Dont recognise the story. It doesn't sound like Haydn (he was too nice) but it sounds a lot like something Mozart would do. I know that he observed how a certain soprano would lift her head on high notes and lower it on low notes so he wrote an aria which alternated high and low just so he could see her head bobbing up and down.
