You are referring to the Brier, as there has been a Team Canada at the Scotties for decades, which was the 12th team as there wasn't a Northern Ontario team at the Scotties until recently. Of course, now they have the same representation in both championships, including the same number of wild cards.
Lol I hate to say this but curling became intense when I turned 30. As a student athlete, curling is probably the only sport I can play now, safely, without hurting myself.(don't let them know curling is a pretty interesting sport to watch if you know what's going on)
Here's a guide for first timers:
Ontario and Manitoba: We could save a few bucks by sewing our coat of arms onto these old Canadian flags we found at the surplus store. Will anyone be able to tell our flags apart? Not unless they zoom in because Manitoba has Bison.
Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories: Cool idea Ontario and Manitoba. Alberta: But our surplus stores were out of old Canadian flags. Can we just sew our coat of arms to some blue fabric? NWT: How about blue *and white*? Yukon: Blue, white, green, the colour doesn't even matter.
BC: Boring ideas neighbours, and besides, our surplus store only had Union Jacks and about half as many as we need. My friend says they can print a sunset on the water and we can add a half Union Jack from the surplus store to save money... Ahh bad news my friend literally printed the sun *on the water* rather than above it. I think he might have designed it using Microsoft Word.
Newfoundland: great idea recycling the Union Jack. Our surplus stores only have white hospital sheets so we gave the job to our friend who is an artist who is known for hyperrealistic paintings and asked him to do a Union Jack from memory... Bad news though, we only gave him 3 coloured sharpies, and he was high that day.
Quebec, New Brunswick, and PEI: There was some Renaissance Faire banners in our surplus store! Quebec: Do any of them look vaguely French? New Brunswick: I call dibs on the ship! PEI: Aww that's the one I wanted. I'll take the one with the poorly scaled island, I guess.
Saskatchewan: I think a great deal about fields of wheat. Sometimes the fields are green and then they're yellow and then we harvest it. So green, yellow, and harvested wheat.
Nunavut: If we put an inukshuk on it, the people will know we're here.
Nova Scotia: Our surplus store had misprint flags of Scotland. Slap a coat of arms on there. We're all set.
Nice writeup! On the Sask flag, the green on the upper half actually represents all the forest land in the northern part of the province, and the golden yellow on the bottom half is for the wheat fields that cover the southern region of the province.
Naturally, I have a home-province bias but I really like the SK flag.
They had to switch the original design of the BC flag so that the sun was on the bottom and the Union Jack on top so that it wouldn't contradict the saying "the sun never sets on the British Empire" (because of course that's a sunset representing the fact that BC is where the country's last sunset is each day). Got told that in school, anyway.
Quebec and Nova Scotia are nice and simple.
A flag should be easy to reproduce with simple lines, colors and patterns.
NB is nice but it's almost a painting.
Nova Scotia and Quebec are certainly the best designed flags. And it's not close.
Newfoundland is my favourite, though, even if it's not the best. It's just so quirky and fun while still feeling like a flag.
Special shout out to the flag of the [Republic of Newfoundland](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newfoundland_Tricolour) while we're here.
I’d honestly argue it has longstanding historical precedent as a flag——I feel like Newfoundland’s flag is sort of just a stylized hybrid of nautical flags. The Union Jack (I believe) has some roots in the same sort of thing
It’s deep in symbolism.
In this flag, the primary colours of red, gold and blue are placed against a background of white to allow the design to stand out clearly.
White is representative of snow and ice;
Blue represents the Sea;
Red represents human effort; and
Gold our confidence in ourselves.
The Blue section, most reminiscent of the Union Jack, represents our Commonwealth heritage which has so decisively shaped our present.
The Red section and Gold section, larger than the others, represent our future.
The two triangles outlined in the picture portray the mainland and island parts of our province reaching forward together.
A golden arrow points the way to what we believe will be a bright future.
But the design of the flag encompasses much more symbolism, for example, the Christian Cross, the Beothuck and Naskapi ornamentation, the outline of the maple leaf in the centre of the flag, a triumphant figure and our place in the space age. The image of the trident stands out. This is to emphasize our continued dependence on the fishery and the resources of the sea.
Hung as a banner, the arrow assumes the aspect of a sword which is to remind us of the sacrifice of our War Veterans.
Since the whole flag resembles a Beothuck pendant as well as all of the above, the design takes us from our earliest beginnings and points us confidently forward. It therefore, mirrors our past, present and future.
The flag was officially adopted on June 6, 1980.
What confuses me is that Manitoba more or less exists as it is because of rebellion against the British Crown, so it's wild that it's a British Ensign of all things
Nova Scotia because it makes it perfectly clear as to its origins - a reverse-colour St Andrew's cross scutcheoned with the Scottish lion rampant.
I also love Newfoundland and Labrador's flag - the Pratt flag that acknowledges the province's roots. The tricolour bandied about was never the official provincial flag and has historically a sectarian flag.
I’m a Newfoundlander and I like the tricolour more than the Pratt flag because it reminds me of our history of self-governance, and our distinct culture. (The dominion ensign flag is ugly so we don’t really care for it.)
People just decided and continue to decide that they like the tricolour. I just found a comment on another thread that sums up my thoughts on it perfectly:
“The Tricolour exists because a number of Newfoundlanders like it and identify with it, while the Pratt flag exists because the government implemented it by fiat. I'm partial to the tricolour just for the pure beautiful contrariness of it.”
I do recognize and appreciate the thought Pratt put into each part of his flag, though. Especially the references to our indigenous peoples.
For the same reason too. People were mad that Canada was replacing the Red Ensign and so Ontario and Manitoba made their flags variations of the Red Ensign.
Personally I like Saskatchewan. It’s the province of my birth so I have a natural favouritism towards it but I also know the idea behind it. The green and yellow represent the divide between the forest in the north and the grain fields of the south. The tiger lily is our provincial flower and a very beautiful one at that. I won’t pretend to know the coat of arms but yeah… sasky will always have a special place in my heart.
NL flag checks all the boxes for good flag design. It is the best IMO and I had to scroll way too far to find this. NS is also great but the lion is hard to draw from memory.
And they all forgot Labrador. Poor Labrador gets no play ever. Apparently it’s “unofficial” but it’s a [nice one](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Labrador).
Quebec is the nicest, looks more like an actual flag than all the other with images in it.
Newfoundland, Nunavut, Saskatchewan and Nova scotia are also nice.
Quebec followed by Nunavut.
The rest are either too busy, are emblems/shields, are lazy, or are blantant ripoffs with zero originality to them. I'm looking at you Ontario and Manitoba.
New Brunswick is nicest in a 19th Century kind of way. For a more modern design, I'll take Newfoundland.
Ontario and Manitoba are the least inspired designs, especially given the old Red Ensign and Alberta looks like an awful lot of US state flags.
Prince Edward Island.
The upper third of the flag features the English heraldic lion which appeared both on the coat of arms of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, for whom the province is named, and on that of King Edward VII. The lower two-thirds show an island on which appear three small oak saplings (on the left) – representing the three counties of PEI (Prince, Queens, and Kings) – under the protection of a great oak tree which represents Great Britain. The three sides away from the mast are bordered by alternating bands of red and white.
I find the BC flag looks substantially better on an actual flag in real life than in a photo. That might be true for any flag with lots of horizontal lines.
As an actual flag it's one of my favorites (home province bias tho). But when it's a piece of clip art of the flag I'm not nearly so keen.
Compared to say Nunavut which I think looks good as a flag, but even better as clip art.
Nova Scotia, and, having looked them all up, Newfoundland.
Ontario and Manitoba look like they tried to start a trend and it didn't take off. I initally thought Ontario was on there twice.
Interesting fact - Heraldic elements of a flag must be approved by an authority, and so when BC decided to slap the Royal Union in their flag everyone was very unimpressed. They repeatedly told us to knock it off and we simply ignored them until Queen Elizabeth finally threw up her hands and approved it somewhat recently.
So for a large portion of BC history, our flag has been completely unauthorized.
I like Canada's flag. It's simple, pretty and meaningful.
Quebec is smooth and Nunavut has a very strong cultural meaning.
Ontario and Manitoba looks like a cheap photo collages, something that the nephew of the owner of a design company assigned to the task would do in a rush with Microsoft Paintbrush just after learning what Windows 95 was.
I would rather have the coat of arms bigger in the middle and drop that british piece.
New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador have my favourite provincial flags. The Ontario and Manitoba hace the worst flags. They look the same and have the Union Jack.
I like New Brunswick because it has cool looking boat. I'm from BC, and wouldn't mind us dropping the union jack. Even though I'm from BC, I feel neither very British nor very Columbian.
Flags from top right corner, and going clockwise:
1- Nunavut
2- Saskatchewan
3- Ontario
4- BC.
5- New Brunswick
6- Nova Scotia
7- Quebec
8- PE Island
9- NWT
10- Yukon
11- Alberta
12- Manitoba
13- Newfoundland
Party game, get your friends to draw your provincial flag from memory. Put the worst one up on the wall (Sorry, I don't throw good parties)
That sounds like a great party game. Look for the Canadian citizenship practice test. I promise it will be a good time.
Most miserable Xmas ever. Husband is American, trying for citizenship. Family took the test "as a joke." God damn.
Very Canadian... I would never imagine that in Brazil.
>(Sorry, I don't throw good parties) I was about to say, where do the drinks come in?
When the person makes a mistake of course.
Bold of you to assume that I know which flag goes with which province.

I like the SK flag, and I'm from MB - so you know there is no bias.
It's the only thing that Saskatchewan does better than Manitoba, so you know that hurts me to admit it.
thanks that helped me a lot I could only figure out nunavut from the looks
They had to switch the original design of the BC flag so that the sun was on the bottom and the Union Jack on top so that it wouldn't contradict the saying "the sun never sets on the British Empire" (because of course that's a sunset representing the fact that BC is where the country's last sunset is each day). I'm convinced that story is ahistorical apocrypha... poetic as it is. I think it has more to do with heraldry conventions: boring, bureaucratic rules.
Love this, I now know them. Thank you.
This is hilarious!
Probably not far from the truth, well done.
Omg, BCs flag is so the Microsoft word experience of the bunch.
You couldn't have said it better.
You didn't learn this in grade school? I remember we had units about drawing and matching these way back when.
Learning it is one thing. Retaining it is a whole *other* thing.
Yeah, that's totally fair! I remember drawing the new Brunswick flag and making it a pirate ship instead.
Well, one of those flags didn’t exist when I was in high school.
Nunavut?
No, some of them did.
Eeehhhhhhhhhh! This guy.
😂 See whatcha did there!
When I was in grade school we had *different* provinces/territories.

Nova Scotia. I’m not even from NS but I love it there
I'm biased because I am from there, but it's clearly the best in terms of design. Unique while also easy to recognize.
It’s the Scottish flag with a lion in the middle. Can’t get much more on-the-nose, considering the province’s name is literally “New Scotland”! Lol!
I think Nunavut’s sis pretty great.
Unique? It’s just the inverse of Scotland with added Scottish coat of arms. (They don’t call it Nova Scotia for nothing)
Nunavut probably. Unique, simple, but not too simple. As someone from BC I still have nightmares being made to draw the flag in elementary.
I remember doing that. Our flag is way too fucking busy. I like the sun in front of the waves, but why did we smash a Union Jack onto the top?
My guess would be that it’s kinda in the name - “British” Columbia.
That's true, but I think the result speaks for itself (worst provincial flag). I love this province but our flag is a hot mess.
Honestly I find it to be so ugly that it loops around to being beautiful. Best flag cause it's bold!
It’s the best one actually
My tight thoughts exactly
I agree 100%
Nova Scotia and Quebec
Me too, dude. NS is iconic and gets the point across, and Quebec is a beautiful reminder of its history. My favourite province other than my home.
Nobody digs Nunavut's flag here?
I love it. Nunavut and Quebec have the best flags. I also like PEI's.

Agreed, I'm a french canadian from Ontario and I'm a little jealous, it's a gorgeous flag.
Le drapeau franco-ontarien n'est pas piqué des vers non plus
Can we get a shoutout for the Franco-Ontarien flag? One of my favs
Quebec
QUÉBEC 🔛🔝
New Brunswick is nicest. Quebec is simple but pleasing. Ontario and Manitoba are joint last by far - uninspiring and basically the same.
The bison is a sick I like it
Why would they put a sick bison on it? Does it represent the state of healthcare?
Nah it can kick-flip, big skateboard community
Manitoba is better than Ontario’s. At least it has a cool bison.
Two flags designed as acts of frustration.
I like the Sask flag mostly because I like the colours. -An Ontarian with a shitty flag.
I also love Nunavut for its simplicity. Like Goldilocks said, “just right”.
The symbolism of the colors is neat as well. Grain belt of the south vs. forested half of the north.
Join the club! Manitoba here, ours is just as shitty as yours because it is almost exactly alike lol...!
For the same reason too. People were mad that Canada was replacing the Red Ensign and so Ontario and Manitoba made their flags variations of the Red Ensign.
It's ridiculous given Manitoba's history as well, like why would Manitoba of all provinces have a British Ensign as the base of its flag?
Conservative provincial governments who hated Pearson for geting rid of the flag that Canada fought under in two world wars.
I feel like Manitoba is probably the most likely province to have a flag redesign in the future.
Nunavut for sure!
There is something about the Nunavut flag. Definitely my favourite. Followed by Alberta and Quebec.
These are my top three. I just wish the graphics in Alberta's crest were more stylized. It's hard to draw.
The Alberta crest accurately depicts southern Alberta if you are facing west. The Saskatchewan flag is for when you’re facing east
Clearly the province that has a pirate ship.
New Brunswick. They had a massive ship building industry.
Quebec has a nice flag
Newfoundland! Most modern, graphically, for obvious reasons. I come from away, so no bias.
NL flag checks all the boxes for good flag design. It is the best IMO and I had to scroll way too far to find this. NS is also great but the lion is hard to draw from memory.

I was hoping someone would mention the Labrador flag. I really dig it.
Labrador isn't a province. The Newfoundland and Labrador flag is up there.
I have high confidence in identifying 2 of those flags correctly off the top of my head, so I’ll say Quebec and Nova Scotia are my favourite.
NFL and NS
Quebec is the nicest, looks more like an actual flag than all the other with images in it. Newfoundland, Nunavut, Saskatchewan and Nova scotia are also nice.
New Brunswick
Newfoundland. Just because that’s where I’m from
With a username like that, who would have guessed?
IMHO Nova Scotia one is the best Followed bu Nunavut and Quebec.
Quebec followed by Nunavut. The rest are either too busy, are emblems/shields, are lazy, or are blantant ripoffs with zero originality to them. I'm looking at you Ontario and Manitoba.
I really like Nova Scotia's flag. Quebec and Alberta also have a nice one.
Nova Scotia, but it’s because I’m Scottish. :)
Quebec easy. Great design.
Quebec, but I’m a Québécois so I’m biased. I also like Canada, Alberta, NFL and Nunavut.
Nova Scotia and Quebec. Simple designs but still stand out.
This heat wave in BC is going to my head. When I read "NFL" it took me a minute to realize you didn't meant the National Football League.
I should have said TNL (Terre-Neuve et Labrador) just to mess with you.
I would have assumed you meant TMNT teenage mutant ninja turtles.
Quebec hands down and I’m from Ontario
As a collective they are all very nice, much better than US state flags. I would say my favourite is New Brunswick.
NB's flag is so cool. One of my favourite in general. The colour tones work so well. The badass ship. So cool
Maybe the bad ones ruin it for the rest (also there's 50) but many US state flags are nice
Nova Scotia, I’m from Ontario
New Brunswick is nicest in a 19th Century kind of way. For a more modern design, I'll take Newfoundland. Ontario and Manitoba are the least inspired designs, especially given the old Red Ensign and Alberta looks like an awful lot of US state flags.
Newfoundland

Nfld and nunavut
Alberta.
Nova Scotia, and, having looked them all up, Newfoundland. Ontario and Manitoba look like they tried to start a trend and it didn't take off. I initally thought Ontario was on there twice.
Nova Scotia (although biased since I’m from here 😂)
Nova Scotia! After that would be Nunavut and Quebec
Nova Scotia!!!!!!!
Quebec's is a classic and BC's is too busy.
New Brunswick - no contest, it has a sick boat.
New Brunswick has the best flag and it's not even close.
I like New Brunswick because it has pirate ship vibe and Quebec because it is concise. I am from Ontario our flag sucks.
I like whatever that giant sun scalding the Union Jack looking flaggo is.

Interesting fact - Heraldic elements of a flag must be approved by an authority, and so when BC decided to slap the Royal Union in their flag everyone was very unimpressed. Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, and Nova Scotia in my opinion. New Brunswick is good too.
Easily nfld
I've always loved New Brunswick's flag. That ship is so cool.
Biased but NB is the best. Got a goddamn boat and a stretched out feline.
The one with the ship is sick!
Nova Scotia = New Scotland in English... just pick the one that resembles the Scottish flag and you'll be correct.
I think Ontario’s is the nicest and Manitoba’s is the ugliest
New Brunswick hands down
Nova Scotia all the way
New Brunswick is nicest but a sinking ship would be more realistic
New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador have my favourite provincial flags. The Ontario and Manitoba hace the worst flags. They look the same and have the Union Jack.
I agree with CGP Grey that The national and Quebec flags are the best ones
New Brunswick
New Brunswick or Nunavut!!
The NB flag kicks ass.
I like New Brunswick because it has cool looking boat. I'm from BC, and wouldn't mind us dropping the union jack. Even though I'm from BC, I feel neither very British nor very Columbian.
Quebec nova scotia newfoundland and nunavut
Quebec, and it’s not even close
Gotta go with Nova Scotia. East Coast baby, I miss it so much.
Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia
I like NFLD. I never understood the boat in NB… and I am from there. Doesn’t look like a real sailing vessel.
New Brunswick, then Nova Scotia.
New Brunswick is the one I'd want most airbrushed on the side of my van
NB has a cool flag. I also like the NS flag.
Nova Scotia
NFLD ftw
The one with the boat is kinda dope. Gonna have to assume that’s Newfoundland. The one with the crazy ass sun is cool too. These provinces go hard.
That's New Brunswick. Newfoundland is the postmodern deconstructed Union Jack.
1. Quebec 2. Newf 3. My Alberta
BC. I love the sunshine
I’m biased, but BC!
PEI. I've always been a sucker for that derpy lion(?)
BC
Quebec 110%
I'm not Canadian, but its Quebec for me
Quebec.
I love BC’s, NB’s, and Quebec’s.
The Quebec flag is actually trying to be good enough for a country.
