I am starting to notice FPS drops in newer/upgraded games, and have to lower settings. Any tips appreciated, as I have been out of the game since pre-covid. Computer specs below. AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor MSI MAG X570 TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX AM4 Motherboard G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory Gigabyte EAGLE Radeon RX 6650 XT 8 GB Video Card Fractal Design Define S ATX Mid Tower Case EVGA 650 GQ 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power

ZeroPaladn

3600 starts to look tired in some modern games, and there's a cost-effective way to keep up with the Jones' here: 5700X3D. Your motherboard has a BIOS update available to take the latest AM4 processors, which makes a one-time $200 purchase of a chip that keeps up with the entry level options from AM5 at half the price of migrating platforms over (which includes buying new RAM and a new motherboard).

winterkoalefant

You have good RAM and your motherboard can support a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D. They are a lot faster than your 3600. And your power supply can support more powerful graphics cards too. RTX 4070 Super for example. So you don't need to build new.

djGLCKR

Depends on your budget. If you want to max out (without replacing your power supply), update your motherboard BIOS to the latest version and you can replace with the CPU with up to a 5700X3D. As for GPU, I'd stop at a 7800 XT (maybe a 7900 GRE) or a 4070 Ti/Super.

hamsterrooo

Can someone help with [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/1cyavov/weird_issue_with_headphones/)? Literally no response in a week...

ZeroPaladn

Make a new post. Anything over a day old after posting with no traffic (or after approval if it got eaten by the automod) gets lost to the ether and doesn't show up in any of the new/hot/top filters.

Objective-Note-8095

I got some cheap DDR4 RAM. It seems to work fine, but it's XMP/JDEC timings are wack for everything except for 3200MHz 1.2V CL22.  Is there a reference so that I can manually scale that down to 2666MHz for a H610 board?  Can I just proportionally scale down all the sub-timings (x.83) and have that probably be stable?

winterkoalefant

yeah, scale proportionally and round up to a whole number. Keep same voltage H610 supports DDR4-3200 though. Why scale at all?

Objective-Note-8095

Woops, sorry, H510. But it's a i5-10400 CPU, so it doesn't matter.

AnubianWolf

Super curious. What H510 board allows you to modify timings at all? With H5/B5 boards I have always had to set XMP and just accept the 2666 speed with whatever timings were in the profile.

Objective-Note-8095

I was way off: GIGABYTE B460M DS3H AC-Y1. (Knew there was a 6 there somewhere.) It's a CyberPower board that was sold as refurbished. Got it to cheaply land an i5-10400 in after upgrading to an i7-10700K. Max frequency is locked to 2666mhz, but I can tweek the timings freely. I think this was something they unlocked in a late bios... Which was a little tricky to find.

Odd_Significance3027

what cpu should i upgrade to? i got 8gb of 2400mhz ram, an msi b365m pro-vh motherboard, and an i3-9100f with an rx 570. im looking to get 16gb of ram and a better cpu. i was thinking i5-9400f or i5-9600kf, because i dont want to get a whole new motherboard. and would my current ram be good for a better cpu? what ram should i get for a new cpu? i got a 600w psu btw and the stock cooler, can provide more info if needed.

Objective-Note-8095

You sure you don't want to reconsider your platform upgrade? i5-9xxxx chips are cheap.  You should be able to find a used 9400F for about $50. RAM is cheap.  You are hamstrung by the 266MHz limitation of the motherboard, but  should should find kits with tight timings for not more than $40. This should be fine upto something like a 6600, if you have functioning ReBar support, A580 or a 3060 or similar. Looks like you might be score a 5700 XT for $130. 600W should be plenty.

Odd_Significance3027

thank you

gr8p_kun

i'm slowly trying to upgrade my pc. i have a r5 3600 with 32gb of ram at 3000 speed, on a msi x570 mobo, and a 5600xt and an old 750w psu. swapped out my hdds for m.2s and wanna keep pushing forward. i know i want a 5800x3d, 7900 Gre which needs an additional connector my psu doesn't have and i want to swap to faster 4000 speed ram (which i'm ordering today). i want to go for the gpu and psu together, after i do the ram first but im worried that tired old 3600 would be a be a bottleneck.

ZeroPaladn

+1 to the previous response, don't worry about the RAM as it won't matter when the 5800X3D/5700X3D slides into your board. You have the capacity (32GB) to not care about RAM gaming-wise for a long time.

Brostradamus_

Don't even bother with the RAM honestly. There are *heavy* diminishing returns on RAM speed past 3000Cl15/3200CL16, and if you are eventually moving to an X3D chip the gains are even smaller: X3D chips are less sensitive to RAM speed than non-X3D chips. IMO get a 5700X3D (performs near identically to 5800X3D at lower temps and cost) and keep your RAM.

gr8p_kun

okay so i'm gonna ignore ram and go for the 5700x3d. thanks for the advice

Slazyel

Hi guys, just want to know which ram kit is better. I've recently purchased this kit: 32gb XPG Lancer rgb (2x16gb) 6000mhz, CL 30-40-40, DDR5, it\`s a hynix A-die it seems. I've paid $170 on that kit. But today there's a sale on this kit: 32gb Lexar Ares rgb (2x16gb) 5600mhz, CL 32-36-36, DDR5. Dont know which chip it has. That kit costs $40 less, at $130. Which one would be the better option? Is it worth it to return the xpg lancer for the Lexar Ares? Or is the $40 justified and i should keep the Xpg Lancer? Thanks in advance!

djGLCKR

The idea is to go for the fastest memory (capping at 6000 MT/s for AM5, maybe 6400 MT/s for Intel) with the lowest Column Address Strobe (CAS) latency (the first number in the CL listing). The Lancer kit has a slightly faster first-word latency of 10ns (the sweet spot) versus the Ares' 11.42. Is the difference noticeable? If you're benchmarking and playing the numbers game, yes to an extent. Still, if you already have the 6000 CL30 kit, there's no need to replace it.

ctierboy

going to buy an RX 6800, should I get a ryzen 7 5700x (£150), or a ryzen 7 5700x3d (£220) keeping in mind that I can technically afford the 5700x3d but would still like to save some money where I can

AnubianWolf

what resolution? At 1080p, I'd say buy the 5700X3D to generate more FPS. At 1440p, the 5700X3D is still better, but not by much with an RX 6800 - which will be struggling in some titles to hit 120FPS at that resolution.

ctierboy

I was planning to play at 1080p, and think about possibly upgrading to 1440p in the future but that wouldn't be for a while, so I guess the 5700x3d would be better

Objective-Note-8095

With an RX 6800, you'll generally see benefits with a 5700X3D.  The question is: why not an AM5 platform?  What do you currently have?

ctierboy

sorry forgot to say, I'm upgrading my pc that I already have and my motherboard only supports AM4

Objective-Note-8095

Well. What CPU do you currently have? Edit: So you have a 2600. Not the worst thing in the world if you want to save up/wait to see if prices drop.

ctierboy

I have a ryzen 5 2600

Got_ist_tots

I have a new build and did a fresh Windows install, using a spare SSD just to get everything set up. I currently have an NVME drive as my main OS drive that I will be moving over to my new build after using Acronis to clone the fresh Windows install over. I'm then going to reinstall all the programs I use. Going through my NVME, I have some big folders like Appdata. Are there certain things saved in there that I will need for my new PC? One thing that jumped out was what looks like a Stardew Valley folder of saved games, so I know my kids need that! I have all my Steam games on other SSDs, so I assumed the saves would be there as well. I think for most programs I can probably start fresh, but how do I know which data in there is useful?

Rohkey

I started using a desktop I had built a few years ago. It has four RAM slots and I just upgraded it from 2x8GB to 2x16GB (DDR4), replacing the old RAM sticks in the first and third banks. Is it worthwhile to put the old ones in the two unused slots, or should I just keep the two 16GB sticks I have installed now? If it matters, they are not the same brand/manufacturer.

Protonion

If they're a slower speed/latency then they'll also limit your new RAM to that same speed, which will reduce your performance. But if they're the same speed then there isn't really any downside to putting them in, it just isn't guaranteed to be stable. But like, if you notice that the system isn't stable with the mismatched combo, then just take the old sticks out, no harm done.

ZeroPaladn

You likely don't have any use for 48GB of RAM in a gaming system, and you'll be hard pressed to XMP/EXPO those kits all together so you'd take a light performance hit from it. I'd sell the 2x8 kit and make a few bucks back from your upgrade.

Coolman_Rosso

What is the price differential between upgrading to AM5 and sticking with AM4?

ZeroPaladn

So, assuming you're gaming and looking for rough equivalence in gaming performance you're looking at stuffing a 5700X3D into your existing system ($210) or jumping to a R5 7600 + new mobo + RAM (~$400). The former option is a simple BIOS update + chip drop in, at the expense of future upgradability since you're at the very end of AM4's lifespan. The latter is more expensive up front, but gets you onto a forward facing platform and also includes a RAM capacity upgrade if that was something you were already considering doing anyways.

djGLCKR

If you're already on AM4 and just upgrading the CPU, using a 5700X3D or 5900X for this example, it would cost $210-290. AM5 would require a new motherboard (\~$130-150 for a decent B650 board), a 32GB DDR5 kit (\~$90-100), and the CPU (depending on your needs, anywhere from $190 for a R5 7600 to \~$600 for a 7950X3D).

Coolman_Rosso

I'm stuck on AM4 for the time being as I already bought a bunch of parts, which is fine. I'm just trying to hash out an estimate for a friend who is interested in upgrading possibly later this year when he doesn't have to worry about wedding expenses. Thanks.

Are we talking USD or CAD? NZXT kits are usually overpriced, and that's no exception. If that system is priced at $2.5K USD, that's almost [$800](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/97ds4M) more expensive than buying and building it yourself.

Looking for upgrade advice. I play iracing, a racing simulator only and my FPS can barely hit 60 FPS on some tracks, specially newer ones they release. Seems it's time for an upgrade of something. I think I want to go for a new GPU but let me know you thoughts and best game plan. I don't need to go crazy, and prefer to maybe only upgrade the GPU but I just want to run a consistent like 100FPS. CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9700F CPU @ 3.00GHz 3.00 GHz GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER SC 6GB RAM: 64GB DDR4 3200 Motherboard: GIGABYTE B360M DS3H Lemme know your thoughts or GPU upgrades. Again I don't need anything HIGH HIGH end but just a solid bump up would be great! Thank you!

Coolman_Rosso

What resolution are you playing at?

sasssysloth

1080 I believe but the monitor is a 29 ultrawide 2560x1080

Coolman_Rosso

You meet the rec specs for iRacing, so I'm not sure if you're just trying to run stuff on ultra or what not but perhaps upgrading to something along the lines of a 6650 XT might help.

sasssysloth

Thanks I’m confused as well as I run pretty low detail settings a still have troubles. Appreciate the help!

i'm going to upgrade my graphic card, got 3 choices 1. xfx 6800 core 2. asrock 7800 xt challenger 3. xfx 7900 gre cheapest option would be xfx 6800, it cost $400 brand new, however the distributor isn't as big and reliable as the 2nd choice, asrock 7800 xt. for the newer card 7800 xt challenger and xfx 7900 gre. asrock 7800 xt costs $530 while the xfx 7900 gre costs 10 dollars more. i've skimmed some review here and there, best option is definitely 6800 however as i said earlier, the distributor in my country isn't that big/reliable than the asrock 7800 xt.

TemptedTemplar

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html Are there no other asrock gpus available around those prices? If you are hesitant due to the card being XFX, paying ~$10 - $40 more for a Asrock 6800 or even 7700xt would be a better option. The 7800xt offers on average 10 - 15 additional fps, but the 7900GRE is another small 10 fps bump on top of that. The 20 - 30fps increase would mean the card will probably last longer before you would need to upgrade again. Not to mention it only uses 10 more watts of power over the 6800, which is basically nothing.

NotNibbaKingu

yeah sadly there is only one rx 6800 model available brand new in my country, and as i said earlier the distributor isn't as reliable as the asrock's one is the biggest problem for me.

Will a Zotac Twin Edge 4060 8gb do for Valorant, MSFS, Ready or Not and Roblox?

Brostradamus_

It is vastly, vastly more than enough for Valorant, Ready or Not, and Roblox. For MSFS, it depends on your goals for resolution and detail level, but realistically yes it is plenty for most people. But you'd probably be better suited for something with 12-16GB of VRAM instead.

Snipeyd

Great thanks!

LeatherToe1812

Hi! My PC parts arrived today and my motherboard (ROG B650-A) has bios 1811 installed from the factory. Should i update the bios using the Bios Flashback with no other components installed? Or is it safe to build the PC and update the bios after booting? The CPU and RAM i have is AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D + Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5 6000MHz CL30. I'm very new to this and scared to update the bios, is it difficult? Any advice would be amazing!

kaje

Check the mobo's CPU support list on Asus's website and see what the minimum BIOS version required for the CPU is. If 1811 is greater than it, you don't need to use BIOS Flashback. If you want to update it, just use the software utility that's in the BIOS.

DitiIsCool

Will there ever be a “final” graphics card (or any pc part for that matter)? Or will games and other applications always continue to advance to the point where more powerful hardware is required?

mostrengo

No. Look at any technology ever and there are still improvements to be had. [People are still out there literally reinventing the wheel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZbZZlDDEnc) and that is thousands of years old. It's not reasonable to think that GPUs would suddenly stop to improve. And as graphic cards become more powerful, you can bet that game developers will use more demanding features - features and already could be implemented *today* but that are not because very few users would be able to run them (ex: path tracing). So in other words there are technologies already existing that are just waiting for future GPUs.

Lundurro

No, but also it's way more lenient than it used to be. It's pretty much just games that have graphics as a marketing point, like the latest AAA games, that demand the latest hardware. Otherwise games are a lot more forgiving in the power of your hardware than they used to be.

n7_trekkie

Sure, things change. We used to have sound cards, and while they still exist, it's fair to say they are endangered, borderline extinct. Video cards may go that direction in the coming decades. Not soon though

First suspect would be something isn't plugged in correctly. Got parts list and pics of the build so we could have a look?

More pixels does take a bit more CPU/GPU effort to draw, but for desktop/spreadsheety kinda stuff it generally shouldn't be *that* noticeable.

BrotherConfident8395

I'm thinking about upgrading my GPU simply to get more in 1440p in AAA games. I own a 3080 (12GB), 7 7700x, 32gb 6000mghz. I just got a 1350W PSU to upgrade my GPU. Should I wait for the new generation GPUS to come out or do you think that buying a 4090 would be the best choice with the GPU market right now? My budget is $1700 for a new GPU.

n7_trekkie

The 5080 should be announced in 2 weeks

BrotherConfident8395

Thank you, I didn't know that. I will probably wait then because I remember buying this 3080 1 week before the 40 series came out and it did not feel good.
