Some carmax's will honor adding a feature if it was listed on the website and you purchased it. I sold a Cruze with no cruise control when it showed on the website, and our service team paid for chevy to install it in my customers car post purchase.

jmt5179

Thanks for the reply. Hoping if I find for certain there's no remote start that they would consider doing this.

warrhino67

I'm rooting for you!

VegetableCapable2820

How many CarMax windbreakers do you have?

warrhino67

Just the 1 lol

VegetableCapable2820

How many polos do you have?

Does the remote start work from a key or a phone app? I thought my wife’s car had remote start, couldn’t see it on her key (it’s a new car) and later found it’s accessed through an app on her phone.

jmt5179

I would have thought the key but there is no remote start button. Just downloaded the app but it says it doesn't work for 2019 and older vehicles.

04stx

I do believe that the remote start on Tiguan’s is done via key fob. A former friend of mine owns one I’m pretty sure that’s where it’s at. I believe hers is a 2020, so I don’t know how much 1 year would impact it.

Cute_Marsupial7018

Would honestly just return the car, tiguans suck

[deleted]

What friends best friend’s dads grandmas story is this?

04stx

While I wouldn’t have worded it the way he did, the Tiguan doesn’t fair well. It literally ranked 26 out of 26 in compact SUV’s.

jmt5179

On what list? Just wondering because I've done my research and it seems like the 2019 is said to be reliable and well rated. We really like it so far but given we have the 30 days we'll be certain whether or not we want to keep it.

throwaway1274940

The 2018+ tiguans and Audi q5’s are more reliable than the previous generation. My 2014 q5 had multiple recalls and issues with oil consumption, the differential, etc.

foshiggityshiggity

I had a 2016 q5. Consumed a qt of oil ever 400 miles. At 69k it burnt a valve and died. Worst purchase ever. Did all maintenance on time... never again.

throwaway1274940

Yep, dumped my q5 at 92k miles in 2022, wasn’t worth the cost of getting the engine rebuilt. Mine was burning 1qt of oil every time I refilled the gas tank.

foshiggityshiggity

They wanted 16k for the engine. 12k for the engine alone before labor. Its a shame though because it really rode like a dream when it wasnt draining my wallet. Id only lease one in the future. Never buying again lol. Also mine ate through front tirea and cv axles....

04stx

I think the main issue with Volkswagen’s (or any German car, really) is the maintenance. You bought it used so you don’t know if they kept up on everything. If I bought it brand new, I wouldn’t worry too much about it because I would know what’s been done to it and what hasn’t been done. Maintenance on the Tiguan will be more expensive than a comparable SUV. I’m not implying that you made a bad decision in buying it, it’s just not something I would do and I wouldn’t recommend a friend or loved one to buy one use.

[deleted]

Even behind the Compass?! Ooooof lol

Odd-Knowledge69

they will install it for you via a vendor

myopini0n

No, they won’t. We used to offer a remote start option. We no longer do that.

Baned_user_1987

They will definitely not, had this exact experience as well as many other horrible customer service issues. Definitely avoid buying from Carmax in Winston Salem NC if you are considering.

Odd-Recording7030

Depends. I bought a car that said it has keyless entry. It doesn’t. We went to them and they couldn’t fix it. That was that.

newatfsu

be prepared to return the car

stranger242

Are you using it right? Because google says your model has it

NoRecommendation8382

Anyway, on my Tiguan I have to click the lock button then the round button 2 times.

myopini0n

Unless it is part of a larger trim level, it doesn’t really impact the price. they can verify that it was priced correctly. Sounds like it was most likely just miss optioned unless it comes on that trim level.

jmt5179

The car had a 9 "loaded" trim level on carmax. Perhaps it's still priced correctly but having remote start listed as a feature did play into our decision.

[deleted]

German/euro cars don’t have this installed at the factory because of EU laws against idling. Is it really that big of a deal? We’re getting to the point where these little bells and whistles are just causing more trouble then they’re worth

04stx

I agree that bells and whistles cause more problems than they’re worth, but remote start is different. When it’s 110 Fahrenheit degrees outside, you are going to be PISSED when the car you bought doesn’t have remote start when you thought it did.

ne0tas

Remote start is far from a bell and whistle when you live in cold climates

NoRecommendation8382

Wym? Having my car heated and my heated seats already on has been TOP TIER!

[deleted]

Not good for your engine anyways. “Warming up the car” has long been discouraged by many auto makers, including VW. Bad for your engine, bad for environment. You want to warm your car up by driving, not too hard, but driving nonetheless.

jmt5179

We generally use remote start as a way to start melting the ice off the vehicle and have it not freezing inside, especially for our kids. Or in the heat of summer to get the cab cooling down.

04stx

While it might not be good for the motor, it isn’t bad for it. 99.9% of the people using remote start aren’t using it under the pretext of warming up their car to prevent damage. They’re doing it because they don’t want to sit in an oven while the car cools down. Or they won’t want to sit in a freezer while the car warms up. The remaining percentage probably do it because they feel like it’s better for the motor.

savedmoss

This is wrong. This only applies when they are built in Germany/EU for VW. When built in Mexico/US they can come with remote start as an option
