They're probably on shit pay and try to milk every lead they have for bonus. Pretty standard for any other cold-calling type job.

jlemien

You hit the nail on the head. I have the same kind of eyeroll when I talk to a housing agent (I tell them exactly what I am looking for, and they respond "Would you like to see this apartment outside of the area you clearly defined?"), or what I imagine it would be like to buy a car ("Can I upsell you on these overpriced add-ons which you don't need"). On the one hand, I know that I am just an object for them to make money, much like when I hike up a mountain and a little old lady follows me for 30 minutes trying to sell me a drink, and while it isn't enjoyable to be treated as an means to an end, I know that the pressures in their lives and the incentives of the situation push them to do this. On the other hand, I wish that people would just believe me when I tell them what my preferences are, such as when I tell the little old lady that I have plenty of water for myself in my backpack and that I am not going to buy any water from her, and then she continues to try and sell me water for the next half hour. But I do think it is a bit funny that I haven't responded in three years or so, she she is still sending generic *touch base* messages.

Whammy_Watermelon

I think they just have a broadcast list of leads, and just send everybody the same messages until someone responds

Anngsturs

By the way is this Grace? I have a recruiter who does the same thing with the same WeChat pfp lol

bailsafe

This is so far from unique to China. This is just any commission-based job anywhere in the world.

Irishcheese_

The messages are like 6 months apart and during the hiring season. It’s not really a big deal. And most teachers have insane turnover and do 1 year max. No offence but it’s normal no matter what industry, you get emails from companies you interviewed with before or agents on LinkedIn. If you don’t want their message just delete them. Or just send a message back saying not looking.

TheCriticalAmerican

Yeah, I don't know what you were expecting. This is pretty normal behavior from any kind of sales agent - and recruiters are essentially sales agent. They're selling you a job. I keep these people on WeChat because you never know when when shit might hit the fan. I have no expectation that I'll be that desperate for a job - but, if I ever am desperate for a job, at least I have that option.

jlemien

>I keep these people on WeChat because you never know when when shit might hit the fan. I have no expectation that I'll be that desperate for a job - but, if I ever am desperate for a job, at least I have that option. That is exactly my thought, too. I hope I don't ever end up being that desperate, but if I do then it is nice to have some people I can reach out to rather than starting from scratch.

Dundertrumpen

I'm more exasperated by the fact that you're somehow offended by a recruiter doing their job.

My_Big_Arse

100% what an oddball. AND, if it's a problem this person doesn't know how to operate DELETE??? ugh. How is this person a teacher?

jlemien

Haha. Hi My\_Big\_Arse. I keep recruiters like this in my contact list just in case I ever need them. It is totally compatible to find some behaviors annoying, and to still be able to benefit from being able to contact those people. But I think I understand what you are getting at: if I couldn't figure out how to delete a contact from a messaging app, I'd question my intelligence.

Pushnikowa

In other words, you don't have a problem treating the recruiters you roll your eyes at as a means to an end... Seems like a fine arrangement then. You need them sometimes and they need you sometimes. Ergo, you are each other's WeChat contacts.

Starrylands

Yeah, OP is yet another self-contradicting 'blame it on China' person.

jlemien

I'm not offended by it. My reaction is more of an eyeroll chuckle with a sigh. Pretty much the same result that I would have if I had a rando messaging me "do you want to be my friend."

FrancisHC

It's not abnormal for recruiters around the world in many different industries. I just ignore them - it actually helps the recruiters because they don't have to spend the time reading my no-thank-you messages. If it bothers you why don't you just block them?

TwoCentsOnTour

Yeah that's someone working on commission I guess. Probably sending that same messages to lots of contacts. Just delete them - if you ever are in the position to where you need a recruiter to help with available jobs, you won't have any trouble finding one.

galenernest

I still have a bunch of contacts on Wechat like that. They are always very polite and never send me too many messages. I absolutely don't mind being contacted once in a while asking if I want to work. I have two seconds in my life to shoot an occasional "thanks for asking, but I'm not looking for work right now," reply. I mean, why are you keeping this contact if it bothers you so much?

Mechanic-Latter

It’s normal. Just delete them.

pxp121kr

Stop thinking that they are deeply thinking about you. They don't care if you don't reply. They CTRL + C and CTRL + V the mssages to like fucking 50 ppl on their contact list, and the ones are interested, they engage with them.

CatpainLarding

I mean it's literally their job and how they earn money.

Oz_CB

Would you share their contact with me? Looking to relocate in China, trying to find leads and a job like this

Todd_H_1982

They probably have a couple of thousand people on their WeChat and are sending mass messages out to all of their people in the hope that one bites back with a "got any jobs going"? Just another form of mass marketing. They're not using your name in any of their messages so I'd assume this is what they're doing.

eskdale8

Just think of it as rather like junk mail. They send out masses and see what sticks. Mute the conversation and just ignore it, you could always just delete them if you have no further use or interest.

xind0898

you know when you watch the same ad for the thousands time and it's the 1001th time that you started to think "hey this might actually be useful"?

theOMegaxx

You know Wechat has a "minimize chat" function, right? Do this and you'll never have to see the messages until you decide to open the chat again. Simple solution.

peacewalker003

They are agent and earning commission I guess

olilam

Pretty standard everywhere. Recruiters just doing their job.

Colascape

Why are you mad? It’s their job. Generally I’ve found them to be really good as long as you are clear with what you want from them. Far better than some the foreign recruiter/scammers.

Anngsturs

They're just tryna get by, man. Ain't we all?

Mechaorg

Completely normal for any Chinese recruiter. Just mute them and don’t reply , if you need them later you can pick right up.

ClayNorth7

I have her too, she messages me a few times a year. I deleted her before, and she reached out again feeling offended that I did so haha. I have never had a job or interview from her

Rocky_Bukkake

lmao i have this person added. she keeps contacting me as well

Alarming-Ad-881

I have recruiters contacting me from the UK about my previous profession from almost a decade ago. Standard.

ShanghaiNoon404

Can you give me her WeChat?

Competitive-Boss6982

Paid winer? I'm in!

registered-to-browse

Wechat has a delete contact button it's not really that hard to use.

[deleted]

You are complaining about people trying to headhunt YOU for a job?! In this economy?!?! Please.

PomegranateOverThere

Wish I had recruiters in my inbox like thus right now
