Fried chicken, fried potatoes, fried pickles, fried cheese curds, fried Oreos, fried okra, fried shrimp, fried oysters, fried catfish, onion rings, donuts, funnel cakes, jalapeno poppers, tater tots...

PumilioTat

I'm starting to feel like there's a fried thing going on - and growing up on fried Southern food I like it!

PhasePsychological90

These were originally referred to as chicken fryers. The deeper sides make it more useful for such than a standard skillet. It's a convenient way of frying small batches without having to use a bunch of oil. Edit: typo

theboehmer

This is exactly why I bought my deep skillet. I believe the letters on it are CF for chicken fryer.

CandyFlippin4Life

Hell yeah

PumilioTat

Yeah, this one has the "CF" mark on the bottom for chicken fryer. I have a a 5 1/2 qt. Le Creuset Dutch Oven that I use frying. I was just trying to find ideas for this pan that I can't do in my 12" skillet or that DO. The deep dish bake ideas suggested here seem best suited for this pan instead of my 12" inch skillet or Dutch Oven though.

PhasePsychological90

Absolutely. Handy for anything that you don't want to have to dig deep in your DO to get out.

Confident_Poet_6341

Don’t forget plantains!

FriendOfShaq

Fried plantains?

Confident_Poet_6341

Give them a try! Was frying some up this morning on my pan

CC_Panadero

Slice, fry, eat like chips. There are some dips I’ll only eat with fried plantains.

Character-Milk-3792

Absolutely.

Twuhdz

Are the last 5 things fried? Just for clarity purposes.

Slight_Distance_942

Baked Mac and cheese

PumilioTat

Thanks, that's something I can get behind - I have a couple of good recipes that would work it!

Slight_Distance_942

Yummm! 👏🏼

wdwerker

I learned my mother’s recipe for Mac and cheese ! Follow the directions on the Mullers elbows package and double the cheese ! Eyes were opened while I was learning to cook in my first apartment.

CandyFlippin4Life

Oooo

imthatguysammy

Really, really, thick apple pie

PumilioTat

Interesting - I might have to take a shot at making something like this.

EatsCrackers

Ooooo, this would be a bitchin pot pie maker! The high sides means no mess when the filling inevitably boils over. Pro tips: * make the crust from scratch, it’s not hard. Use a wine bottle if you don’t own a rolling pin (I’ve been washing and using a bottle of Kirkland vodka for yonks, and the Pastry Police have yet to arrest me) * swap out half the water the recipe calls for with vodka. * swap out 5-15 ml of what’s left with apple cider vinegar Gluten activates with water, so adding ethanol lets you work the dough more before it can get tough. Gluten doesn’t form as well in acid, so if you drop the ph just a smidge that gives you some wiggle room, too. The final crust has a je ne se qua of a flavor you can’t quite identify, other than “yum!”

PumilioTat

Thanks! I do a lot of baking so lot in addition to cooking, so this is a GREAT idea! The deep dish baking ideas are definitely better suited for this pan than my 12" skillet or Dutch Oven.

ArmadilloWooden7565

Good to know! Saving!

PG908

Frying, deep dish pizza, stews, small portions of one-pot recipes, and baking come to mind. Ever heard of plov? Might be good for something of that nature.

PumilioTat

Great suggestions! Never heard of plov before, had to look it up. Now I want to give it a try!

PG908

Highly recommend it! Garlic & cumin is one of those flavor combinations that made me go "Ah, thaaats why people died for spices. Fair enough."

BlueHorseshoe00

It’s great for a deep cornbread. I’ll also use it in the smoker for goulash.

EatsCrackers

Smoked. Goulash. This is my new favorite food, and I haven’t even tried it yet!

BlueHorseshoe00

And then you dip your fresh homemade bread into it. It’s a game changer. Don’t forget your chilled Riesling or Tokaji to go with it.

EatsCrackers

Ok, you had me at goulash, but now the bread and the beverages? When’s supper? I’ll bring dessert!

stryst

...you're doing what to that goulash now? And who's been keeping this one from me.

BlueHorseshoe00

Haha. I’ll use this pan for goulash for quick two person serving. I’ll use a cast iron Dutch oven in my smoker for when I’m needing more servings. I use the pellet smoker for this technique. Using a Kamado or Big Green Egg will make it too smoky. 60% wood pellet mix, 40% charcoal pellet.

PumilioTat

Looking for any suggestions on what others use this for, or any particular dishes that this is suited for beyond what my skillet can do.

Cochrynn

To me a deep skillet would be for frying chicken, maybe start with that! Nice find!

PumilioTat

That's a good suggestion - I mean, it IS stamped with CF (Chicken Fryer) on the bottom. 😆

EatsCrackers

I bet this pan would make a baller chicken parm. It’s always so difficult to get enough oil in the bog standard skillets, but that wouldn’t be a problem here!

Handies4Cookiez

I just used my Dutch oven to make some carne guisada on the stove top for dinner tonight! Has to simmer for like an hour nothing makes it better than my Dutch oven

geekgirl114

Lodge Apple crisp

PumilioTat

Good idea 👍

geekgirl114

Ot the monster cookie

PumilioTat

I’m sensing you might have a sweet tooth 😄

geekgirl114

Slightly. But I've also cooked 1 pan chicken parm and posted it on this subreddit.

EricSnacks

Deep fry all the things

PumilioTat

Yeah, can’t argue that! 😆

Shutterx89

Cornbread

Shutterx89

There’s at least five guys who just follow this sub and have an auto typed response that says, “Just cook in it”. These are obviously trolls and ignorant losers who just want to be heard. Cook in it and enjoy it yes. However, definitely look up a cornbread recipe on YouTube, and dive head first into it🤘

neato_my_dude

Cornbread in a cast iron is the best

PumilioTat

Agreed!

CandyFlippin4Life

Butter chicken!

Custard_Tart_Addict

Omg I would totally make stews with it and there are other dishes where high walls are needed

PumilioTat

Thanks. I have my Le Creuset 5 1/2 qt. Dutch Oven that is my go-to for things likes stews. I was trying to find suggestions for things I can't do in my 12" skillet or DO to justify my purchase (not that I need to). It seems like some of the deep dish bake ideas on here would work well for this pan.

razeronion

Double deep dish pizza

PumilioTat

Thanks! The deep dish baking ideas are definitely better suited for this pan than my 12" skillet or Dutch Oven.

Ramblin_Bard472

Not a cast iron owner yet, but one of my go-to dishes is frikassee and I always feel like my normal sized stainless isn't deep enough. I think it's a 12 though,10 might be a little too crowded for the browning part.

PumilioTat

Thanks. I have my Le Creuset 5 1/2 qt. Dutch Oven that is my go-to for things likes stews - and a fricassee. I was trying to find suggestions for things I can't do in my 12" skillet or DO to justify my purchase (not that I need to). It seems like some of the deep dish bake ideas on here would work well for this pan.

stoneycrkr

Deep dish pizza!

PumilioTat

The deep dish bake ideas seem to be the suggestions best suited for this pan instead of my 12" inch skillet or Dutch Oven.

Lost-Cantaloupe123

My 10” is my work horse, everything you can do with your 12” plus fry & stew, Cajun turkey wings w/ veggies 😎

JoWoMo

Fried chicken/fish

PumilioTat

Yeah, this one has the "CF" mark on the bottom for chicken fryer. I have a a 5 1/2 qt. Le Creuset Dutch Oven that I have used for frying. I was just trying to find ideas for this pan that I can't do in my 12" skillet or that DO. Some deep dish bakes mentioned in the comments have been good ideas, though.

GHH3158

Cobbler, Mac and cheese, breakfast casserole, and I big thick brownie!

PumilioTat

Good suggestions. I think the deep dish bakes are thinks this pan can do better than my 12" skillet or Dutch Oven.

GHH3158

I kind of prefer a deep dish skillet over a dutch oven. I like the skillet handle. And I just use it more

EvilDan69

I use mine for practically everything. Frying, cooking hamburger due to the high sides etc.

JCuss0519

I have a similar pan, a Wagner from the 60s and it is, literally, a "Chicken Fryer". A deep pan like that is made for frying, so have some fun!

PumilioTat

Yeah, this one has the "CF" mark on the bottom for chicken fryer. I have a a 5 1/2 qt. Le Creuset Dutch Oven that I have used for frying. I was just trying to find ideas for this pan that I can't do in my 12" skillet or that DO. Some deep dish bakes have been good ideas, though.

Dyldobaggins219

Cooking

Preddy_Fusey

You can melt ALL the lead in that bad boy! It would look like a T-1000 is taking a bath in it 🤣

Commercial-Humor-315

Ttttttt TJ Max

Toucan_Lips

Nice depth. I immediately thought bread. But use it for anything. It's always nice to have back ups.

PumilioTat

Thanks. I do a lot of bread baking in my Dutch Oven now. It does seem that a lot of the deep dish bakes suggested on here are better suited for this pan than my 12" skillet or DO though.

Arch_stanton1

Now I have to check TJMaxx

PumilioTat

For sure. I was there to buy some things for my daughter and wandered into the kitchen area and found it. Like I said, I saw the list price was $15 less than normal, so I couldn't pass it up.

Gniphe

Goblins, orcs, cave trolls…

PumilioTat

Shoot, now it sounds like that might require a cauldron to put over the fire. 😆

daleearnhardtt

Frying and makings sausage gravy

PumilioTat

Yeah, this one has the "CF" mark on the bottom for chicken fryer. I have a a 5 1/2 qt. Le Creuset Dutch Oven that I use for frying. I was just trying to find ideas for this pan that I can't do in my 12" skillet or that DO. daleearnhardtt

I’ve done pineapple upside down cake and deep dish pizza in mine too

SadAttorney8035

My summer activity so far has been to have a fire in my fire pit, and once it’s down to coals, I throw my pan on there and cook something. 10/10 I love it feels like I’m camping in my backyard

PumilioTat

That sounds like a fun activity and would have been great around my firepit at my house. Unfortunately sold it and live in an apartment now, so I miss things like that. I left my camping days behind me too, so I don't have that option either. ☹️

SadAttorney8035

Ah dang, guess it’s time to make some bacon 😂

lfxlPassionz

It's deep so it would be great for baking. Cornbread, brownies, etc.

Hesychios

Looks like a chicken fryer minus the lid.

Hesychios

If I had a lid that fit I would pop some corn.

PumilioTat

Lodge sells a glass lid that fits this, so I like that suggestion!

Hesychios

Check your other skillets, there might be one in the house already which fits. Also, Goodwill sells lids separate from pots in my area (perhaps other thrift stores do likewise). They usually have a wide assortment. Take the ID and the OD measurements of the top of the pot and look around. Keep the pot in the back of your car and if you find something promising tell the staff you want to bring your pot in to make sure it fits. Sometimes you will find a heavy glass crock-pot type of lid which would work very well for a fryer.

PumilioTat

Thanks - Really great tips!

pelonperro

Add a good lid, and use it for rice.

AKBigHorn

Chicken fryer, baby!

PumilioTat

Yeah, this one has the "CF" mark on the bottom for chicken fryer. I have a a 5 1/2 qt. Le Creuset Dutch Oven that I have used for frying. I was just trying to find ideas for this pan that I can't do in my 12" skillet or that DO. Some deep dish bakes suggested on here have been good ideas, though.

AKBigHorn

I use my 12” for frying, but I wanted a deeper one and been eyeing one of these. It’s not a need, but a want. Would be great for baking though.

Regular-Ruin2478

Everything and anything, except for acidic foods like tomatoes…

[deleted]

Yep it would be in my collection as well needed or not
