I know this is a meme post but 4kids was a LOT of peoples entry source of exposure to anime and other media that never got any traction on other channels. Not everyones family could afford CN, Nick, Disney etc. etc.
Sure it has it's issues, but as kids most of us didn't care we were just happy there was something to watch, and the rest of us grew up into chronically online douchebags.
we can talk shit about 4Kids all day but little me absolutely loved and looked forward to Saturday morning cartoons.
With all the streaming services and technology updates, kids today will never know the joy of waking up early with a bowl of cereal to watch banger after banger!! Also this was 20 years ago, but it’s wild that those three (One Piece, Pokémon, yugioh) are still gargantuans in our culture today!
For some reason it felt like Sonic X started over and over again growing up. I'd be watching them in space then a month later it's back to sonic falling in the pool. I was convinced the show had like 4 or 5 episodes.
Ppl hate way, WAY too much on 4kids because, “4kiDs CeNsOreD BoObIEs”.
4kids was the reason anime exploded the way it did in the 2000s.
Pokemon, Yugioh, One Piece, all cornerstones that succeeded so much, it convinced Japan to send even more anime over here to dub & popularize
Not only popularize but make it **ACCESSIBLE** to watch
Yall remember searching high & low to watch undubbed, (maybe unsubbed) pixelated anime episodes on Youtube & other fishy sites?
Now we have Crunchy roll & other channels dedicated to providing us anime in a simple & easy way
*4kids started that*
4kids is the reason we dont have to scavenge the internet to discover new anime
Haters are gonna miss me with that “fuck 4kids, because titties” bullshit
Im not even the biggest anime fan either.
I just know 4kids gave me Yugioh & Pokemon & thats the most important thing
> Yall remember searching high & low to watch undubbed, (maybe unsubbed) pixelated anime episodes on Youtube & other fishy sites?
I am not the only one who remembers having to push through all the viruses and bullshit that those shitty sites gave my dad’s computer instead of just giving me a simple episode of ultimate muscle. I would’ve probably just given up on anime out of spite as a kid if 4kids and Toonami’s later website didn’t give me options
That’s something people don’t bring up enough. The broadcasting standards, and the people put them in the place are to blame. Not the channel that was literally just following the rules they needed to in order to share a product to the American market.
Yes, 4kids wasn't the greatest company or nothing, but the anime industry as we know it wouldn't exist without them, and I like a good chunk of their openings, I find most japanese openings too sappy, I like them to be more snappy.
Agreed. Was it perfect? Hell no! Could it have been better? Yes. But for a long time it provided so many people with so many fond memories that I personally feel like the trade-off was absolutely worth it.
For as much flack as they get, they know how to make some banger ass theme songs.
Pokemon from Kanto to Hoenn
Sonic X
TMNT 2003
Their theme songs were godly!
As goofy as it was, I also kinda love the One Piece rap. I didn't really watch the dub as a kid and got into One Piece later on through the manga, so the rap is just funny to me.
https://preview.redd.it/xv0dlq9bej9d1.jpeg?width=480&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f15f0a7aa64c048dd100b3e12dd5086ca05ef6d5
“LUFFY!!!”
As bad as the dub was, this was gold
I know I've heard the original opening, but I couldn't remember a damn second of it if you held a gun to my head. In my mind and in my heart, there is only the One Piece rap.
They helped Peter Laird & Mirage Studios give us the 2003 TMNT series, still my favorite version of the series to date.
https://preview.redd.it/ai00ej2smj9d1.png?width=1440&format=png&auto=webp&s=56bfa2b27efb854d62f0ddfc2c87b94c83e556ce
Same, that Ninja Turtles series is what I grew up with as a kid and the versions of the characters that immediately come to mind for when I think of TMNT.
Not just that, but the random civilians getting horrifically murdered (implied off-screen) by monsters all the time. Shit was scary for a kid. Incredible how they got that past 4Kids.
It was my introduction to the series (then I got the 90s movie on vhs), and one I still look back on fondly.
In terms of animation and overall art inspirations, this is still one of my biggest (easily in a top 3), and one I find myself rewatching often when I sit down to draw. The writing, the character designs, the fight scenes, the animation, the list goes.
The fight scenes are especially fun to revist and analyze, both from a narrative and art perspective. Such as when the Turtles swapped weapons to defeat the Turtle-Bot made by Stockman, or the many Shredder fight scenes, or the Bishop fight scenes and many more I'm sure fellow fans can recall.
Made more awe-inspiring from the fact I heard the average singular fight scene took a lot of storyboards prior.
And of course. The theme song.
All in all, a series I'm sure many are still surprised to be from 4Kids of all people and one many other TMNT fans credit as their introduction to the larger franchise.
And one that makes me happy when I hear other newer TMNT fans get into the series, and they decide to check this out after getting through another version of TMNT. Hearing their reactions, both contrasts and parallels to my own experiences watching this, always makes me smile.
Their writing for Kaiba is genuinely gold. Everything is either hilariously awesome or hilariously douchy and I love it
"Anyone caught late for registration will be disqualified. Mokuba, make sure Wheeler is late."
"Fire whoever made that bottle, KaibaCorp products shouldn't been so easily."
From what I heard, Kaiba in the og version acknowledged it, he just didn’t care. But yeah, 4Kids Kaiba would just deny that shit until his last breath.
"So you've got a dweeb army. Am I supposed to be scared to attack?"
"Well. Only if destroying an innocent soul concerns you."
"Nah. As the president of a major corporation: **I get to do that every day**."

KIRBY, KIRBY, HE'S THE STAR OF THE SHOW !!!!!!!
Somebody made an updated version of it to include all of the new crew members. It's set to one of the newest opening that was an updated version of the original opening with all of the new characters added in.
There was lots of cool voice actors. Some examples are Jason Griffith, Dan Green, Lisa Ortiz, Veronica Taylor and Ted Lewis. A lot of them got popular because of 4kids.
This was the gateway for kids finding anime. Plus, they gave us Ted Lewis as King Dedede and the opening for Right Back at Ya, which I think is far superior to the Japanese opening theme. These were blessings on the world.
Sone of us kids didn’t have cable, and had no way of watching Toonami or adult swim anime
This was my “Saturday morning” If people can be nostalgic about cheesy 80s shows that weren’t very good than why not these shows
Everyone always mentions the one piece dub but they had other shows that I don’t think are that bad to this day
And every show they ever had a dub for has an alternate dub now im pretty sure
i unironically think the OP 4kids dub is fun and is a reason a lot of people fell in love with OP. especially the rap. this applies to a lot of the anime/shows on there. i think if they were more faithful and less goofy it wouldnt have hit the same.
a lot of what they did was super over the top goofy but i think it was what kids wanted to see at that time period ( i know i did ) and it a lot of peoples hate is them trying to sound cool.
4kidz has some good voice actors. I'm biased since I grew up on yugioh, but I genuinely think the casting and voice acting for it is great. Dan Green and Eric Stewart are iconic as Yugi and Kaiba, and even though the censorship and localization detracts from it, the performances definitely make up for it
They alongside FUNimation (who also distributed 4kids shows that weren’t Pokémon(was distributed by VIZ and Pioneer) on physical media in the 2000s), VIZ, Bandai, Saban, DIC, and Pioneer/Geneon introduced anime to kids back when anime wasn’t a thing, was considered adult, or people didn’t know it was anime.

The Pokemon anime was my favorite cartoon as a small child, and technically my first anime, even though I didn't realize it at the time, (Inuyasha was the first one where I realized there was something different about anime compared to American animation), the Yu-Gi-Oh dub is legendary, their intro songs are all absolute bangers, much moreso than the originals, their changes and censors ranged from the pointless to the hilarious and gave us memes like the Shadow Realm or Brock calling a rice ball a jelly donut, and they were my Saturday Morning for years. There's just nothing to hate unless you hate fun, had no childhood, or are the worst kind of nerd.
As someone with a 5 year old, I have a lot more appreciation for the censoring now. We’re trying to watch One Piece on Crunchyroll and there’s so much profanity for what is supposed to be a kid’s show in Japan.

Their music composition was absolute fire.
Most of the music you hear in the English Pokémon dub, as well as multiple other dubs that bought the rights to Pokémon, was composed by 4kids. My favorite is the Team Rocket theme.
They did the best that they could do with what they were working with. Its not easy to adapt a show to completely different cultures, and sure, maybe they just straight up shouldn't do that, but remember with the time they probably weren't allowed to just leave it be.
And especially forgive them with One Piece, they were strong armed into that one
It was the only way to watch magical girl shows at the time. I know the original dubs were way better, but it was a good introduction and the music was good too, especially in mew mew power
Prepare for one piece its the name of the treasure on the grand line! Set sail for one piece! ( probably messed the words up but that intro was a banger)
For better or worse the dubs gave us a lot of memories. For the longest time I didn’t understand why Ash and his friends are so many jelly donuts of why they were shaped like that
They helped bring us the 2003 TMNT.
Other than that, if I had a time machine, I’d have gone back and try to convince the 4Kids execs to try and sell One Piece as a show for Prime Time television rather than Saturday Mornings. That way they could release the show uncut.
Gave us a lot of memes and concepts. Imagine a timeline where "Shadow Real", the abridged series, "It should have been me" and ..."you activated my trap card". Also introduced a lot of anime to a lot of people and also not having it be at the hours of midnight to five am on cable tv and instead daytime on public tv.
Well, I'm glad they were able to give us TMNT 03, and let them get away with so much.
I think the only things they did with TMNT was not air the ninja tribunal arc, not air Insane in the membrane, and pull one episode from production
Yugioh abridged creator littlekuriboh was often a copyright target for 4kids and his series and YouTube channel was banned various times in its early years.
So when 4kids went bankrupt littlekuriboh made reference to it in [this](https://youtu.be/lEEDMahLnqQ?si=oWvvIcZy4AlUdddu) episode of yugioh abridged. Honestly i think given whats happened between them i feel this was the best way to look at it
I know this is a meme post but 4kids was a LOT of peoples entry source of exposure to anime and other media that never got any traction on other channels. Yeah i agree, i liked sonic x despite its many issues *cough*chris*cough*, pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh were also nice additions
we can talk shit about 4Kids all day but little me absolutely loved and looked forward to Saturday morning cartoons. With all the streaming services and technology updates, kids today will never know the joy of waking up early with a bowl of cereal to watch banger after banger!! Also this was 20 years ago, but it’s wild that those three (One Piece, Pokémon, yugioh) are still gargantuans in our culture today!
I know I’m Gen Z but cable and cereal was a bop on Saturday
4Kids was actually where I first watched those three! Now I’m knee-deep in being obsessed with those same three like it’s crack.
For some reason it felt like Sonic X started over and over again growing up. I'd be watching them in space then a month later it's back to sonic falling in the pool. I was convinced the show had like 4 or 5 episodes.
I loved Sonic X! Sure, Chris was an unnecessary piece of the whole thing, but it was cool to see the Sonic Adventure era get shown!
Season 3 of Sonic X was also pretty cool and tamed Chris down imo
Sonic X was 4kids? Last time I watched it dubbed, when I was probably like nine, it was awesome!
We got Dan Green out of 4kids. That alone was worth everything else.
And Mike Pollock.

Plus you can't blame 4kids for adapting these shows for AMERICAN broadcasting standards. Plus those standards are there for a reason.
That’s something people don’t bring up enough. The broadcasting standards, and the people put them in the place are to blame. Not the channel that was literally just following the rules they needed to in order to share a product to the American market.
Do we have any love for the late Kiss Cartoon/Kiss Anime? Those websites were the shit back in the day!
ON GOD!
Yes, 4kids wasn't the greatest company or nothing, but the anime industry as we know it wouldn't exist without them, and I like a good chunk of their openings, I find most japanese openings too sappy, I like them to be more snappy.
My issue is more that a lot of their censorship treated kids like idiots.
Agreed. Was it perfect? Hell no! Could it have been better? Yes. But for a long time it provided so many people with so many fond memories that I personally feel like the trade-off was absolutely worth it.
Yeah was a blessing for us poorer kids.My Dads place had cable, but not the apartments my mom had usually.
This 100%! I remember watching it as a kid and being like "WOW!!" Some of my best moments come from Anime!
Saturday morning cartoons man. Wouldn't have grown up with anime without this on basic cable.
Huge agree on this take
Jason Griffith, that is all
"Yo, Shining, get in the robot! Your dad loves you, get in the robot! Don't eat a rice ball, wat a doughnut! Kick some butt in your robot!"
For as much flack as they get, they know how to make some banger ass theme songs. Pokemon from Kanto to Hoenn Sonic X TMNT 2003 Their theme songs were godly!

I remember people who read Shonen Jump while it was running One Piece debating with the people who watched One Piece on 4Kids
The opening for Johto lives rent free in my head.
Still one of my favorite Pokemon songs.
And Yu-Gi-Oh
IT’S TIME TO D-D-D-D-DDDUEL!
Hard to believe that the Pokémon theme song was actually written by 4Kids. Very good song.

Don't you mean held a.......... Whatever tf Helmepo is holding..... To your head?
Wow. That was a memory
I don’t care what anyone says that opening song was glorious
Hey luffy! It’s good to see ya buddy! save it! LUFFY!
They showed me anime, and viva pinata, and Kirby.
They're the reason why the "Shadow Realm" exists
They brought us this happy boi. https://preview.redd.it/ubiceyfvlj9d1.png?width=525&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c0302478c47ed193f8cd25a23f8e914a1767daf3
I **ADORED** the snot out of Kirby Right Back At Ya! It's so distinct and silly, my daughter and I watch it on occasion.
And that incredible Dedede voice
I need a monster to clobbah that there Kirby
You betta git him or our money back Garunteed!
Lol in addition to that I rise you Metaknights AWESOME voice!!! My boi sounding like Zoro over there!!!!
Meta Knight *spanish guitar* was pretty good.
Imma get that there Kirby!
Metaknight's voice is canonically spanish-accented because of this dub
They helped Peter Laird & Mirage Studios give us the 2003 TMNT series, still my favorite version of the series to date. https://preview.redd.it/ai00ej2smj9d1.png?width=1440&format=png&auto=webp&s=56bfa2b27efb854d62f0ddfc2c87b94c83e556ce
Same, that Ninja Turtles series is what I grew up with as a kid and the versions of the characters that immediately come to mind for when I think of TMNT.
The Baxter Stockman plotline was gloriously dark. I’m honestly surprised that got approved.
Not just that, but the random civilians getting horrifically murdered (implied off-screen) by monsters all the time. Shit was scary for a kid. Incredible how they got that past 4Kids.
Each episode was a masterpiece.

Without 4Kids, we wouldn’t have our favorite Abridged series to be based on.
I as well love Yugioh Abridged
To this day, I have quotes living in my head rent free, that I randomly blurt out. “My voice gives me super strength!”
"...in America!"
"Check his pulse, Yugi!"
Was just about to say this! The Yugioh 4kids dubs inspired Team Four Star who in turned inspired every abridged series to this day!
I thought LittleKuriboh did the first bridge with Yugioh, and even then, Lanipator and MasakoX were doing Yu Yu Hakashow
Correct. It started with LittleKuriboh, and Kaiba demanding if Yugi's balls had just dropped.
I thought it was sailor moon abridged....huh. ok. Either way they all made me laugh back in the day
i thought LittleKuriboh was TFS?
No, but he did Cameoed.
Not officially, but he shows up on many of their projects.
Their writing for Kaiba is genuinely gold. Everything is either hilariously awesome or hilariously douchy and I love it "Anyone caught late for registration will be disqualified. Mokuba, make sure Wheeler is late." "Fire whoever made that bottle, KaibaCorp products shouldn't been so easily."
Kaiba is such an atheist and against magic that it's fucking hilarious. Dude can just never give magic and actual monsters a shot.
From what I heard, Kaiba in the og version acknowledged it, he just didn’t care. But yeah, 4Kids Kaiba would just deny that shit until his last breath.
"So you've got a dweeb army. Am I supposed to be scared to attack?" "Well. Only if destroying an innocent soul concerns you." "Nah. As the president of a major corporation: **I get to do that every day**."
Kirby: Right Back At Ya ! Such a banger

Black cloak Luffy in the revamp is awesome
It let kids be able to enjoy shows like Yugioh and helped make it popular in the states.
There was lots of cool voice actors. Some examples are Jason Griffith, Dan Green, Lisa Ortiz, Veronica Taylor and Ted Lewis. A lot of them got popular because of 4kids.
Sonic X is the reason why I'm an artist
This was the gateway for kids finding anime. Plus, they gave us Ted Lewis as King Dedede and the opening for Right Back at Ya, which I think is far superior to the Japanese opening theme. These were blessings on the world.

Better than 3kids

Pokemon was my childhood
We wouldn’t have the Pokémon theme song without them!
Censoring death to THE SHADOW REALM in Yugioh honestly is much better than just having actual death and it became such an iconic thing for a reason
Yugioh and Pokemon had great background music and chaotic was their best original show ever!
They brought us Lucario and the Mystery of Mew’s dub.
i unironically think the OP 4kids dub is fun and is a reason a lot of people fell in love with OP. especially the rap. this applies to a lot of the anime/shows on there. i think if they were more faithful and less goofy it wouldnt have hit the same. a lot of what they did was super over the top goofy but i think it was what kids wanted to see at that time period ( i know i did ) and it a lot of peoples hate is them trying to sound cool.
Half their theme songs were legit.
King Dedede
4kids did have a few good dub openings Shaman King TmnT 2003 Sonic X Kirby Yugioh Plus we never would have gotten the Shadow Realm
They helped bring my favourite card game to the western world
The memes
They have an awesome dub for pokemon.
Hasn't this been done already? They brought over a lot of shows that nobody else would've given a chance.
4kidz has some good voice actors. I'm biased since I grew up on yugioh, but I genuinely think the casting and voice acting for it is great. Dan Green and Eric Stewart are iconic as Yugi and Kaiba, and even though the censorship and localization detracts from it, the performances definitely make up for it
Dedede’s voice in the anime is iconic. Literally every line I see from him, whether in comics, video games or ads, I imagine it in that voice.

Yu Gi Oh 5DS
They alongside FUNimation (who also distributed 4kids shows that weren’t Pokémon(was distributed by VIZ and Pioneer) on physical media in the 2000s), VIZ, Bandai, Saban, DIC, and Pioneer/Geneon introduced anime to kids back when anime wasn’t a thing, was considered adult, or people didn’t know it was anime.
They made a good Sonic X dub despite it having to be heavily censored compared to the original
You're telling me Cosmo being shot with a fucking laser by Tails was the censored version?
Yes. You can look it up on YouTube all the stuff that was censored
YOHOHO HE TOOK A BITE OF GUM GUM
Their TMNT show was great.

I WISH sanji had the 4kids voice as his normal voice
I remember starting the funimation dub and not thinking twice about the VAs until they got to Sanji and got so confuse why he didn’t sound like Vin Diesel anymore.
Legit grew up with 4Kids and was sad to see it gone. Also ngl I also grew up thinking one piece was a kid show lmfao
My childhood
Didn't they do the pokemon intro? The one we all know and love
Why would 4Kids be getting in flack? That was my shit back in the day. Sonic X, TMNT, Yugi O, Winx Club.
I have nothing but nice things to say about 4Kids.
They allegedly paid the voice actors extremely well, compared to other studios at the time
Like some other guy said, the voice actors were really talented, they just had horrible scripts.
As someone with a 5 year old, I have a lot more appreciation for the censoring now. We’re trying to watch One Piece on Crunchyroll and there’s so much profanity for what is supposed to be a kid’s show in Japan.

Yu-Gi-Oh in general, they gave it the best Theme and the best thing they did ever, the censor for hell was THE SHADOW REALM
They did the best that they could do with what they were working with. Its not easy to adapt a show to completely different cultures, and sure, maybe they just straight up shouldn't do that, but remember with the time they probably weren't allowed to just leave it be. And especially forgive them with One Piece, they were strong armed into that one

One piece rap is peak
very helpful
Ya
Gave LittleKuriboh material for some of his best jokes
The voice cast performances, as campy as they were, carried most series on the block.
They're replacement OP themes always slap.
It introduced a generation to anime
The one piece rap was mint.
No.
It was fun on Saturday mornings! Admittedly, I was ignorant of their Japanese origins, but that doesn't make them any less fun.
It may have been bad, but it was definetly memorable I'll give that.
Jelly filled donuts
it gave us Mike Polloc's eggman
Bro I loved this station! My siblings and I were obsessed w/ sonic
My first time seeing any anime was on Saturday mornings watching 4kids. I would wake up extra early just to catch all my shows
I'm glad that kid's are having fun
Gotta go fast!
Jelly Donuts
Without it we probably wouldn't have Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged. But yeah, I'll never forgive them for doing my boy Sanji dirty.
They have good VS
YO YO YA YOOOOO
They cooked like crazy when it came to theme songs.
The dubs felt like ghost stories dub if they had a script and were more on crack
Their theme songs usually slap. Case in point: Shaman King, Pokémon, Sonic X, even One Piece.
It was the only way to watch magical girl shows at the time. I know the original dubs were way better, but it was a good introduction and the music was good too, especially in mew mew power
The theme songs, pure fire
They casted Ted Lewis as King Dedede
Prepare for one piece its the name of the treasure on the grand line! Set sail for one piece! ( probably messed the words up but that intro was a banger)
Introduced thousands of people to some of the most beloved anime out there
King Dedede's English VA is unironically one of the best voice casting decisions in cartoons.
Most of their intros are actually bops.
Well it did have some interesting shows 🤷💯 Sonic X TMNT 2003 Yu Gi Oh Also that One Piece Rap and can't forget those memes 🔥😂
I cant
It introduced me to Kirby as an anime before the games (I think).... Kirby is still one of my top five favorite series in gaming lol.
The one piece dub they did has some “so bad they’re funny” one liners that never fail to make me cackle whenever I hear them
Have the absolute funniest adaptation of one piece
Wouldn't have know shit about anime without them (not as early in my life, at least.)
The one piece song is what kept my attention as a kid. Which eventually lead into me finally catching up on the show.
For better or worse the dubs gave us a lot of memories. For the longest time I didn’t understand why Ash and his friends are so many jelly donuts of why they were shaped like that
Never heard of it.
It's 4 Kids
They gave king dedede a southern accent
Good voice acting. Some of the lines might've been lame, but the actors and actresses worked with what they had and did a great job.
Sonic x is absolutely amazing
It got me started on anime.
Thank you for an AMAZING childhood
They helped bring us the 2003 TMNT. Other than that, if I had a time machine, I’d have gone back and try to convince the 4Kids execs to try and sell One Piece as a show for Prime Time television rather than Saturday Mornings. That way they could release the show uncut.
Gave us a lot of memes and concepts. Imagine a timeline where "Shadow Real", the abridged series, "It should have been me" and ..."you activated my trap card". Also introduced a lot of anime to a lot of people and also not having it be at the hours of midnight to five am on cable tv and instead daytime on public tv.
Thank you 4kids for creating the shadow realm
They make nice openings.
It improved Duel Monsters
Because of them I found Yu-Gi-Oh and now it takes over my life once a year for like a month and then disappears entirely.
Well, I'm glad they were able to give us TMNT 03, and let them get away with so much. I think the only things they did with TMNT was not air the ninja tribunal arc, not air Insane in the membrane, and pull one episode from production
They needlessly censored a cross in Tokyo mew mew and that makes me laugh
They game me such great childhood memories
Got me watching anime like shaman king and one piece. Was meda bots on there too?
Yugioh abridged creator littlekuriboh was often a copyright target for 4kids and his series and YouTube channel was banned various times in its early years. So when 4kids went bankrupt littlekuriboh made reference to it in [this](https://youtu.be/lEEDMahLnqQ?si=oWvvIcZy4AlUdddu) episode of yugioh abridged. Honestly i think given whats happened between them i feel this was the best way to look at it
The English music for the Tokyo Mew Mew dub ate and left no crumbs.
