I think leadership should keep pushing for wind and solar. Incentives for EVs, and better windows and insulation in buildings. Keep funding research for solutions. Things like energy storage, carbon capture, methane regulations, etc

Business-Volume9221

Pay for adaption where needed, pour money into research into cheaper Greener fuel systems to undercut fossil fuels then export it.

Party-Appointment-99

Work together with the rest of the world. No Country can solve this by it self. No Country for Old men!

h3fabio

Carbon tax.

Diligent_Asparagus22

Yeah I recently read this sci-fi book, Ministry for the Future, and a big plot point was the notion of a "carbon coin", which is basically a quantitative easing strategy where money is injected into the economy as a reward for carbon cutting initiatives in private industry, and the money can only be used for future green energy projects. It's a pretty interesting concept that was explored in great detail in the book.

FLSweetie

Cut fossil fuel use in half immediately.

Mirageswirl

And then cut it in half a few more times every few years.

P0RTILLA

I think a high franchise fee for ever unit pumped would be better.

snowbound365

Pretty much noone credible says we are gonna be dead in 30 years.

kcbh711

While we may not be dead, it will be rough.  Global average temperatures are [projected to rise by 0.5°F to 8.6°F](https://climatechange.chicago.gov/climate-change-science/future-climate-change), with the U.S. seeing increases of 3°F to 12°F depending on emissions scenarios. The U.S. coastline is[ projected to rise](https://coast.noaa.gov/states/fast-facts/climate-change.html) 10 to 12 inches by 2050, potentially putting $106 billion worth of coastal property below sea level. We will continue to see increased frequency, intensity, and duration of [extreme weather events](https://coast.noaa.gov/states/fast-facts/climate-change.html), including heatwaves and hurricanes, are expected. Oceans will [become warmer and more acidic](https://climatechange.chicago.gov/climate-change-science/future-climate-change), affecting marine ecosystems and fisheries. Crop yields are projected to decline in many regions, with global food yields potentially decreasing by up to [30% by 2050](https://www.heifer.org/blog/how-climate-change-affects-agriculture.html) if farmers cannot adapt to climate change effects.

snowbound365

I can agree with that. It'll be rough on the poor. The wealthy will be fine.

kcbh711

Bingo

Reddit is , well reddit. You will be fine. The planet will survive. Some areas and their culture will be heated out, starved out and flooded out but most will get by.

snowbound365

If im wrong, lets hear it....

OwnExpression5269

Unless something changes society will collapse in the next decade. The immediate problem is not glacial melt, it’s extreme weather and it’s already impacting the ability to grow crops so food prices are going to continue to climb. The US spends $2 Trillion more than it earns per year, 75% of money goes right to social security, medicare etc. Another trillion for defense. Thats 100% of US revenue. Disasters continue to cost billions and billions of dollars. Insurance costs are also rising so inflation will only get worse from here on out. Baby boomers are getting old and there is not enough healthcare available to support them as they lose mobility. Eventually the pain will be too much for the lower society economic and violence will ensue. This will start in the poorest countries and spread. Countries, like Russia, will invade other lands for resources…war will only increase from here. Oh and don’t forget about the migrants who will only increase to flee their countries for a better one. Oh and water is also becoming a problem in places where more people keep moving to, all this supercomputer and chip plants use copious amounts of water…Arizona is a prime example and they just voted down the $333 million its was going to cost to improve their water infrastructure. Oh and infrastructure is crumbling and no money to fix it. There are MANY people who see this happening and are saying the same thing…CIA predicted it and targeted 2050 but based on current events it will be less than 25 years for sure.

Live_Canary7387

Fancy providing a citation for the bit where the CIA predicted collapse?

OwnExpression5269

My bad, it wasn’t the CIA who did the initial research but they agreed with the research. The report, "The Limits to Growth," published in 1972 by a team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Commissioned by the Club of Rome, this study used a computer model to simulate global sustainability scenarios, predicting that continued economic and population growth would lead to a significant societal collapse by around 2040 to 2050. The report modeled various factors, including population growth, industrial output, food production, and pollution. It concluded that if current growth trends continued without significant changes, resources would become increasingly scarce, leading to a decline in living standards and eventual collapse of industrial and economic systems [oai_citation:1,Analyst who confirmed 2040 global collapse prediction says there’s still hope | The Independent](https://www.independent.co.uk/climate-change/news/social-collapse-harvard-paper-prediction-b2104214.html) [oai_citation:2,Report predicts ‘societal collapse’ from 2040 onwards – but what does that actually mean? | indy100](https://www.indy100.com/science-tech/report-predicts-societal-collapse-2040-b1885263). Recent analyses, such as those conducted by Gaya Herrington, have revisited these predictions. Herrington's 2021 study affirmed that many of the scenarios outlined in "The Limits to Growth" align closely with current empirical data, suggesting that the world is indeed on track for potential societal decline if significant changes are not implemented [oai_citation:3,1970s paper predicting we’ll hit societal collapse is right on schedule | The Independent](https://www.independent.co.uk/climate-change/mit-1972-prediction-societal-collapse-b1917004.html) [oai_citation:4,In 1973, an MIT computer predicted when civilization will end - Big Think](https://bigthink.com/surprising-science/in-1973-an-mit-computer-predicted-the-end-of-civilization-so-far-its-on-target/). These studies emphasize the importance of adopting sustainable practices, reducing consumption and waste, and investing in infrastructure to mitigate these predicted outcomes and work towards a more stable future.

Live_Canary7387

Exciting stuff

snowbound365

US economy in is not the same as an extinction event.

OwnExpression5269

I didn’t say that. US is an example of one country and this will affect all countries.

snowbound365

Still far from an extinction.

OwnExpression5269

I never said extinction I said society would collapse . I don’t think humans will go extinct but the population could be reduced to less than 1 billion and the lives they will live will not be fun. I forgot to mention microplastics cuz that will be the next big problem and mp will be around for centuries as plastics continue to break down. That will hinder reproduction so who knows.

Top_Hair_8984

☝️This. And that's not all that's crashing. Microbes, soil nutrients, desertification, water shortages.  I'd say much less than 25 years, I'd say 5.

OwnExpression5269

Right…I say within 10

OwnExpression5269

The president cannot solve climate change. The entire global economy is based on fossil fuels and the world governments would need to cooperate in order to solve this but they are further divided these days and many countries are focusing on their own interests and people. Eventually the impacts will force change but it will be too late to stop it however we can lessen the worst outcomes.

WikiBox

The president can't do much. If she tries another will be elected next term that reverse everything. Whatever has to be done needs to be done with the opinion of the voters in mind. So information is critical.  What needs to be done: Raise tax on fossil carbon emissions by around 35% and after that by a further 2-5% every year. Tax ALL parking lots by area used. Tax roads by area used, including easement. Use the money to invest in and subvention public transport, city redesign, updates of the electrical grid and bike infrastructure. Use any surplus for public healthcare and public schools. Introduce CO2 import taxation for imports from countries with low CO2 emissions taxation. Proportional to how much CO2 emissions are reduced yearly. Double the cost of CO2 emissions compared to the cost for emissions in domestic production.  This way countries that don't tax CO2 emissions don't benefit from other having high CO2 taxes.

Veganees

>And honestly is there any point in doing something if we're all gonna die in 30 years like doomers claim If all humans are gonna die in 30 years what we do today will matter a lot for the living we leave behind, if and when that happens.

Mutex70

Declare war on Russia. Let's get this over with already.

BuddyJim30

The Biden administration has moved some things forward that will help to at least slow the damage. The problem with our political system is when Republicans get back into power, they will un-do whatever progress has been made. There is no quick fix, it would take decades to "solve" the problem, and it will never happen in our political climate.

Party-Appointment-99

Invest in Carbon capture at all steel and cement factories. Immediately.

Ski-Mtb

It is tough because given the state of political polarization it's not sustainable to make progress as quickly as we need to be. We're also starting decades behind where we should have. I would speak honestly to the American people about how f*cked things are likely to get in the coming decades. I would lay out a plan for everyone to see and explain how the government is going to make it so people will be able to afford new cars, stoves and heat pumps. I would pass new regulations to force car manufacturers to build affordable electric vehicles. I would create incentives for States to transition off of fossil fuels and go after fossil fuel companies that are bribing politicians (looking at you Ohio). Solving climate change will take decades if not centuries and the CO2 we're emitting now will still be warming the planet in 100+ years. It's going to get much worse before it gets better.

WeAllindigenous

I’d drive my wood burning car around if there was no gas, but I’m not sure if that’s much better. Pain in the ass, but renewable

Desperate-Dust5334

A Carbon tax. Simple

thirsty_chicken

as president i knoe teh earth iz hawt peeps ov usa knoe they gotta halp furst act ov fixin, git off da land an sea we double teh nashunal parkz no moar hooj boats on teh ocean park em or we blow them up electric car only kind ov car recycle iz mandatory 4 all things we welcom all dat will halp
