He thought for a while, and eventually moved his knight because it's attacked, which lost him his queen, so probably after not finding a mate and looking for another move made him forget what he was doing

its called a dovetail checkmate, one of the unusual patterns with queen mates. you can practice spotting them on lichess > training > mating patterns
