Is your tip clean and wiped off regularly. You didn't say it was happening just occasionally so I assume so.
Two things but the first should fix it. Your frosting is probably a little too dry which gives you the cracked edges. Try adding a tblsp of water and remixing it.
Alternatively you can try adding a little corn syrup to it to smooth it out more. If you are happy with the amount you are mixing it when you slowly add the sugar then dryness is probably your issue.
Even so its a lovely looking rose - it looks to wide apart for a 2D - which piping tip did you use?
I know you want to not have them, but I really dig the jagged edges.
However, to your question, it may be overly dry and/or, squeezing too hard on the bag.
in addition to the dryness issue others mentioned, maybe try warming your buttercream? i find when mine gets too cold i end up with craggly looking piping. but fwiw i think the jagged edges look more realistic!
I actually really like it when my petals do this, but if you don't, add a little tiny bit more liquid, or make sure the frosting is fully warmed up to room temp, if you took it out of the fridge.
Your buttercream is just a tad too stiff. When you pull the tip away from the end of the petal, the icing on the petal & the icing still in the tip are holding on to each other too long. Needs to be a bit softer. Add a tbsp (at a time) of liquid to your buttercream to smooth it out a bit.
Add a tbsp, mix, test. Repeat in single tbsp increments until it gets to the right consistency 😎
Noticed this too! When I’d pipe the buttercream, it would sort of tear at the forming petals. Going to soften the buttercream a bit more next time. Thanks :)
Thus, plus you have to balance the stiffness with how hard you're squeezing the bag, and how fast you're moving the tip. The shape and width of the narrow end of your tip also plays a part.
I personally like the edges like that on flowers, they look more realistic. However, you can just thin out your buttercream a tad, not too much or you won’t be able to pipe flowers
My roses came out like that and I was told the icing was a tad too stiff. I softened it up with a teaspoon of milk and got smooth edge petals…and I hated them. I really loved the jagged edges, so I went back to my original recipe.
I think either too dry or too cold! I have this issue too. I appreciate that it looks pretty in its own right but sometimes you just want those smooth edges and that’s okay too!
I personally think the petals look quite nice with those edges
Same. I think they look more realistic this way but I do understand why OP wants them perfect.
Yes, I feel it makes them look more realistic
Would be perfect for a carnation or peony.
Or if you add a lil orange to the mix it would be a dead wringer for a Campanella rose
Or darker pink for an Yves Piaget. But their centers are structured differently.
Right?! It gives it personality, and it looks intentional tbh
I have to agree, I can't believe this wasn't intentional, these look amazing. The most realistic frosting flowers I've seen in a while.
Same!!! I much prefer these myself
Me too. I know nothing about cake decorating, so this may be unusual, but I clicked on this from the top feed because I was surprised.
It's ok, I also know jack shit about cake decorating, I'm just here to admire other people's work 😅
Yes, beautiful! But roses in real life have smooth edges on their petals
That's true, it might be better suited to a different flower. But I would still be happy receiving a cake with flowers that look like this
Same! They’re gorgeous!
Me too yo!!!!

I agree it’s likely that it’s too dry. I wipe it every few pipes and the edges still come out cracked. And thank you! I use the No.123 Petal tip.
It could also just be too cold. Sometimes I let it sit for a little while at room temp.
You can also spread the tip open just a smidgen.
This person pipes. You, i like!
It's too stiff yeah. Add a tablespoon or two of some sort of liquid like cream or milk and that should smooth it out
I know you want to not have them, but I really dig the jagged edges. However, to your question, it may be overly dry and/or, squeezing too hard on the bag.

I love the edges ! So realistic

I like the jagged ends
Tbh I think it looks really pretty this way.
Looks good with jagged edges
In my humble opinion the jagged ends make the rose look real. Don't get rid of them!
The jagged edges are so pretty 🤩
I agree that I does look a little dry but it also looks more realistic so 🤷🏼♀️
To be honest (as someone with a rosebush) it looks way more realistic this way rather than if it was smooth
I was actually coming here to see how you achieved those jaded ends! I think it looks so cool
Ugh I love those edges
I really like it! Not the answer you wanted to but if you can’t get rid of the ragged edges they still look great
It’s actually an improvement
I LIKE the edges. Who knows - maybe there is a variety of Rose that has those edges. Looks beautiful to me.
I love the jagged edges
The edges make it looks so lifelike
I wish it was winter where I am! All my buttercream melts to a blob within 40 seconds 🥲
I hope you find a fix, just commenting to say I thought this was all intentional and it’s beautiful and amazing
Aww thank you!
carnations would look perfect with the jagged edge
It’s just a little dry is all
I like them. I think they look more realistic.
Clean your tip
OH MY
Eat it

Of course! Good luck!

Try whipping your butter until it’s fluffy before adding the sugar. The softer butter should give a smoother edge
Believe if the icing had more shortening.
It’s possibly from air bubbles, so make sure you don’t have them in your bag
It’s pretty why would you want to?
Wetter icing/ buttercream.
