Im not a huge fan I’ve heard some bad things about the company.

blue buffalo has had a lot of issues in the past. i feed my cats the crunchy treats because they like them way better than temptations but i wouldn’t use the foods. my cat gets a small amount of wellness core original kibble to snack on overnight and then wet food during the day. usually fancy feast pates but she likes weruva and petco’s wholehearted flakes as well.

SuccessfulOrder2534

I’ve always liked fancy feast so I might go with them if I need to switch them off blue buffalo

usernamenumber3

My cats require prescription food (kidney) and this is the only brand that had ingredients I was comfortable with feeding my babies. Numbers improved after switching and they both love it.

rangerdanger_9

I don’t care for blue buffalo personally. I think purina, royal canin and hilld are much safer options.

PlentifulPaper

This is Reddit and people here like to believe that if you aren’t feeding wet food or a raw diet that you’re a bad cat parent. And that dry cat food is bad. I know in male cats the risk of getting crystals is higher as they get older. My two both get the Blue Buffalo sensitive skin fish and potato dry food. My one cat has a food allergy to chicken and I tried all different kinds of cat food and this is one we both agreed on works. They both loved the rabbit based foods, but their litter box is in my bedroom (and those were really smelly poops so I vetoed that one).

SuccessfulOrder2534

I’m just asking because the breeder I’m getting the cat from it putting them on this brand and I keep hearing mixed things about it so it confuses me. I just want what’s best for my cat and what’s affordable at the same time

PlentifulPaper

And mine are fine on it. But that’s because they have existing allergies to chicken. They were originally on Hill’s. And the first paragraph was context. Most people here swear by a wet cat food diet. Some of us feed dry food and make sure there’s ample water around the house. But I know not to tell people that I feed dry food the majority of the time here because I don’t want the angry comments. Edit adding: I’ve got one very picky eater that will only eat a specific brand of chicken wet kitten food, and the other is a garbage can - no preference. I can’t get away with feeding chicken cuz the picky one will break out but will refuse to eat anything else.

SuccessfulOrder2534

Ah yes I’ve seen those angry comments before

Fitcat1980

As I said in another post - gave many of my rescue cats liver cancer. They ballooned with water, liver failure and died. Autopsy was liver cancer due to high vitamins and when they came to my rescue only fed blue kibble. I have emails and letters from them admitting to it.

pissypeony

Royal canin (they have very sensitive stomachs and this brand has special food made for this breed). Purina pro plan is also ok. I feed hills science diet currently

Not sure about their kibble or treats, but I’ve heard really bad things about their wet food. It contains something called carrageenan in it which is a thickening agent, but it’s shown to cause urinary issues, bloody stool, etc. I’d suggest reading around this page as there’s a lot of discussions around it :)

SuccessfulOrder2534

Thank you! I wasn’t sure about their wet food but I plan on asking the breeder what wet food she’s been feeding them so I can base it off that. Hopefully it isn’t also blue buffalo haha

__miichelle

Carrageenan is just algae, it comes from kelp. It’s in ice cream and toothpaste—you probably ingest it all the time.

9bitez

i’m just letting people know what i’ve been told. Just because it’s okay for humans doesn’t make it okay for cats. Look into it, there’s multiple articles talking about how it’s been unsafe for cats (ofc every animal is different), as well as Blue Buffalo wet food leading to issues in others cats.

__miichelle

I did look into it and none of those articles cite any credible sources, and actual scientific studies that have been done do not support the claims that carrageenan is harmful to cats.

9bitez

okay cool, once again, i’m just letting her know what i’ve heard about that brand of cat food. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, maybe that isn’t the agent in their wet food that has been causing issues though. thanks for the info, I’ll definitely have to look into it more.

__miichelle

No problem, and definitely not trying to jump down your throat about it. It’s just important (and one of the community rules in this subreddit) to have credible and reliable sources (i.e., a scientific publication) to back up a claim.

SaffronxSumac

We had a cat live 21+ years on it so it’s pretty good. No artificials. I use it still and my cats r healthy. So I’d recommend it.

SuccessfulOrder2534

If the breeder tells me blue buffalo has been working and they have no problems whatsoever I might just stick to it but if not I’ll go look into other brands. I just want what’s best for my cat but also what’s affordable at the same time yk?

SaffronxSumac

Yes.I understand. Its fine.
