My friend left a box of these in my car. I was super psyched- fruit candy!! So I popped 5 or 6 of them in my mouth and about threw up. Not fruit not fruit!! Licorice- yuch!! I spit them back into the box.

Wow, that’s some good self-control there. I will do a box or week if they’re around. Also, if you like licorice, my wife got me the large sampler from licorice.com, it was really good and absolutely worth it. Their black licorice was really good, definitely my favorite out of easily found commercial brands. But Good & Plenty is the value king.

Every Sunday I looked forward to going to church because it meant candy at granny’s afterwards. Sometimes she had these. And I would smash them and lift rocks looking for “Rollie pollies” that wanted to eat the smashings. Thank you for removing these from rotation.

I was delighted to find a cheap 5lb bag on Amazon. Then I leaned about black licorice toxicity and had to ration it out to myself at safe levels. It was SO DIFFICULT. Team Good and Plenty!

There’s not much pure licorice in Good & Plenty. What you have to be careful of is the pure licorice, like Panda licorice or another brand that doesn’t put licorice in a coating. Also, you have to eat a LOT of pure licorice to get sick.

Can I ask OP, what does black licorice taste like to you? Cause I have tried Good and Plenties, black jelly beans, and even the actual black licorice and I just can't stomach the flavor. But I know each person's taste buds run differently.

my desire for black licorice isn't consistent, sometimes I really enjoy it and other times it's the most disgusting thing (that i imagine is similar to what most people feel when they say they hate black licorice). there's no difference in how it literally tastes, just whether I'm actually craving that flavor or not.

jelly belly also makes a similar candy called licorice pastels - you can order them in 1 lb bags and they are pretty much exactly the same as good&plenty, except they are always fresh in my experience. too many times I've bought an package of 'still good' good&plenty and they are hard as rocks the licorice pastels actually used to be much thinner (which i actually liked more), but now are exactly the same size as good&plenty because they changed manufacturers

I didn’t know people actually ate those.

My mom always had these hiding in a drawer so my dad wouldn’t eat them. Once and a while as a child I’d sneak one or two (one purple and one white of course). I never liked them, but I’d still sneak them sporadically. Now, some 30 years later, I might catch a glimpse of those at a random store and pick them up for some sweet sweet memories of simpler times filled with happiness. A box will last me months, which is great cause these things don’t seem to expire.
