I’ll keep saying it on every time this question is asked on this sub: Candelite! All the way. And if you go on Tuesday and sit at the bar, it’s BOGO medium or large. Also, if you like sausage, theirs is fantastic. I generally get the sausage and peppers pizza. So yum.
Also, they recently earned the accolade of #9 in the top pizza slices in the US. J. B Alberto's in Rogers Park is amazing and underrated.
They don't have other sauces tho. Generally, the best tavern style places only do tomato sauces.
I am blessed to live near the RV location and it’s my go to for pizza. Recently got it for a party and friends who’d never had it before really liked it. The Union Stockyard is my personal favorite.
Fox’s in Beverly does not get nearly enough love from this sub. High quality ingredients and cooked just right. It’s not crispy and sometimes I wonder if that’s why it’s get overlooked
You're right. I dab it with napkins and I don't have to do that with beggars, rosangelas or milanos. Sometimes Barraco’s and Vito and Nicks need a pat down.
In no particular order I've tried and enjoyed these:
1) Middle Brow on Armitage - Sourdough bread
2) Jimmy's in Logan Square - New York style
3) Piece Pizza in Wicker - New Haven style
Both great spots! I think getting it well done at Bartolis is critical, too. First time I had it “normal” and thought it was good, got it again well done and haven’t looked back.
I like Calo's for old-school square cut thin crust (people call it tavern style these days, but I hate that term as I have never been to tavern that serves pizza like that). NOT a fan of their "specialty" pizzas. My family has been ordering from Calo's since the 1980s when it was a tiny hole in the wall.
Okay, so I’m only suggesting this because you mentioned pesto on pizza.
Please don’t hate on this take…. It isn’t anywhere near my favorite, but PizzaHut just released a “Chicago tavern style” pizza recently. It’s actually decent and they have a $12 deal on a specialty pizza called the “ultimate” and you can add a pesto drizzle and cupping pepperoni for no additional cost. I’ve had it twice now and would recommend it if you need to scratch that itch and there is one within walking distance to you.

Vito and Nicks
Shocked I had to scroll this far to find Vito and Nicks. Best pizza in Chicago.
I really like Michael’s in Buena Park for my square cut needs
Love Michael’s! Their sauce is delicious
Michaels
I must not be ordering the right thing here. What do you get?
Tavern Pepperoni and Giard well done. I’m also bias because we used to live close.
You gotta get the extra thin and crispy. Amazing
The wings :)
Pats on the north side, Roseangelas on the south side
Pat's has the best thin crust I've tried
This is the way
That's my cousin's place. Love the cracker thin crust.
Villa Nova. that said im not into "artisanal" toppings for this style. give me red sauce and fennel sausage, every time.
I don't think I'd heard of giardeniera on pizza before about 2008 so it's still a fancy new thing in my mind, but it's also a perfect fit
Don’t know you guys, but you’re my people. Villa Nova is awesome and spot on with the standard toppings.
Slice: Pop-N-Pizza Thin crust : Palermo's 63rd Tavern Style: Vito & Nick's, Ignotz, Obbie's & Villa Nova
Palermo's is hands down my favorite pizza.
Tortorice's
All day. Every day. I used to be very fat
I still am. But I used to be too
I’ll keep saying it on every time this question is asked on this sub: Candelite! All the way. And if you go on Tuesday and sit at the bar, it’s BOGO medium or large. Also, if you like sausage, theirs is fantastic. I generally get the sausage and peppers pizza. So yum.
NY style slices at Jimmys on Montrose & western
Also, they recently earned the accolade of #9 in the top pizza slices in the US. I find they are at their best when you order a whole pizza. Their slices can be dry sometimes.
i’ve been 5 times that happened the second time i went otherwise 🔥
J. B Alberto's in Rogers Park is amazing and underrated. They don't have other sauces tho. Generally, the best tavern style places only do tomato sauces.
And they do a giant pizza. Highly recommend
Their pizza is just amazing TBH. So cheesy
They have my favorite hot wings, too!
Obbies in Garfiled Ridge. Well done sausage pie.
Had it last night for the first time. Quite good. Reminds me of the original Foxes.
Bartoli's
I am blessed to live near the RV location and it’s my go to for pizza. Recently got it for a party and friends who’d never had it before really liked it. The Union Stockyard is my personal favorite.
Bungalow, only on Tavern Tuesdays
Flo and Santos and D'Agostinos are my two spots
YES 100% Also my top 2
I love the thin crust at Candlelite.
Pete’s Pizza.
Fox’s in Beverly does not get nearly enough love from this sub. High quality ingredients and cooked just right. It’s not crispy and sometimes I wonder if that’s why it’s get overlooked
When it’s good, it’s so so good. Sometimes it’s too greasy though
You're right. I dab it with napkins and I don't have to do that with beggars, rosangelas or milanos. Sometimes Barraco’s and Vito and Nicks need a pat down.
Classic napkin move does solve the grease problem!
R.I.P. John’s Pizza.
Also RIP John's wings
This dude knows
Frank’s on Belmont
Panino’s on Waveland and Halsted/Broadway. Really underrated, especially for its crust.
pats
Pats in Lincoln park is my new go-to since John’s left is (rip)
In no particular order I've tried and enjoyed these: 1) Middle Brow on Armitage - Sourdough bread 2) Jimmy's in Logan Square - New York style 3) Piece Pizza in Wicker - New Haven style
Bartoli’s recently. Really superb thin crust. I prefer it to tortorice’s though they’re both good.
Both great spots! I think getting it well done at Bartolis is critical, too. First time I had it “normal” and thought it was good, got it again well done and haven’t looked back.
Interesting, I absolutely love Bartoli's (have had it probably 20+ times) but haven't tried it well done. I'll have to try...
LaVilia on Pulaski.
Pete's

NOT a fan of their "specialty" pizzas. My family has been ordering from Calo's since the 1980s when it was a tiny hole in the wall.
For tavern style, I’m going to suggest a few on the southwest side, Garfield Ridge. Danny’s Pizza and Villa Rosa.

After spending $35 (!) on tavern style at a new neighborhood spot, the $12 deal sounds pretty good for pizza on a budget
Upvoted for being brave, although Pizza Hut always had me sweating grease
Yall should be ashamed of yourselves
La Villa Pizza in Old Irving Park
Pat’s on Lincoln or LaVilla
Pats
Frank’s on Belmont. So good. Carry out though, it’s kind of awkward in there.
Nancy's pizza, I've only ever had the West loop's location pizza though.
So good, so consistent!
I have one right by my house and these are so good
Fat Chris’ tavern style is fuh’d up 10/10
Easy Street
Joe’s on Weed Street
Rosangela’s. Although my grandpa has his birthday at Fox’s recently and everyone in attendance kept remarking about how good the pizza was
Palermo’s, Rosangela’s, Vito and nicks, Tata’s, barracos,
Pizanos
Pat's pizza in the south loop doesn't disappoint. I don't think it has any relation to the one in the north side which people also put in this list
[Panino’s](https://www.paninospizza.com/) in Lakeview and [Flo & Santos](https://floandsantos.com/) in the South Loop have excellent thin-crust
Because I hadn't seen either mentioned, I'll at least give some love to Pizza Matta and My Pi.
North burbs
Maries 😭😭😭
Love maries liqours pizza!!
J.B Albertos in Rodgers Park
Homeslice elote taverna is heavenly.
Michael’s in uptown is my favorite but kind of surprised nobody mentioned Dags!
For a quick slice during the work week downtown, Dough Boys on State & Hubbard
Pie Eyed Pizzeria is good
Flo and Santos
Waterworks in Lyons. Villa Nova in Stickney.

Read Rule #2. EDIT: The downvote is hilarious after I pointed out that it's **Chicagoland** in Rule #2... 🤣
Danny's on Ogden in Brookfield.
Oh God no. I've tasted better cardboard.

Read rule #2. It says "Chicagoland", that includes suburbs. Talk to the mods about it.

Found Danny’s burner account, that place is not a player.
Salerno's on Grand.
Geo’s NW Side
Barnaby's Northbrook (only), nor the other locations. Great crust.

Loretta’s in Skokie. Half Sausage half pep slightly well done. 🫡
For some reason I’m not finding this place on Google Maps or Yelp. Can you please share a link? It sounds great!
I’m an idiot and got mixed with the popular Loretta sandwich from a suburban staple Sarkis. The place I meant to say was La Rosa 😂
Oh got it! I do that sometimes too 😂 La Rosa was already on my list of places to try. Thanks for giving me the nudge I needed to actually try it!

You just seem to enjoy being a jerk, don't you? Obviously you've never read the rules of the group based on your comments.
I looked for a Loretta’s in Skokie and didn’t see one. Chicagoland is fair game and I’d love to check it out!

No “thin slices” here. We do square cut thin crust. That said, Sidestreet Saloon.
Parlor Pizza Bar in the West Loop
After reading all the news from 2020, how can anyone still support this business
I was not aware of the news from 2020. What did I miss? What did this place do?
Pretty sure they’re referring to this from 2021 https://blockclubchicago.org/2021/11/15/parlor-pizza-sat-customers-of-color-in-rejection-section-overworked-staff-without-pay-former-employees-allege/
Ah. I had no idea.
From 2021* my mistake https://chicago.eater.com/2021/11/15/22783117/parlor-pizza-bar-racism-allegations-staff
Wow.. that’s you top pizza choice for Chicago.. kind of sad
Lol—not my top. I’ve only been there once. Thought they had some good, different options.
