I'd listen to the Chopin Ballades and Nocturnes.

Agree with /u/BanryuWolf that the Chopin ballades would be a good next step. I would also suggest that if you like the Mendelssohn variations, stick with him and listen to his “Songs Without Words”, which are lyrical piano pieces, some of which exist in the same kind of sound world as the variations. After that, you could try Mendelssohn’s other piano works, and also take a punt at “Prelude, Chorale, and Fugue” by Franck.

Mendelssohn's Variations Serieuses is an absolute masterpiece that should be heard way more often. Grieg's Ballade is another set of variations with a chromatic theme that is subject to intense and smouldering modifications: [Grieg - Ballade in g minor (Op. 24)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tryq9a9y8Q4&ab_channel=Null)

I love Chopin’s other scherzi, although they do all have somewhat different tones. They are all lovely, in my opinion. I also love Brahms’ scherzo op. 4. Brahms’ late piano works are beautiful, too, particularly the intermezzo [opus 188, no. 2](https://youtu.be/7Wo4IPNMzWQ)

A lot of Rachmaninoff's piano music has similar vibe, e.g. etudes tableaux, some preludes. Then there are Chopin's ballades and impromptus. I'd also go for Schumann's sonatas (1 and 2) and most definitely for Schubert piano pieces like Wanderer and his impromptus.
